Electrochemical precipitation of cobalt(II) hydroxide from nitrate solutions containing organic molecules, such as glucose, fructose, lactose, glycerol, and citric acid, yields a new modification of cobalt (II) hydroxide (a = 3.09 +/- 0.03 Angstrom, c = 23.34 +/- 0.36 Angstrom) that is isostructural with cu-nickel hydroxide; precipitation in the absence of organic additives gives the stable, brucite-like, beta-CO (OH)(2). Reaction of [Ru2O(O(2)CR)(2)(MeCN)(4)(PPh(3))(2)](ClO4)(2) (1) with 1,2-diaminoethane (en) in MeOH-H2O yielded a mixture of products from which a diamagnetic ruthenium(II) complex [Ru(MeCN)(en)(2)(PPh(3))](ClO4)(2) (2) and a paramagnetic ruthenium(III) species [Ru(O(2)CR)(en)(2)(PPh(3))](BPh(4))(2) (3) (R = Ph, a; C6H4-p-Me, b; C6H4-p-OMe, c) were isolated and characterized. The crystal structure of complex 2, obtained by X-ray diffraction analysis, shows a cis arrangement of the unidentate ligands in this octahedral complex. Complex 3 displays an axial EPR spectrum. Complex 2 undergoes two successive irreversible metal-centred one-electron oxidation processes at 1.13 and 1.33 V vs SCE in MeCN-0.1 M [NBu(4)(n)]ClO4 at 50 mV s(-1). The mechanistic aspects of the core cleavage reactions in 1 are discussed.

Zinc oxide ceramic varistors with simplified compositions of ZnO+Bi2O3+Co3O4+M(2)O (M=K or Na) show nonlinearity coefficients (alpha) of 40-75. The electron paramagnetic resonance spectra and optical reflectance spectra show that there is a direct interdependence between the oxidation state of transition metals and the alkali ions. The X-ray photoelectron spectra indicate that the alkali ions preserve a higher oxidation state of cobalt, Co(III), in the grain boundary regions than in the grain interiors having more Co(II). Admittance spectroscopy shows that, while the nature of traps remains unaltered, the trap density increases with the concentration of alkali ions near the interface. The observed defect states are associated with the grain bulk than with the grain boundary interfaces, as indicated by the isothermal capacitance transient signals

Aqueous solutions of acetates and nitrates of zinc and cobalt have been spray decomposed to study the production of extended solid solutions in the ZnO-CoO system. Examination of the products of a variety of synthesis conditions indicates that up to 70% CoO may be retained in the solid solution in the wurzite phase, even though a comparison of the equilibrium solubility in the phase diagram might be expected to favor the formation of a rock-salt-based solid solution.

Fractionation of nuclear extracts from posterior silk glands of mulberry silkworm Bombyx mori. resolved the transcription factor TFIIIC into two components (designated here as TFIIIC and TFIIIC1) as in HeLa cell nuclear extracts. The reconstituted transcription of tRNA genes required the presence of both components. The affinity purified TFIIIC is a heteromeric complex comprising of five subunits ranging from 44 to 240 kDa. Of these, the 51-kDa subunit could be specifically crosslinked to the B box of tRNA(1)(Gly). Purified swTFIIIC binds to the B box sequences with an affinity in the same range as of yTFIIIC or hTFIIIC2. Although an histone acetyl transferase (HAT) activity was associated with the TFIIIC fractions during the initial stages of purification. the HAT activity, unlike the human TFIIIC preparations, was separated at the final DNA affinity step. The tRNA transcription from DNA template was independent of HAT activity but the repressed transcription from chromatin template could be partially restored by external supplementation of the dissociated HAT activity. This is the first report on the purification and characterization of TFIIIC from insect systems.

A new chromium(III)-Schiff base complex, [Cr(5-chlorosalprn)(H2O)(2)]ClO4, where salprn=N,N'-propylenebis(salicylideneimine) has been prepared and characterized by electrospray ionization mass spectrometric (ESIMS) analysis and other spectroscopic techniques. Single crystal X-ray data reveal that the complex assumes a trans-diaquo structure, [Cr(C17H18Cl2N2O4)]ClO4.H2O. The effect of phenyl ring substituents on the rate of formation of [O=Cr-V Schiff base](+) has been investigated. The bimolecular rate constant for the formation of O=Cr-V species by the [Cr(Schiff base)(H2O)(2)]ClO4, where the Schiff base=salprn, (1) and 5-chlorosalprn, (2) with PhOI was compared. In the case of (2) the rate was found to be faster by an order of magnitude at pH=4 compared to (1). The introduction of a chloro-substituent on the phenyl ring not only influences the rate of redox reactivity but also the pKa values of aquo ligands of the complexes, indicating the difference in the electronic environment around the metal ion in both (1) and (2).

We have investigated the microstructure of thin films grown by metal-organic chemical vapour deposition using a beta-diketonate complex of cobalt, namely cobalt (11) acetylacetonate. Films were deposited on three different substrates: Si(100), thermally oxidised silicon [SiO2/Si(100)] and glass at the same time. As-grown films were characterised by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, scanning tunnelling microscopy, atomic force microscopy and secondary ion mass spectrometry. Electrical resistivity was measured for all the films as a function of temperature. We found that films have very fine grains, resulting in high electrical resistivity Further, film microstructure has a strong dependence on the nature of the substrate and there is diffusion of silicon and oxygen into cobalt from the substrate. The formation of molecular films of 2,9,16,23-tetraamino metal phthalocyanines [TAM(II)Pc; M (II) = Co, Cu, and TAM(III)Pc; M = Fe] by spontaneous adsorption on gold and silver surfaces is described. The properties of these films have been investigated by cyclic voltammetry, impedance, and FT-Raman spectroscopy. The charge associated with Co(II) and Co(I) redox couple in voltammetric data leads to a coverage of (0.35+/-0.05) x 10(-10) mol cm(-2), suggesting that the tetraamino cobalt phthalocyanine is adsorbed as a monolayer with an almost complete coverage. The blocking behavior of the films toward oxygen and Fe(CN)(6)(3-/4-) redox couple have been followed by cyclic voltammetry and impedance measurements. This leads to an estimate of the coverage of about 85 % in the case of copper and the iron analogs. FT-Raman studies show characteristic bands around 236 cm(-1) revealing the interaction between the metal substrate and the nitrogen of the -NH2 group on the phthalocyanine molecules.

Thin films of cobalt oxide have been deposited on various substrates, such as glass, Si(100), SrTiO3(100), and LaAlO3(100), by low pressure metalorganic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) using cobalt(IL), acetylacetonate as the precursor. Films obtained in the temperature range 400-600 degreesC were uniform and highly crystalline having Co3O4 phase as revealed by x-ray diffraction. Under similar conditions of growth, highly oriented thin films of cobalt oxide grow on SrTiO3(100) and LaAlO3(100). The microstructure and the surface morphology of cobalt oxide films on glass, Si(100) and single crystalline substrates, SrTiO3(100) and LaAlO3(100) were studied by scanning electron microscopy. Optical properties of the films were studied by uv-visible-near IR spectrophotometry.

A cobalt oxalato-squarate of the formula [Co-2(C4O4)(C2O4)(C3N2H4)(2)], containing a ligated amine has been synthesized hydrothermally and its structure determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction. The compound crystallizes in the orthorhombic space group P2(1)2(1)2 with a = 18.3845(8) Angstrom, b = 5.7884(3) Angstrom, c = 7.2598(4) Angstrom, V = 772.56(7)Angstrom(3) and Z = 4. It has a layered structure where two-dimensional sheets are formed by the connectivity of the squarate and the oxalate units with the cobalt centres, with the ligating amine molecules protruding out from the layers. Cobalt (11) phthalocyanine (CoPc) molecules have been encapsulated within the supercage of zeolite-Y. The square-planar complex, being larger than the almost spherical cage, is forced to adopt a distorted geometry on encapsulation. A comparative spectroscopic and magnetic investigation of CoPc encapsulated in zeolite-Y and in the unencapsulated state is reported. These results supported by molecular modeling have been used to understand the nature and extent of the loss of planarity of CoPc on encapsulation. The encapsulated molecule is shown to be the trans-diprotonated species in which the center of inversion is lost due to distortions required to accommodate the square complex within the zeolite. Encapsulation also leads to an enhancement of the magnetic moment of the CoPc. This is shown to be a consequence of the nonplanar geometry of the encapsulated molecule resulting in an excited high-spin state being thermally accessible.
