Differential mobility analyzers (DMAs) are commonly used to generate monodisperse nanoparticle aerosols. Commercial DMAs operate at quasi-atmospheric pressures and are therefore not designed to be vacuum-tight. In certain particle synthesis methods, the use of a vacuum-compatible DMA is a requirement as a process step for producing high-purity metallic particles. A vacuum-tight radial DMA (RDMA) has been developed and tested at low pressures. Its performance has been evaluated by using a commercial NANO-DMA as the reference. The performance of this low-pressure RDMA (LP-RDMA) in terms of the width of its transfer function is found to be comparable with that of other NANO-DMAs at atmospheric pressure and is almost independent of the pressure down to 30 mbar. It is shown that LP-RDMA can be used for the classification of nanometer-sized particles (5-20 nm) under low pressure condition (30 mbar) and has been successfully applied to nanoparticles produced by ablating FeNi at low pressures.

Low-density nanostructured foams are often limited in applications due to their low mechanical and thermal stabilities. Here we report an approach of building the structural units of three-dimensional (3D) foams using hybrid two-dimensional (2D) atomic layers made of stacked graphene oxide layers reinforced with conformal hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) platelets. The ultra-low density (1/400 times density of graphite) 3D porous structures are scalably synthesized using solution processing method. A layered 3D foam structure forms due to presence of h-BN and significant improvements in the mechanical properties are observed for the hybrid foam structures, over a range of temperatures, compared with pristine graphene oxide or reduced graphene oxide foams. It is found that domains of h-BN layers on the graphene oxide framework help to reinforce the 2D structural units, providing the observed improvement in mechanical integrity of the 3D foam structure.

A simple and scalable method of decorating 3D-carbon nanotube (CNT) forest with metal particles has been developed. The results observed in aluminum (AI) decorated CNTs and copper (Cu) decorated CNTs on silicon (Si) and Inconel are compared with undecorated samples. A significant improvement in the field emission characteristics of the cold cathode was observed with ultralow turn on voltage (E-to similar to 0.1 V/mu m) due to decoration of CNTs with metal nanoparticles. Contact resistance between the CNTs and the substrate has also been reduced to a large extent, allowing us to get stable emission for longer duration without any current degradation, thereby providing a possibility of their use in vacuum microelectronic devices.

Density reduction of automotive steels is needed to reduce fuel consumption, thereby reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Aluminum addition has been found to be effective in making steels lighter. Such an addition does not change the crystal structure of the material. Steels modified with aluminum possess higher strength with very little compromise in ductility. In this work, different compositions of Fe-Al systems have been studied so that the desired properties of the material remain within the limit. A density reduction of approximately 10% has been achieved. The specific strength of optimal Fe-Al alloys is higher than conventional steels such as ultra-low-carbon steels.

The evolution of deformation texture in a Ni-60Co alloy with low stacking fault energy and a grain size in the nanometre range has been investigated. The analyses of texture and microstructure suggest different mechanisms of deformation in nanocrystalline as compared to microcrystalline Ni-60Co alloy. In nanocrystalline material, the mechanism responsible for texture formation has been identified as partial slip, whereas in microcrystalline material, a characteristic texture forms due to twinning and shear banding.

Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) pose a high risk of exposure to the natural environment owing to their extensive usage in various consumer products. In the present study we attempted to understand the harmful effect of AgNPs at environmentally relevant low concentration levels (<= 1 ppm) towards two different freshwater bacterial isolates and their consortium. The standard plate count assay suggested that the AgNPs were toxic towards the fresh water bacterial isolates as well as the consortium, though toxicity was significantly reduced for the cells in the consortium. The oxidative stress assessment and membrane permeability studies corroborated with the toxicity data. The detailed electron microscopic studies suggested the cell degrading potential of the AgNPs, and the FT-IR studies confirmed the involvement of the surface groups in the toxic effects. No significant ion leaching from the AgNPs was observed at the applied concentration levels signifying the dominant role of the particle size, and size distribution in bacterial toxicity. The reduced toxicity for the cells in the consortium than the individual isolates has major significance in further studies on the ecotoxicity of the AgNPs. (C) 2014 Elsevier Inc. Two new low band gap D-A structured conjugated polymers, PBDTTBI and PBDTBBT, based on 2-(4-(trifluoromethyl)phenyl)-1H-benzod]imidazole and benzo1,2-c; 4,5-c']bis1,2,5]thiadiazole acceptor units with benzo1,2-b; 3,4-b']dithiophene as a donor unit have been designed and synthesized via a Stille coupling reaction. The incorporation of the benzo1,2-c; 4,5-c']bis1,2,5]thiadiazole unit into PBDTBBT has significantly altered the optical and electrochemical properties of the polymer. The optical band gap estimated from the onset absorption edge is similar to 1.88 eV and similar to 1.1 eV, respectively for PBDTTBI and PBDTBBT. It is observed that PBDTBBT exhibited a deeper HOMO energy level (similar to 4.06 eV) with strong intramolecular charge transfer interactions. Bulk heterojunction solar cells fabricated with a configuration of ITO/PEDOT: PSS/PBDTBBT: PC71BM/Al exhibited a best power conversion efficiency of 0.67%, with a short circuit current density of 4.9 mA cm(-2), an open-circuit voltage of 0.54 V and a fill factor of 25%.

A sound weld was obtained between 2024-T3 Al alloy and AZ31B-O Mg alloy dissimilar metal plates of 5 mm thickness, at a rotational speed of 300 rev min(-1) and at a welding speed of 50 mm min(-1). One of the parameter studied was, the effect of interface offset variation, on the quality and properties of the welded samples and on the thickness of intermetallic layer formed in the welded samples. The intermetallic layer at the midst of the weld volume contains intermetallic compounds Al12Mg17 and Al3Mg2. Highest tensile strength of 106.86 MPa, corresponding tensile joint efficiency of 44.52% and corresponding elongation 1.33% were obtained for the tensile sample, with interface offset of 0.66 mm from zero interface offset in retreating side and with approximate least intermetallic thickness of 1.2 mu m. Dissimilar friction stir welded joint samples had failed completely in brittle fracture mode; the position of tensile fracture was located at the midst of intermetallic layer, which had maximum hardness and minimum ductility. The nano hardness values fluctuate in the weld nugget owing to dynamic recrystallization of alloy materials and formation of brittle intermetallic compounds of alloy materials in the weld nugget; maximum hardness of 10.74 GPa occurred for the sample with least intermetallic thickness of 1.2 mu m. Resonant sensors and crystal oscillators for mass detection need to be excited at very high natural frequencies (MHz). Use of such systems to measure mass of biological materials affects the accuracy of mass measurement due to their viscous and/or viscoelastic properties. The measurement limitation of such sensor system is the difficulty in accounting for the ``missing mass'' of the biological specimen in question. A sensor system has been developed in this work, to be operated in the stiffness controlled region at very low frequencies as compared to its fundamental natural frequency. The resulting reduction in the sensitivity due to non-resonant mode of operation of this sensor is compensated by the high resolution of the sensor. The mass of different aged drosophila melanogaster (fruit fly) is measured. The difference in its mass measurement during resonant mode of operation is also presented. That, viscosity effects do not affect the working of this non-resonant mass sensor is clearly established by direct comparison. (C) 2014 AIP Publishing LLC.

Milling is an energy intensive process and it is considered as one of the most energy inefficient processes. Electrical and mechanical shock loading can be used to develop a pre-treatment methodology to enhance energy efficiency of comminution and liberation of minerals. Coal and Banded Hematite Jasper (BHJ) Iron ores samples were taken for the study to know the effect of shock loading. These samples were exposed to 5 electric shocks of 300 kV using an electric shock loading device. A diaphragmless shock tube was used to produce 3 and 6 compressed air shocks of Mach number 2.12 to treat the coal and Iron ore samples. Microscopic, comminution and liberation studies were carried out to compare the effectiveness of these approaches. It was found that electric shock loading can comminute the coal samples more effectively and increases the yield of carbon by 40% at 1.6 gm/cc density over the untreated coal samples. Mechanical shock loading showed improved milling performance for both the materials and 12.90% and 8.1% reduction in the D-80 of the particles was observed during grinding for treated samples of coal and iron, respectively. Liberation of minerals in BHJ Iron ore was found unaffected due to low intensity of the mechanical shock waves and non conductivity of minerals. Compressed air based shock loading is easier to operate than electrical shock loading and it needs to be explored further to improve the energy efficacy of comminution. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. There is a persistent need to assess the effects of TiO2 nanoparticles on the aquatic ecosystem owing to their increasing usage in consumer products and risk of environmental release. The current study is focused on TiO2 nanoparticle-induced acute toxicity at sub-ppm level (<= 1 ppm) on the three different freshwater sediment bacterial isolates and their consortium under two different irradiation (visible light and dark) conditions. The consortium of the bacterial isolates was found to be less affected by the exposure to the nanoparticles compared to the individual cells. The oxidative stress contributed considerably towards the cytotoxicity under both light and dark conditions. A statistically significant increase in membrane permeability was noted under the dark conditions as compared to the light conditions. The optical and fluorescence microscopic images showed aggregation and chain formation of the bacterial cells, when exposed to the nanoparticles. The electron microscopic (SEM, TEM) observations suggested considerable damage of cells and bio-uptake of nanoparticles. The exopolysaccrides (EPS) production and biofilm formation were noted to increase in the presence of the nanoparticles, and expression of the key genes involved in biofilm formation was studied by RT-PCR. Al-doped ZnO thin films were synthesized from oxygen reactive co-sputtering of Al and Zn targets. Explicit doping of Al in the highly c-axis oriented crystalline films of ZnO was manifested in terms of structural optical and electrical properties. Electrical conduction with different extent of Al doping into the crystal lattice of ZnO (AZnO) were characterized by frequency dependent (40 Hz-50 MHz) resistance. From the frequency dependent resistance, the ac conduction of them, and correlations of localized charge particles in the crystalline films were studied. The dc conduction at the low frequency region was found to increase from 8.623 mu A to 1.14 mA for the samples AZnO1 (1 wt% Al) and AZnO2 (2 wt% Al), respectively. For the sample AZnO10 (10 wt% Al) low frequency dc conduction was not found due to the electrode polarization effect. The measure of the correlation length by inverse of threshold frequency (omega(0)) showed that on application of a dc electric field such length decreases and the decrease in correlation parameter(s) indicates that the correlation between potentials wells of charge particles decreases for the unidirectional nature of dc bias. The comparison between the correlation length and the extent of correlation in the doped ZnO could not be made due to the observation of several threshold frequencies at the extent of higher doping. Such threshold frequencies were explained by the population possibility of correlated charge carriers that responded at different frequencies. For AZnO2 (2% Al), the temperature dependent (from 4.5 to 288 K) resistance study showed that the variable range hopping mechanism was the most dominating conduction mechanism at higher temperature whereas at low temperature region it was influenced by the small polaronic hopping conduction mechanism. There was no significant influence found in these mechanisms on applications of 1, 2 and 3 V as biases.

We report the morphology-controlled synthesis of aluminium (Al) doped zinc oxide (ZnO) nanosheets on Al alloy (AA-6061) substrate by a low-temperature solution growth method without using any external seed layer and doping process. Doped ZnO nanosheets were obtained at low temperatures of 60-90 degrees C for the growth time of 4 hours. In addition to the synthesis, the effect of growth temperature on the morphological changes of ZnO nanosheets is also reported. As-synthesized nanosheets are characterized by FE-SEM, XRD TEM and XPS for their morphology, crystallinity, microstructure and compositional analysis respectively. The doping of Al in ZnO nanosheets is confirmed with EDXS and XPS. Furthermore, the effect of growth temperature on the morphological changes was studied in the range of 50 to 95 degrees C. It was found that the thickness and height of the nanosheets varied with respect to the growth temperature. The study has given an important insight into the structural morphology with respect to the growth temperature, which in turn enabled us to determine the growth temperature window for the ZnO nanosheets. These Al doped ZnO nanosheets have potential application possibilities in gas sensors, solar cells and energy harvesting devices like nanogenerators.

Graphene layers have been transferred directly on to paper without any intermediate layers to yield G-paper. Resistive gas sensors have been fabricated using strips of G-paper. These sensors achieved a remarkable lower limit of detection of similar to 300 parts per trillion (ppt) for NO2, which is comparable to or better than those from other paper-based sensors. Ultraviolet exposure was found to dramatically reduce the recovery time and improve response times. G-paper sensors are also found to be robust against minor strain, which was also found to increase sensitivity. G-paper is expected to enable a simple and inexpensive low-cost flexible graphene platform

We show that copper-matrix composites that contain 20 vol. % of an in situ processed, polymer-derived, ceramic phase constituted from Si-C-N have unusual friction-and-wear properties. They show negligible wear despite a coefficient of friction (COF) that approaches 0.7. This behavior is ascribed to the lamellar structure of the composite such that the interlamellar regions are infused with nanoscale dispersion of ceramic particles. There is significant hardening of the composite just adjacent to the wear surface by severe plastic deformation.
