This article presents a review of recent developments in parametric based acoustic emission (AE) techniques applied to concrete structures. It recapitulates the significant milestones achieved by previous researchers including various methods and models developed in AE testing of concrete structures. The aim is to provide an overview of the specific features of parametric based AE techniques of concrete structures carried out over the years. Emphasis is given to traditional parameter-based AE techniques applied to concrete structures. A significant amount of research on AE techniques applied to concrete structures has already been published and considerable attention has been given to those publications. Some recent studies such as AE energy analysis and b-value analysis used to assess damage of concrete bridge beams have also been discussed. The formation of fracture process zone and the AE energy released during the fracture process in concrete beam specimens have been summarised. A large body of experimental data on AE characteristics of concrete has accumulated over the last three decades. This review of parametric based AE techniques applied to concrete structures may be helpful to the concerned researchers and engineers to better understand the failure mechanism of concrete and evolve more useful methods and approaches for diagnostic inspection of structural elements and failure prediction/prevention of concrete structures.

Acoustic emission (AE) testing is a well-known method for damage identification of various concrete structures including bridges. This article presents a method to assess damage in reinforced concrete (RC) bridge beams subjected to incremental cyclic loading. The specifications in the standard NDIS-2421 were used to classify the damage in RC bridge beams. Earlier researchers classified the damage occurring in bridge beams by using crack mouth opening displacement (CMOD) and AE released and proposed a standard (NDIS-2421: the Japanese Society for NonDestructive Inspection). In general, multiple cracks take place in RC beams under bending; therefore, utilisation of CMOD for crack detection may not be appropriate. In the present study, the damage in RC beams is classified by using the AE released, deflection, strains in steel and concrete, because the measurement of the strains in steel and concrete is easy and the codes of practice are specified for different limit states (IS-456:2000). The observations made in the present experimental study have some important practical applications in assessing the state of damage of concrete structural members.

Notched three point bend (TPB) specimens made with plain concrete and cement mortar were tested under crack mouth opening displacement (CMOD) control at a rate of 0.0004 mm/s and simultaneously acoustic emissions (AE) released were recorded during the experiments. Amplitude distribution analysis of AE released during concrete was carried out to study the development of fracture process in concrete and mortar specimens. The slope of the log-linear frequency-amplitude distribution of AE is known as the AE based b-value. The AE based b-value was computed in terms of physical process of time varying applied load using cumulative frequency distribution (Gutenberg-Richter relationship) and discrete frequency distribution (Aki's method) of AE released during concrete fracture. AE characteristics of plain concrete and cement mortar were studied and discussed and it was observed that the AE based b-value analysis serves as a tool to identify the damage in concrete structural members. The magnetorotational instability (MRI) is a crucial mechanism of angular momentum transport in a variety of astrophysical accretion disks. In systems accreting at well below the Eddington rate, such as the central black hole in the Milky Way (Sgr A*), the plasma in the disk is essentially collisionless. We present a nonlinear study of the collisionless MRI using first-principles particle-in-cell plasma simulations. We focus on local two-dimensional (axisymmetric) simulations, deferring more realistic three-dimensional simulations to future work. For simulations with net vertical magnetic flux, the MRI continuously amplifies the magnetic field, B, until the Alfven velocity, v(A), is comparable to the speed of light, c (independent of the initial value of v(A)/c). This is consistent with the lack of saturation of MRI channel modes in analogous axisymmetric MHD simulations. The amplification of the magnetic field by the MRI generates a significant pressure anisotropy in the plasma (with the pressure perpendicular to B being larger than the parallel pressure). We find that this pressure anisotropy in turn excites mirror modes and that the volume-averaged pressure anisotropy remains near the threshold for mirror mode excitation. Particle energization is due to both reconnection and viscous heating associated with the pressure anisotropy. Reconnection produces a distinctive power-law component in the energy distribution function of the particles, indicating the likelihood of non-thermal ion and electron acceleration in collisionless accretion disks. This has important implications for interpreting the observed emission-from the radio to the gamma-rays-of systems such as Sgr A*.

In this work the field emission studies of a new type of field emitter, zinc oxide (ZnO) core/graphitic (g-C) shell nanowires are presented. The nanowires are synthesized by chemical vapor deposition of zinc acetate at 1300 degrees C Scanning and transmission electron microscopy characterization confirm high aspect ratio and novel core-shell morphology of the nanowires. Raman spectrum of the nanowires mat represents the characteristic Raman modes from g-C shell as well as from the ZnO core. A low turn on field of 2.75 V/mu m and a high current density of 1.0 mA/cm(2) at 4.5 V/mu m for ZnO/g-C nanowires ensure the superior field emission behavior compared to the bare ZnO nanowires. The three indicators of isentropic lines, namely, the isentropic index, the ratio of pressure and density p/rho and the derivative (partial derivative p/partial derivative rho)s are investigated for all of the fluids in the RefProp 9.0 program. The behaviour of these three entities is evaluated along the saturated vapour line as well as in the superheated vapour region. There is a distinct demarcation of fluids whose isentropic indices can be less than 1 and others for which this behaviour is absent. The critical molar volume is found to be the characterizing feature. Several other interesting features of those three thermodynamic properties are also highlighted. It is observed that most practical engineering compression and expansion processes occur along the decreasing direction of the sound speed.

The components of EHV/UHV lines and substations can produce significant corona. To limit the consequent Radio Interference and Audible Noise on these systems, suitable corona control rings are employed. The shapes of these rings could vary from circular to rectangular with smooth bends. Many manufacturers seem to adopt trial and error method for arriving at the final design. As such neither the present testing standard nor the final design adopted consider the practical scenario like corona produced by deposition of dirt, bird droppings, etc. The present work aims to make a first step in addressing this practically important problem. This requires an accurate evaluation of the electric field and a reliable method for the evaluation of corona inception. Based on a thorough survey of pertinent literature, the critical avalanche criteria as applicable to large electrodes, has been adopted. Taking the rain drop on the surface as the biggest protrusion, conducting protrusions modeled as semi-ellipsoid is considered as representative for deposition of dust or the boundary of bird droppings etc. Through examples of 4 00 kV and 765 kV class toroidal corona rings, the proposed method is demonstrated. This work is believed to be useful to corona ring manufacturers for EHV/UHV systems.

The synthesis, hydrogelation, and aggregation-induced emission switching of the phenylenedivinylene bis-N-octyl pyridinium salt is described. Hydrogelation occurs as a consequence of pi-stacking, van der Waals, and electrostatic interactions that lead to a high gel melting temperature and significant mechanical properties at a very low weight percentage of the gelator. A morphology transition from fiber-to-coil-to-tube was observed depending on the concentration of the gelator. Variation in the added salt type, salt concentrations, or temperature profoundly influenced the order of aggregation of the gelator molecules in aqueous solution. Formation of a novel chromophore assembly in this way leads to an aggregation-induced switch of the emission colors. The emission color switches from sky blue to white to orange depending upon the extent of aggregation through mere addition of external inorganic salts. Remarkably, the salt effect on the assembly of such cationic phenylenedivinylenes in water follow the behavior predicted from the well-known Hofmeister effects. Mechanistic insights for these aggregation processes were obtained through the counterion exchange studies. The aggregation-induced emission switching that leads to a room-temperature white-light emission from a single chromophore in a single solvent (water) is highly promising for optoelectronic applications.

We report the design and development of a self-contained multi-band receiver (MBR) system, intended for use with a single large aperture to facilitate sensitive and high time-resolution observations simultaneously in 10 discrete frequency bands sampling a wide spectral span (100-1500 MHz) in a nearly log-periodic fashion. The development of this system was primarily motivated by need for tomographic studies of pulsar polar emission regions. Although the system design is optimized for the primary goal, it is also suited for several other interesting astronomical investigations. The system consists of a dual-polarization multi-band feed (with discrete responses corresponding to the 10 bands pre-selected as relatively radio frequency interference free), a common wide-band radio frequency front-end, and independent back-end receiver chains for the 10 individual sub-bands. The raw voltage time sequences corresponding to 16 MHz bandwidth each for the two linear polarization channels and the 10 bands are recorded at the Nyquist rate simultaneously. We present the preliminary results from the tests and pulsar observations carried out with the Robert C. Byrd Green Bank Telescope using this receiver. The system performance implied by these results and possible improvements are also briefly discussed.

Field emission of reduced graphene oxide coated on polystyrene film is studied in both parallel and perpendicular configurations. Low turn-on field of 0.6 V/lm and high emission current density of 200 mA/cm(2) are observed in perpendicular configuration (along the cross section), whereas a turn-on field of 6 V/lm and current density of 20 mu A/cm(2) are obtained in parallel configuration (top surface). The emission characteristics follow Fowler-Nordheim (FN) tunneling and the values of enhancement factor estimated from FN plots are 5818 (perpendicular) and 741 (parallel). Furthermore, stability and repeatability of the field emission characteristics in perpendicular configuration are presented. We consider precoding strategies at the secondary base station (SBS) in a cognitive radio network with interference constraints at the primary users (PUs). Precoding strategies at the SBS which satisfy interference constraints at the PUs in cognitive radio networks have not been adequately addressed in the literature so far. In this paper, we consider two scenarios: i) when the primary base station (PBS) data is not available at SBS, and ii) when the PBS data is made available at the SBS. We derive the optimum MMSE and Tomlinson-Harashima precoding (THP) matrix Alters at the SBS which satisfy the interference constraints at the PUs for the former case. For the latter case, we propose a precoding scheme at the SBS which performs pre-cancellation of the PBS data, followed by THP on the pre-cancelled data. The optimum precoding matrix filters are computed through an iterative search. To illustrate the robustness of the proposed approach against imperfect CSI at the SBS, we then derive robust precoding filters under imperfect CSI for the latter case. Simulation results show that the proposed optimum precoders achieve good bit error performance at the secondary users while meeting the interference constraints at the PUs.

This paper considers cooperative spectrum sensing in Cognitive Radios. In our previous work we have developed DualSPRT, a distributed algorithm for cooperative spectrum sensing using Sequential Probability Ratio Test (SPRT) at the Cognitive Radios as well as at the fusion center. This algorithm works well, but is not optimal. In this paper we propose an improved algorithm- SPRT-CSPRT, which is motivated from Cumulative Sum Procedures (CUSUM). We analyse it theoretically. We also modify this algorithm to handle uncertainties in SNR's and fading.

In this paper we present the various design issues related to CRLH-Transmission lines for the generation of short duration Ultra-Wideband chirped-pulse. The major parameters of the CRLH Transmission lines affecting the BandWidth are discussed and methods to increase BandWidth are also suggested. Also presented is the role of components of CRLH Transmission lines in determining the chirp duration. The techniques of controlling the chirp duration by regulating these components are also discussed. Simulations results are also included.

We study the performance of cognitive (secondary) users in a cognitive radio network which uses a channel whenever the primary users are not using the channel. The usage of the channel by the primary users is modelled by an ON-OFF renewal process. The cognitive users may be transmitting data using TCP connections and voice traffic. The voice traffic is given priority over the data traffic. We theoretically compute the mean delay of TCP and voice packets and also the mean throughput of the different TCP connections. We compare the theoretical results with simulations.

This paper presents comparative evaluation of the distance relay characteristics for UHV and EHV transmission lines. Distance protection relay characteristics for the EHV and UHV systems are developed using Electromagnetic Transients (EMT) program. The variation of ideal trip boundaries for both the systems are presented. Unlike the conventional distance protection relay which uses a lumped parameter model, this paper uses the distributed parameter model. The effect of larger shunt susceptance on the trip boundaries is highlighted. Performance of distance relay with ideal trip boundaries for EHV and UHV lines have been tested for various fault locations and fault resistances. Electromagnetic Transients (EMT) program has been developed considering distributed parameter line model for simulating the test systems. The voltage and current phasors are computed from the signals using an improved full cycle DFT algorithm taking 20 samples per cycle. Two practical transmission systems of Indian power grid, namely 765 kV UHV transmission line and SREB 24-bus 400kV EHV system are used to test the performance of the proposed approach.
