Beneficial effects of carbon grafting into the iron active material for rechargeable alkaline-iron-electrodes with and without Bi2S3 additive is probed by in situ X-ray diffraction in conjunction with Extended X-ray Absorption Fine Structure (EXAFS) and electrochemistry. EXAFS data unravel that the composition of pristine active material (PAM) for iron electrodes comprises 87% of magnetite and 13% of alpha-iron while carbon-grafted active material comprises 60% of magnetite and 40% of alpha-iron. In situ XRD patterns are recorded using a specially designed electrochemical cell. XRD data reflect that magnetite present in PAM iron electrode, without bismuth sulfide additive, is not reduced during charging while PAM iron electrode with bismuth sulfide additive is partially reduced to alpha-Fe/Fe(OH)(2). Interestingly, carbon-grafted-iron electrodes with bismuth sulfide exhibit complete conversion of active material to alpha-Fe/Fe(OH)2. The ameliorating effect of carbon grafting is substantiated by kinetic parameters obtained from steady-state potentiostatic polarization and Tafel plots. The mechanism for iron-electrode charge - discharge reactions are discussed in the light of the potential - pH diagrams for Fe - H2O, S - H2O and FeSads - H2O systems and it is surmised that carbon grafting into iron active material promotes its electrochemical utilization. Nanocrystalline Mn0.4Zn0.6SmxGdyFe2-(x+y)O4 (x = y = 0.01, 0.02, 0.03, 0.04 and 0.05) were synthesized by combustion route. The detailed structural studies were carried out through X-ray diffractometer (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The results confirms the formation of mixed spine phase with cubic structure due to the distortion created with co-dopants substitution at Fe site in Mn-Zn ferrite lattice. Further, the crystallite size increases with an increase of Sm3+-Gd3+ ions concentration while lattice parameter and lattice strain decreases. Furthermore, the effect of Sm-Gd co-doping in Mn-Zn ferrite on the room temperature electrical (dielectric studies) studies were carried out in the wide frequency range 1 GHz-5 GHz. The magnetic studies were carried out using vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM) under applied magnetic field of 1.5T and also room temperature electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectra's were recorded. From the results of dielectric studies, it shows that the real and imaginary part of permittivities are increasing with variation of Gd3+ and Sm3+ concentration. The magnetic studies reveal the decrease of remnant, saturation magnetization and coercivity with increasing of Sm3+-Gd3+ ion concentration. The g-value, peak-to-peak line width and spin concentration evaluated from EPR spectra correlated with cations occupancy. The electromagnetic properties clearly indicate that these materials are the good candidates which are useful at L and C band frequency. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The potential of textured hydrophobic surfaces to provide substantial drag reduction has been attributed to the presence of air bubbles trapped on the surface cavities. In this paper, we present results on water flow past a textured hydrophobic surface, while systematically varying the absolute pressure close to the surface. Trapped air bubbles on the surface are directly visualized, along with simultaneous pressure drop measurements across the surface in a microchannel configuration. We find that varying the absolute pressure within the channel greatly influences the trapped air bubble behavior, causing a consequent effect on the pressure drop (drag). When the absolute pressure within the channel is maintained below atmospheric pressure, we find that the air bubbles grow in size, merge and eventually detach from the surface. This growth and subsequent merging of the air bubbles leads to a substantial increase in the pressure drop. On the other hand, a pressure above the atmospheric pressure within the channel leads to gradual shrinkage and eventual disappearance of trapped air bubbles. We find that in this case, air bubbles do cause reduction in the pressure drop with the minimum pressure drop (or maximum drag reduction) occurring when the bubbles are flush with the surface. These results show that the trapped air bubble dynamics and the pressure drop across a textured hydrophobic microchannel are very significantly dependent on the absolute pressure within the channel. The results obtained hold important implications toward achieving sustained drag reduction in microfluidic applications.

The growth of Nb3Sn by bronze technique on single crystals and deformed Nb is studied. The grain boundary diffusion-controlled growth rate is found to be higher for Nb-(0 1 3) than Nb-(0 1 1) because of smaller grain size of Nb3Sn. The difference in grain size is explained with the help of surface energies leading to different nucleation barrier. Significantly finer grains and higher growth rate of the product phase is found for rolled Nb because of available defects acting as potential nucleation sites.

The influence of Pt layer thickness on the fracture behavior of PtNiAl bond coats was studied in situ using clamped micro-beam bend tests inside a scanning electron microscope (SEM). Clamped beam bending is a fairly well established micro-scale fracture test geometry that has been previously used in determination of fracture toughness of Si and PtNiAl bond coats. The increasing amount of Pt in the bond coat matrix was accompanied by several other microstructural changes such as an increase in the volume fraction of alpha-Cr precipitate particles in the coating as well as a marginal decrease in the grain size of the matrix. In addition, Pt alters the defect chemistry of the B2-NiAl structure, directly affecting its elastic properties. A strong correlation was found between the fracture toughness and the initial Pt layer thickness associated with the bond coat. As the Pt layer thickness was increased from 0 to 5 mu m, resulting in increasing Pt concentration from 0 to 14.2 at.% in the B2-NiAl matrix and changing alpha-Cr precipitate fraction, the initiation fracture toughness (K-IC) was seen to rise from 6.4 to 8.5 MPa.m(1/2). R-curve behavior was observed in these coatings, with K-IC doubling for a crack propagation length of 2.5 mu m. The reasons for the toughening are analyzed to be a combination of material's microstructure (crack kinking and bridging due to the precipitates) as well as size effects, as the crack approaches closer to the free surface in a micro-scale sample.

The effect of Radio Frequency (RF) power on the properties of magnetron sputtered Al doped ZnO thin films and the related sensor properties are investigated. A series of 2 wt% Al doped ZnO; Zn0.98Al0.02O (AZO) thin films prepared with magnetron sputtering at different RF powers, are examined. The structural results reveal a good adhesive nature of thin films with quartz substrates as well as increasing thickness of the films with increasing RF power. Besides, the increasing RF power is found to improve the crystallinity and grain growth as confirmed by X-ray diffraction. On the other hand, the optical transmittance is significantly influenced by the RF power, where the transparency values achieved are higher than 82% for all the AZO thin films and the estimated optical band gap energy is found to decrease with RF power due to an increase in the crystallite size as well as the film thickness. In addition, the defect induced luminescence at low temperature (77 K) and room temperature (300 K) was studied through photoluminescence spectroscopy, it is found that the defect density of electronic states of the Al3+ ion increases with an increase of RF power due to the increase in the thickness of the film and the crystallite size. The gas sensing behavior of AZO films was studied for NO2 at 350 degrees C. The AZO film shows a good response towards NO2 gas and also a good relationship between the response and the NO2 concentration, which is modeled using an empirical formula. The sensing mechanism of NO2 is discussed.

A metastable nano-scale disordered precipitate with orthorhombic symmetry has been identified using high resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy. The phase, termed O', is metastable, formed by a shuffle mechanism involving a {110}<1<(1)over bar>0> transverse phonon wave in samples of Ti-26Nb-2Zr (at.%) quenched from the beta phase. The addition of 2% Zr to Ti-26Nb appears to suppress significantly the stability of both the {11 (2) over bar}<111> shear and 2/3 <111> longitudinal phonon wave but promotes the {110}<1<(1)over bar>0> transverse shuffle. This results in the nano-size O' phase being homogeneously formed in the parent beta phase matrix rather than the massive alpha `' phase. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Vanadium Oxide has been a frontrunner in the field of oxide electronics because of its metal-insulator transition (MIT). The interplay of different structures of VO2 has played a crucial role in deciding the magnitude of the first order MIT. Substitution doping has been found to introduce different polymorphs of VO2. Hence the role of substitution doping in stabilizing the competing phases of VO2 in the thin film form remains underexplored. Consequently there have been reports both discounting and approving such a stabilization of competing phases in VO2. It is reported in the literature that the bandwidth of the hysteresis and transition temperature of VO2 can be tuned by substitutional doping of VO2 with W. In this work, we have adopted a novel technique called, Ultrasonic Nebulized Spray Pyrolysis of Aqueous Combustion Mixture (UNSPACM) to deposit VO2 and W- doped VO2 as thin films. XRD and Raman spectroscopy were used to investigate the role of tungsten on the structure of VO2 thin films. Morphology of the thin films was found to be consisting of globular and porous nanoparticles of size similar to 20nm. Transition temperature decreased with the addition of W. We found that for 2.0 at % W doping in VO2, the transition temperature has reduced from 68 degrees C to 25 degrees C. It is noted that W-doping in the process of reducing the transition temperature, alters the local structure and also increases room temperature carrier concentration. (c) 2016 Author(s).
