The general equation for one-dimensional wave propagation at low flow Mach numbers (M less-than-or-equals, slant0·2) is derived and is solved analytically for conical and exponential shapes. The transfer matrices are derived and shown to be self-consistent. Comparison is also made with the relevant data available in the literature. The transmission loss behaviour of conical and exponential pipes, and mufflers involving these shapes, are studied. Analytical expressions of the same are given for the case of a stationary medium. The mufflers involving conical and exponential pipes are shown to be inferior to simple expansion chambers (of similar dimensions) at higher frequencies from the point of view of noise abatement, as was observed earlier experimentally.

We present a complete solution to the problem of coherent-mode decomposition of the most general anisotropic Gaussian Schell-model (AGSM) beams, which constitute a ten-parameter family. Our approach is based on symmetry considerations. Concepts and techniques familiar from the context of quantum mechanics in the two-dimensional plane are used to exploit the Sp(4, R) dynamical symmetry underlying the AGSM problem. We take advantage of the fact that the symplectic group of first-order optical system acts unitarily through the metaplectic operators on the Hilbert space of wave amplitudes over the transverse plane, and, using the Iwasawa decomposition for the metaplectic operator and the classic theorem of Williamson on the normal forms of positive definite symmetric matrices under linear canonical transformations, we demonstrate the unitary equivalence of the AGSM problem to a separable problem earlier studied by Li and Wolf [Opt. Lett. 7, 256 (1982)] and Gori and Guattari [Opt. Commun. 48, 7 (1983)]. This conn ction enables one to write down, almost by inspection, the coherent-mode decomposition of the general AGSM beam. A universal feature of the eigenvalue spectrum of the AGSM family is noted.

SAW matched filter is commonly used in spread spectrum communication receivers in order to maximize the SNR prior to detection, At times the receiver would be a mobile one while the signal is processed at the IF level, In that case frequency deviations due to Doppler shift or temperature dependence of the acoustic medium used for SAW device would, severely effect it's performance, The impact of these errors on the receiver performance is analyzed on a generalised basis.

Wave pipelining is a design technique for increasing the throughput of a digital circuit or system without introducing pipelining registers between adjacent combinational logic blocks in the circuit/system. However, this requires balancing of the delays along all the paths from the input to the output which comes the way of its implementation. Static CMOS is inherently susceptible to delay variation with input data, and hence, receives a low priority for wave pipelined digital design. On the other hand, ECL and CML, which are amenable to wave pipelining, lack the compactness and low power attributes of CMOS. In this paper we attempt to exploit wave pipelining in CMOS technology. We use a single generic building block in Normal Process Complementary Pass Transistor Logic (NPCPL), modeled after CPL, to achieve equal delay along all the propagation paths in the logic structure. An 8×8 b multiplier is designed using this logic in a 0.8 ?m technology. The carry-save multiplier architecture is modified suitably to support wave pipelining, viz., the logic depth of all the paths are made identical. The 1 mm×0.6 mm multiplier core supports a throughput of 400 MHz and dissipates a total power of 0.6 W. We develop simple enhancements to the NPCPL building blocks that allow the multiplier to sustain throughputs in excess of 600 MHz. The methodology can be extended to introduce wave pipelining in other circuits as well

Using intensity autocorrelation of multiply scattered light, we show that the increase in interparticle interaction in dense, binary colloidal fluid mixtures of particle diameters 0.115µm and 0.089µm results in freezing into a crystalline phase at volume fraction? of 0.1 and into a glassy state at?=0.2. The functional form of the field autocorrelation functiong (1)(t) for the binary fluid phase is fitted to exp[??(6k 0 2 D eff t)1/2] wherek 0 is the magnitude of the incident light wavevector and? is a parameter inversely proportional to the photon transport mean free pathl*. TheD eff is thel* weighted average of the individual diffusion coefficients of the pure species. Thel* used in calculatingD eff was computed using the Mie theory. In the solid (crystal or glass) phase, theg (1)(t) is fitted (only with a moderate success) to exp[??(6k 0 2 W(t))1/2] where the mean-squared displacementW(t) is evaluated for a harmonically bound overdamped Brownian oscillator. It is found that the fitted parameter? for both the binary and monodisperse suspensions decreases significantly with the increase of interparticle interactions. This has been justified by showing that the calculated values ofl* in a monodisperse suspension using Mie theory increase very significantly with the interactions incorporated inl* via the static structure factor.

Atomic vibration in the Carbon Nanotubes (CNTs) gives rise to non-local interactions. In this paper, an expression for the non-local scaling parameter is derived as a function of the geometric and electronic properties of the rolled graphene sheet in single-walled CNTs. A self-consistent method is developed for the linearization of the problem of ultrasonic wave propagation in CNTs. We show that (i) the general three-dimensional elastic problem leads to a single non-local scaling parameter (e(0)), (ii) e(0) is almost constant irrespective of chirality of CNT in the case of longitudinal wave propagation, (iii) e(0) is a linear function of diameter of CNT for the case of torsional mode of wave propagation, (iv) e(0) in the case of coupled longitudinal-torsional modes of wave propagation, is a function which exponentially converges to that of axial mode at large diameters and to torsional mode at smaller diameters. These results are valid in the long-wavelength limit. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The present work deals with an ultrasonic type of wave propagation characteristics of monolayer graphene on silicon (Si) substrate. An atomistic model of a hybrid lattice involving a hexagonal lattice of graphene and surface atoms of diamond lattice of Si is developed to identify the carbon-silicon bond stiffness. Properties of this hybrid lattice model is then mapped into a nonlocal continuum framework. Equivalent force constant due to Si substrate is obtained by minimizing the total potential energy of the system. For this equilibrium configuration, the nonlocal governing equations are derived to analyze the ultrasonic wave dispersion based on spectral analysis. From the present analysis we show that the silicon substrate affects only the flexural wave mode. The frequency band gap of flexural mode is also significantly affected by this substrate. The results also show that, the silicon substrate adds cushioning effect to the graphene and it makes the graphene more stable. The analysis also show that the frequency bang gap relations of in-plane (longitudinal and lateral) and out-of-plane (flexural) wave modes depends not only on the y-direction wavenumber but also on nonlocal scaling parameter. In the nonlocal analysis, at higher values of the y-directional wavenumber, a decrease in the frequency band gap is observed for all the three fundamental wave modes in the graphene-silicon system. The atoms movement in the graphene due to the wave propagation are also captured for all the tree fundamental wave modes. The results presented in this work are qualitatively different from those obtained based on the local analysis and thus, are important for the development of graphene based nanodevices such as strain sensor, mass and pressure sensors, atomic dust detectors and enhancer of surface image resolution that make use of the ultrasonic wave dispersion properties of graphene. The prime focus of this study is to design a 50 mm internal diameter diaphragmless shock tube that can be used in an industrial facility for repeated loading of shock waves. The instantaneous rise in pressure and temperature of a medium can be used in a variety of industrial applications. We designed, fabricated and tested three different shock wave generators of which one system employs a highly elastic rubber membrane and the other systems use a fast acting pneumatic valve instead of conventional metal diaphragms. The valve opening speed is obtained with the help of a high speed camera. For shock generation systems with a pneumatic cylinder, it ranges from 0.325 to 1.15 m/s while it is around 8.3 m/s for the rubber membrane. Experiments are conducted using the three diaphragmless systems and the results obtained are analyzed carefully to obtain a relation between the opening speed of the valve and the amount of gas that is actually utilized in the generation of the shock wave for each system. The rubber membrane is not suitable for industrial applications because it needs to be replaced regularly and cannot withstand high driver pressures. The maximum shock Mach number obtained using the new diaphragmless system that uses the pneumatic valve is 2.125 +/- 0.2%. This system shows much promise for automation in an industrial environment.

Two mixed boundary value problems associated with two-dimensional Laplace equation, arising in the study of scattering of surface waves in deep water (or interface waves in two superposed fluids) in the linearised set up, by discontinuities in the surface (or interface) boundary conditions, are handled for solution by the aid of the Weiner-Hopf technique applied to a slightly more general differential equation to be solved under general boundary conditions and passing on to the limit in a manner so as to finally give rise to the solutions of the original problems. The first problem involves one discontinuity while the second problem involves two discontinuities. The reflection coefficient is obtained in closed form for the first problem and approximately for the second. The behaviour of the reflection coefficient for both the problems involving deep water against the incident wave number is depicted in a number of figures. It is observed that while the reflection coefficient for the first problem steadily increases with the wave number, that for the second problem exhibits oscillatory behaviour and vanishes at some discrete values of the wave number. Thus, there exist incident wave numbers for which total transmission takes place for the second problem. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

A simple method to generate time domain tailored waveforms for excitation of ion axial amplitude in Paul trap mass spectrometers is described. The method is based on vector summation of sine waves followed by time domain sampling to obtain the discrete time domain data. A smoothing technique based on the time domain Kaiser window is then applied to the data so as to minimize the frequency domain Gibb's oscillations. The dynamic range of the time domain signal is controlled by phase modulation and time extension of the time domain waveform. Copyright (C) 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Synthesis, crystal structures, linear and nonlinear optical properties of tris D-pi-A cryptand derivatives with C-3 symmetry are reported. Three fold symmetry inherent in the cryptand molecules has been utilized for designing these molecules. Molecular nonlinearities have been measured by hyper-Rayleigh scattering (HRS) experiments. Among the compounds studied, L-1 adopts non-centrosymmetric crystal structure. Compounds L-1, L-2, L-3 and L-4 show a measurable SHG powder signal. These molecules are more isotropic and have significantly higher melting points than the classical p-nitroaniline based dipolar NLO compounds, making them useful for further device applications. Besides, different acceptor groups can be attached to the cryptand molecules to modulate their NLO properties.

A method has been presented to establish the theoretical dispersion curve for performing the inverse analysis for the Rayleigh wave propagation. The proposed formulation is similar to the one available in literature, and is based on the finite difference formulation of the governing partial differential equations of motion. The method is framed in such a way that it ultimately leads to an Eigen value problem for which the solution can be obtained quite easily with respect to unknown frequency. The maximum absolute value of the vertical displacement at the ground surface is formed as the basis for deciding the governing mode of propagation. With the proposed technique, the numerical solutions were generated for a variety of problems, comprising of a number of different layers, associated with both ground and pavements. The results are found to be generally satisfactory. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Two new classes of mono- and bis-D-pi-A cryptand derivatives with a flexible and a rigid cryptand core have been synthesized. The linear and nonlinear optical properties of these molecules are probed. The three dimensional cavity of the cryptand moiety has been utilized to modulate the SHG intensity to different extents in solution with metal ion inputs such as Ni-II,Cu-II,Zn-II, and Cd-II. We also report that decomplexation events can be used to reversibly modulate their NLO responses.
