A robust suboptimal reentry guidance scheme is presented for a reusable launch vehicle using the recently developed, computationally efficient model predictive static programming. The formulation uses the nonlinear vehicle dynamics with a spherical and rotating Earth, hard constraints for desired terminal conditions, and an innovative cost function having several components with associated weighting factors that can account for path and control constraints in a soft constraint manner, thereby leading to smooth solutions of the guidance parameters. The proposed guidance essentially shapes the trajectory of the vehicle by computing the necessary angle of attack and bank angle that the vehicle should execute. The path constraints are the structural load constraint, thermal load constraint, bounds on the angle of attack, and bounds on the bank angle. In addition, the terminal constraints include the three-dimensional position and velocity vector components at the end of the reentry. Whereas the angle-of-attack command is generated directly, the bank angle command is generated by first generating the required heading angle history and then using it in a dynamic inversion loop considering the heading angle dynamics. Such a two-loop synthesis of bank angle leads to better management of the vehicle trajectory and avoids mathematical complexity as well. Moreover, all bank angle maneuvers have been confined to the middle of the trajectory and the vehicle ends the reentry segment with near-zero bank angle, which is quite desirable. It has also been demonstrated that the proposed guidance has sufficient robustness for state perturbations as well as parametric uncertainties in the model.

This paper presents a second order sliding mode observer (SOSMO) design for discrete time uncertain linear multi-output system. The design procedure is effective for both matched and unmatched bounded uncertainties and/or disturbances. A second order sliding function and corresponding sliding manifold for discrete time system are defined similar to the lines of continuous time counterpart. A boundary layer concept is employed to avoid switching across the defined sliding manifold and the sliding trajectory is confined to a boundary layer once it converges to it. The condition for existence of convergent quasi-sliding mode (QSM) is derived. The observer estimation errors satisfying given stability conditions converge to an ultimate finite bound (within the specified boundary layer) with thickness O(T-2) where T is the sampling period. A relation between sliding mode gain and boundary layer is established for the existence of second order discrete sliding motion. The design strategy is very simple to apply and is demonstrated for three examples with different class of disturbances (matched and unmatched) to show the effectiveness of the design. Simulation results to show the robustness with respect to the measurement noise are given for SOSMO and the performance is compared with pseudo-linear Kalman filter (PLKF). We report the design and synthesis of an amide functionalized microporous organic polymer (Am-MOP) prepared from trimesic acid and p-phenylenediamine using thionyl chloride as a reagent. Polar amide (CONH) functional groups act as a linking unit between the node and spacer and constitute the pore wall of the continuous polymeric network. The strong covalent bonds between the building blocks (trimesic acid and p-phenylenediamine) through amide bond linkages provide high thermal and chemical stability to Am-MOP. The presence of a highly polar pore surface allows selective CO2 uptake at 195 K over other gases such as N-2, Ar, and O-2. The CO2 molecule interacts with amide functional groups via Lewis acid base type interactions as demonstrated through DFT calculations. Furthermore, for the first time Am-MOP with basic functional groups has been exploited for the Knoevenagel condensation reaction between aldehydes and active methylene compounds. Availability of a large number of catalytic sites per volume and confined microporosity gives enhanced catalytic efficiency and high selectivity for small substrate molecules.

Multi-species mating aggregations are crowded environments within which mate recognition must occur. Mating aggregations of fig wasps can consist of thousands of individuals of many species that attain sexual maturity simultaneously and mate in the same microenvironment, i.e, in syntopy, within the close confines of an enclosed globular inflorescence called a syconium - a system that has many signalling constraints such as darkness and crowding. All wasps develop within individual galled flowers. Since mating mostly occurs when females are still confined within their galls,, male wasps have the additional burden of detecting conspecific females that are ``hidden'' behind barriers consisting of gall walls. In Ficus racemosa, we investigated signals used by pollinating fig wasp males to differentiate conspecific females from females of other syntopic fig wasp species. Male Ceratosolen fusciceps could detect conspecific females using cues from galls containing females, empty galls, as well as cues from gall volatiles and gall surface hydrocarbons. In many figs, syconia are pollinated by single foundress wasps, leading to high levels of wasp inbreeding due to sibmating. In F. racemosa, as most syconia contain many foundresses, we expected male pollinators to prefer non-sib females to female siblings to reduce inbreeding. We used galls containing females from non-natal figs as a proxy for non-sibs and those from natal figs as a proxy for sibling females. We found that males preferred galls of female pollinators from natal figs. However, males were undecided when given a choice between galls containing non-pollinator females from natal syconia and pollinator females from non-natal syconia, suggesting olfactory imprinting by the natal syconial environment. We report experimental evidence of a remarkable spontaneous time-reversal symmetry breaking in two-dimensional electron systems formed by atomically confined doping of phosphorus (P) atoms inside bulk crystalline silicon (Si) and germanium (Ge). Weak localization corrections to the conductivity and the universal conductance fluctuations were both found to decrease rapidly with decreasing doping in the Si: P and Ge: P delta layers, suggesting an effect driven by Coulomb interactions. In-plane magnetotransport measurements indicate the presence of intrinsic local spin fluctuations at low doping, providing a microscopic mechanism for spontaneous lifting of the time-reversal symmetry. Our experiments suggest the emergence of a new many-body quantum state when two-dimensional electrons are confined to narrow half-filled impurity bands.

Vortex reconnections plays an important role in the turbulent flows associated with the superfluids. To understand the dynamics, we examine the reconnections of vortex rings in the superfluids of dilute atomic gases confined in trapping potentials using Gross-Petaevskii equation. Further more we study the reconnection dynamics of coreless vortex rings, where one of the species can act as a tracer.

We study the nonequilibrium dynamics of quenching through a quantum critical point in topological systems, focusing on one of their defining features: ground-state degeneracies and associated topological sectors. We present the notion of ``topological blocking,'' experienced by the dynamics due to a mismatch in degeneracies between two phases, and we argue that the dynamic evolution of the quench depends strongly on the topological sector being probed. We demonstrate this interplay between quench and topology in models stemming from two extensively studied systems, the transverse Ising chain and the Kitaev honeycomb model. Through nonlocal maps of each of these systems, we effectively study spinless fermionic p-wave paired topological superconductors. Confining the systems to ring and toroidal geometries, respectively, enables us to cleanly address degeneracies, subtle issues of fermion occupation and parity, and mismatches between topological sectors. We show that various features of the quench, which are related to Kibble-Zurek physics, are sensitive to the topological sector being probed, in particular, the overlap between the time-evolved initial ground state and an appropriate low-energy state of the final Hamiltonian. While most of our study is confined to translationally invariant systems, where momentum is a convenient quantum number, we briefly consider the effect of disorder and illustrate how this can influence the quench in a qualitatively different way depending on the topological sector considered.

Investigations of two-dimensional electron systems (2DES) have been achieved with two model experimental systems, covering two distinct, non-overlapping regimes of the 2DES phase diagram, namely the quantum liquid phase in semiconducting heterostructures and the classical phases observed in electrons confined above the surface of liquid helium. Multielectron bubbles in liquid helium offer an exciting possibility to bridge this gap in the phase diagram, as well as to study the properties of electrons on curved flexible surfaces. However, this approach has been limited because all experimental studies have so far been transient in nature. Here we demonstrate that it is possible to trap and manipulate multielectron bubbles in a conventional Paul trap for several hundreds of milliseconds, enabling reliable measurements of their physical properties and thereby gaining valuable insight to various aspects of curved 2DES that were previously unexplored.

The effect of silver nanoparticles (sNP) on the demixing and the evolution of morphology in off-critical blends of 90/10 and 10/90 (wt/wt) PS/PVME polystyrene/poly(vinyl methyl ether)] was probed here using shear rheology and optical microscopy. The faster component (PVME) has a higher molecular weight (80 kDa) than the slower component (PS, 35 kDa), which makes this system quite interesting to study with respect to the evolving morphology, as the blends transit through the binodal and the spinodal envelopes. An unusual demixing behavior was observed in both PVME rich and PS rich blends. Temperature modulated differential scanning calorimetry measurements showed that the T-g value for the blends with sNP was slightly lower than that of the neat blends. A decreased volume of cooperativity at T-g suggests confined segmental dynamics in the presence of sNP. Although, the addition of sNP had no influence on the thermodynamic demixing temperature, it significantly altered the elasticity of the minor component during the transition of the blend from the homogeneous to the heterogeneous state. This is manifested from energetically driven localization of the sNP in the PVME phase during demixing. As a direct consequence of this, the formation of the microstructures upon demixing was observed to be delayed in the presence of sNP. Interestingly, in the intermediate quench depth, the higher viscoelastic phase evolved as an interconnected network, which subsequently coarsened into discrete droplets in the late stages for the 90/10 PS/PVME blends. Similar observations were made for 10/90 PS/PVME blends where threads of PVME appeared at deeper quench depths in the presence of sNP. The interconnected network formation of the minor phase (here PVME), which is also the faster component in the blend, was different from the usual demixing behavior.

Catalytic asymmetric desymmetrization represents an excellent strategy for accessing highly functionalized chiral building blocks. However, the application of desymmetrization for the synthesis of enantio-enriched cyclopentane derivatives remained limited, when compared to chiral cyclohexanes. We have recently developed a desymmetrization protocol for prochiral 2,2-disubstituted cyclopentene-1,3-diones by direct catalytic asymmetric vinylogous nucleophilic addition of deconjugated butenolides. In this perspective, we give an overview of asymmetric desymmetrization reactions leading to enantioenriched cyclopentanes and their derivatives. The focus is kept confined to the diverse nature of reactions used for this purpose. A brief discussion on the potential future directions is also provided.

Various structural, dynamic and thermodynamic properties of water molecules confined in single-wall carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are investigated using both polarizable and non-polarizable water models. The inclusion of polarizability quantitatively affects the nature of hydrogen bonding, which governs many properties of confined water molecules. Polarizable water leads to tighter hydrogen bonding and makes the distance between neighboring water molecules shorter than that for non-polarizable water. Stronger hydrogen bonding also decreases the rotational entropy and makes the diffusion constant smaller than in TIP3P and TIP3PM water models. The reorientational dynamics of the water molecules is governed by a jump mechanism, the barrier for the jump being highest for the polarizable water model. Our results highlight the role of polarizability in governing the dynamics of confined water and demonstrate that the inclusion of polarizability is necessary to obtain agreement with the results of ab initio simulations for the distributions of waiting and jump times. The SPC/E water model is found to predict various water properties in close agreement with the results of polarizable water models with much lower computational costs.

The room temperature ferromagnetic behavior of InN nanosfructures grown by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) is explored by means of magnetization measurements. The saturation magnetization and remanent magnetization are found to be strongly dependent on the size of the nanostructures. This suggests that the ferromagnetism is essentially confined to the surface of the nanostructures due to the possible defects. Raman spectroscopy shows the existence of indium vacancies which could be the source of ferromagnetic ordering in InN nanostructures.

Conventional solids are prepared from building blocks that are conceptually no larger than a hundred atoms. While van der Waals and dipole-dipole interactions also influence the formation of these materials, stronger interactions, referred to as chemical bonds, play a more decisive role in determining the structures of most solids. Chemical bonds that hold such materials together are said to be ionic, covalent, metallic, dative, or otherwise a combination of these. Solids that utilize semiconductor nanocrystal quantum dots as building units have been demonstrated to exist; however, the interparticle forces in such materials are decidedly not chemical. Here we demonstrate the formation of charge transfer states in a binary quantum dot mixture. Charge is observed to reside in quantum confined states of one of the participating quantum dots. These interactions lead to materials that may be regarded as the nanoscale analog of an ionic solid. The process by which these materials form has interesting parallels to chemical reactions in conventional chemistry.

Sheet-like clouds are common in turbulent gas and perhaps form via collisions between turbulent gas flows. Having examined the evolution of an isothermal shocked slab in an earlier contribution, in this work we follow the evolution of a sheet-like cloud confined by (thermal) pressure and gas in it is allowed to cool. The extant purpose of this endeavour is to study the early phases of core-formation. The observed evolution of this cloud supports the conjecture that molecular clouds themselves are three-phase media (comprising viz. a stable cold and warm medium, and a third thermally unstable medium), though it appears, clouds may evolve in this manner irrespective of whether they are gravitationally bound. We report, this sheet fragments initially due to the growth of the thermal instability (TI) and some fragments are elongated, filament-like. Subsequently, relatively large fragments become gravitationally unstable and sub-fragment into smaller cores. The formation of cores appears to be a three stage process: first, growth of the TI leads to rapid fragmentation of the slab; second, relatively small fragments acquire mass via gas-accretion and/or merger and third, sufficiently massive fragments become susceptible to the gravitational instability and sub-fragment to form smaller cores. We investigate typical properties of clumps (and smaller cores) resulting from this fragmentation process. Findings of this work support the suggestion that the weak velocity field usually observed in dense clumps and smaller cores is likely seeded by the growth of dynamic instabilities. Simulations were performed using the smooth particle hydrodynamics algorithm.

We report on an experimental study of the vertical impact of a concave nosed axisymmetric body on a free surface. Previous studies have shown that bodies with a convex nose, like a sphere, produce a well defined splash with a relatively large cavity behind the model. In contrast, we find that with a concave nose, there is hardly a splash and the cavity extent is greatly reduced. This may be explained by the fact that in the concave nosed case, the initial impact is between a confined air pocket and the free surface unlike in the convex nosed case. From measurements of the unsteady pressure in the concave nose portion, we show that in this case, the maximum pressures are significantly lower than the classically expected ``water hammer'' pressures and also lower than those generally measured on other geometries. Thus, the presence of an air pocket in the case of a concave nosed body adds an interesting dimension to the classical problem of impact of solid bodies on to a free surface.
