We develop iterative diffraction tomography algorithms, which are similar to the distorted Born algorithms, for inverting scattered intensity data. Within the Born approximation, the unknown scattered field is expressed as a multiplicative perturbation to the incident field. With this, the forward equation becomes stable, which helps us compute nearly oscillation-free solutions that have immediate bearing on the accuracy of the Jacobian computed for use in a deterministic Gauss-Newton (GN) reconstruction. However, since the data are inherently noisy and the sensitivity of measurement to refractive index away from the detectors is poor, we report a derivative-free evolutionary stochastic scheme, providing strictly additive updates in order to bridge the measurement-prediction misfit, to arrive at the refractive index distribution from intensity transport data. The superiority of the stochastic algorithm over the GN scheme for similar settings is demonstrated by the reconstruction of the refractive index profile from simulated and experimentally acquired intensity data. We study the onset of the neutron drip in high-density matter in the presence of a magnetic field. It has been found that, for systems having only protons and electrons, in the presence of a magnetic field greater than or similar to 10(15) G, neutronization occurs at a density that is at least an order of magnitude higher compared to that in a nonmagnetic system. In a system with heavier ions, the effect of the magnetic field, however, starts arising at a much higher field, greater than or similar to 10(17) G. These results may have important implications for high-magnetic-field neutron stars and white dwarfs and, in general, in nuclear astrophysics when the system is embedded within a strong magnetic field.

The effect of Zr, Hf, and Sn in BaTiO3 has been investigated at close composition intervals in the dilute concentration limit. Detailed structural analysis by x-ray and neutron powder diffraction revealed that merely 2mol. % of Zr, Sn, and Hf stabilizes a coexistence of orthorhombic (Amm2) and tetragonal (P4mm) phases at room temperature. As a consequence, all the three systems show substantial enhancement in the longitudinal piezoelectric coefficient (d(33)), with Sn modification exhibiting the highest value similar to 425 pC/N. The(1-x) BiFeO3-(x) PbTiO3 solid solution exhibiting a Morphotropic Phase Boundary (MPB) has attracted considerable attention recently because of its unique features such as multiferroic, high Curie point (T-C similar to 700 degrees C) and giant tetragonality (c/a -1 similar to 0.19). Different research groups have reported different composition range of MPB for this system. In this work we have conclusively proved that the wide composition range of MPB reported in the literature is due to kinetic arrest of the metastable rhombohedral phase and that if sufficient temperature and time is allowed the metastable phase disappears. The genuine MPB was found to be x=0.27 for which the tetragonal and the rhombohedral phases are in thermodynamic equilibrium. In-situ high temperature structural study of x=0.27 revealed the sluggish kinetics associated with the temperature induced structural transformation. Neutron powder diffraction study revealed that themagnetic ordering at room temperature occurs in the rhombohedral phase. The magnetic structure was found to be commensurate G-type antiferromagnetic with magnetic moments parallel to the c-direction (of the hexagonal cell). The present study suggests that the equilibrium properties in this solid solution series should be sought for x=0.27.

The nature of the stress and electric field driven structural and microstructural transformations in the morphotropic phase boundary (MPB) compositions of the high Curie point piezoelectric system BiScO3-PbTiO3 has been examined by ex situ based techniques. Using a powder poling technique, which is based on the concept of exploiting the irreversible structural change that occurs after the application of a strong electric field and stress independently, it was possible to ascertain that both moderate stress and electric field induce identical structural transformation-a fraction of the monoclinic phase transforms irreversibly to the tetragonal phase. Moreover, analysis of the dielectric response before and after poling revealed a counterintuitive phenomenon of poling induced decrease in the spatial coherence of polarization for compositions around the MPB and not so for compositions far away from the MPB range. Exploiting the greater sensitivity of this technique, we demonstrate that the criticality associated with the interferroelectric transition spans a wider composition range than what is conventionally reported in the literature based on bulk x-ray/neutron powder diffraction techniques.

We demonstrate a new technique to generate multiple light-sheets for fluorescence microscopy. This is possible by illuminating the cylindrical lens using multiple copies of Gaussian beams. A diffraction grating placed just before the cylindrical lens splits the incident Gaussian beam into multiple beams traveling at different angles. Subsequently, this gives rise to diffraction-limited light-sheets after the Gaussian beams pass through the combined cylindrical lens-objective sub-system. Direct measurement of field at and around the focus of objective lens shows multi-sheet pattern with an average thickness of 7.5 mu m and inter-sheet separation of 380 mu m. Employing an independent orthogonal detection sub-system, we successfully imaged fluorescently-coated yeast cells (approximate to 4 mu m) encaged in agarose gel-matrix. Such a diffraction-limited sheet-pattern equipped with dedicated detection system may find immediate applications in the field of optical microscopy and fluorescence imaging. We report structural, magnetic, and dielectric properties of the perovskite compound Pr1-xYxMnO3 (0.1 <= x <= 0.4) studied using dc magnetization, ac susceptibility, neutron powder diffraction, and dielectric techniques. These compounds crystallize in orthorhombic space group (Pnma) in the temperature range 5-300 K. The Mn-O-Mn bond angle decreases with the Y substitution along with an increase in the Jahn-Teller distortion. The Jahn-Teller distortion for Pr0.9Y0.1MnO3 shows an anomalous change near 50 K, below which it falls sharply. Neutron powder diffraction patterns of all reported compositions at low temperature constitute additional magnetic Bragg peaks that suggest magnetic ordering. Magnetic reflections were indexed in the nuclear lattice with the propagation vector k = (0, 0, 0). Rietveld refinement of powder patterns conform to A type antiferromagnetic ordering where moments are aligned ferromagnetically in a-c plane and coupled nearly antiferromagnetically along b-axis resulting in a net ferromagnetic component along the b-direction. The antiferromagnetic transition temperature was deduced from dc magnetization and ac susceptibility data. The transition temperature decreases by nearly 22 K (from 81 K to 59 K) as yttrium content (x) increases from 0.1 to 0.4. Measurements reveal strong frequency dispersion in dielectric constant and dielectric loss. Activation energy and relaxation time are estimated from the Arrhenius plot. It is further shown that relaxation behaviour is altered with yttrium doping concentration. (C) 2015 AIP Publishing LLC.

An online computing server, Online_DPI (where DPI denotes the diffraction precision index), has been created to calculate the `Cruickshank DPI' value for a given three-dimensional protein or macromolecular structure. It also estimates the atomic coordinate error for all the atoms available in the structure. It is an easy-to-use web server that enables users to visualize the computed values dynamically on the client machine. Users can provide the Protein Data Bank (PDB) identification code or upload the three-dimensional atomic coordinates from the client machine. The computed DPI value for the structure and the atomic coordinate errors for all the atoms are included in the revised PDB file. Further, users can graphically view the atomic coordinate error along with `temperature factors' (i.e. atomic displacement parameters). In addition, the computing engine is interfaced with an up-to-date local copy of the Protein Data Bank. New entries are updated every week, and thus users can access all the structures available in the Protein Data Bank. The computing engine is freely accessible online at http://cluster.physics.iisc.ernet.in/dpi/.

Magnesium aluminate spinel (MgAl2O4) forms an interesting system having tetrahedral and octahedral voids filled with near similar sized divalent Mg2+ and trivalent Al3+ cations. Structural disorder (e.g., Mg-Al antisite defects) can be tuned by synthetic conditions. This study reports the evolution of Mg/Al disorder in MgAl2O4 prepared by combustion synthesis using different types of fuels. The effect of nature of fuel and the final calcination temperature (600 degrees C-900 degrees C for 9h) on degree of cation ordering has been investigated combining powder X-ray (XRD) and neutron (NPD) diffraction. The results indicate very high degree of inversion in the samples crystallized at low annealing temperature, which on further annealing reduces toward the thermodynamically stable values. Raman spectroscopy, probing MgO4, and AlO4 tetrahedral bonds, confirmed the results at a local level.

Mesophase organization of molecules built with thiophene at the center and linked via flexible spacers to rigid side arm core units and terminal alkoxy chains has been investigated. Thirty homologues realized by varying the span of the spacers as well as the length of the terminal chains have been studied. In addition to the enantiotropic nematic phase observed for all the mesogens, the increase of the spacer as well as the terminal chain lengths resulted in the smectic C phase. The molecular organization in the smectic phase as investigated by temperature dependent X-ray diffraction measurements revealed an interesting behavior that depended on the length of the spacer vis-a-vis the length of the terminal chain. Thus, a tilted interdigitated partial bilayer organization was observed for molecules with a shorter spacer length, while a tilted monolayer arrangement was observed for those with a longer spacer length. High-resolution solid state C-13 NMR studies carried out for representative mesogens indicated a U-shape for all the molecules, indicating that intermolecular interactions and molecular dynamics rather than molecular shape are responsible for the observed behavior. Models for the mesophase organization have been considered and the results understood in terms of segregation of incompatible parts of the mesogens combined with steric frustration leading to the observed lamellar order.

The double perovskite Y2NiMnO6 displays ferromagnetic transition at T-c approximate to 81 K. The ferromagnetic order at low temperature is confirmed by the saturation value of magnetization (Ms) and also validated by the refined ordered magnetic moment values extracted from neutron powder diffraction data at 10 K. This way, the dominant Mn4+ and Ni2+ cationic ordering is confirmed. The cation-ordered P2(1)/n nuclear structure is revealed by neutron powder diffraction studies at 300 and 10 K. Analysis of the frequency-dependent dielectric constant and equivalent circuit analysis of impedance data take into account the bulk contribution to the total dielectric constant. This reveals an anomaly which coincides with the ferromagnetic transition temperature (T-c). Pyrocurrent measurements register a current flow with onset near T-c and a peak at 57 K that shifts with temperature ramp rate. The extrinsic nature of the observed pyrocurrent is established by employing a special protocol measurement. It is realized that the origin is due to reorientation of electric dipoles created by the free charge carriers and not by spontaneous electric polarization at variance with recently reported magnetism-driven ferroelectricity in this material.

We have designed and constructed a spin polarized low energy electron diffraction system working in the reflected electron pulse counting mode. This system is capable of measuring asymmetries due to spin-orbit and exchange interactions. Photoemission from a strained GaAs/GaAsP super lattice is used as the source of spin polarized electrons. Spin-orbit asymmetry is evaluated for Ir(100) single crystal at various energies. Subsequently, exchange asymmetry has been evaluated on 40 monolayer Fe deposited on Ir(100). This instrument proves to be useful in understanding structure and magnetism at surfaces. (C) 2016 AIP Publishing LLC.

Na0.5Bi0.5TiO3- based lead-free piezoelectrics exhibiting giant piezostrain are technologically interesting materials for actuator applications. The lack of clarity with regard to the structure of the nonpolar phase of this system has hindered the understanding of the structural mechanism associated with the giant piezostrain and other related phenomena. In this paper, we have investigated the structure and field-induced phase transformation behavior of a model system (0.94 - x) Na0.5Bi0.5TiO3-0.06BaTiO(3)-xK(0.5)Na(0.5)NbO(3) (0.0 <= x <= 0.025). A detailed structural analysis using neutron powder diffraction revealed that the nonpolar phase is neither cubic nor a mixture of rhombohedral (R3c) and tetragonal (P4bm) phases as commonly reported in literature but exhibits a long-period modulated structure, which is most probably of the type root 2 x root 2 x n with n = 16. Our results suggest that the giant piezoelectric strain is associated with a field-induced phase transformation of the long-period modulated structure to rhombohedral R3c structure above a critical field. We also demonstrate that the giant piezostrain is lost if the system retains a fraction of the field-induced R3c phase. A possible correlation among depolarization temperature, giant piezostrain, and its electrical fatigue behavior has also been indicated.
