The Modified Crack Closure Integral (MCCI) technique based on Irwin's crack closure integral concept is very effective for estimation of strain energy release rates G in individual as well as mixed-mode configurations in linear elastic fracture mechanics problems. In a finite element approach, MCCI can be evaluated in the post-processing stage in terms of nodal forces and displacements near the crack tip. The MCCI expressions are however, element dependent and require a systematic derivation using stress and displacement distributions in the crack tip elements. Earlier a general procedure was proposed by the present authors for the derivation of MCCI expressions for 3-dimensional (3-d) crack problems modelled with 8-noded brick elements. A concept of sub-area integration was proposed to estimate strain energy release rates at a large number of points along the crack front. In the present paper a similar procedure is adopted for the derivation of MCCI expressions for 3-d cracks modelled with 20-noded brick elements. Numerical results are presented for centre crack tension and edge crack shear specimens in thick slabs, showing a comparison between present results and those available in the literature.

The accumulation of fly ash throughout the world is several million tons per day. The main problem with the usage of fly ash is the slow rate of strength gain, primarily due to slow pozzolanic reactions. Existing methods of proportioning fly ash concrete are lacking. These methods are involved and do not directly take into account the properties of the constituent materials. The Generalized Approach for Mix Proportioning developed at the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, is the basis for the development of the proposed method, which takes into account the characteristics of cement, fly ash, and aggregates. Based on the basic trial mix data obtained by using the American Concrete Institute (ACI 211.1-81) method, the proportions of fly-ash concrete mixes were arrived at using the Generalized Approach for Mix Proportioning. The method proposed was applied to and found applicable for fly-ash concretes using fly ashes from two different sources.

The entry of the plant toxin ricin and its A- and B-subunits in model membranes in the presence as well as absence of monosialoganglioside (GM(1)) has been studied. Dioleoylphosphatidylcholine and 5-, 10-, and 12-doxyl- or 9,10-dibromophosphatidylcholines serve as quenchers of intrinsic tryptophan fluorescence of the proteins. The parallax method of Chattopadhyay and London [(1987) Biochemistry 26, 39-45] has been employed to measure the average membrane penetration depth of tryptophans of ricin and its B-chain and the actual depth of the sole Trp 211 in the A-chain. The results indicate that both of the chains as well as intact ricin penetrate the membrane deeply and the C-terminal end of the A-chain is well inside the bilayer, especially at pH 4.5. An extrinsic probe N-(iodoacetyl)-N'-(5-sulfo-1-naphthyl) ethylenediamine (I-AEDANS) has been attached to Cys 259 of the A-chain, and the kinetics of penetration has been followed by monitoring the increase in AEDANS fluorescence at 480 nm. The insertion follows first-order kinetics, and the rate constant is higher at a lower pH. The energy transfer distance analysis between Trp 211 and AEDANS points out that the conformation of the A-chain changes as it inserts into the membrane. CD studies indicate that the helicity of the proteins increases after penetration, which implies that some of the unordered structure in the native protein is converted to the ordered form during this process. Hydrophobic forces seem to be responsible for stabilizing a particular protein conformation inside the membrane.

Analysis of experimental data of soils in both the normally consolidated and overconsolidated states reveal that the proposed relationships are tenable. Preconsolidation stress level influences the level of permeability.

In the present study, a lug joint fitted with an interference fit (oversized) pin is considered with radial through cracks situated at diametrically opposite points perpendicular to the loading direction. A finite element contact stress algorithm is developed with linear elastic assumptions to deal with varying partial contact/separation at the pin-plate interface using a marching solution. Stress Intensity Factor (SIF) at the crack tips is evaluated using the Modified Crack Closure Integral (MCCI) method. The effect of change in crack length and edge distance on the load-contact relation, SIFs and stress distributions are studied. A rigorous plane stress elasticity solution of the pin-plate interface at the crack mouth confirmed the existence of the stress concentration leading to a local peak in the radial stress at the crack mouth and provided a method of estimating it quantitatively. Rigorous elastic-plastic finite element analysis of joints subjected to cyclic loading is carried out. An incremental-iterative algorithm is developed in a modular form combining elasto-plastic material behaviour and contact stress analysis. For the case of the interference fit, the analysis sequentially carries out insertion of the pin and application of the load on the joint, covering possible initiation of separation (and/or yielding) and progressively the receding/advancing contact at the pin-plate interface. Deformations of both the plate and the pin are considered in the analysis. Numerical examples are presented for the case of an interference fit pin in a large plate under remote cyclic tension, and for an interference fit pin lug joint subjected to cyclic loading. A detailed study is carried out for the latter problem considering the effect of change in contact/separation at the pin-plate interface on local stresses, strains and redistribution of these stresses with the spread of a plastic zone. The results of the study are a useful input for the estimation of the fatigue life of joints. Copyright (C) 1996 Elsevier Science Ltd

Considering cement based composites as chemically bonded ceramics (CBC) the consequent strength development with age is essentially a constant volume solidification process, such that the hydrated gel particles fill the space resulting in the compatible gel space ratios. Analysis has been done of the extensively used graphical method of mix design (British method of mix design) i.e., the relation between the compressive strength and the free water - cement ratio. By considering the strength (S) at w/c 0.5 (S-0.5) as the reference state to reflect the synergetic effects between constituents of concrete a generalized relationship obtained is of the form {S/S-0.5} = a + b {1/(w/c)}.

Fungal endophytes of tropical trees are expected to be exceptionally species rich as a consequence of high tree diversity in the tropics and the purported host restriction among the endophytes. Based on this premise, endophytes have been regarded as a focal group for estimating fungal numbers because their possible hyperdiverse nature would reflect significantly global fungal diversity. We present our consolidated ten-year work on 75 dicotyledonous tree hosts belonging to 33 families and growing in three different types of tropical forests of the NBR in the Western Ghats, southern India. We conclude that endophyte diversity in these forests is limited due to loose host affiliations among endophytes. Some endophytes have a wide host range and colonize taxonomically disparate hosts suggesting adaptations in them to counter a variety of defense chemicals in their hosts. Furthermore, such polyphagous endophytes dominate the endophyte assemblages of different tree hosts. Individual leaves may be densely colonized but only by a few endophyte species. It appears that the environment (the type of forest in this case) has a larger role in determining the endophyte assemblage of a plant host than the taxonomy of the host plant. Thus, different tropical plant communities have to be studied for their endophyte diversity to test the generalization that endophytes are hyperdiverse in the tropics, estimate their true species richness, and use them as a predictor group for more accurate assessment of global fungal diversity.

Concrete is basically a heterogeneous material made up of ingredients with distinct physical and mechanical properties. As a result, the presence of interphases is inevitable. In the processing of concrete, fresh and hardened states are the two distinct stages. In the fresh state, the presence of inert constituents in the cement mortar matrix only dilutes the overall potential of concrete to flow. In the hardened state the synergetics play a dominant role in strength development. When the strength of coarse aggregate is far higher than the strength levels for which the matrix or concrete is processed, interphase bonding plays a dominant role on the strength. When the matrix strength is comparable to that of the aggregate strength, in contrast, the concrete strength is affected by the aggregate strength. Besides these aspects, the effects of the size and the surface texture of coarse aggregates have also been analysed. Copyright (C) 1996 Elsevier Science Ltd.

Mechanical fasteners introduce structural weakness, still they are an essential constituent of most structures as they permit interchangeability of parts and flexible construction programs; Variable temperature operations of Aerospace and Nuclear structures make it imperative to investigate the thermoelastic behaviour of joints. This paper explores analytically similar mechanical and thermal parameters to generalise the thermomechanical behaviour of a pin joint in an isotropic Sheet for a class of configurations. This generalization enables virtually direct application of existing information regarding joints under pure mechanical loading to joints subjected to combined thermomechanical loading, thus reducing the efforts of both the analyst and the designer by an order of magnitude. Nonconservatively loaded columns. which have stochastically distributed material property values and stochastic loadings in space are considered. Young's modulus and mass density are treated to constitute random fields. The support stiffness coefficient and tip follower load are considered to be random variables. The fluctuations of external and distributed loadings are considered to constitute a random field. The variational formulation is adopted to get the differential equation and boundary conditions. The non self-adjoint operators are used at the boundary of the regularity domain. The statistics of vibration frequencies and modes are obtained using the standard perturbation method, by treating the fluctuations to be stochastic perturbations. Linear dependence of vibration and stability parameters over property value fluctuations and loading fluctuations are assumed. Bounds for the statistics of vibration frequencies are obtained. The critical load is first evaluated for the averaged problem and the corresponding eigenvalue statistics are sought. Then, the frequency equation is employed to transform the eigenvalue statistics to critical load statistics. Specialization of the general procedure to Beck, Leipholz and Pfluger columns is carried out. For Pfluger column, nonlinear transformations are avoided by directly expressing the critical load statistics in terms of input variable statistics.

As a seepage barrier slurry trench material should have a relatively low coefficient of permeability, in the range of 10(-7) cm/s, and at the same time should be compatible with surrounding material with regard to compressibility. Although bentonite-sand/soil mixes are used widely, there is no specific engineering approach to proportion these mixes that satisfies the above practical requirements. In this paper, a generalized approach is presented for predicting the permeability and compressibility characteristics of mixes with minimum input parameters. This approach will be helpful in proportioning mixes and predicting corresponding changes in engineering behavior. It is possible to proportion a mix to arrive at the required compressibility without affecting the permeability. This is explained using an illustrative example.

Flexible-link mechanisms are those linkage mechanisms (or structures) which are capable of motion by virtue of elastic deformation of one or more;links. In such mechanisms a single flexible link; can replace several rigid links and joints resulting in fewer links, fewer pin joints, reduced overall weight and reduced mechanical error. In spite of such clear advantages, contributions toward flexible-link mechanisms remain very scarce. The area of flexible-link mechanisms offers much scope for further exploration. This paper attempts to show the potential of flexible-link mechanisms in accomplishing a kinematic task like path generation. Synthesis of a four-bar mechanism with a flexible rocker for circular and straight line path generation is carried out. Displacement analysis of the structure is carried out using finite element method (FEM) and synthesis is formulated and solved as an optimization problem. Several numerical examples are presented for illustration. Based on the results obtained with these examples, the flexible-link mechanism considered shows good promise for-path generation.
