We report the tuning of oxygen content of La0.5Ca0.5MnO3-y and its effect on electrical transport and magnetic properties. A small reduction of oxygen content leads to a decrease in sample resistivity, which is more dramatic at low temperatures. No significant change is seen to occur in the magnetic properties for this case. Further reduction in the oxygen content increases the resistivity remarkably, as compared to the as-prepared sample. The amplitude of the ferromagnetic (FM) transition at 225 K decreases, and the antiferromagnetic (AFM) transition at 130 K disappears. For samples with y=0.17, insulator-metal transition and paramagnetic-ferromagnetic transition occur around 167 K. The results are explained in terms of the effect of oxygen vacancies on the coexistence of the metallic FM phase and the insulating charge ordered AFM phase.

In this work, the synthesis of an oligothiophene having a donor acceptor donor (D-A-D) chromophore with hydrogen bonding groups is described. The D-A-D molecule was demonstrated to self-organize via intermolecular H-bonding between barbituric acid units. Interactions between the oligothiophene subunits were also found to be important, affording nanoribbons that could be observed by atomic force and transmission electron microscopy. The applicability of the oligothiophene for organic electronic applications was investigated by fabricating organic field-effect transistors (OFETs) and organic photovoltaic devices. The OFET measurements yielded p-type mobility of 7 x 10(-7) cm(2)/(Vs), and when blended with C(60)-PCBM, the photovoltaic efficiency was observed to be 0.18%.

The equilibrium solubilities of dihydroxy benzene isomers (resorcinol and pyrocatechol) and its mixture were experimentally determined at different temperatures (308, 318, 328, and 338 K) in the pressure range of 9.8-16.2 MPa. In the ternary system, the solubilities of pyrocatechol increased while the solubilities of resorcinol decreased relative to their binary solubilities. A new association model was developed based on the concept of formation of solvate complex molecules to correlate the solubility of the solid for mixed solids in supercritical carbon dioxide (SCCO(2)). The model equation relates the solubility of solute in terms of the cosolute composition, temperature, pressure and density of SCCO(2). The proposed model correlated the solubilities of sixteen solid systems taken from the literature and current experimental data with an average absolute relative deviation (AARD) of around 4%. We have investigated the effect of biaxial strain on local electrical/electronic properties in thin films of La0.7Ca0.3MnO3 with varying degrees of biaxial strain in them. The local electrical properties were investigated as a function of temperature by scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS) and scanning tunneling potentiometry (STP), along with the bulk probe like conductance fluctuations. The results indicate a positive correlation between the lattice mismatch biaxial strain and the local electrical/electronic inhomogenities observed in the strained sample. This is plausible since the crystal structure of the manganites interfere rather strongly with the magnetic/electronic degrees of freedom. Thus even a small imbalance (biaxial strain) can induce significant changes in the electrical properties of the system.

Novel gold nanoparticles bearing cationic single-chain, double-chain, and cholesterol based amphiphilic units have been synthesized. These nanoparticles represent size-stable entities in which various cationic lipids have been immobilized through their thiol group onto the gold nanoparticle core. The resulting colloids have been characterized by UV-vis, (1)H NMR, FT-IR spectroscopy, and transmission electron microscopy. The average size of the resultant nanoparticles could be controlled by the relative bulkiness of the capping agent. Thus, the average diameters of the nanoparticles formed from the cationic single-chain, double-chain, and cholesterol based thiolate-coated materials were 5.9,2.9, and 2.04 nm, respectively. We also examined the interaction of these cationic gold nanoparticles with vesicular membranes generated from dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine (DPPC) lipid suspensions. Nanoparticle doped DPPC vesicular suspensions displayed a characteristic surface plasmon band in their UV-vis spectra. Inclusion of nanoparticles in vesicular suspensions led to increases in the aggregate diameters, as evidenced from dynamic light scattering. Differential scanning calorimetric examination indicated that incorporation of single-chain, double-chain, and cholesteryl-linked cationic nanoparticles exert variable effects on the DPPC melting transitions. While increased doping of single-chain nanoparticles in DPPC resulted in the phases that melt at higher temperatures, inclusion of an incremental amount of double-chain nanoparticles caused the lowering of the melting temperature of DPPC. On the other hand, the cationic cholesteryl nanoparticle interacted with DPPC in membranes in a manner somewhat analogous to that of cholesterol itself and caused broadening of the DPPC melting transition.

Copolymers of o-lm-toluidine with o-lm-amino benzoic acid have been synthesized by chemical polymerization using inverse emulsion pathway and characterized by a number of techniques including UV-Vis, FT-IR, FT Raman, EPR and NMR spectroscopies, thermal analysis and conductivity. The solubility of the copolymers in organic solvents increases with increase in the amount of amino benzoic acid in the feed. The copolymers synthesized at room temperature show relatively higher conductivity and are obtained in higher yield compared to those synthesized at 0 and 60 degreesC. The spectral studies have revealed restricted conjugation along the polymer chain. The effect of -COOH substituent on the copolymer structure is discussed. Oligoarabinofuranoside-containing glycolipids relevant to mycobacterial cell wall components were synthesized in order to understand the functional roles of such glycolipids. A series of linear tetra-, hexa-, octa-and a branched heptasaccharide oligoarabinofuranosides, with 1 -> 2 and 1 -> 5 a-linkages between the furanoside residues, were synthesized by chemical methods from readily available monomer building blocks. Upon the synthesis of glycolipids, constituted with a double alkyl chain-substituted sn-glycerol core and oligosaccharide fragments, biological studies were performed to identify the effect of synthetic glycolipids on the biofilm formation and sliding motilities of Mycobacterium smegmatis. Synthetic glycolipids and arabinofuranosides displayed an inhibitory effect on the growth profile, but mostly on the biofilm formation and maturation. Similarly, synthetic compounds also influenced the sliding motility of the bacteria. Further, biophysical studies were undertaken, so as to identify the interactions of the glycolipids with a pulmonary surfactant protein, namely surfactant protein A (SP-A), with the aid of the surface plasmon resonance technique. Specificities of each glycolipid interacting with SP-A were thus evaluated. From this study, glycolipids were found to exhibit higher apparent association constants than the corresponding oligosaccharide portion alone, without the double alkyl group-substituted glycerol core.

Palladium and platinum dichloride complexes of a series of symmetrically and unsymmetrically substituted 25,26;27,28-dibridged p-tert-butyl-calix[4]arene bisphosphites in which two proximal phenolic oxygen atoms of p-tert-butyl-or p-H-calix[4]arene are connected to a P(OR) ( R = substituted phenyl) moiety have been synthesized. The palladium dichloride complexes of calix[4]arene bisphosphites bearing sterically bulky aryl substituents undergo cyclometalation by C-C or C-H bond scission. An example of cycloplatinated complex is also reported. The complexes have been characterized by NMR spectroscopic and single crystal X-ray diffraction studies. During crystallization of the palladium dichloride complex of a symmetrically substituted calix[4]arene bisphosphite in dichloromethane, insertion of oxygen occurs into the Pd-P bond to give a P,O-coordinated palladium dichloride complex. The calix[4]arene framework in these bisphosphites and their metal complexes adopt distorted cone conformation; the cone conformation is more flattened in the metal complexes than in the free calix[4]arene bisphosphites. Some of these cyclometalated complexes proved to be active catalysts for Heck and Suzuki C-C cross-coupling reactions but, on an average, the yields are only modest. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. Yttrium oxide (Y(2)O(3)) thin films were deposited by microwave electron cyclotron resonance (ECR) plasma assisted metal organic chemical vapour deposition (MOCVD) process using indigenously developed metal organic precursors Yttrium 2,7,7-trimethyl-3,5-octanedionates, commonly known as Y(tod)(3) which were synthesized by an ultrasound method. A series of thin films were deposited by varying the oxygen flow rate from 1-9 sccm, keeping all other parameters constant. The deposited coatings were characterized by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, glancing angle X-ray diffraction and infrared spectroscopy. Thickness and roughness for the films were measured by stylus profilometry. Optical properties of the coatings were studied by the spectroscopic ellipsometry. Hardness and elastic modulus of the films were measured by nanoindentation technique. Being that microwave ECR CVD process is operating-pressure-sensitive, optimum oxygen activity is very essential for a fixed flow rate of precursor, in order to get a single phase cubic yttrium oxide in the films. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first effort that describes the use of Y(tod)(3) precursor for deposition of Y(2)O(3) films using plasma assisted CVD process.

Synthesis and structure of new (Bi, La)(3)MSb(2)O(11) phases (M = Cr, Mn, Fe) are reported in conjunction with their magnetic and photocatalytic properties. XRD refinements reflect that Bi(3)CrSb(2)O(11), Bi(2)LaCrSb(2)O(11), Bi(2)LaMnSb(2)O(11) and Bi(2)LaFeSb(2)O(11) adopt KSbO(3)-type structure (space group, Pn (3) over bar). The structure can be described through three interpenetrating networks where the first is the (M/Sb)O(6) octahedral network and other two are the identical networks having Bi(6)O(4) composition. The magnetic measurements on Bi(2)LaCrSb(2)O(11) and Bi(2)LaMnSb(2)O(11) show paramagnetic behaviour with magnetic moments close to the expected spin only magnetic moments of Cr(+3) and Mn(+3). The UV-Visible diffuse reflectance spectra are broad and indicate that these materials possess a bandgap of similar to 2 eV. The photocatalytic activity of these materials has been investigated by degrading Malachite Green (MG) under exposure to UV light.

The potential energy surfaces of both neutral and dianionic SnC(2)P(2)R(2) (R=H, tBu) ring systems have been explored at the B3PW91/LANL2DZ (Sn) and 6-311 + G* (other atoms) level. In the neutral isomers the global minimum is a nido structure in which a 1,2-diphosphocyclobutadiene ring (1,2-DPCB) is capped by the Sn. Interestingly, the structure established by Xray diffraction analysis, for R=tBu, is a 1,3-DPCB ring capped by Sn and it is 2.4 kcal mol(-1) higher in energy than the 1,2-DPCB ring isomer. This is possibly related to the kinetic stability of the 1,3-DPCB ring, which might originate from the synthetic precursor ZrCp(2)tBu(2)C(2)P(2). In the case of the dianionic isomers we observe only a 6 pi-electron aromatic structure as the global minimum, similarly to the cases of our previously reported results with other types of heterodiphospholes.([1,4,19]) The existence of large numbers of cluster-type isomers in neutral and 6 pi-planar structures in the dianions SnC(2)P(2)R(2)(2-) (R=H, tBu) is due to 3D aromaticity in neutral clusters and to 2D pi aromaticity of the dianionic rings. Relative energies of positional isomers mainly depend on: 1) the valency and coordination number of the Sn centre, 2) individual bond strengths, and 3) the steric effect of tBu groups. A comparison of neutral stannadiphospholes with other structurally related C(5)H(5)(+) analogues indicates that Sn might be a better isolobal analogue to P(+) than to BH or CH(+). The variation in global minima in these C(5)H(5)(+) analogues is due to characteristic features such as 1) the different valencies of C, B, P and Sn, 2) the electron deficiency of B, 3) weaker p pi-p pi bonding by P and Sn atoms, and 4) the tendency of electropositive elements to donate electrons to nido clusters. Unlike the C5H5+ systems, all C(5)H(5)(-) analogues have 6 pi-planar aromatic structures as global minima. The differences in the relative ordering of the positional isomers and ligating properties are significant and depend on 1) the nature of the pi orbitals involved, and 2) effective overlap of orbitals.
