The chemical potentials of tin in its α-solid solutions with Cu, Au and Cu + Au alloys have been measured using a gas-solid equilibration technique. The variation of the excess chemical potential of tin with its composition in the alloy is related to the solute-solute repulsive interaction, while the excess chemical potential at infinite dilution of the solute is a measure of solvent-solute interaction energies. It is shown that solute-solute interaction is primarily determined by the concentration of (s + p) electrons in the conduction band, although the interaction energies are smaller than those predicted by either the rigid band model or calculation based on Friedel oscillations in the potential function. Finally, the variation of the solvent-solute interaction with solvent composition in the ternary system can be accounted for in terms of a quasi-chemical treatment which takes into account the clustering of the solvent atoms around the solute.

A review of the structural and thermodynamic information and phase equilibria in the Cu-Fe-O system suggested that a consistent, quantitative description of the system is hampered by lack of data on activities in the spinel solid solution CuFe2O4-Fe3O4. Therefore the activity of Fe3O4 in this solid solution is derived from measurements of the oxygen potentials established at 1000°C by mixtures containing Fe2O3 and spinel solid solutions of known composition. The oxygen pressures were measured manometrically for solid solutions rich in CuFe2O4, while for Fe3O4-rich compositions the oxygen potentials were obtained by an emf technique. The activities show significant negative deviations from Raoult’s law. The compositions of the spinel solid solutions in equilibrium with CuO + CuFeO2 and Cu + CuFeO2 were obtained from chemical analysis of the solid solution after magnetic separation. The oxygen potential of the three-phase mixture Cu + CuFeO2 + Fe3O4(spinel s.s.) was determined by a solid oxide galvanic cell. From these measurements a complete phase diagram and consistent thermodynamic data on the ternary condensed phases, CuFeO2 and CuFeO2O4, were obtained. An analysis of the free energy of mixing of the spinel solid solution furnished information on the distribution of cations and their valencies between the tetrahedral and octahedral sites of the spinel lattice, which is consistent with X-ray diffraction, magnetic and Seebeck coefficient measurements.

The activity of Cr20~ in Cr20~-A12Oa solid solution has been determined in the temperature range 800~176 from electromotive force measurements on the solid oxide galvanic cell Pt,Cr + Cr2OJY~O~-ThO2/Cr + Cr~A12-xO~,Pt The activities of Cr203 and A120~ in the solid solution show both positive and negative deviations from Raoult's law. The heat and entropy of mixing of the solid Solution obtained from the temperature dependence of the emf can be expressed as AH = XCr203XA1203 [31,700Xcrzo3 -}- 37,470XA1203] J mole -I hS = -- 1.8R [Xcr2o3 In Xcr2o3 + XA12o3 In XAaos]The entropy of mixing is 10% lower than that predicted by the Temkin model. The large positive heat of mixing in the Cr2Os-A12Oa solid solution, however, suggests that this apparent: entropy discrepancy originates with the clustering of positive ions on the cation sublattice. The asymmetric miscibility gap exhibited in the CrzOa-A12Oa system below 900~ is consistent with the thermodynamic data trends recorded at the more elevated temperatures.

The Gibbs energy of mixing for the system Fe3O4-FeAl2O4 was determined at 1573 K using a gas-metal-oxide equilibration technique. Oxide solid solution samples were equilibrated with Pt foils under controlled CO+CO2 gas streams. The equilibrium iron concentration in the foil was determined by chemical analysis. The cation distribution between tetrahedral and octahedral sites in the spinel crystal can be calculated from site-preference energies and used as an alternate method of determining some thermodynamic properties, including the Gibbs energy of mixing. The solvus occurring at low temperatures in the system Fe3C4-FeAl2C4 was used to derive the effect of lattice distortion due to cation size difference on the enthalpy of mixing and to obtain a better approximation to the measured thermodynamic quantities.

Solid solutions of Fe304-FeV204 and Fe304-FeCr204 were prepared and equilibrated with Pt under controlled streams of CO/CO, gas mixtures at 1673 K. The concentration of Fe in Pt was used to determine the activity of Fe304 in the solid solutions. The activity of the second component was calculated by Gibbshhem integration. From these data, the Gibbs energy of mixing was derived for both systems. The experimental results and theoretical values which are determined from calculated cation distribution compare favorably in the case of vanadite solid solutions but not in the case of chromite solid solutions. The difference is attributed to a heat term arising from lattice distortion due to cation size difference. The positive heat of mixing will give rise to a miscibility gap in the system Fe304-FeCr204 at lower temperatures.

In the present study singular fractal functions (SFF) were used to generate stress-strain plots for quasibrittle material like concrete and cement mortar and subsequently stress-strain plot of cement mortar obtained using SFF was used for modeling fracture process in concrete. The fracture surface of concrete is rough and irregular. The fracture surface of concrete is affected by the concrete's microstructure that is influenced by water cement ratio, grade of cement and type of aggregate 11-41. Also the macrostructural properties such as the size and shape of the specimen, the initial notch length and the rate of loading contribute to the shape of the fracture surface of concrete. It is known that concrete is a heterogeneous and quasi-brittle material containing micro-defects and its mechanical properties strongly relate to the presence of micro-pores and micro-cracks in concrete 11-41. The damage in concrete is believed to be mainly due to initiation and development of micro-defects with irregularity and fractal characteristics. However, repeated observations at various magnifications also reveal a variety of additional structures that fall between the `micro' and the `macro' and have not yet been described satisfactorily in a systematic manner [1-11,15-17]. The concept of singular fractal functions by Mosolov was used to generate stress-strain plot of cement concrete, cement mortar and subsequently the stress-strain plot of cement mortar was used in two-dimensional lattice model [28]. A two-dimensional lattice model was used to study concrete fracture by considering softening of matrix (cement mortar). The results obtained from simulations with lattice model show softening behavior of concrete and fairly agrees with the experimental results. The number of fractured elements are compared with the acoustic emission (AE) hits. The trend in the cumulative fractured beam elements in the lattice fracture simulation reasonably reflected the trend in the recorded AE measurements. In other words, the pattern in which AE hits were distributed around the notch has the same trend as that of the fractured elements around the notch which is in support of lattice model. The Gibbs' energy offormation of the intermetallic compound URh3has been measured in the temperature range 980 to 1320 K using an oxide solid state cell incorporating yttria-doped thoria as the solid electrolyte and a mixture of manganese and manganese oxide as the reference electrode. The cell can be represented as Pt, Mn + MnO I (Y203)Th02 I Rh + URh3 + U02 + x' Rh, Pt The reversible emf of the cell was a linear function of temperature E = 15.60 +0.0237 T (±0.8) mY. Using auxiliary thermodynamic data for MnO and U02+ x the Gibbs' energy of formation of URh3 from component metals has been computed. The results can be expressed by the equation L'.G?< URh3 > = -316240 + 13.22 T (± 3000) J mol-1. The "third-law" enthalpy of formation of URh3at 298 K is -293.2 (± 4) kJ mol-1, significantly more negative than the value of -181.5 kJ mol-1 calculated using Miedema's model.

New compos~tiong radient solid electrolytes are developed which have application in high temperature solid state galvanic sensors and provide a new tool for thermodynamic measurements. The electrolyte consists oi a solid solution between two ionic conductors with a common mobile ion and spatial variation in composition of otber coxup nents. Incorporation of the composite electrolyte in sensors permits the use oi dissimilar gas electrodes. It is demonsuated, both experimentall y and theoretically, that the composition gradient of the relativeiy immobile species does not give rise to a diffusion potential. The emi of a cell is determined by the activity of the mobile species at the two eiectrodes. The thermodynamic properties of solid solutions can be measured using the gradient solid electrolyte. The experimental stuay is based on model systems A?(COj)x(S04)l-x (A=Na,K),where S \.aria across the electrolyte. The functionally gradient solid electrolytes used for activity measurements consist of pure carbonate at one ena and the solid solution under stuav at the other. Activities of FeCr2O4 in the spinel solid solutions Fe X Mg1−X Cr2O4 (0solid-state galvanic cell of the type Pt, Fe + Fe X Mg1−X Cr2O4 + Cr2O3//(Y2O3) ThO2/(CaO) ZrO2//Fe + FeCr2O4 + Cr2O3, Pt Activities of both the components exhibit small negative deviation from the ideal behavior, characterized by the regular solution parameter Ω s =−2260 (±200) J/mol. The lattice parameter of the spinel solid solutions quenched from 1200 K was found to obey Vegard’s law. The phase relations in the FeO-MgO-Cr2O3 system have been deduced from the results obtained in this study together with other relevant thermodynamic data from the literature. The tie-lines between the solid solutions with rock salt and spinel structures represent the influence of intercrystalline ion exchange. The tie-lines are skewed toward the FeCr2O4 corner, primarily because of the higher stability of FeCr2O4 compared to MgCr2O4, with respect to their component binary oxides. The oxygen partial pressure corresponding to the two three-phase regions, Fe + Fe X Mg1−X Cr2O4 + Cr2O3 and Fe + Fe Y Mg1−Y O + Fe X Mg1−X Cr2O4, have been evaluated as a function of composition at 1200 K.

Although Pb(Zr1−XTiX)O3 solid solution is the cornerstone of the piezoelectric ceramics, there is no information in the literature on thermodynamic activities of the component phases in the solid solution. Using inter-crystalline ion exchange equilibria between Pb(Zr1−XTiX)O3 solid solution with cubic perovskite structure and (Zr1−YTiY)O2 solid solutions with monoclinic and tetragonal structures, activities of PbTiO3 and PbZrO3 in the perovskite solid solution have been derived at 1373 K using the modified Gibbs–Duhem integration technique of Jacob and Jeffes. Tie-lines from the cubic solid solution are skewed towards the ZrO2 corner. Activities in the zirconia-rich (Zr1−YTiY)O2 solid solutions are taken from a recent emf study. The results for the perovskite solid solution at 1373 K can be represented by a sub-regular solution model:View the MathML sourcewhere ΔGE,M is the excess Gibbs energy of mixing of the cubic solid solution and Xi represents the mole fraction of component i. There is a significant positive deviation from ideality for PbTiO3-rich compositions and mild negative deviation near the PbZrO3 corner. The cubic solid solution is intrinsically stable against composition fluctuations at temperatures down to 840 K. The results contrast sharply with the recent calorimetric data on enthalpy of mixing which signal instability of the cubic perovskite solid solution.

The generalizations of the Onsager model for the radial boundary layer and the Carrier-Maslen model for the end-cap axial boundary layer in a high-speed rotating cylinder are formulated for studying the secondary gas flow due to wall heating and due to insertion of mass, momentum and energy into the cylinder. The generalizations have wider applicability than the original Onsager and Carrier-Maslen models, because they are not restricted to the limit A >> 1, though they are restricted to the limit R e >> 1 and a high-aspect-ratio cylinder whose length/diameter ratio is large. Here, the stratification parameter A = root m Omega(2)R(2)/2k(B)T). This parameter A is the ratio of the peripheral speed, Omega R, to the most probable molecular speed, root 2k(B)T/m, the Reynolds number Re = rho w Omega R(2)/mu, where m is the molecular mass, Omega and R are the rotational speed and radius of the cylinder, k(B) is the Boltzmann constant, T is the gas temperature, rho(w) is the gas density at wall, and mu is the gas viscosity. In the case of wall forcing, analytical solutions are obtained for the sixth-order generalized Onsager equations for the master potential, and for the fourth-order generalized Carrier-Maslen equation for the velocity potential. For the case of mass/momentum/energy insertion into the flow, the separation-of-variables procedure is used, and the appropriate homogeneous boundary conditions are specified so that the linear operators in the axial and radial directions are self-adjoint. The discrete eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of the linear operators (sixth-order and second-order in the radial and axial directions for the Onsager equation, and fourth-order and second-order in the axial and radial directions for the Carrier-Maslen equation) are determined. These solutions are compared with direct simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC) simulations. The comparison reveals that the boundary conditions in the simulations and analysis have to be matched with care. The commonly used `diffuse reflection' boundary conditions at solid walls in DSMC simulations result in a non-zero slip velocity as well as a `temperature slip' (gas temperature at the wall is different from wall temperature). These have to be incorporated in the analysis in order to make quantitative predictions. In the case of mass/momentum/energy sources within the flow, it is necessary to ensure that the homogeneous boundary conditions are accurately satisfied in the simulations. When these precautions are taken, there is excellent agreement between analysis and simulations, to within 10 %, even when the stratification parameter is as low as 0.707, the Reynolds number is as low as 100 and the aspect ratio (length/diameter) of the cylinder is as low as 2, and the secondary flow velocity is as high as 0.2 times the maximum base flow velocity. The predictions of the generalized models are also significantly better than those of the original Onsager and Carrier-Maslen models, which are restricted to thin boundary layers in the limit of high stratification parameter.

Although Al(1-x)Ga(x)N semiconductors are used in lighting, displays and high-power amplifiers, there is no experimental thermodynamic information on nitride solid solutions. Thermodynamic data are useful for assessing the intrinsic stability of the solid solution with respect to phase separation and extrinsic stability in relation to other phases such as metallic contacts. The activity of GaN in Al(1-x)Ga(x)N solid solution is determined at 1100 K using a solid-state electrochemical cell: Ga + Al(1-x)Ga(x)N/Fe, Ca(3)N(2)//CaF(2)//Ca(3)N(2), N(2) (0.1 MPa), Fe. The solid-state cell is based on single crystal CaF(2) as the electrolyte and Ca(3)N(2) as the auxiliary electrode to convert the nitrogen chemical potential established by the equilibrium between Ga and Al(1-x)Ga(x)N solid solution into an equivalent fluorine potential. Excess Gibbs free energy of mixing of the solid solution is computed from the results. Results suggest an unusual mixing behavior: a mild tendency for ordering at three discrete compositions (x = 0.25, 0.5 and 0.75) superimposed on predominantly positive deviation from ideality. The lattice parameters exhibit slight deviation from Vegard's law, with the a-parameter showing positive and the c-parameter negative deviation. Although the solid solution is stable in the full range of compositions at growth temperatures, thermodynamic instability is indicated at temperatures below 410 K in the composition range 0.26 <= x <= 0.5. At 355 K, two biphasic regions appear, with terminal solid solutions stable only for 0 <= x <= 0.26 and 0.66 <= x <= 1. The range of terminal solid solubility reduces with decreasing temperature. Pure stoichiometric MgRh(2)O(4) could not be prepared by solid state reaction from an equimolar mixture of MgO and Rh(2)O(3) in air. The spinel phase formed always contained excess of Mg and traces of Rh or Rh(2)O(3). The spinel phase can be considered as a solid solution of Mg(2)RhO(4) in MgRh(2)O(4). The compositions of the spinel solid solution in equilibrium with different phases in the ternary system Mg-Rh-O were determined by electron probe microanalysis. The oxygen potential established by the equilibrium between Rh + MgO + Mg(1+x)Rh(2-x)O(4) was measured as a function of temperature using a solid-state cell incorporating yttria-stabilized zirconia as an electrolyte and pure oxygen at 0.1 MPa as the reference electrode. To avoid polarization of the working electrode during the measurements, an improved design of the cell with a buffer electrode was used. The standard Gibbs energies of formation of MgRh(2)O(4) and Mg(2)RhO(4) were deduced from the measured electromotive force (e.m.f.) by invoking a model for the spinel solid solution. The parameters of the model were optimized using the measured composition of the spinel solid solution in different phase fields and imposed oxygen partial pressures. The results can be summarized by the equations: MgO + beta -Rh(2)O(3) -> MgRh(2)O(4); Delta G degrees (+ 1010)/J mol(-1) = -32239 + 7.534T; 2MgO + RhO(2) -> Mg(2)RhO(4); Delta G degrees(+/- 1270)/J mol(-1) = 36427 -4.163T; Delta G(M)/J mol(-1) = 2RT(xInx + (1-x)In(1-x)) + 4650x(1-x), where Delta G degrees is the standard Gibbs free energy change for the reaction and G(M) is the free energy of mixing of the spinel solid solution Mg(1+x)Rh(2-x)O(4). Abstract | The importance of well-defined inorganic porous nanostructured materials in the context of biotechnological applications such as drug delivery and biomolecular sensing is reviewed here in detail. Under optimized conditions, the confinement of “bio”-relevant molecules such as pharmaceutical drugs, enzymes or proteins inside such inorganic nanostructures may be remarkably beneficial leading to enhanced molecular stability, activity and performance. From the point of view of basic research, molecular confinement inside nanostructures poses several formidable and intriguing problems of statistical mechanics at the mesoscopic scale. The theoretical comprehension of such non-trivial issues will not only aid in the interpretation of observed phenomena but also help in designing better inorganic nanostructured materials for biotechnological applications.

We study the scaling behavior of the fidelity (F) in the thermodynamic limit using the examples of a system of Dirac fermions in one dimension and the Kitaev model on a honeycomb lattice. We show that the thermodynamic fidelity inside the gapless as well as gapped phases follow power-law scalings, with the power given by some of the critical exponents of the system. The generic scaling forms of F for an anisotropic quantum critical point for both the thermodynamic and nonthermodynamic limits have been derived and verified for the Kitaev model. The interesting scaling behavior of F inside the gapless phase of the Kitaev model is also discussed. Finally, we consider a rotation of each spin in the Kitaev model around the z axis and calculate F through the overlap between the ground states for the angle of rotation eta and eta + d eta, respectively. We thereby show that the associated geometric phase vanishes. We have supplemented our analytical calculations with numerical simulations wherever necessary.
