Single-step low-temperature solution combustion (LCS) synthesis was adopted for the preparation of LaMnO3+ (LM) nanopowders. The powders were well characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS),surface area and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The PXRD of as-formed LM showed a cubic phase but, upon calcination (900degrees C, 6 h), it transformed into a rhombohedral phase. The effect of fuel on the formation of LM was examined, and its structure and magnetoresistance properties were investigated. Magnetoresistance (MR) measurements on LM were carried out at 0, 1, 4 and 7 T between 300 and 10 K. LM (fuel-to-oxidizer ratio; = 1) showed an MR of 17% at 1 T, whereas, for 4 and 7 T, it exhibited an MR of 45 and 55%, respectively, near the TM-I. Metallic resistivity data below TM-I showed that the double exchange interaction played a major role in this compound. It was interesting to observe that the sample calcined at 1200 degrees C for 3 h exhibited insulator behavior.

Extended self-similarity (ESS), a procedure that remarkably extends the range of scaling for structure functions in Navier-Stokes turbulence and thus allows improved determination of intermittency exponents, has never been fully explained. We show that ESS applies to Burgers turbulence at high Reynolds numbers and we give the theoretical explanation of the numerically observed improved scaling at both the IR and UV end, in total a gain of about three quarters of a decade: there is a reduction of subdominant contributions to scaling when going from the standard structure function representation to the ESS representation. We conjecture that a similar situation holds for three-dimensional incompressible turbulence and suggest ways of capturing subdominant contributions to scaling.

The electron-energy equation for an atomic radiating plasma is considered in this work. Using the atomic model of Bates, Kingston and McWhirter, the radiation loss-term valid for all optical thicknesses is obtained. A study of the energy gained by electrons in inelastic collisions shows that the radiation loss term can be neglected only for rapidly-decaying or fast-growing plasmas. Emission from optically thin plasmas is considered next and an exact expression is given for the total radiation loss in a recombination continuum. A derivation of the Kramers-Unsöld approximation is presented and the error involved in estimating the total emitted recombination radiation by this approximation is shown to be small.

The role of oxide surface chemical composition and solvent on ion solvation and ion transport of ``soggy sand'' electrolytes are discussed here. A ``soggy sand'' electrolyte system comprising dispersions of hydrophilic/hydrophobic functionalized aerosil silica in lithium perchlorate methoxy polyethylene glycol solution was employed for the study. Static and dynamic rheology measurements show formation of an attractive particle network in the case of the composite with unmodified aerosil silica (i.e., with surface silanol groups) as well as composites with hydrophobic alkane groups. While particle network in the composite with hydrophilic aerosil silica (unmodified) were due to hydrogen bonding, hydrophobic aerosil silica particles were held together via van der Waals forces. The network strength in the latter case (i.e., for hydrophobic composites) were weaker compared with the composite with unmodified aerosil silica. Both unmodified silica as well as hydrophobic silica composites displayed solid-like mechanical strength. No enhancement in ionic conductivity compared to the liquid electrolyte was observed in the case of the unmodified silica. This was attributed to the existence of a very strong particle network, which led to the ``expulsion'' of all conducting entities from the interfacial region between adjacent particles. The ionic conductivity for composites with hydrophobic aerosil particles displayed ionic conductivity dependent on the size of the hydrophobic chemical moiety. No spanning attractive particle network was observed for aerosil particles with surfaces modified with stronger hydrophilic groups (than silanol). The composite resembled a sol, and no percolation in ionic conductivity was observed.

The transmission electron microscopy images of in situ prepared multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWNTs)and polyaniline (PANI) composites show that nanotubes are well dispersed in aqueous medium, and the nanofibers of PANI facilitate intertube transport. Although low temperature transport indicates variable range hopping (VRH) mechanism, the dc and ac conductivity become temperature independent as the MWNT content increases. The onset frequency for the increase in conductivity is observed to be strongly dependent on the MWNT weight percent, and the ac conductivity can be scaled onto a master curve. The negative magnetoresistance is attributed to the forward interference scattering mechanism in VRH transport. (C) 2010 American.

Two optimal non-linear reinforcement schemes—the Reward-Inaction and the Penalty-Inaction—for the two-state automaton functioning in a stationary random environment are considered. Very simple conditions of symmetry of the non-linear function figuring in the reinforcement scheme are shown to be necessary and sufficient for optimality. General expressions for the variance and rate of learning are derived. These schemes are compared with the already existing optimal linear schemes in the light of average variance and average rate of learning.

Electronic transport in the high temperature paramagnetic regime of the colossal magnetoresistive oxides, La(1-x)A(x)MnO(3), A=Ca, Sr, Ba, x similar or equal to 0.1-0.3, has been investigated using resistivity measurements. The main motivation for this work is to relook into the actual magnitude of the activation energy for transport in a number of manganites and study its variation as a function of hole doping (x), average A-site cation radius (< r(A)>), cationic disorder (sigma(2)) and strain (epsilon(zz)). We show that contrary to current practice, the description of a single activation energy in this phase is not entirely accurate. Our results clearly reveal a strong dependence of the activation energy on the hole doping as well as disorder. Comparing the results across different substituent species with different < r(A)> reveals the importance of sigma(2) as a metric to qualify any analysis based on (r(A)). (c) 2006 Elsevier Ltd. In this paper we shall study a fractional integral equation in an arbitrary Banach space X. We used the analytic semigroups theory of linear operators and the fixed point method to establish the existence and uniqueness of solutions of the given problem. We also prove the existence of global solution. The existence and convergence of the Faedo–Galerkin solution to the given problem is also proved in a separable Hilbert space with some additional assumptions on the operator A. Finally we give an example to illustrate the applications of the abstract results.

In multiwall carbon nanotube (MWNT)-polystyrene (PS) composites, a weak temperature dependence of conductivity has been observed at a percolation threshold of 0.4 wt %. The power law [sigma(T)proportional to T-0.3] behavior indicates metallic-like behavior, unlike the usual activated transport for systems near the percolation threshold. The low field positive magnetoconductance follows H-2 dependence, due to the weak localization in disordered metallic systems. The marginal metallic nature of MWNT-PS at percolation threshold is further verified from the negligible frequency dependence of conductivity, in the temperature range of 300 to 5 K. Using Thomé's procedure, the asymptotic solutions of the Frieman and Book equation for the two-particle correlation in a plasma have been obtained in a complete form. The solution is interpreted in terms of the Lorentz distance. The exact expressions for the internal energy and pressure are evaluated and they are found to be a generalization of the result obtained earlier by others.

Transport of 1-14C-IAA in successive stem segments of Cuscuta was strictly basipetal in growing and non growing regions of the vine with a flux velocity of 10-12 mm/h (intercept method). This transport showed a distinct peaked profile, increasing from a low value at 10 mm from the apex to a maximum between 50 and 90 mm before declining to a low value again around 160 mm at which elongation growth ceased. The IAA transport profile paralleled the in vivo growth rate profile, though the latter peaked ahead of transport. A better correlation was observed between the profile of growth responsiveness of the vine to exogenous IAA application and the profile of IAA transport. Growth responsiveness was determined as the differential in growth rate of stem segments in vitro in the absence and presence of growth optimal concentration of IAA (10 μm). Retention of exogenous IAA in the stem was maximal where transport decreased, and this coincided with the region of maximal conjugation of applied 1-14C-IAA to aspartic acid to form indoleacetylaspartate (IAAsp). In addition to aspartate, IAA was conjugated to a small extent to an unidentified compound. IAA destruction by decarboxylation was greatest where transport was low, particularly in the nongrowing region, where lignification occurred (i.e., beyond 180 mm). At concentrations up to 20 μM, a pulse of 1-14C-IAA chased by "cold" IAA moved as a peak (with a peak displacement velocity of 12-18 mm/h) in the "growth" region of the vine, but became diffusionlike where growth either fell off steeply or ceased. At a higher (50 μM) IAA concentration, though uptake was not saturated, transport in the growth region became diffusionlike, indicating saturation of the system. Reduced IAA flux in the region where growth responsiveness to IAA declined coincided with the region of increased IAA conjugation. However, it cannot be concluded whether increased IAA conjugation was the cause or effect of decreased IAA flux. Application of benzyladenine to the vines in vivo, a treatment that elicited haustoria formation by 72 h, resulted in the inhibition of both IAA transport and elongation growth rate in the subapical region. In vitro treatment of vine segments with BA similarly increased IAA retention and decreased IAA transport. IAA loss was suppressed, and conjugation to IAAsp was enhanced. © 1989 Springer-Verlag New York Inc.

Rapid solidification of an equiatomic In-Se alloy resulted in the formation of an equilibrium InSe-In6Se7 phase mixture. The InSe phase was found to be polytypic and exhibited the structural variants 2H, 3H, and 4H. The 4H polytype was found to be in considerably higher proportion compared to 2H and 3H types. The In6Se7 phase was found to be hexagonal with a=0.8919 nm and c=1.4273 nm. Both In6Se 7 and the polytypes of InSe could be identified with the space group P61. The conductivity σ variation with temperature was found to be similar to that observed in disordered semiconducting materials. For temperatures >200 K, ln σ decreased linearly with T-1, phonon-assisted carrier excitation. For temperatures <200 K, ln σ decrease followed T-1/3 behavior, representative of variable-range hopping conduction of electrons.

In this paper we introduce a nonlinear detector based on the phenomenon of suprathreshold stochastic resonance (SSR). We first present a model (an array of 1-bit quantizers) that demonstrates the SSR phenomenon. We then use this as a pre-processor to the conventional matched filter. We employ the Neyman-Pearson(NP) detection strategy and compare the performances of the matched filter, the SSR-based detector and the optimal detector. Although the proposed detector is non-optimal, for non-Gaussian noises with heavy tails (leptokurtic) it shows better performance than the matched filter. In situations where the noise is known to be leptokurtic without the availability of the exact knowledge of its distribution, the proposed detector turns out to be a better choice than the matched filter.
