Phase transformations of Al2O3 and Na2O · 6Al2O3 prepared by the gel route have been investigated for the first time by 27Al MAS NMR spectroscopy in combination with x-ray diffraction. Of particular interest in the study is the kinetics of the γ → α and γ → β transformations, respectively, in these two systems. Analysis of the kinetic data shows the important role of nucleation in both these transformations.

Molecules exhibiting a thermotropic liquid-crystalline property have acquired significant importance due to their sensitivity to external stimuli such as temperature, mechanical forces, and electric and magnetic fields. As a result, several novel mesogens have been synthesized by the introduction of various functional groups in the vicinity of the aromatic core as well as in the side chains and their properties have been studied. In the present study, we report three-ring mesogens with hydroxyl groups at one terminal. These mesogens were synthesized by a multistep route, and structural characterization was accomplished by spectral techniques. The mesophase properties were studied by hot-stage optical polarizing microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, and small-angle X-ray scattering. An enantiotropic nematic phase was noticed for lower homologues, while an additional smectic C phase was found for higher homologues. Solid-state high-resolution natural abundance (13)C NMR studies of a typical mesogen in the solid phase and in the mesophases have been carried out. The (13)C NMR spectrum of the mesogen in the smectic C and nematic phases indicated spontaneous alignment of the molecule in the magnetic field. By utilizing the two-dimensional separated local field (SLF) NMR experiment known as SAMPI4, (13)C-(1)H dipolar couplings have been obtained, which were utilized to determine the orientational order parameters of the mesogen.

The novel three-component chiral derivatization protocols have been derived for (1)H and (19)F NMR spectroscopic discrimination of a series of chiral hydroxy acids by their coordination and self-assembly with optically active a-methylbenzylamine and 2-formylphenylboronic acid. In addition, the optically pure (S)-mandelic acid in combination with 2-formylphenylboronic acid permits visualization of enantiomers of primary amines. These protocols have been demonstrated on enantiodiscrimination of chiral amines and hydroxy acids.

The present study reports a two dimensional NMR experiment which separates single quantum spectra of enantiomers from that of a racemic mixture. This is a blend of selective double quantum refocusing, for resolving couplings and chemical shift interactions along two dimensions followed by correlation of the selectively excited protons to the entire coupled spin network. The concept is solely based on the presence of distinct intra methyl dipolar couplings of different enantiomers when dissolved in chiral orienting media. The analysis of single enantiomer spectrum obtained from respective F-2 cross sections yield all the spectral information. (C) 2011 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Template-assisted formation of multicomponent Pd6 coordination prisms and formation of their self-templated triply interlocked Pd12 analogues in the absence of an external template have been established in a single step through Pd?N/Pd?O coordination. Treatment of cis-[Pd(en)(NO3)2] with K3tma and linear pillar 4,4'-bpy (en=ethylenediamine, H3tma=benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxylic acid, 4,4'-bpy=4,4'-bipyridine) gave intercalated coordination cage [{Pd(en)}6(bpy)3(tma)2]2[NO3]12 (1) exclusively, whereas the same reaction in the presence of H3tma as an aromatic guest gave a H3tma-encapsulating non-interlocked discrete Pd6 molecular prism [{Pd(en)}6(bpy)3(tma)2(H3tma)2][NO3]6 (2). Though the same reaction using cis-[Pd(NO3)2(pn)] (pn=propane-1,2-diamine) instead of cis-[Pd(en)(NO3)2] gave triply interlocked coordination cage [{Pd(pn)}6(bpy)3(tma)2]2[NO3]12 (3) along with non-interlocked Pd6 analogue [{Pd(pn)}6(bpy)3(tma)2](NO3)6 (3'), and the presence of H3tma as a guest gave H3tma-encapsulating molecular prism [{Pd(pn)}6(bpy)3(tma)2(H3tma)2][NO3]6 (4) exclusively. In solution, the amount of 3' decreases as the temperature is decreased, and in the solid state 3 is the sole product. Notably, an analogous reaction using the relatively short pillar pz (pz=pyrazine) instead of 4,4'-bpy gave triply interlocked coordination cage [{Pd(pn)}6(pz)3(tma)2]2[NO3]12 (5) as the single product. Interestingly, the same reaction using slightly more bulky cis-[Pd(NO3)2(tmen)] (tmen=N,N,N',N'-tetramethylethylene diamine) instead of cis-[Pd(NO3)2(pn)] gave non-interlocked [{Pd(tmen)}6(pz)3(tma)2][NO3]6 (6) exclusively. Complexes 1, 3, and 5 represent the first examples of template-free triply interlocked molecular prisms obtained through multicomponent self-assembly. Formation of the complexes was supported by IR and multinuclear NMR (1H and 13C) spectroscopy. Formation of guest-encapsulating complexes (2 and 4) was confirmed by 2D DOSY and ROESY NMR spectroscopic analyses, whereas for complexes 1, 3, 5, and 6 single-crystal X-ray diffraction techniques unambiguously confirmed their formation. The gross geometries of H3tma-encapsulating complexes 2 and 4 were obtained by universal force field (UFF) simulations.

Benzene carboxylic acids and Benzamide act as their self-complement in molecular recognition to form inter-molecular hydrogen bonded dimers between amide and carboxylic acid groups, which have been investigated by H-1, C-13 and N-15 NMR spectroscopy. Extensive NMR studies using diffusion ordered spectroscopy (DOSY), variable temperature 1D, 2D NMR, established the formation of heterodimers of benzamide with benzoic acid, salicylic acid and phenyl acetic acid in deuterated chloroform solution. Association constants for the complex formation in the solution state have been determined. The results are ascertained by X-ray diffraction in the solid state. Intermolecular interactions in solution and in solid state were found to be similar. The structural parameters obtained by X-ray diffraction studies are compared with those obtained by DFT calculations. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

NMR spectroscopic chiral visualization, unambiguous assignment of peaks pertaining to R and S enantiomers and the subsequent measurement of enantiomeric composition demands a highly resolved spectrum. The method fails when the spectrum is severely overcrowded or highly complex, thereby hampering the determination of enantiomeric excess. In order to circumvent such problems we propose the utility of pure shift spectrum obtained by resolving the chemical shift and coupling information in two orthogonal dimensions. The skew projected spectrum yields singlet's at the respective chemical shift positions, permitting the unravelling of the superimposed spectral transitions for each enantiomer and measurement of enantiomeric composition. There has been growing interest in understanding energy metabolism in human embryos generated using assisted reproductive techniques (ART) for improving the overall success rate of the method. Using NMR spectroscopy as a noninvasive tool, we studied human embryo metabolism to identify specific biomarkers to assess the quality of embryos for their implantation potential. The study was based on estimation of pyruvate, lactate and alanine levels in the growth medium, ISM1, used in the culture of embryos. An NMR study involving 127 embryos from 48 couples revealed that embryos transferred on Day 3 (after 72 h in vitro culture) with successful implantation (pregnancy) exhibited significantly (p < 10(-5)) lower pyruvate/alanine ratios compared to those that failed to implant. Lactate levels in media were similar for all embryos. This implies that in addition to lactate production, successfully implanted embryos use pyruvate to produce alanine and other cellular functions. While pyruvate and alanine individually have been used as biomarkers, the present study highlights the potential of combining them to provide a single parameter that correlates strongly with implantation potential. The H-1 NMR spectroscopic discrimination of enantiomers in the solution state and the measurement of enantiomeric composition is most often hindered due to either very small chemical shift differences between the discriminated peaks or severe overlap of transitions from other chemically non-equivalent protons. In addition the use of chiral auxiliaries such as, crown ether and chiral lanthanide shift reagent may often cause enormous line broadening or give little degree of discrimination beyond the crown ether substrate ratio, hampering the discrimination. In circumventing such problems we are proposing the utilization of the difference in the additive values of all the chemical shifts of a scalar coupled spin system. The excitation and detection of appropriate highest quantum coherence yields the measurable difference in the frequencies between two transitions, one pertaining to each enantiomer in the maximum quantum dimension permitting their discrimination and the F-2 cross section at each of these frequencies yields an enantiopure spectrum. The advantage of the utility of the proposed method is demonstrated on several chiral compounds where the conventional one dimensional H-1 NMR spectra fail to differentiate the enantiomers.

Diffusion of pentane isomers in zeolites NaX has been investigated using pulsed field gradient nuclear magnetic resonance (PFG-NMR) and molecular dynamics (MD) techniques respectively. Temperature and concentration dependence of diffusivities have been studied. The diffusivities obtained from NMR are roughly an order of magnitude smaller than those obtained from MD. The dependence of diffusivity on loading at high temperatures exhibits a type I behavior according to the classification of Karger and Pfeifer 1]. NMR diffusivities of the isomers exhibit the order D(n-pentane) > D(isopentane) > D(neopentane). The results from MD suggest that the diffusivities of the isomers follow the order D(n-pentane) < D(isopentane) < D(neopentane). The activation energies from NMR show E-a(n-pentane) < E-a(isopentane) < E-a(neopentane) whereas those from MD suggest the order E-a(n-pentane) > (isopentane) > E-a(neopentane). The latter follows the predictions of levitation effect whereas those of NMR appears to be due to the presence of defects in the zeolite crystals. The differences between diffusivities estimated by NMR and MD are attributed to the longer time and length scales sampled by the NMR technique, as compared to MD. (C) 2012 Elsevier Inc. We report the in situ and real-time monitoring of the interconversion of L- and D-alanine-d(3) by alanine racemase from Bacillus stearothermophilus directly observed by H-2 NMR spectroscopy in anisotropic phase. The enantiomers are distinguished by the difference of their H-2 quadrupolar splittings in a chiral liquid crystal containing short DNA fragments. The proof-of-principle, the reliability, and the robustness of this new method is demonstrated by the determination of the turnover rates of the enzyme using the Michaelis Menten model.

An in situ approach involving a simple mix and shake method for testing the enantiopurity of primary, secondary and tertiary chiral amines and their derivatives, chiral amino alcohols, by H-1-NMR spectroscopy is developed. The protocol involves the in situ formation of chiral ammonium borate salt from a mixture of C-2 symmetric chiral BINOL, trialkoxyborane and chiral amines. The proposed concept was demonstrated convincingly on a large number of chiral and pro-chiral amines and amino alcohols, and also aids the precise measurement of enantiomeric excess. The protocol can be completed in a couple of minutes directly in the NMR sample tube, without the need for any physical separation.

Three-component chiral derivatization protocols are proposed for the assignment of the absolute configurations of chiral primary amines and chiral hydroxy acids using H-1-NMR. The protocols involve simple mixing of the ternary components in CDCl3, followed by stirring for 15 min. The spectra can be recorded directly, without invoking any separation method, unlike many other chiral derivatizing agents. The protocols permit the analysis in less than 15 min, making them convenient and effective for the assignment of the absolute configurations of primary amines and hydroxy acids.
