A solid-state miscibility gap in the pseudo-binary system BaO-SrO is delineated by X-ray diffraction studies on samples equilibrated either in vacuum or under flowing inert gas at temperatures between 1073 and 1423 K. For the SrxBa1-xO solid solution an asymmetric phase boundary, characterized by a critical temperature of 1356 (+/-4) K and composition x=0.55 (+/-0.008), is obtained. Thermodynamic mixing properties of the solid solution, derived from the experimental phase boundary compositions and temperatures, can be represented by the expression: Delta G(E)=x(1-x){33 390-7.09T)x+(29 340-6.23T)(1-x)} J mol(-1)It is necessary to include excess entropy terms to obtain a good fit to the experimental data. The chemical spinodal curve is computed from the thermodynamic parameters

Atomistic simulation of Ag, Al, Au, Cu, Ni, Pd, and Pt FCC metallic nanowires show a universal FCC -> HCP phase transformation below a critical cross-sectional size, which is reported for the first time in this paper. The newly observed HCP structure is also confirmed from previous experimental results. Above the critical cross-sectional size, initial < 100 >/{100} FCC metallic nanowires are found to be metastable. External thermal heating shows the transformation of metastable < 100 >/{100} FCC nanowires into < 110 >/{111} stable configuration. Size dependent metastability/instability is also correlated with initial residual stresses of the nanowire by use of molecular static simulation using the conjugant gradient method at a temperature of 0 K. It is found that a smaller cross-sectional dimension of an initial FCC nanowire shows instability due to higher initial residual stresses, and the nanowire is transformed into the novel HCP structure. The initial residual stress shows reduction with an increase in the cross-sectional size of the nanowires. A size dependent critical temperature is also reported for metastable FCC nanowires using molecular dynamic, to capture the < 110 >/{111} to < 100 >/{100} shape memory and pseudoelasticity.

The results of the structural and conformational studies carried out using C-13 CPMAS NMR technique on several glycine and alanine containing peptides in the solid state are reported. The study demonstrates the effects of variations in C-13 chemical shifts due to conformation and hydrogen bonding. The possibility of applying this technique to obtain insight into the conformational characteristics of peptides of unknown structures is discussed.

The coordinating behavior of a new dihydrazone ligand, 2,6-bis(3-methoxysalicylidene) hydrazinocarbonyl]pyridine towards manganese(II), cobalt(II), nickel(II), copper(II), zinc(II) and cadmium(II) has been described. The metal complexes were characterized by magnetic moments, conductivity measurements, spectral (IR, NMR, UV-Vis, FAB-Mass and EPR) and thermal studies. The ligand crystallizes in triclinic system, space group P-1, with alpha=98.491(10)degrees, beta=110.820(10)degrees and gamma=92.228(10)degrees. The cell dimensions are a=10.196(7)angstrom, b=10.814(7)angstrom, c=10.017(7)angstrom, Z=2 and V=1117.4(12). IR spectral studies reveal the nonadentate behavior of the ligand. All the complexes are neutral in nature and possess six-coordinate geometry around each metal center. The X-band EPR spectra of copper(II) complex at both room temperature and liquid nitrogen temperature showed unresolved broad signals with g(iso) = 2.106. Cyclic voltametric studies of copper(II) complex at different scan rates reveal that all the reaction occurring are irreversible. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Studies on redox supercapacitors employing electronically conducting polymers are of great importance for hybrid power sources and pulse power applications. In the present study, polyaniline (PANI) has been potentiodynamically deposited on stainless steel substrate and characterized in a gel polymer electrolyte (GPE). Use of the GPE facilitates a voltage limit of the capacitor to 1 V, instead of 0.75 V in aqueous electrolytes. From charge-discharge studies of the solid-state PANI capacitors, a specific capacitance of 250 F g(-1) has been obtained at a specific power of 7.5 kW kg(-1) of PANI. The values of specific capacitance and specific power are considerably higher than those reported in the literature. High energy and high power characteristics of the PANI are presented. Thin films of the semiconducting, monoclinic vanadium dioxide, VO2(M) have been prepared on ordinary glass by two methods: directly by low-pressure metalorganic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD), and by argon-annealing films of the VO2(B) phase deposited by MOCVD. The composition and microstructure of the films have been examined by x-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy. Films made predominantly of either the B or the M phase, as deposited, can only be obtained over a narrow range of deposition temperatures. At the lower end of this temperature range, the as-deposited films are strongly oriented, although the substrate is glass. This can be understood from the drive to minimize surface energy. Films of the B phase have a platelet morphology, which leads to an unusual microstructure at the lower-deposition temperatures. Those grown at similar to370 degreesC convert to the metallic, rutile (R) phase when annealed at 550 degreesC, whereas those deposited at 420 degreesC transform to the R phase only at 580 degreesC. (When cooled to room temperature, the annealed films convert reversibly from the R phase to the M phase.) Electron microscopy shows that annealing leads to disintegration of the single crystalline VO2(B) platelets into small crystallites of VO2(R), although the platelet morphology is retained. When the annealing temperature is relatively low, these crystallites are nanometer sized. At a higher-annealing temperature, the transformation leads to well-connected and similarly oriented large grains of VO2(R), enveloped in the original platelet. The semiconductor-metal transition near 68 degreesC leads to a large jump in resistivity in all the VO2(M) films, nearly as large as in epitaxial films on single-crystal substrates. When the annealed films contain well-connected large grains, the transition is very sharp. Even when preferred orientation is present, the transition is not as sharp in as-deposited VO2(M), because the crystallites are not densely packed as in annealed VO2(B). However, the high degree of orientation in these films leads to a narrow temperature hysteresis. (C) 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Copper(l) complexes of 1,2-bis(diphenylphosphino)ethane (dppe) with a stoichiometry Cu-2(dppe)(3)(X)(2) [X- = CN- (1), SCN- (2), NO3- (3)] are obtained from direct reactions of CuX and dppe. The complexes are structurally and spectroscopically (NMR and IR) characterized. The structure of the [Cu-2(dPPe)(3)](2+) dication is similar to the structural motif observed in many other complexes with a chelating dppe and a bridging dppe connecting two copper centers. In complexes 1 -3, the anions are confined to the cavity formed by the phosphines which force a monodentate coordination mode despite the predominant bidentate/bridging character of the anions. The coordination angles rather than the thermochemical radii dictate the steric requirement of anions. While the solution behavior of 3, with nitrate, is similar to complexes studied earlier, complexes with pseudohalides exhibit new solution behavior. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science Ltd. 9-Anthryl and 1-pyrenyl terpyridines (1 and 2, respectively), key precursors for the design of novel fluorescent sensors have been synthesized and characterized by H-1 NMR, mass spectroscopy and X-ray crystallography. Twisted molecular conformations for each 1 and 2 were observed in their single crystal structures. Energy minimization calculations for the 1 and 2 using the semi-empirical AM1 method show that the 'twisted' conformation is intrinsic to these systems. We observe interconnected networks of edge-to-face CH...pi interactions, which appear to be cooperative in nature, in each of the crystal structures. The two twisted molecules, although having differently shaped polyaromatic hydrocarbon substituents, show similar patterns of edge-to-face CH...pi interactions. The presently described systems comprise of two aromatic surfaces that are almost orthogonal to each other. This twisted or orthogonal nature of the molecules leads to the formation of interesting multi-directional ladder like supramolecular organizations. A combination of edge-to-face and face-to-face packing modes helps to stabilize these motifs. The ladder like architecture in 1 is helical in nature. (C) 2002 Published by Elsevier Science B.V.

This paper reports ab intio, DFT and transition state theory (TST) calculations on HF, HCI and CIF elimination reactions from CH2Cl-CH2F molecule. Both the ground state and the transition state for HX elimination reactions have been optimized at HF, MP2 and DFT calculations with 6-31G*, 6-31G** and 6-311++G** basis sets. In addition, CCSD(T) single point calculations were carried out with MP2/6-311++G** optimized geometry for more accurate determination of the energies of the minima and transition state, compared to the other methods employed here. Classical barriers are converted to Arrhenius activation energy by TST calculations for comparisons with experimental results. The pre-exponential factors, A, calculated at all levels of theory are significantly larger than the experimental values. For activation energy, E-a DFT gives good results for HF elimination, within 4-8 W mol(-1) from experimental values. None of the methods employed, including CCSD(T), give comparable results for HCI elimination reactions. However, rate constants calculated by CCSD(T) method are in very good agreement with experiment for HCI elimination and they are in reasonable agreement for HF elimination reactions. Due to the strong correlation between A and E., the rate constants could be fit to a lower A and E-a (as given by experimental fitting, corresponding to a tight TS) or to larger A and E-a (as given by high level ab initio calculations, corresponding to a loose TS). The barrier for CIF elimination is determined to be 607 U mol(-1) at HF level and it is unlikely to be important for CH2FCH2Cl. Results for other CH2X-CH2Y (X,Y = F/Cl) are included for comparison.

Hexagonal Dy(0.5)Y(0.5)MnO(3), a multiferroic rare-earth manganite with geometrically frustrated antiferromagnetism, has been investigated with single-crystal neutron diffraction measurements. Below 3.4 K magnetic order is observed on both the Mn (antiferromagnetic) and Dy (ferrimagnetic) sublattices that is identical to that of undiluted hexagonal DyMnO(3) at low temperature. The Mn moments undergo a spin reorientation transition between 3.4 K and 10 K, with antiferromagnetic order of the Mn sublattice persisting up to 70 K; the antiferromagnetic order in this phase is distinct from that observed in undiluted (h) DyMnO(3), yielding a qualitatively new phase diagram not seen in other hexagonal rare-earth manganites. A magnetic field applied parallel to the crystallographic c axis will drive a transition from the antiferromagnetic phase into the low-temperature ferrimagnetic phase with little hysteresis.

An isothermal section of the phase diagram for the system Nd-Pd-O at 1350 K has been established by equilibration of samples representing 13 different compositions and phase identification after quenching by optical and scanning electron microscopy, x-ray diffraction, and energy dispersive analysis of x-rays. The binary oxides PdO and NdO were not stable at 1350 K. Two ternary oxides Nd4PdO7 and Nd2Pd2O5 were identified. Solid and liquid alloys, as well as the intermetallics NdPd3 and NdPd5, were found to be in equilibrium with Nd2O3. Based on the phase relations, three solidstate cells were designed to measure the Gibbs energies of formation of PdO and the two ternary oxides. An advanced version of the solid-state cell incorporating a buffer electrode was used for high-temperature thermodynamic measurements. The function of the buffer electrode, placed between reference and working electrodes, was to absorb the electrochemical flux of the mobile species through the solid electrolyte caused by trace electronic conductivity. The buffer electrode prevented polarization of the measuring electrode and ensured accurate data. Yttria-stabilized zirconia was used as the solid electrolyte and pure oxygen gas at a pressure of 0.1 MP a as the reference electrode. Electromotive force measurements, conducted from 950 to 1425 K, indicated the presence of a third ternary oxide Nd2PdO4, stable below 1135 (±10) K. Additional cells were designed to study this compound. The standard Gibbs energy of formation of PdO (†f G 0) was measured from 775 to 1125 Kusing two separate cell designs against the primary reference standard for oxygen chemical potential. Based on the thermodynamic information, chemical potential diagrams for the system Nd-Pd-O were also developed.

An advanced design of the solid-state cell incorporating a buffer electrode has been developed for high temperature thermodynamic measurements. The function of the buffer electrode, placed between reference and working electrodes, was to absorb the electrochemical flux of the mobile species through the solid electrolyte caused by trace electronic conductivity. The buffer electrode prevented polarization of the measuring electrode and ensured accurate data. The application of the novel design and its advantages have been demonstrated by measuring the standard Gibbs energies of formation of ternary oxides of the system Sm–Pd–O. Yttria-stabilized zirconia was used as the solid electrolyte and pure oxygen gas at a pressure of 0.1 MPa as the reference electrode. For the design of appropriate working electrodes, phase relations in the ternary system Sm–Pd–O were investigated at 1273 K. The two ternary oxides, Sm4PdO7 and Sm2Pd2O5, compositions of which fall on the Sm2O3–PdO join, were found to coexist with pure metal Pd. The thermodynamic properties of the ternary oxides were measured using three-phase electrodes in the temperature range 950–1425 K. During electrochemical measurements a third ternary oxide, Sm2PdO4, was found to be stable at low temperature. The standard Gibbs energies of formation (Δf(ox)Go) of the compounds from their component binary oxides Sm2O3 and PdO, can be represented by the equations: Sm4PdO7: Δf(ox)Go (J mol−1)=−34,220+0.84T(K) (±280); Sm2PdO4: Δf(ox)Go (J mol−1)=−33,350+2.49T(K) (±230); Sm2Pd2O5: Δf(ox)Go (J mol−1)=−59,955+1.80T(K) (±320). Based on the thermodynamic information, three-dimensional P–T–C and chemical potential diagrams for the system Sm–Pd–O were developed.
