We combine multiple scattering and renormalization group methods to calculate the leading order dimensionless virial coefficient k(s) for the friction coefficient of dilute polymer solutions under conditions where the osmotic second virial coefficient vanishes (i.e., at the theta point T-theta). Our calculations are formulated in terms of coupled kinetic equations for the polymer and solvent, in which the polymers are modeled as continuous chains whose configurations evolve under the action of random forces in, the velocity field of the solvent. To lowest order in epsilon=4-d, we find that k(s) = 1.06. This result compares satisfactorily with existing experimental estimates of k(s), which are in the range 0.7-0.8. It is also in good agreement with other theoretical results on chains and suspensions at T-theta. Our calculated k(s) is also found to be identical to the leading order virial coefficient of the tracer friction coefficient at the theta point. We discuss possible reasons for the difficulties encountered when attempting to evaluate k(s) by extrapolating prior renormalization group calculations from semidilute concentrations to the infinitely dilute limit. Numerical results are presented for the free-convection boundary-layer equations of the Ostwald de-Waele non-Newtonian power-law type fluids near a three-dimensional (3-D) stagnation point of attachment on an isothermal surface. The existence of dual solutions that are three-dimensional in nature have been verified by means of a numerical procedure. An asymptotic solution for very large Prandtl numbers has also been derived. Solutions are presented for a range of values of the geometric curvature parameter c, the power-law index n, and the Prandtl number Pr.

Measured health signals incorporate significant details about any malfunction in a gas turbine. The attenuation of noise and removal of outliers from these health signals while preserving important features is an important problem in gas turbine diagnostics. The measured health signals are a time series of sensor measurements such as the low rotor speed, high rotor speed, fuel flow, and exhaust gas temperature in a gas turbine. In this article, a comparative study is done by varying the window length of acausal and unsymmetrical weighted recursive median filters and numerical results for error minimization are obtained. It is found that optimal filters exist, which can be used for engines where data are available slowly (three-point filter) and rapidly (seven-point filter). These smoothing filters are proposed as preprocessors of measurement delta signals before subjecting them to fault detection and isolation algorithms.

Commercially available 3Y-TZP and Mg-PSZ flats mere abraded by a 150 degrees diamond cone at -196 degrees, 25 degrees, 200 degrees, and 400 degrees C. The coefficient of friction, the track width, and the morphological features of the track were recorded. Raman spectroscopy mas used to record the tetragonal-to-monoclinic phase transformation (t --> m) as a function of distance away from the track. The study was undertaken to establish the influence of tangential traction on phase transformation and surface damage.

Real-time simulation of deformable solids is essential for some applications such as biological organ simulations for surgical simulators. In this work, deformable solids are approximated to be linear elastic, and an easy and straight forward numerical technique, the Finite Point Method (FPM), is used to model three dimensional linear elastostatics. Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) is used to accelerate computations. Results show that the Finite Point Method, together with GPU, can compute three dimensional linear elastostatic responses of solids at rates suitable for real-time graphics, for solids represented by reasonable number of points.

Thermal oxidative polymerization of alpha-methylstyrene (AMS) has been studied at various temperatures(45-70 degrees C) and pressures (50-400 psi). Due to its high electron dense double bond, it undergoes thermal oxidative polymerization even at low temperatures fairly easily. The major products are poly(alpha-methylstyrene peroxide) (PMSP), and its decomposition products are acetophenone and formaldehyde. Above 45 degrees C the rate of polymerization increases sharply at a particular instant showing an ''autoacceleration'' with the formation of a knee point. The ''autoacceleration'' is supported from the fact that the plot, of R-p vs T shows a rapid rise, and the plot of ln R-p vs 1/T is non-Arrhenius. The occurrence of autoacceleration is explained on the basis of acetophenone-induced cleavage of PMSP during polymerization, generating more initiating alkoxy radicals, which subsequently leads to the rapid rise in the rate of polymerization. The mechanism of autoacceleration is supported by the change in. order, activation energy, and activation volume before and after the knee point.

The nonequilibrium dynamic phase transition in the kinetic Ising model in the presence of an oscillating magnetic field is studied by Monte Carlo simulation. The fluctuation of the dynamic older parameter is studied as a function of temperature near the dynamic transition point. The temperature variation of appropriately defined ''susceptibility'' is also studied near the dynamic transition point. Similarly, the fluctuation of energy and appropriately defined ''specific heat'' is studied as a function of temperature near the dynamic transition point. In both cases, the fluctuations (of dynamic order parameter and energy) and the corresponding responses diverge (in power law fashion) near the dynamic transition point with similar critical behavior (with identical exponent values).

Twin NLO chromophores having two azobenzene units linked by a flexible polymethylene spacer of varying lengths are shown to exhibit odd-even oscillations in their second harmonic generation (SHG) efficiencies, when measured in the powder form. These twin systems were designed to also exhibit liquid cystallinity, and indeed most of them do exhibit a nematic mesophase. The anticipated odd-even oscillations, in both their isotropization transition temperatures (Ti) and isotropization entropies (Delta Si), were also observed. The odd-even oscillation of the SHG efficiencies has been ascribed to a more effective cancellation of mesogenic dipoles in the even twins as compared to their odd counterparts, due to a preferred centrosymmetric packing in the former case. Based on the behaviour of these twin chromophoric molecules, it may be anticipated that such odd-even oscillations will also be observed in the analogous main chain NLO polymers.

This paper examines the effect of substitution of water by heavy water in a polymer solution of polystyrene (molecular weight = 13000) and acetone. A critical double point (CDP), at which the upper and the lower partially-miscible regions merge, occurs at nearly the same coordinates as for the system [polystyrene + acetone + water]. The shape of the critical line for [polystyrene + acetone + heavy water] is highly asymmetric. An explanation for the occurrence of the water-induced CDP in [polystyrene + acetone] is advanced in terms of the interplay between contact energy dissimilarity and free-volume disparity of the polymer and the solvent. The question of the possible existence of a one-phase hole in an hourglass phase diagram is addressed in [polystyrene + acetone + water]. Our data exclude such a possibility.
Suboptimal Midcourse Guidance of Interceptors for High-Speed Targets with Alignment Angle Constraint
Resumo:
Using the recently developed computationally efficient model predictive static programming and a closely related model predictive spread control concept, two nonlinear suboptimal midcourse guidance laws are presented in this paper for interceptors engaging against incoming high-speed ballistic missiles. The guidance laws are primarily based on nonlinear optimal control theory, and hence imbed effective trajectory optimization concepts into the guidance laws. Apart from being energy efficient by minimizing the control usage throughout the trajectory (minimum control usage leads to minimum turning, and hence leads to minimum induced drag), both of these laws enforce desired alignment constraints in both elevation and azimuth in a hard-constraint sense. This good alignment during midcourse is expected to enhance the effectiveness of the terminal guidance substantially. Both point mass as well as six-degree-of-freedom simulation results (with a realistic inner-loop autopilot based on dynamic inversion) are presented in this paper, which clearly shows the effectiveness of the proposed guidance laws. It has also been observed that, even with different perturbations of missile parameters, the performance of guidance is satisfactory. A comparison study, with the vector explicit guidance scheme proposed earlier in the literature, also shows that the newly proposed model-predictive-static-programming-based and model-predictive-spread-control-based guidance schemes lead to lesser lateral acceleration demand and lesser velocity loss during engagement.

The understanding and control of anisotropy in Fe films grown on cubic systems such as GaAs and MgO has been of interest from the point of view of applications in devices. We report magnetic anisotropy studies on Fe/GaAs(001) and Fe/MgO/GaAs(001) prepared by pulsed laser deposition. In Fe/GaAs(001), magneto optical Kerr effect (MOKE) measurements revealed a dominant uniaxial anisotropy for Fe thickness less than 20 monolayers (ML) and this was confirmed by ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) studies. Multiple steps in the hysteresis loops were observed for Fe films of thickness 20 and 25 ML. Whereas, in Fe/MgO/GaAs(001), even at 25 ML of Fe, the uniaxial anisotropy remained dominant. The anisotropy constants obtained from FMR spectra have shown that the relative strength of uniaxial anisotropy is higher as compared to the cubic anisotropy constant in the case of Fe/MgO/GaAs(001). Crystal structures of three heptapeptides Boc-Ala-Leu-Aib-XXX-Ala-Leu-Aib-OMe (where XXX = methionine in peptide A, selenomethionine in peptide B, and S-benzyl cysteine in peptide C) reveal mixed 3(10)-/alpha-helical conformations with R factors of 6.94, 5.79, and 5.98, respectively. All the structures were solved in the P2(1)2(1)2(1) space group. 3(10)- to a-helical transitions are observed in all of these peptides. The helices begin as a 3(10)-helical segment at the N-terminus and then transit for peptides A and C at residue Aib(3) carbonyl (O(3)), while for peptide B the transition occurs at residue Leu(2) carbonyl oxygen (O(2)). There are water molecules associated in the crystal of each of these peptides and they form different types of hydrogen bonding patterns in each crystal. The observations suggest that 3(10)- to alpha-helical transition is sequence dependent in these short heptapeptide sequences.

We discuss three methods to correct spherical aberration for a point to point imaging system. First, results obtained using Fermat's principle and the ray tracing method are described briefly. Next, we obtain solutions using Lie algebraic techniques. Even though one cannot always obtain analytical results using this method, it is often more powerful than the first method. The result obtained with this approach is compared and found to agree with the exact result of the first method.

The unsteady three-dimensional stagnation point Bow of a viscoelastic fluid has been studied. Both nodal and saddle point regions of How have been considered. The unsteadiness in the Bow field is caused by the free stream velocity which varies arbitrarily with time. The governing boundary layer equations represented by a system of nonlinear partial differential equations have been solved numerically using a finite-difference scheme along with the quasilinearization technique in the nodal point region and a finite-difference scheme in combination with the parametric differentiation technique in the saddle point region. The skin friction coefficients for the viscoelastic fluid are found to be significantly less than those of the Newtonian fluid. The skin friction and heat transfer increase due to suction and reduce due to injection. The heat transfer at the wall increases with the Prandtl number. There is a flow reversal in the y-component of the velocity in the saddle point region. The absolute value of c (<<<0) for which reversal takes place is less than that of the Newtonian fluid. We study the transient response of a colloidal bead which is released from different heights and allowed to relax in the potential well of an optical trap. Depending on the initial potential energy, the system's time evolution shows dramatically different behaviors. Starting from the short-time reversible to long-time irreversible transition, a stationary reversible state with zero net dissipation can be achieved as the release point energy is decreased. If the system starts with even lower energy, it progressively extracts useful work from thermal noise and exhibits an anomalous irreversibility. In addition, we have verified the Transient Fluctuation Theorem and the Integrated Transient Fluctuation Theorem even for the non-ergodic descriptions of our system. Copyright (C) EPLA, 2011
