The solidification pathways of Nb rich Nb-Si alloys when processed under non-equilibrium conditions require understanding. Continuing with our earlier work on alloying additions in single eutectic composition 1,2], we report a detailed characterization of the microstructures of Nb-Si binary alloys with wide composition range (10-25 at% Si). The alloys are processed using chilled copper mould suction casting. This has allowed us to correlate the evolution of microstructure and phases with different possible solidification pathways. Finally these are correlated with mechanical properties through studies on deformation using mechanical testing under indentation and compressive loads. It is shown that microstructure modification can significantly influence the plasticity of these alloys.

Vertically aligned zinc oxide (ZnO) hierarchical nanostructures were developed by homo-epitaxial growth method using nickel as catalyst, and their physical properties were investigated and reported. ZnO nanorods grown by vapor-liquid-solid method are single crystalline and grown along the < 001 > direction, whereas the second order nano-branches are grown along the < 110 > direction. The homo-epitaxial relation between nano-branches (ZnOb) and ZnO cores (ZnOc) is found to be (110)ZnOb//(110)ZnOc and (002)ZnOb//(002)ZnOc. The simple and hierarchical nanostructures exhibited ultra-violet emission peak at 380 nm as near band edge emission of ZnO and have very weak defects related peak at 492 nm. Auction based mechanisms have become popular in industrial procurement settings. These mechanisms minimize the cost of procurement and at the same time achieve desirable properties such as truthful bidding by the suppliers. In this paper, we investigate the design of truthful procurement auctions taking into account an additional important issue namely carbon emissions. In particular, we focus on the following procurement problem: A buyer wishes to source multiple units of a homogeneous item from several competing suppliers who offer volume discount bids and who also provide emission curves that specify the cost of emissions as a function of volume of supply. We assume that emission curves are reported truthfully since that information is easily verifiable through standard sources. First we formulate the volume discount procurement auction problem with emission constraints under the assumption that the suppliers are honest (that is they report production costs truthfully). Next we describe a mechanism design formulation for green procurement with strategic suppliers. Our numerical experimentation shows that emission constraints can significantly alter sourcing decisions and affect the procurement costs dramatically. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first effort in explicitly taking into account carbon emissions in planning procurement auctions.

We report large scale deposition of tapered zinc oxide (ZnO) nanorods on Si(100) substrate by using newly designed metal-organic complex of zinc (Zn) as the precursor, and microwave irradiation assisted chemical synthesis as a process. The coatings are uniform and high density ZnO nanorods (similar to 1.5 mu m length) grow over the entire area (625 mm(2)) of the substrate within 1-5 min of microwave irradiation. ZnO coatings obtained by solution phase deposition yield strong UV emission. Variation of the molecular structure/molecular weight of the precursors and surfactants influence the crystallinity, morphology, and optical properties of ZnO coatings. The precursors in addition with the surfactant and the solvent are widely used to obtain desired coating on any substrate. The growth mechanism and the schematics of the growth process of ZnO coatings on Si(100) are discussed. (c) 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Undoped and (Co, Ag) co-doped ZnO nanostructure powders are synthesized by chemical precipitation method without using any capping agent and annealed in air ambient at 500 A degrees C for 1 h. Here, the Ag concentration is fixed at 5 mol% and Co concentration is increased from 0 to 5 mol%. The X-ray diffraction studies reveal that undoped and doped ZnO powders consist of pure hexagonal structure and nano-sized crystallites. The novel Raman peak at 530 cm(-1) has corroborated with the Co doped ZnO nanoparticles. Moreover, the PL studies reveal that as the Co doping concentration increases and it enters into ZnO lattice as substitutional dopant, it leads to the increase of oxygen vacancies (Vo) and zinc interstitials (Zn-i). From the magnetization measurements, it is noticed that the co-doped ZnO nanostructures exhibit considerably robust ferromagnetism i.e. 4.29 emu g(-1) even at room temperature. These (Co, Ag) co-doped ZnO nanopowders can be used in the fabrication of spintronic and optoelectronic device applications.

The design and development of a Bottom Pressure Recorder for a Tsunami Early Warning System is described here. The special requirements that it should satisfy for the specific application of deployment at ocean bed and pressure monitoring of the water column above are dealt with. A high-resolution data digitization and low circuit power consumption are typical ones. The implementation details of the data sensing and acquisition part to meet these are also brought out. The data processing part typically encompasses a Tsunami detection algorithm that should detect an event of significance in the background of a variety of periodic and aperiodic noise signals. Such an algorithm and its simulation are presented. Further, the results of sea trials carried out on the system off the Chennai coast are presented. The high quality and fidelity of the data prove that the system design is robust despite its low cost and with suitable augmentations, is ready for a full-fledged deployment at ocean bed. Silicene, a graphene analogue of silicon, has been generating immense interest due to its potential for applications in miniaturized devices. Unlike planar graphene, silicene prefers a buckled structure. Here we explore the possibility of stabilizing the planar form of silicene by Ni doping using first principles density functional theory based calculations. It is found that planar as well as buckled structure is stable for Ni-doped silicene, but the buckled sheet has slightly lower total energy. The planar silicene sheet has unstable phonon modes. A comparative study of the mechanical properties reveals that the in-plane stiffness of both the pristine and the doped planar silicene is higher compared to that of the buckled silicene. This suggests that planar silicene is mechanically more robust. Electronic structure calculations of the planar and buckled Ni-doped silicene show that the energy bands at the Dirac point transform from linear behavior to parabolic dispersion. Furthermore, we extend our study to Ge and Sn sheets that are also stable and the trends of comparable mechanical stability of the planar and buckled phases remain the same.

One-pot synthesis of amorphous iron oxide nanoparticles with two different dimensions (<5 nm and 60 nm) has been achieved using the reverse micelle method, with <5 nm nanoparticles separated from the stable colloid by exploiting their magnetic behaviour. The transformation of the as-prepared amorphous powders into Fe3O4 and Fe2O3 phases (gamma and alpha) is achieved by carrying out controlled annealing at elevated temperatures under different optimized conditions. The as-prepared samples resulting from micellar synthesis and the corresponding annealed ones are thoroughly characterized by powder X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and by Raman and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopies. Expectedly, the magnetic characteristics of Fe3O4 and Fe2O3 phase (gamma and alpha) nanoparticles are found to have strong dependence on their phase, dimension, and morphology. The coercivity of Fe3O4 and Fe2O3 (gamma and alpha) nanoparticles is reasonably high, even though high resolution TEM studies bring out that these nanoparticles are single crystalline. This is in contrast with previous reports wherein poly-crystallinity of iron oxides nanoparticles has been regarded as a prerequisite for high coercivity.

The dispersion state of multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) in melt mixed polyethylene/polyethylene oxide (PE/PEO) blends has been assessed by both surface and volume electrical conductivity measurements and the structural relaxations have been assessed by broadband dielectric spectroscopy. The selective localization of MWNTs in the blends was controlled by the flow characteristics of the components, which led to their localization in the energetically less favored phase (PE). The electrical conductivity and positive temperature co-efficient (PTC) measurements were carried out on hot pressed samples. The neat blends exhibited only a negative temperature coefficient (NTC) effect while the blends with MWNTs exhibited both a PTC and a NTC at the melting temperatures of PE and PEO respectively. These phenomenal changes were corroborated with the different crystalline morphology in the blends. It was deduced that during compression molding, the more viscous PEO phase spreads less in contrast to the less viscous PE phase. This has further resulted in a gradient in morphology as well as the distribution state of the MWNTs in the samples and was supported by scanning electron and scanning acoustic microscopy (SAM) studies and contact angle measurements. SAM from different depths of the samples revealed a gradient in the microstructure in the PE/PEO blends which is contingent upon the flow characteristics of the components. Interestingly, the surface and volume electrical conductivity was different due to the different dispersion state of the MWNTs at the surface and bulk. The observed surface and volume electrical conductivity measurements were corroborated with the evolved morphology during processing. The structural relaxations in both PE and PEO were discerned from broadband dielectric spectroscopy. The segmental dynamics below and above the melting temperature of PEO were significantly different in the presence of MWNTs.

Structural dynamics, dielectric permittivity and ferroelectric properties in poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF)/poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) (PVDF/PMMA) blends with respect to crystalline morphology was systematically investigated in presence of amine functionalized MWNTs (NH2-MWNTs) using dielectric spectroscopy. The crystalline morphology and the crystallization driven demixing in the blends was assessed by light microscopy (LM), wide angle X-ray diffraction (WXRD) and, in situ, by shear rheology. The crystal nucleation activity of PVDF was greatly induced by NH2-MWNTs, which also showed two distinct structural relaxations in dielectric loss owing to mobility confinement of PVDF chains and smaller cooperative lengths. The presence of crystal-amorphous interphase was supported by the presence of interfacial polarization at lower frequencies in the dielectric loss spectra. On contrary, the control blends showed a single broad relaxation at higher frequency due to defective crystal nuclei. This was further supported by monitoring the dielectric relaxations during isothermal crystallization of PVDF in the blends. These observations were addressed with respect to the spherulite sizes which were observed to be larger in case of blends with NH2-MWNTs. Higher dielectric permittivity with minimal losses was also observed in blends with NH2-MWNTs as compared to neat PVDF. Polarization obtained using P-E (polarization-electric field) hysteresis loops was higher in case of blends with NH2-MWNTs in contrast to control blends and PVDF. These observations were corroborated with the charge trapped at the crystal-amorphous interphase and larger crystal sizes in the blends with NH2-MWNTs. The microstructure and localization of MWNTs were assessed using SEM.

Stone-Wales (SW) defects in materials having hexagonal lattice are the most common topological defects that affect the electronic and mechanical properties. Using first principles density functional theory based calculations, we study the formation energy and kinetic barrier of SW-defect in infinite and finite sheets of silicene. The formation energies as well as the barriers in both the cases are significantly lower than those of graphene. Furthermore, compared with the infinite sheets, the energy barriers and formation energies are lower for finite sheets. However, due to low barriers these defects are expected to heal out of the finite sheets. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Rapid and facile synthesis of similar to 7 nm and similar to 100-400 nm nano-structures of anatase titania is achieved by exploiting the chemical nature of solvents through a microwave based approach. After using these nanostructures as a photoanode in dye-sensitized solar cells, a modest yet appreciable efficiency of 6.5% was achieved under the illumination of AM 1.5 G one sun (100 mW cm(-2)).

We investigate the impact of the nucleation law for nucleation on Al-Ti-B inoculant particles, of the motion of inoculant particles and of the motion of grains on the predicted macrosegregation and microstructure in a grain-refined Al-22 wt.% Cu alloy casting. We conduct the study by numerical simulations of a casting experiment in a side-cooled 76×76×254 mm sand mould. Macrosegregation and microstructure formation are studied with a volume-averaged two-phase model accounting for macroscopic heat and solute transport, melt convection, and transport of inoculant particles and equiaxed grains. On the microscopic scale it accounts for nucleation on inoculant particles with a given size distribution (and corresponding activation undercooling distribution)and for the growth of globular solid grains. The growth kinetics is described by accounting for limited solute diffusion in both liquid and solid phases and for convective effects. We show that the consideration of a size distribution of the inoculants has a strong impact on the microstructure(final grain size) prediction. The transport of inoculants significantly increases the microstructure heterogeneities and the grain motion refines the microstructure and reduces the microstructure heterogeneities.
