Bayesian parameter identification in dynamic state space models using modified measurement equations
Resumo:
When Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) samplers are used in problems of system parameter identification, one would face computational difficulties in dealing with large amount of measurement data and (or) low levels of measurement noise. Such exigencies are likely to occur in problems of parameter identification in dynamical systems when amount of vibratory measurement data and number of parameters to be identified could be large. In such cases, the posterior probability density function of the system parameters tends to have regions of narrow supports and a finite length MCMC chain is unlikely to cover pertinent regions. The present study proposes strategies based on modification of measurement equations and subsequent corrections, to alleviate this difficulty. This involves artificial enhancement of measurement noise, assimilation of transformed packets of measurements, and a global iteration strategy to improve the choice of prior models. Illustrative examples cover laboratory studies on a time variant dynamical system and a bending-torsion coupled, geometrically non-linear building frame under earthquake support motions. Gamma-band (25-140 Hz) oscillations are ubiquitous in mammalian forebrain structures involved in sensory processing, attention, learning and memory. The optic tectum (01) is the central structure in a midbrain network that participates critically in controlling spatial attention. In this review, we summarize recent advances in characterizing a neural circuit in this midbrain network that generates large amplitude, space-specific, gamma oscillations in the avian OT, both in vivo and in vitro. We describe key physiological and pharmacological mechanisms that produce and regulate the structure of these oscillations. The extensive similarities between midbrain gamma oscillations in birds and those in the neocortex and hippocampus of mammals, offer important insights into the functional significance of a midbrain gamma oscillatory code.

Using first-principles calculations, we establish the existence of highly-stable polymorphs of hcp metals (Ti, Mg, Be, La and Y) with nanoscale structural periodicity. They arise from heterogeneous deformation of the hcp structure occurring in response to large shear stresses localized at the basal planes separated by a few nanometers. Through Landau theoretical analysis, we show that their stability derives from nonlinear coupling between strains at different length scales. Such multiscale hyperelasticity and long-period structures constitute a new mechanism of size-dependent plasticity and its enhancement in nanoscale hcp metals.

A series of mononuclear five-coordinate cobalt(II) complexes, Co(dbdmp)(X)]Y, where dbdmp=N,N-diethyl-N,N-bis((3,5-dimethyl-1H-pyrazol-1-yl)methyl)ethane-1, 2-diamine, X=N-3(-)/NCO-/NCS- and Y=PF6-/BF4-/ClO4-, have been synthesized and characterized by microanalyses and spectroscopic techniques. Crystal structures of Co(N-3)(dbdmp)]PF6 (1), Co(N-3)(dbdmp)]ClO4 (3), Co(NCO)(dbdmp)]PF6 (4), Co(NCO)(dbdmp)]ClO4 (6), and Co(NCS)(dbdmp)]ClO4 (9) have been solved by single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies and showed that all the complexes have distorted trigonal bipyramidal geometry; PF6- counter anion containing complexes Co(N-3)(dbdmp)]PF6 and Co(NCO)(dbdmp)]PF6 have chiral space groups. The binding ability of synthesized complexes with CT-DNA and bovine serum albumin (BSA) has been studied by spectroscopic methods and viscosity measurements. The experimental results of absorption titration of cobalt(II) complexes with CT-DNA indicate that the complexes have ability to form adducts and they can stabilize the DNA helix. The cobalt(II) complexes exhibit good binding propensity to BSA protein.

Use of circular hexagonal honeycomb structures and tube assemblies in energy absorption systems has attracted a large number of literature on their characterization under crushing and impact loads. Notwithstanding these, effective shear moduli (G*) required for complete transverse elastic characterization and in analyses of hierarchical structures have received scant attention. In an attempt to fill this void, the present study undertakes to evaluate G* of a generalized circular honeycomb structures and tube assemblies in a diamond array structure (DAS) with no restriction on their thickness. These structures present a potential to realize a spectrum of moduli with minimal modifications, a point of relevance for manufactures and designers. To evaluate G* in this paper, models based on technical theories - thin ring theory and curved beam theory - and rigorous theory of elasticity are investigated and corroborated with FEA employing contact elements. Technical theories which give a good match for thin HCS offer compact expressions for moduli which can be harvested to study sensitivity of moduli on topology. On the other hand, elasticity model offers a very good match over a large range of thickness along with exact analysis of stresses by employing computationally efficient expressions. Analysis of the variability in the responses of large structural systems and quantification of their linearity or nonlinearity as a potential non-invasive means of structural system assessment from output-only condition remains a challenging problem. In this study, the Delay Vector Variance (DVV) method is used for full scale testing of both pseudo-dynamic and dynamic responses of two bridges, in order to study the degree of nonlinearity of their measured response signals. The DVV detects the presence of determinism and nonlinearity in a time series and is based upon the examination of local predictability of a signal. The pseudo-dynamic data is obtained from a concrete bridge during repair while the dynamic data is obtained from a steel railway bridge traversed by a train. We show that DVV is promising as a marker in establishing the degree to which a change in the signal nonlinearity reflects the change in the real behaviour of a structure. It is also useful in establishing the sensitivity of instruments or sensors deployed to monitor such changes. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

We discuss here a semiconductors assembly comprising of titanium dioxide (TiO2) rods sensitized by cadmium sulfide (CdS) nanocrystals for potential applications in large area electronics on three dimensional (3-D) substrates. Vertically aligned TiO2 rods are grown on a substrate using a 150 degrees C process flow and then sensitized with CdS by SILAR method at room temperature. This structure forms an effective photoconductor as the photo-generated electrons are rapidly removed from the CdS via the TiO2 thereby permitting a hole rich CdS. Current-voltage characteristics are measured and models illustrate space charge limited photo-current as the mechanism of charge transport at moderate voltage bias. The stable assembly and high speed are achieved. The frequency response with a loading of 10 pF and 9 M Omega shows a half power frequency of 100 Hz. (C) 2015 The Electrochemical Society. High-kappa TiO2 thin films have been fabricated from a facile, combined sol-gel spin - coating technique on p and n type silicon substrate. XRD and Raman studies headed the existence of anatase phase of TiO2 with a small grain size of 18 nm. The refractive index `n' quantified from ellipsometry is 2.41. AFM studies suggest a high quality, pore free films with a fairly small surface roughness of 6 angstrom. The presence of Ti in its tetravalent state is confirmed by XPS analysis. The defect parameters observed at the interface of Si/TiO2 were studied by capacitance - voltage (C - V) and deep level transient spectroscopy (DLTS). The flat - band voltage (V-FB) and the density of slow interface states estimated are -0.9, -0.44 V and 5.24x10(10), 1.03x10(11) cm(-2); for the NMOS and PMOS capacitors, respectively. The activation energies, interface state densities and capture cross -sections measured by DLTS are E-V + 0.30, E-C - 0.21 eV; 8.73x10(11), 6.41x10(11) eV(-1) cm(-2) and 5.8x10(-23), 8.11x10(-23) cm(2) for the NMOS and PMOS structures, respectively. A low value of interface state density in both P-and N-MOS structures makes it a suitable alternate dielectric layer for CMOS applications. And also very low value of capture cross section for both the carriers due to the amphoteric nature of defect indicates that the traps are not aggressive recombination centers and possibly can not contribute to the device operation to a large extent. Multilevel inverters with dodecagonal (12-sided polygon) voltage space vector (SV) structures have advantages like extension of linear modulation range, elimination of fifth and seventh harmonics in phase voltages and currents for the full modulation range including extreme 12-step operation, reduced device voltage ratings, lesser dv/dt stresses on devices and motor phase windings resulting in lower EMI/EMC problems, and lower switching frequency-making it more suitable for high-power drive applications. This paper proposes a simple method to obtain pulsewidth modulation (PWM) timings for a dodecagonal voltage SV structure using only sampled reference voltages. In addition to this, a carrier-based method for obtaining the PWM timings for a general N-level dodecagonal structure is proposed in this paper for the first time. The algorithm outputs the triangle information and the PWM timing values which can be set as the compare values for any carrier-based hardware PWM module to obtain SV PWM like switching sequences. The proposed method eliminates the need for angle estimation, computation of modulation indices, and iterative search algorithms that are typical in multilevel dodecagonal SV systems. The proposed PWM scheme was implemented on a five-level dodecagonal SV structure. Exhaustive simulation and experimental results for steady-state and transient conditions are presented to validate the proposed method.

Since streaming data keeps coming continuously as an ordered sequence, massive amounts of data is created. A big challenge in handling data streams is the limitation of time and space. Prototype selection on streaming data requires the prototypes to be updated in an incremental manner as new data comes in. We propose an incremental algorithm for prototype selection. This algorithm can also be used to handle very large datasets. Results have been presented on a number of large datasets and our method is compared to an existing algorithm for streaming data. Our algorithm saves time and the prototypes selected gives good classification accuracy.

Composite materials are very useful in structural engineering particularly in weight sensitive applications. Two different test models of the same structure made from composite materials can display very different dynamic behavior due to large uncertainties associated with composite material properties. Also, composite structures can suffer from pre-existing imperfections like delaminations, voids or cracks during fabrication. In this paper, we show that modeling and material uncertainties in composite structures can cause considerable problein in damage assessment. A recently developed C-0 shear deformable locking free refined composite plate element is employed in the numerical simulations to alleviate modeling uncertainty. A qualitative estimate of the impact of modeling uncertainty on the damage detection problem is made. A robust Fuzzy Logic System (FLS) with sliding window defuzzifier is used for delamination damage detection in composite plate type structures. The FLS is designed using variations in modal frequencies due to randomness in material properties. Probabilistic analysis is performed using Monte Carlo Simulation (MCS) on a composite plate finite element model. It is demonstrated that the FLS shows excellent robustness in delamination detection at very high levels of randomness in input data. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
