Synchronising bushcricket males achieve synchrony by delaying their chirps in response to calling neighbours. In multi-male choruses, males that delay chirps in response to all their neighbours would remain silent most of the time and be unable to attract mates. This problem could be overcome if the afferent auditory system exhibited selective attention, and thus a male interacted only with a subset of neighbours. We investigated whether individuals of the bushcricket genus Mecopoda restricted their attention to louder chirps neurophysiologically, behaviourally and through spacing. We found that louder leading chirps were preferentially represented in the omega neuron but the representation of softer following chirps was not completely abolished. Following chirps that were 20 dB louder than leading chirps were better represented than leading chirps. During acoustic interactions, males synchronised with leading chirps even when the following chirps were 20 dB louder. Males did not restrict their attention to louder chirps during interactions but were affected by all chirps above a particular threshold. In the field, we found that males on average had only one or two neighbours whose calls were above this threshold. Selective attention is thus achieved in this bushcricket through spacing rather than neurophysiological filtering of softer signals.

Multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were decorated with crystalline zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) by wet chemical route to form MWCNT/ZnO NPs hybrid. The hybrid sample was characterized by scanning and transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Electrical conductivity of the hybrid can be tuned by varying the ZnO NPs content in the hybrid. In order to investigate the effect of nanoparticles loading on the conduction of MWCNTs network, electrical conductivity studies have been carried out in the wide temperature range 1.5-300K. The electrical conductivity of the hybrid below 100K is explained with the combination of variable range hopping conduction and thermal fluctuation induced tunnelling model. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. The ignition behaviour of boron powder, prepared through electrowinning process, was studied by using thermogravimetry coupled with simultaneous differential thermal analysis (TG-SDTA). The dependence of the inception of the ignition reaction on the partial pressure of oxygen, particle size of the boron powder and heating rate was investigated. It was observed that all these factors affect the ignition temperature. Boron powder with a mean particle size of about 10 mu m was found to be susceptible to ignition in oxygen even at 783K. In general, the susceptibility to ignition was found to vary inversely with the degree of crystallinity. Presence of carbon was found to retard the oxidation of boron and raise the ignition temperature. These results are useful in safe handling and storage of finely divided boron powder and in the subsequent production of boron carbide from it. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

A simple analog instrumentation for Electrical Impedance Tomography is developed and calibrated using the practical phantoms. A constant current injector consisting of a modified Howland voltage controlled current source fed by a voltage controlled oscillator is developed to inject a constant current to the phantom boundary. An instrumentation amplifier, 50 Hz notch filter and a narrow band pass filter are developed and used for signal conditioning. Practical biological phantoms are developed and the forward problem is studied to calibrate the EIT-instrumentation. An array of sixteen stainless steel electrodes is developed and placed inside the phantom tank filled with KCl solution. 1 mA, 50 kHz sinusoidal current is injected at the phantom boundary using adjacent current injection protocol. The differential potentials developed at the voltage electrodes are measured for sixteen current injections. Differential voltage signal is passed through an instrumentation amplifier and a filtering block and measured by a digital multimeter. A forward solver is developed using Finite Element Method in MATLAB7.0 for solving the EIT governing equation. Differential potentials are numerically calculated using the forward solver with a simulated current and bathing solution conductivity. Measured potential data is compared with the differential potentials calculated for calibrating the instrumentation to acquire the voltage data suitable for better image reconstruction.

Thin films of antimony-doped tin oxide (SnO2:Sb) were prepared by spray pyrolysis using stannous chloride (SnCl2) and antimony trichloride (SbCl3) as precursors. The antimony doping was varied from 0 to 4 wt%. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) revealed the surface morphology to be very smooth, yet grainy in nature. X-ray diffraction (XRD) shows films to have preferred orientation, which varies with the extent of antimony doping: undoped films prefer the (2 1 1) orientation, while the (3 0 1) orientation is preferred for doping levels of 0.5 and 1.0 wt%. For higher doping levels, the (2 0 0) orientation is preferred. This difference in preferred orientations is reflected in the SEM of the films. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) reveals that film roughness is not affected by antimony doping. The minimum sheet resistance (2.17 ohm/square) achieved in the present study is lower than values reported to date in SnO2:Sb films prepared from SnCl2 precursor. The Hall mobility of undoped SnO2 films was found to be 109.52 cm(2)/V s, which reduces to 2.55 cm(2)/ Vs for the films doped with 4 wt% of Sb. On the other hand, the carrier concentration, which is 1.23 x 10(19) cm(-3) in undoped films, increases to 2.89 x 10(21) cm(-3) for the films doped with 4 wt% of Sb. (c) 2004 Elsevier B.V. Soils in and and semi-arid zones undergoes volume changes due to wetting. Depending upon the type of clay minerals present, degree of saturation, externally applied load and bonding, the fine grained soils either swells or compresses. One of the parameter that affects the volume change behaviour is the primary clay mineral present in their clay size fraction. A simple method of identifying the same has been presented. It has been brought out that in an expansive unsaturated undisturbed soil, the diffuse double layer repulsion, the stress state and the bonding play significant role in their volume change behaviour. In non-expansive fine grained unsaturated undisturbed soils, the shearing resistance at particle level (including the matrix suction and bonding) and fabric play a significant role in influencing the volume change behaviour. While both the mechanism co-exist, one of them play a dominant role depending upon the primary clay mineral is swelling or non swelling.

Artificial superlattices of SrTiO3 and BaZrO3 were grown epitaxially with different periodicities on SrRuO3 coated (00 1) SrTiO3 substrates by pulsed excimer laser ablation. Superlattices were structurally characterized by X-Ray theta-2 theta diffraction data. Electrical characterization was done in metal-insulation-metal configuration. Capacitance-voltage measurements showed limited amount of tunability. The DC field induced tunability has been observed to be sensitive to the periodicity of the superlattices, hence the effective strain present in the layers. Hysteretic behaviour in capacitance-voltage (C-V) and polarization versus electric field (P-E) results from the superlattices also indicate the sensitivity of the interfaces. Interfacial strain is supposed to be the most probable cause for such a behaviour which is also manifested in the variation of dielectric constant with individual layer thicknesses. A detailed polarographic (a.c. and d.c.) and coulometric investigation of nitrobenzene has been made at various pH values in the presence of different concentrations of ethanol. Below pH 4.7, two waves are apparent but above this pH, the second wave does not appear. Coulometric evidence indicates that the first and second waves correspond to the four-and two-electron processes, respectively. The coulometric method was not applicable in sodium hydroxide and sodium acetate solutions. When the diffusion coefficients (from the diaphragm cell) are used in the Ilkovic equation, no reliable conclusions can be reached for the number of electrons involved in the reduction process in alkaline solutions. The a.c. polarographic method gives evidence for the formation of species such as: C6H5NO2H22+, C6H5NO2− and C6H5NO22−. Analysis of d.c. polarographic data by Delahay's treatment of irreversible waves, indicates that the number of electrons involved in the rate-determining step is 2. In sodium hydroxide solutions, however, the first main wave is split indicating more than one rate-determining step. The results presented in this paper indicate that the first wave in the reduction of nitrobenzene is a four-electron process at all pH values. The second wave, which appears below pH 4.7, corresponds to a two-electron process irrespective of wave heights. The difference in the a.c. polarographic behaviour in acid and alkaline solutions has given evidence for the formation of species like C6H5NO2H2, C6H5NO2−, and C6H5NO22.

The Ramberg-Osgood type constitutive law for creep suggested by Iyengar2 has been verified on high-density polyethylene. The time functions are evaluated from the experimental data of Scheweiker and Sidebottom3. It is found that the creep behaviour of the above material can be represented by the Ramberg-Osgood type law.

The Ramberg-Osgood relation which adequately describes the stress-strain curve of a strain-hardening material is extended to formulate the constitutive laws for creep. The constitutive laws which describe primary creep adequately are extended to secondary creep. The results are verified for the case of R.R. 59 at 200°C, Nimonic 80A and Nimonic 90 alloys at 750°C.

1. The polarographic behaviour of amino-acid complexes of zinc has been studied using seven amino acids as complexing agents. 2. The effect of varying the pH of the base solution and the concentration of amino-acid anion on the polarographic behaviour of zinc in these solutions have indi cated the formation of twelve amino-acid complexes. The stability constants could not be calculated due to the irreversible nature of the waves. 3. The effect of sodium hydroxide, sodium carbonate, and ammonia on the polarographic behaviour of zinc has been investigated. The results can be interpreted as due to the formation of mixed complexes in many systems. 4. Amino-acid base solutions have been found to be suitable for the polarographic estimation of zinc.

16-electrode phantoms are developed and studied with a simple instrumentation developed for Electrical Impedance Tomography. An analog instrumentation is developed with a sinusoidal current generator and signal conditioner circuit. Current generator is developed withmodified Howland constant current source fed by a voltage controlled oscillator and the signal conditioner circuit consisting of an instrumentation amplifier and a narrow band pass filter. Electronic hardware is connected to the electrodes through a DIP switch based multiplexer module. Phantoms with different electrode size and position are developed and the EIT forward problem is studied using the forward solver. A low frequency low magnitude sinusoidal current is injected to the surface electrodes surrounding the phantom boundary and the differential potential is measured by a digital multimeter. Comparing measured potential with the simulated data it is intended to reduce the measurement error and an optimum phantom geometry is suggested. Result shows that the common mode electrode reduces the common mode error of the EIT electronics and reduces the error potential in the measured data. Differential potential is reduced up to 67 mV at the voltage electrode pair opposite to the current electrodes. Offset potential is measured and subtracted from the measured data for further correction. It is noticed that the potential data pattern depends on the electrode width and the optimum electrode width is suggested. It is also observed that measured potential becomes acceptable with a 20 mm solution column above and below the electrode array level.

The accidental discovery of a cell with haploid number of diplochromosomes in squashes of colchicine-treated root tips led to a search for haploid anaphases in treated roots allowed to recover in water. No haploid anaphases were seen. Apart from the divisional stages of diploid and tetraploid nuclei, cells with two pro-, meta- and ana-phases were observed. The formation of distinct cell boundaries by each nucleus of an originally multinucleate cell indicates their potentialities in this direction.
