Field induced spin reorientation transition in epitaxial La0.5Sr0.5CoO3 films

Strained epitaxial La0.5Sr0.5CoO3 films are grown on LaAlO3 substrate. Structural, electrical,and magnetic measurements were carried out. Out of plane lattice parameter of the film undergoes compressive strain and the coercivity is enhanced. The zero field cooled (ZFC) magnetization curve for a field applied parallel to the film plane shows a jump, which suggests a spin reorientation transition (SRT), while ZFC magnetization for a field applied perpendicular to the film plane is featureless. This jump in magnetization is shifted to higher temperatures when the magnetic field is reduced. The SRT is attributed to the strain in the film. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Preparation and characterization of rubidium-beta-alumina by the gel-to-crystallite conversion method

Preparation of Rb-beta -alumina was realized by the gel-to-crystallite conversion method. Reaction of hydrated aluminum hydroxide gel with RbOH in ethanol medium gave rise to the Rb+-inserted pseudoboehmite precursor under wet chemical conditions. The thermal decomposition of the precursor yielded Rb-beta -alumina. The Rb2O:Al2O3 ratio of monophasic Rb-beta -alumina ranged from 1:10 to 1:22. The extended stability in the compositional range is due to the fact that the conduction planes containing Rb+ and O2- ions can have lower occupancy of Rb+ ions for larger sized alkali ions, permitting the steric separation of the adjoining spinel blocks. High-resolution electron microscopy revealed that the decreasing occupancy of alkali ions in the conduction plane is balanced by changing widths of spinel blocks arising from the shift of tetrahedral Al3+ ions to octahedral sites and an accompanying increase in stacking defects. Preparation and characterization of silane-stabilized, highly uniform, nanobimetallic Pt-Pd particles in solid and liquid matrixes

Highly uniform, stable nanobimetallic dispersions are prepared in a single si ep in the form of sols, gels, and monoliths, using organically modified silicates as the matrix and the stabilizer. The Pt-Pd bimetallic dispersions are characterized by W-vis, TEM, SEM, and XRD measurements. The evolution of silicate was followed by IR spectroscopy. XPS and CO adsorption studies reveal that the structure of the particles consists of a palladium core and a platinum shell. Electrocatalysis of ascorbic acid oxidation has been demonstrated using thin films of silicate containing the nanobimetal particles on a glassy carbon electrode.

Enantiodiscrimination and extraction of short and long range homo- and hetero-nuclear residual dipolar couplings by a spin selective correlation experiment

A two dimensional correlation experiment for the measurement of short and long range homo- and hetero- nuclear residual dipolar couplings (RDCs) from the broad and featureless proton NMR spectra including C-13 satellites is proposed. The method employs a single natural abundant C-13 spin as a spy nucleus to probe all the coupled protons and permits the determination of RDCs of negligible strengths. The technique has been demonstrated for the study of organic chiral molecules aligned in chiral liquid crystal, where additional challenge is to unravel the overlapped spectrum of enantiomers. The significant advantage of the method is demonstrated in better chiral discrimination using homonuclear RDCs as additional parameters. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Preparation and characterization of hydrazinium derivatives

A number of simple and complex hydrazinium derivatives have been prepared by the reaction of hydrazine hydrate with ammonium salts. The products were characterized by chemical analysis and infrared spectra.

A New Method for the Preparation of Sulphuryl Chloro Fluoride

It has been observed that a suspension of sodium fluoride in boiling acetonitrile could be used for the preparation of fluorine compounds such as silicon tetrafluoride [1], thiophosphoryl fluoride [2], sulphur tetrafluoride [3,4], and fluorocyclophosphazenes [5]. This method, when adopted for the fluorination of sulphuryl chloride [6], it is observed that a mixture of sulphuryl fluoride and sulphuryl chloro fluoride is obtained. On the other hand, when lead fluoride is substituted for sodium fluoride, pure sulphuryl chloro fluoride is evolved. Based on this observation, a new method has been standardised for the preparation of a pure sample of sulphuryl chlorofluoride by fluorinating sulphuryl chloride by lead fluoride in acetonitrile medium.

First-principles analysis of electron correlation, spin ordering and phonons in the normal state of FeSe1-x

We present first-principles density-functional-theory-based calculations to determine the effects of the strength of on-site electron correlation, magnetic ordering, pressure and Se vacancies on phonon frequencies and electronic structure of FeSe1-x. The theoretical equilibrium structure (lattice parameters) of FeSe depends sensitively on the value of the Hubbard parameter U of on-site correlation and magnetic ordering. Our results suggest that there is a competition between different antiferromagnetic states due to comparable magnetic exchange couplings between first- and second-neighbor Fe sites. As a result, a short range order of stripe antiferromagnetic type is shown to be relevant to the normal state of FeSe at low temperature. We show that there is a strong spin-phonon coupling in FeSe (comparable to its superconducting transition temperature) as reflected in large changes in the frequencies of certain phonons with different magnetic ordering, which is used to explain the observed hardening of a Raman-active phonon at temperatures (similar to 100 K) where magnetic ordering sets in. The symmetry of the stripe antiferromagnetic phase permits an induced stress with orthorhombic symmetry, leading to orthorhombic strain as a secondary order parameter at the temperature of magnetic ordering. The presence of Se vacancies in FeSe gives rise to a large peak in the density of states near the Fermi energy, which could enhance the superconducting transition temperature within the BCS-like picture.

Preparation and characterization of La2CoO4+?

La2CoO4+? (? reverse similar, equals 0.1) possessing the K2NiF4 structure has been prepared by skull melting as well as the ceramic method. Evidence for antiferromagnetic ordering has been found in these samples. Stoichiometric La2CoO4 prepared by the reduction of the oxygen excess samples was partially characterized.

The 31p nmr Spectra of Isomeric Diaminohexa-hlorocyclotetraphosphazatetraenes; Examples of a2b2 and aa'bb' spin Systems

The 31P nmr spectra of 2,4- and 2,6-diamino-derivatives of octachlorocyclotetraphosphazatetraene, N4P4Cl6(NR1R2)2 (R1 = H, R2 = But; R1 = H, R2 = CH2Ph; R1 = Me, R2 = Ph), have been measured. The 2,4- and 2,6-isomers were analysed as AA'BB' and A2B2 spin systems respectively. In the 2,4-isomers the spin-spin couplings 2J(PNP) and 4J(PNPNP) were of opposite sign.

Purification of goat serum retinol-binding protein and preparation of its antibodies

The method for the purification of goat serum retinol-binding protein consists of DEAE-cellulose chromatography of the serum followed by preparative polyacrylamide disc gel electrophoresis. After electrophoresis, the retinol-binding protein containing zone is identified by the specific fluorescence of retinol. For raising the antibodies, the portion of the gel containing retinol binding protein is homogenized and injected intradermally and intramuscularly to rabbits. The availability of this simple method for the isolation of retinol-binding protein and production of its antibodies enables the development of a radioimmunoassay for this protein.

Spin and mass content of linearized Poincaré gauge theories

A unified gauge theory of massless and massive spin-2 fields is of considerable current interest. The Poincaré gauge theories with quadratic Lagrangian are linearized, and the conditions on the parameters are found which will lead to viable linear theories with massive gauge particles. As well as the 2+ massless gravitons coming from the translational gauge potential, the rotational gauge potentials, in the linearized limit, give rise to 2+ and 2− particles of equal mass, as well as a massive pseudoscalar.

The elastic manifestation of a spin-glass transition: a low-frequency study

The authors report here the first measurements of low-frequency dynamic elastic properties of a spin glass (Fe59Ni21Cr20) across the transition temperature (Tg approximately=16 K). A minimum in the sound velocity (V) and a maximum in the internal friction (Q-1) were found at temperatures close to but below Tg. The elastic data were compared with the AC susceptibility data taken at similar frequency.

Ultrafine Mn---Zn ferrites: Preparation and properties

High density Mn-Zr ferrites have been extensively used in recording head applications. The properties like permeability, los~, etc., depend on the preparation method. The :roperfies play major role in selecting these materials for various applications.In this present work., we have prepared Mn-Zn ferrites musing metal hydrazine carboxylate precursors (N2Hs)3Mn0.sZn0.sFe2(N2H3COO)3"3H20. The precursor decomposes at very low temperature (~250°C) to form ultrafine Mno.sZn0.sFe204. The partic~,e size permeability spectrum, microstructure and magnetic properties will be discussed in this paper.

Curie-temprature of a spin one xy ferromagnet with uniaxial anisotropy

A spin one XY ferromagnet with uniaxial anisotropy has been investigated, using Green's function technique in random phase approximation (RPA). The Green functions associated with the anisotropy energy are treated without decoupling. A set of coupled equations have been obtained to find the critical temperature Tc and left angle bracket(SZ)2right-pointing angle bracket at Tc as function of the uniaxial anisotropy parameter D. Tc and left angle bracket(SZ)2right-pointing angle bracket at Tc are found to increase with D. The results are compared with the earlier results obtained in the Narath type of RPA.
