A nonlinear suboptimal guidance law is presented in this paper for successful interception of ground targets by air-launched missiles and guided munitions. The main feature of this guidance law is that it accurately satisfies terminal impact angle constraints in both azimuth as well as elevation simultaneously. In addition, it is capable of hitting the target with high accuracy as well as minimizing the lateral acceleration demand. The guidance law is synthesized using recently developed model predictive static programming (MPSP). Performance of the proposed MPSP guidance is demonstrated using three-dimensional (3-D) nonlinear engagement dynamics by considering stationary, moving, and maneuvering targets. Effectiveness of the proposed guidance has also been verified by considering first. order autopilot lag as well as assuming inaccurate information about target maneuvers. Multiple munitions engagement results are presented as well. Moreover, comparison studies with respect to an augmented proportional navigation guidance (which does not impose impact angle constraints) as well as an explicit linear optimal guidance (which imposes the same impact angle constraints in 3-D) lead to the conclusion that the proposed MPSP guidance is superior to both. A large number of randomized simulation studies show that it also has a larger capture region.

Approximate closed-form expressions for the propagation characteristics of a microstrip line with a symmetrical aperture in its ground plane are reported in this article. Well-known expressions for the characteristic impedance of a regular microstrip line have been modified to incorporate the effect of this aperture. The accuracy of these expressions for various values of substrate thickness, permittivity and line width has been studied in detail by fullwave simulations. This has been further verified by measurements. These expressions are easier to compute and find immense use in the design of broadband filters, tight couplers, power dividers, transformers, delay lines, and matching circuits. A broadband filter with aperture in ground plane is demonstrated in this article. (c) 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Int J RF and Microwave CAE, 2012.

A new six-component accelerometer force balance is developed and used in the HST2 shock tunnel of Indian Institute of Science. Aerodynamic forces and moments for a hypersonic slender body measured using this balance system at a free stream Mach number of 5.75 and Reynolds number of 1.5 million and stagnation enthalpy of 1.5 and 2 MJ/kg are presented. These measured values compare well with the theoretical values estimated using modified Newtonian theory.

This paper presents the results of seismic response analysis of layered ground in Ahmedabad City during the earthquake in Bhuj on 26(th) January 2001. An attempt has been made to understand the reasons for the failure of multistoreyed buildings founded on soft alluvial deposits in Ahmedabad. Standard Penetration test at a site very close to the Sabarmati river belt was carried out for geotechnical investigations. The program SHAKE91, widely used in the field of earthquake engineering for computing the seismic response of horizontally layered soil deposits, was used to analyse the soil profile at the selected site considering the ground as one dimensional layered elastic system. The ground accelerations recorded at the ground floor of the Regional Passport Staff Quarters building, which is very close to the investigated site, was used as input motion. Also, Finite Element Analysis was carried out for different configurations of multistorey building frames for evaluating their natural frequencies and is compared with the predominant frequency of the layered soil system. The results reveal that the varying degree of damage to multistorey buildings in the close proximity of Sabarmati river area was essentially due to the large amplification of the ground and the near resonance condition.

The photoemission from quantum wires and dots of effective mass superlattices of optoelectronic materials was investigated on the basis of newly formulated electron energy spectra, in the presence of external light waves, which controls the transport properties of ultra-small electronic devices under intense radiation. The effect of magnetic quantization on the photoemission from the aforementioned superlattices, together with quantum well superlattices under magnetic quantization, has also been investigated in this regard. It appears, taking HgTe/Hg1-xCdxTe and InxGa1-xAs/InP effective mass superlattices, that the photoemission from these quantized structures is enhanced with increasing photon energy in quantized steps and shows oscillatory dependences with the increasing carrier concentration. In addition, the photoemission decreases with increasing light intensity and wavelength as well as with increasing thickness exhibiting oscillatory spikes. The strong dependence of the photoemission on the light intensity reflects the direct signature of light waves on the carrier energy spectra. The content of this paper finds six different applications in the fields of low dimensional systems in general.

An attempt is made to study the two dimensional (2D) effective electron mass (EEM) in quantum wells (Qws), inversion layers (ILs) and NIPI superlattices of Kane type semiconductors in the presence of strong external photoexcitation on the basis of a newly formulated electron dispersion laws within the framework of k.p. formalism. It has been found, taking InAs and InSb as examples, that the EEM in Qws, ILs and superlattices increases with increasing concentration, light intensity and wavelength of the incident light waves, respectively and the numerical magnitudes in each case is band structure dependent. The EEM in ILs is quantum number dependent exhibiting quantum jumps for specified values of the surface electric field and in NIPI superlattices; the same is the function of Fermi energy and the subband index characterizing such 2D structures. The appearance of the humps of the respective curves is due to the redistribution of the electrons among the quantized energy levels when the quantum numbers corresponding to the highest occupied level changes from one fixed value to the others. Although the EEM varies in various manners with all the variables as evident from all the curves, the rates of variations totally depend on the specific dispersion relation of the particular 2D structure. Under certain limiting conditions, all the results as derived in this paper get transformed into well known formulas of the EEM and the electron statistics in the absence of external photo-excitation and thus confirming the compatibility test. The results of this paper find three applications in the field of microstructures. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Distinctions between isobaric residues have been a major challenge in mass spectrometric peptide sequencing. Here, we propose a methodology for distinction among isobaric leucine, isoleucine, and hydroxyproline, a commonly found post-translationally modified amino acid with a nominal mass of 113 Da, through a combined electron transfer dissociation-collision-induced dissociation approach. While the absence of c and z(center dot) ions, corresponding to the Yyy-Xxx (Xxx = Leu, Ile, or Hyp) segment, is indicative of the presence of hydroxyproline, loss of isopropyl (Delta m = 43 Da) or ethyl radicals (Delta m = 29 Da), through collisional activation of z(center dot) radical ions, are characteristic of leucine or isoleucine, respectively. Radical migration processes permit distinctions even in cases where the specific e ions, corresponding to the Yyy-Leu or -Ile segments, are absent or of low intensity. This tandem mass spectrometric (MSn) method has been successfully implemented in a liquid chromatography MSn platform to determine the identity of 23 different isobaric residues from a mixture of five different peptides. The approach is convenient for distinction of isobaric residues from any crude peptide mixture, typically encountered in natural peptide libraries or proteomic analysis.

An experimental study on liquid mass distribution in effervescent sprays using water and air as working fluids is presented in this paper. Optical patternation and techniques of image processing are employed for analyzing the spray. The flow regime inside the effervescent atomizer largely dictates the mass distribution patterns. The patterns are seen to vary from concentrated, poorly atomized liquid lumps to uniformly distributed, fine droplets as the flow regime changes from bubbly flow to annular flow. A large variety of instantaneous spray patterns are observed in bubbly flow regime indicating a highly unsteady atomization process. However, relatively better consistency in spray patterns is observed at higher gas flow rates. Thus, the degree of unsteadiness gradually diminishes as gas flow rate is increased. The axial evolution of the spray in annular mode shows good mixing of liquid and gas across the interface.

Motivated by experiments on Josephson junction arrays, and cold atoms in an optical lattice in a synthetic magnetic field, we study the ``fully frustrated'' Bose-Hubbard model with half a magnetic flux quantum per plaquette. We obtain the phase diagram of this model on a two-leg ladder at integer filling via the density matrix renormalization group approach, complemented by Monte Carlo simulations on an effective classical XY model. The ground state at intermediate correlations is consistently shown to be a chiral Mott insulator (CMI) with a gap to all excitations and staggered loop currents which spontaneously break time-reversal symmetry. We characterize the CMI state as a vortex supersolid or an indirect exciton condensate, and discuss various experimental implications.

The vertical uplift resistance for a group of two horizontal coaxial rigid strip anchors embedded in clay under undrained condition has been determined by using the upper bound theorem of limit analysis in combination with finite elements. An increase of undrained shear strength of soil mass with depth has been incorporated. The uplift factor F-c gamma has been computed. As compared to a single isolated anchor, a group of two anchors provides greater magnitude of the uplift resistance. For a given embedment ratio, the group of two anchors generates almost the maximum uplift resistance when the upper anchor is located midway between ground surface and the lower anchor. For a given embedment ratio, F-c gamma increases linearly with an increase in the normalized unit weight of soil mass up to a certain value before attaining a certain maximum magnitude; the maximum value of F-c gamma increases with an increase in embedment ratio. Grouping and coordination tactics for ground attack missions by a heterogeneous mix of reconnaissance, enemy suppression, and attack unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) is presented. Dubins' paths are used to determine the optimal number of attack UAVs and their positional and heading freedoms, as functions of weapon seeker range and field of view. A generic battlefield scenario with layered defense is created and the tactics are evaluated on a Group Flyer simulation platform for both nominal and off-nominal conditions.
