We have examined the stability of the ferromagnetic (FM) state in CaRuO3 and SrRuO3 as a function of the GdFeO3 distortion. Model calculations predict the dependence of the FM transition temperature (T-c) on the rotation angle theta to vary as cos(2)(2 theta) for e(g)-electron systems. However, here, we find an initial increase and then the expected decrease. Furthermore, a much faster decrease is found than predicted for e(g)-electron systems. Considering the specific case of CaRuO3, a larger deviation of the Ru-O-Ru angle from 180 degrees in CaRuO3 as compared to SrRuO3 should result in a more reduced bandwidth, thereby making the former more correlated. The absence of long-range magnetic order in the more correlated CaRuO3 is traced to the strong collapse of various exchange interaction strengths that arises primarily from the volume reduction and increased distortion of the RuO6 octahedra network that accompanies the presence of a smaller ion at the A site.

Important issues of water and thermal history affecting ion transport in a representative plastic crystalline lithium salt electrolyte: succinonitrile (SN)-lithium perchlorate (LiClO4) are discussed here. Ionic conductivity of electrolytes with high lithium salt amounts (similar to 1 M) in SN at a particular temperature is known to be influenced both by the trans-gauche isomerism and ion association (solvation), the two most important intrinsic parameters of the plastic solvent. In the present study both water and thermal history influence SN and result in enhancement of ionic conductivity of 1 M LiClO4-SN electrolyte. Systematic observations reveal that the presence of water in varying amounts promote ion-pair dissociation in the electrolyte. While trace amounts (approximate to 1-15 ppm) do not affect the trans-gauche isomerism of SN, the presence of water in large amounts (approximate to 5500 ppm) submerges the plasticity of SN. Subjugating the electrolyte to different thermal protocol resulted in enhancement of trans concentration only. This is an interesting observation as it demonstrates a simple and effective procedure involving utilization of an optimized set of external parameters to decouple solvation from trans-gauche isomerism. Observations from the ionic conductivity of various samples were accounted by changes in signature isomer and ion-association bands in the mid-IR regime and also from plastic to normal crystal transition temperature peak obtained from thermal studies. Exposure with above band gap light and thermal annealing at a temperature near to glass transition temperature, of thermally evaporated amorphous (As2S3)(0.87)Sb-0.13 thin films of 1 mu m thickness, were found to be accompanied by structural effects, which in turn, lead to changes in the optical properties. The optical properties of thin films induced by illumination and annealing were studied by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and Raman spectroscopy. Photo darkening or photo bleaching was observed in the film depending upon the conditions of the light exposure or annealing. These changes of the optical properties are assigned to the change of homopolar bond densities. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Glassy B&, the parent compound of the superionic conductor LiI-Li&B& has been studied by the molecular dynamics technique using a new potential model. The results suggest that the glass is made up of local units of four-membered B2S2 rings bridged by sulfur atoms, leading to a chainlike structure. Various pair correlation functions have been analyzed, and the B2Sz rings have been found to be planar. The calculated neutron structure factor shows a peak at 1.4 A-' which has been attributed to B-B correlations at 5.6 A. The glass transition temperature of the simulated system has been calculated to be around 800 K.

Epoxy nanocomposite samples with a good dispersion of alumina nanoparticles in epoxy matrix were prepared and experiments were performed to measure their partial discharge resistant characteristics. Epoxy alumina nanocomposites with 0.1, 1, 5, 10 and 15 wt% nanofillers were prepared in the laboratory and partial discharge (PD) experiments were conducted at a voltage of 10 kV for different durations using IEC (b) type electrodes. The degradation of the sample surfaces were analyzed using SEM techniques, surface profile studies, FTIR spectroscopy as well as PD studies. An attempt was made to understand the interaction dynamics between the nanoparticle and the epoxy chain by measuring the glass transition temperature of the nanocomposites. The partial discharge resistance obtained for the nanocomposites are compared with those of unfilled epoxy and epoxy microcomposites. It was observed that even with 0.1 wt% of nanofiller added to the epoxy matrix, the partial discharge resistance to degradation gets improved considerably. It was also observed that the inter particle distance has a significant effect on the discharge resistance to degradation. The improvement in the degradation resistance is attributed to the interactions between the nanoparticle and the epoxy chain. A possible mechanism for the surface degradation of nanocomposites has been proposed.

Potassium disilicate glass and melt have been investigated by using a new partial charge based potential model in which nonbridging oxygens are differentiated from bridging oxygens by their charges. The model reproduces the structural data pertaining to the coordination polyhedra around potassium and the various bond angle distributions excellently. The dynamics of the glass has been studied by using space and time correlation functions. It is found that K ions migrate by a diffusive mechanism in the melt and by hops below the glass transition temperature. They are also found to migrate largely through nonbridging oxygenrich sites in the silicate matrix, thus providing support to the predictions of the modified random network model.

A powder neutron diffraction study was carried out on 0.8BiFeO(3)-0.2PbTiO(3) in the temperature range 27-1000 degrees C. The system exhibits magnetic transition at similar to 300 degrees C and a rhombohedral (R3c)-cubic (Pm3m) ferroelectric phase transition at similar to 650 degrees C. Anomalous variation in the lattice parameters and the octahedral tilt angle is observed across the magnetic transition temperature. In the magnetic phase, the c parameter is contracted and the octahedral tilt angle is slightly increased. The results suggest coupling between the spin, lattice and structural degrees of freedom. Electron transport and magnetic properties of several compositions of the La1-xSx-zYzMnO3 system have been investigated in order to explore the effect of yttrium substitution on the magnetoresistance and related properties of these manganates. Yttrium substitution lowers the T-c and the insulator-metal transition temperature, while increasing the peak resistivity. A comparison of the properties of La1-xSrx-zYzMnO3 with the corresponding La1-xCax-zYzMnO3 compositions shows that the observed properties can be related to the average size of the A-site cations.

The magnitude and stability of the induced dipolar orientation of 2-methyl-4-nitroaniline (MNA)/poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) guest/host system is investigated. The chromophores are aligned using both the corona discharge and contact electrode poling techniques. The magnitude of order parameter (also an indicator for the second order nonlinear susceptibility) is measured by recording absorbances of the poled (by the two different techniques) and unpoled PMMA films at different concentrations of MNA. Under the same conditions the corona poling technique creates a higher alignment of molecules along the field direction. The time dependence of the second harmonic intensity of the MNA/PMMA film prepared by the two techniques can be described by a Kohlrausch-Williams-Watts stretched exponential. The temperature dependence of the decay time constant is found to generally follow a modified Williams-Landel-Ferry (WLF) or Vogel-Tamann-Fulcher (VTF) equation. The glass transition temperature seems to be the single most important parameter for determining the relaxation time tau(T).

We have studied resistivity, magnetization, and magnetoresistance in polycrystalline La0.67Ba0.33MnOz by reducing the oxygen stoichiometry from z=2.99 to 2.80. As the oxygen content decreases, the resistivity of La0.67Ba0.33 MnOz increases and the magnetic transition temperature shifts to lower temperature. A large magnetoresistance effect was observed over a wide temperature range for all samples except the insulating z=2.80 sample. The similarity between our results on oxygen-deficient polycrystalline La0.67 Ba0.33MnOz and films previously reported to have a very large intrinsic magnetoresistance is discussed. At low temperature the magnetoresistance was observed to be strongly dependent on the magnetization. A possible mechanism for this effect is discussed.

The effect of molecular structure on density has been examined in high molecular weight esters (molecular weight 300-900), having varying degrees of branching. Densities were calculated from an empirical equation, which agrees well with the experimental values (error +/-1.5%), irrespective of branching. Since density is related to molecular packing and hence to the molecular rotation, in n-alkanes, the glass transition temperature (T(g)) and density both increase with molecular weight, and hence T(g) is directly related to the density. The esters exhibit a complex behavior. In linear esters the T(g) decreases with molecular weight which is explained from group contribution and molecular interactions. In the +-branched esters, however, T(g) decreases with molecular weight until the molecular weight reaches 600 and increases sharply thereafter. The Y-branched esters show an intermediate behavior. The dependence of T(g) on molecular weight has been explained from the segmental motion.

The La0.6Pb0.4MnO3(LPMO) thin films were in situ deposited at different oxygen partial pressure and at a substrate temperature of 630 degrees C by pulsed laser deposition. The films grown at lower oxygen partial pressures showed an increase in lattice parameter and resistivity and a decrease in the insulator-metal transition temperature as compared to the stoichiometric LPMO thin film grown at 400 mTorr. Further, these oxygen-deficient thin films showed over 70% giant magnetoresistance (GMR) near the insulator-metal transition temperature against the 40% GMR in the case of stoichiometric thin films. Chalcogenide glasses with compositions Ge7.5AsyTe92.5-y (y = 20, 40, 45, 47.5, 50, 52.5, 55) and Ge10AsyTe90-y (y = 15, 20, 22.5, 35, 40, 45, 50) have been prepared by the melt-quenching technique. The amorphous nature of these glasses has been confirmed by X-ray powder diffractometry. The thermal stability of these glasses has been studied using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The compositional dependence of the glass transition temperature, T(g), the crystallization temperatures, T(c1) and T(c2), and the melting temperature, T(m), are reported. The glass-forming tendency, K(gl), and the activation energy of crystallization, E, are calculated. The activation energy decreases with increasing tellurium content for both sets of glasses.

The flow and vaporization behaviors of long-chain esters of varying molecular weights (300-900) ana branching (linear, Y-shaped, and +-shaped molecules) have been studied. The flow behavior is found to depend on the structure as well as the molecular weight. Below a molecular weight of 600, the molecules flow wholly but above this, segmental motion occurs, and the flow becomes independent of the molecular weight which is explained from the blob model. The blob concept demonstrates that the hole of a size of about 11 angstrom is needed for the flow to occur and it is much less than the size of the molecule. The blob size is observed to slightly decrease along the series linear and Y- and +-branched esters. The heat of vaporization is found to be independent of the molecular structure since the molecules acquire a coiled spherical shape during vaporization and hence depends only on the molecular weight. A significant structural effect is observed for the esters on their glass transition temperature (T(g)). The T(g) vs molecular weight plot displays contrasting trend for linear and +-branched esters, with Y esters showing an intermediate behavior. It is explained from their molecular packing and entanglement as visualized by the blob model.
