Nickel orthosilicate (Ni2SiO4) has been found to decompose into its component binary oxides in oxygen potential gradients at 1373 K. Nickel oxide was formed at the high oxygen potential boundary, while silica was detected at the low oxygen potential side. Significant porosity and fissures were observed near the Ni2SiO4/SiO2 interface and the SiO2 layer. The critical oxygen partial pressure ratio required for decomposition varied from 1.63 to 2.15 as the oxygen pressures were altered from 1.01 ⊠ 105 to 2.7X 10−4 Pa, well above the dissociation pressure of Ni2SiO4. Platinum markers placed at the boundaries of the Ni2SiO4 sample indicated growth of NiO at the higher oxygen potential boundary, without any apparent transport of material to the low oxygen potential side. However, significant movement of the bulk Ni2SiO4 crystal with respect to the marker was not observed. The decomposition of the silicate occurs due to the unequal rates of transport of Ni and Si. The critical oxygen partial pressure ratio required for decomposition is related both to the thermodynamic stability of Ni2SiO4 with respect to component oxides and the ratio of diffusivities of nickel and silicon. Kinetic decomposition of multicomponent oxides, first discovered by Schmalzried, Laqua, and co-workers [H. Schmalzried, W. Laqua, and P. L. Lin, Z. Natur Forsch. Teil A 34, 192 (1979); H. Schmalzried and W. Laqua, Oxid. Met. 15, 339 (1981); W. Laqua and H. Schmalzried, Chemical Metallurgy—A Tribute to Carl Wagner (Metallurgical Society of the AIME, New York, 1981), p. 29] has important consequences for their use at high temperatures and in geochemistry.

YMnO3 thin films were grown on an n-type Si substrate by nebulized spray pyrolysis in the metal-ferroelectric-semiconductor (MFS) configuration. The capacitance-voltage characteristics of the film in the MFS structure exhibit hysteretic behaviour consistent with the polarization charge switching direction, with the memory window decreasing with increase in temperature. The density of the interface states decreases with increasing annealing temperature. Mapping of the silicon energy band gap with the interface states has been carried out. The leakage current, measured in the accumulation region, is lower in well-crystallized thin films and obeys a space-charge limited conduction mechanism. The calculated activation energy from the dc leakage current characteristics of the Arrhenius plot reveals that the activation energy corresponds to oxygen vacancy motion.

The removal of native oxide from Si (1 1 1) surfaces was investigated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and secondary ion mass spectra (SIMS) depth profiles. Two different oxide removal methods, performed under ultrahigh-vacuum (UHV) conditions, were carried out and compared. The first cleaning method is thermal desorption of oxide at 900 degrees C. The second method is the deposition of metallic gallium followed by redesorption. A significant decrease in oxygen was achieved by thermal desorption at 900 degrees C under UHV conditions. By applying a subsequent Ga deposition/redesorption, a further reduction in oxygen could be achieved. We examine the merits of an alternative oxide desorption method via conversion of the stable SiO(2) surface oxide into a volatile Ca(2)O oxide by a supply of Ga metals. Furthermore, ultra thin films of pure silicon nitride buffer layer were grown on a Si (1 1 1) surface by exposing the surface to radio-frequency (RF) nitrogen plasma followed by GaN growth. The SIMS depth profile shows that the oxygen impurity can be reduced at GaN/beta-Si(3)N(4)/Si interfaces by applying a subsequent Ga deposition/redesorption. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. Structural transformation and ionic transport properties are investigated on wet-chemically synthesized La1-xMnO3 (X=0.0-0.18) compositions. Powders annealed in oxygen/air at 1000-1080 K exhibit cubic symmetry and transform to rhombohedral on annealing at 1173-1573 K in air/oxygen. Annealing above 1773 K in air or in argon/helium at 1473 K stabilized distorted rhombohedral or orthorhombic symmetry. Structural transformations are confirmed from XRD and TEM studies. The total conductivity of sintered disks, measured by four-probe technique, ranges from 5 S cm(-1) at 298 K to 105 S cm(-1) at 1273 K. The ionic conductivity measured by blocking electrode technique ranges from 1.0X10(-6) S cm(-1) at 700 K to 2.0X10(-3) S cm(-1) at 1273 K. The ionic transference number of these compositions ranges from 3.0X10(-5) to 5.0X10(-5) at 1273 K. The activation energy deduced from experimental data for ionic conduction and ionic migration is 1.03-1.10 and 0.80-1.00 eV, respectively. The activation energy of formation, association and migration of vacancies ranges from 1.07 to 1.44 eV. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Carbon-supported Pt-Au (Pt-Au/C) catalyst is prepared separately by impregnation, colloidal and micro-emulsion methods, and characterized by physical and electrochemical methods. Highest catalytic activity towards oxygen-reduction reaction (ORR) is exhibited by Pt-Au/C catalyst prepared by colloidal method. The optimum atomic ratio of Pt to Au in Pt-Au/C catalyst prepared by colloidal method is determined using linear-sweep and cyclic voltammetry in conjunction with cell-polarization studies. Among 3:1, 2:1 and 1:1 Pt-Au/C catalysts, (3:1) Pt-Au/C exhibits maximum electrochemical activity towards ORR. Powder X-ray diffraction pattern and transmission electron micrograph suggest Pt-Au alloy nanoparticles to be well dispersed onto the carbon-support. Energy dispersive X-ray analysis and inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectroscopy data suggest that the atomic ratios of the alloying elements match well with the expected values. A polymer electrolyte fuel cell (PEFC) operating at 0 center dot 6 V with (3:1) Pt-Au/C cathode delivers a maximum power-density of 0 center dot 65 W/cm (2) in relation to 0 center dot 53 W/cm (2) delivered by the PEFC with pristine carbon-supported Pt cathode.

The title compound, C(14)H(17)FO(2), was obtained from anti-4a, 9a:8a,10a-diepoxy-1,4,4a,5,8,8a, 9,9a, 10,10a-decahydroanthracene via tandem hydrogen-fluoride-mediated epoxide ring-opening and transannular oxacyclization. With the two cyclohexene rings folded towards the oxygen bridge, the title tetracyclic fluoroalcohol molecule displays a conformation reminiscent of a pagoda. The crystal packing is effected via intermolecular O-H center dot center dot center dot O hydrogen bonds, which link the molecules into a zigzag chain along the b axis.

0.85PbMg(1/3)Nb(2/3)O(3)-0.15PbTiO(3) ferroelectric-relaxor thin films have been deposited on La(0.5)nSr(0.5)CoO(3)/(1 1 1) Pt/TiO(2)/SiO(2)/Si by pulsed laser ablation at various oxygen partial pressures in the range 0.05 to 0.4 Torr. All the films have a rhombohedral perovskite structure. The grain morphology and orientation are drastically affected by the oxygen pressure, studied by x-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. The domain structure investigations by dynamic contact electrostatic force microscopy have revealed that the distribution of polar nanoregions and their dynamics is influenced by the grain morphology, orientation and more importantly, oxygen vacancies. The correlation length extracted from autocorrelation function images has shown that the polarization disorder decreases with oxygen pressure up to 0.3 Torr. The presence of polarized domains and their electric field induced switching is discussed in terms of internal bias field and domain wall pinning. Film deposited at 0.4 Torr presents a curious case with unique triangular grain morphology and large polarization disorder.

Electronic states of CeO(2), Ce(1 -aEuro parts per thousand x) Pt (x) O(2 -aEuro parts per thousand delta) , and Ce(1 -aEuro parts per thousand x -aEuro parts per thousand y) Ti (y) Pt (x) O(2 -aEuro parts per thousand delta) electrodes have been investigated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy as a function of applied potential for oxygen evolution and formic acid and methanol oxidation. Ionically dispersed platinum in Ce(1 -aEuro parts per thousand x) Pt (x) O(2 -aEuro parts per thousand delta) and Ce(1 -aEuro parts per thousand x -aEuro parts per thousand y) Ti (y) Pt (x) O(2 -aEuro parts per thousand delta) is active toward these reactions compared with CeO(2) alone. Higher electrocatalytic activity of Pt(2+) ions in CeO(2) and Ce(1 -aEuro parts per thousand x) Ti (x) O(2) compared with the same amount of Pt(0) in Pt/C is attributed to Pt(2+) ion interaction with CeO(2) and Ce(1 -aEuro parts per thousand x) Ti (x) O(2) to activate the lattice oxygen of the support oxide. Utilization of this activated lattice oxygen has been demonstrated in terms of high oxygen evolution in acid medium with these catalysts. Further, ionic platinum in CeO(2) and Ce(1 -aEuro parts per thousand x) Ti (x) O(2) does not suffer from CO poisoning effect unlike Pt(0) in Pt/C due to participation of activated lattice oxygen which oxidizes the intermediate CO to CO(2). Hence, higher activity is observed toward formic acid and methanol oxidation compared with same amount of Pt metal in Pt/C.

An aerobic oxidative cross-dehydrogenative coupling reaction between sp(3) C-H and sp(2) C-H bonds is developed by employing a vanadium catalyst (10 mol%) in an aqueous medium using molecular oxygen as the oxidant. This environmentally benign strategy exhibits larger substrate scope and shows high regioselectivity.

A combined electrochemical method and X-ray photo electron spectroscopy (XPS) has been utilized to understand the Pd(2+)/CeO(2) interaction in Ce(1-x)Pd(x)O(2-delta) (x = 0.02). A constant positive potential (chronoamperometry) is applied to Ce(0.98)Pd(0.02)O(2-delta) working electrode which causes Ce(4+) to reduce to Ce(3+) to the extent of similar to 35%, while Pd remains in the +2 oxidation state. Electrochemically cycling this electrode between 0.0-1.2 V reverts back to the original state of the catalyst. This reversibility is attributed to the reversible reduction of Ce(4+) to Ce(3+) state. CeO(2) electrode with no metal component reduces to CeO(2-y) (y similar to 0.4) after applying 1.2 V which is not reversible and the original composition of CeO(2) cannot be brought back in any electrochemical condition. During the electro-catalytic oxygen evolution reaction at a constant 1.2 V for 1000 s, Ce(0.98)Pd(0.02)O(2-delta) reaches a steady state composition with Pd in the +2 states and Ce(4+) : Ce(3+) in the ratio of 0.65 : 0.35. This composition can be denoted as Ce(0.63)(4+)Ce(0.35)(4+)Pd(0.02)O(2-delta-y) (y similar to 0.17). When pure CeO(2) is put under similar electrochemical condition, it never reaches the steady state composition and reduces almost to 85%. Thus, Ce(0.98)Pd(0.02)O(2-delta) forms a stable electrode for the electro-oxidation of H(2)O to O(2) unlike CeO(2) due to the metal support interaction.

The activity coefficients of oxygen in copper-tin alloys at 1 1 00°C have been measured by two different equilibrium methodsthe cell Pt, Ni + NiO I ZrOz solid electrolyte I O[Cu + Sn], cermet. Pt and the equilibrium between Cu + Sn alloys and SnO + SiO, slags established via SnO vapour. The results from both types of measurement confirm the work of Block and co-workers and show that other data are in error. The deoxidation equilibria for Sn in liquid copper, with solid SnO, as deoxidation product, have been evaluated at temperatures of interest in copper smelting.

Pt were used to measure the activity coefficient of oxygen in liquid copper at 11 00 and 1 300eC, and in lead at 11 00'C. Similar cells were used to study the activity coefficient of oxygen in the whole range of Cu + Pb alloys at 1100'C and in lead-rich alloys at 900 and 750'C.The results obtained are discussed in terms of proposed solution models. An equation based on the formation of 'species' of the form M,O in solutions of oxygen in binary alloys is shown to fit the experimental data.

The activity coefficients of oxygen in liquid lead-tin alloys have been measured between 550 and 1100°C by use of solid oxide galvanic cells Pt, Ni-NiO I Zr02 Solid electrolyte I 0 (Pb + Sn), Cermet, Pt Pt, Fe-FeO I Zr02 Solid electrolyte I O(Pb + Sn), Cermet, Pt Alcock and Richardson's quasi-chemical equation, with the coordination number of atoms set to 2, is found to predict successfully the activity coefficients of oxygen in these alloys. The relative partial molar enthalpy and entropy of oxygen ?t 1 atom per cent in the alloys have been calculated from ttva variation of the activity coefficient with temperature. The addition of tin to an unsaturated solution of oxygen in lead is shown to decrease significantly both the partial molar enthalpy and entropy of oxygen. As the measurements were restricted to a narrow range between 750-1100'C in lead-rich alloys, however, the pronounced variation of the partial molar enthalpy of oxygen with temperature at constant alloy composition predicted by the quasi-chemical model could not be verified.

An analysis of the deoxidation of liquid copper is made by use of an Ellingham-type diagram, which incorporates data now available on interactions between copper and the deoxidant in solution. To make the diagram more quantitative information is required on interactions between oxygen and the deoxidants and the activities of component oxides in slags of interest in copper smelting.
