In this paper, we report a systematic study of low frequency 1∕fα resistance fluctuation in thin metal films (Ag on Si) at different stages of damage process when the film is subjected to high current stressing. The resistance fluctuation (noise) measurement was carried out in situ using a small ac bias that has been mixed with the dc stressing current. The experiment has been carried out as a function of temperature in the range of 150–350 K. The experiment establishes that the current stressed film, as it undergoes damage due to various migration forces, develops an additional low-frequency noise spectral power that does not have the usual 1∕f spectral shape. The magnitude of extra term has an activated temperature dependence (activation energy of ≈0.1 eV) and has a 1∕f1.5 spectral dependence. The activation energy is the same as seen from the temperature dependence of the lifetime of the film. The extra 1∕f1.5 spectral power changes the spectral shape of the noise power as the damage process progress. The extra term likely arising from diffusion starts in the early stage of the migration process during current stressing and is noticeable much before any change can be detected in simultaneous resistance measurements. The experiment carried out over a large temperature range establish a strong correlation between the evolution of the migration process in a current stressed film and the low-frequency noise component that is not a 1∕f noise.

Studies on the electrical switching behavior of melt quenched bulk Si15Te85-xSbx glasses have been undertaken in the composition range (1 <= x <= 10), in order to understand the effect of Sb addition on the electrical switching behavior of Si15Te85-x base glass. It has been observed that all the Si15Te85-xSbx glasses studied exhibit a smooth memory type switching. Further, the switching voltages are found to decrease almost linearly with Sb content, which indicates that the metallicity of the dopant plays a dominant role in this system compared to network connectivity/rigidity. The thickness dependence of switching voltage (V-th) indicates a clear thermal origin for the switching mechanism. The temperature variation of switching voltages reveals that the Si15Te85-xSbx glasses studied have a moderate thermal stability. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

A three-level space phasor generation scheme with common mode elimination and with reduced power device count is proposed for an open end winding induction motor in this paper. The open end winding induction motor is fed by the three-level inverters from both sides. Each two level inverter is formed by cascading two two-level inverters. By sharing the bottom inverter for the two three-level inverters on either side, the power device count is reduced. The switching states with zero common mode voltage variation are selected for PWM switching so that there is no alternating common mode voltage in the pole voltages as well as in phase voltages. Only two isolated DC-links, with half the voltage rating of a conventional three-level neutral point clamped inverter, are needed for the proposed scheme.

A simple, low-cost, constant frequency, analog controller is proposed for the front-end half-bridge rectifier of a single-phase transformerless UPS system to maintain near unity power factor at the input and zero dc-offset voltage at the output. The controller generates the required gating pulses by comparing the input current with a periodic, bipolar, linear carrier without sensing the input voltage. Two voltage controllers and a single integrator with reset are used to generate the required carrier. All the necessary control operations can be performed without using any PLL, multiplier and/or divider. The controller can be fabricated as a single integrated circuit. The control concept is validated through simulation and also experimentally on an 800W half-bridge rectifier. Experimental results are presented for ac-dc application, and also for ac-dc-ac UPS application with both sinusoidal and nonlinear loads. The simulation and experimental results agree well.

At the time of restoration transmission line switching is one of the major causes, which creates transient overvoltages. Though detailed Electro Magnetic Transient studies are carried out extensively for the planning and design of transmission systems, such studies are not common in a day-today operation of power systems. However it is important for the operator to ensure during restoration of supply that peak overvoltages resulting from the switching operations are well within safe limits. This paper presents a support vector machine approach to classify the various cases of line energization in the category of safe or unsafe based upon the peak value of overvoltage at the receiving end of line. Operator can define the threshold value of voltage to assign the data pattern in either of the class. For illustration of proposed approach the power system used for switching transient peak overvoltages tests is a 400 kV equivalent system of an Indian southern gri

The crystal structure of beta-hydroxyacyl acyl carrier protein dehydratase of Plasmodium falciparum (PfFabZ) has been determined at a resolution of 2.4 angstrom. PfFabZ has been found to exist as a homodimer (d-PfFabZ) in the crystals of the present study in contrast to the reported hexameric form (h-PfFabZ) which is a trimer of dimers crystallized in a different condition. The catalytic sites of this enzyme are located in deep narrow tunnel-shaped pockets formed at the dimer interface. A histidine residue from one subunit of the dimer and a glutamate residue from the other subunit lining the tunnel form the catalytic dyad in the reported crystal structures. While the position of glutamate remains unaltered in the crystal structure of d-PffabZ compared to that in b-PfFabZ, the histidine residue takes up an entirely different conformation and moves away from the tunnel leading to a His-Phe cis-trans peptide flip at the histidine residue. In addition, a loop in the vicinity has been observed to undergo a similar flip at a Tyr-Pro peptide bond. These alterations not only prevent the formation of a hexamer but also distort the active site geometry resulting in a dimeric form of FabZ that is incapable of substrate binding. The dimeric state and an altered catalytic site architecture make d-PfFabZ distinctly different from the FabZ structures described so far. Dynamic light scattering and size exclusion chromatographic studies clearly indicate a pH-related switching of the dimers to active hexamers. (c) 2006 Federation of European Biochemical Societies. Bhatnagar and Rathna (Quar. Journ. Mech. Appl. Maths., 1963,16, 329) investigated the flows of Newtonian, Reiner-Rivlin and Rivlin-Ericksen fluids between two rotating coaxial cones. In case of the last two types of fluids, they predicted the breaking of secondary flow field in any meridian plane. We find that such breaking is avoided by the application of a sufficiently strong azimuthal magnetic field arising from a line current along the axis of the cones.

Temperature-time characteristics of tungsten filaments heated electrically under constant voltage in vacuum have been analysed. The analysis is carried out over the temperature range 300-2500°K, taking into account the actual variations with temperature of the various parameters involved, as reported by Jones and Langmuir (1927). The analysis leads to the conclusion that the temperature-time relationship is exponential throughout the range. The time constant is shown to be proportional to the diameter of the filament and T f-4.2 where Tf is the final temperature of the filament. The results of the analysis are applied to derive the voltage variations (continuous and discrete types) required to keep the transient current within specified limits during the rapid switching on of filaments as met with in high power thermionic valves.

A voltage source inverter-fed induction motor produces a pulsating torque due to application of nonsinusoidal voltages. Torque pulsation is strongly influenced by the pulsewidth modulation (PWM) method employed. Conventional space vector PWM (CSVPWM) is known to result in less torque ripple than sine-triangle PWM. This paper aims at further reduction in the pulsating torque by employing advanced bus-clamping switching sequences, which apply an active vector twice in a subcycle. This paper proposes a hybrid PWM technique which employs such advanced bus-clamping sequences in conjunction with a conventional switching sequence. The proposed hybrid PWM technique is shown to reduce the torque ripple considerably over CSVPWM along with a marginal reduction in current ripple.

In the present note we have studied the harmonic and anharmonic oscillations of cylindrical plasma using Lagrangian formalism. In order to study the harmonic oscillations, the equations are linearized and the resulting equation for the displacement has been numerically solved. For situations present in thermonuclear reactors, the presence of axial magnetic field is found necessary to make the periods of oscillation to become comparable with the time required for the thermonuclear reactions to set in. A detailed analysis of the anharmonic oscillations reveals that the significant interaction is between the first and the second mode. The fundamental period of anharmonic oscillation is more than the corresponding period of harmonic oscillations by 9·2%. Graphs have been drawn for the amplitudes of relative variations in density and magnetic field and of the time-varying part of anharmonic oscillation.

Doping dependent current-voltage (I-V) and capacitance-voltage (C-V) measurements were carried out on polypyrrole devices in metal-polymer-metal sandwich structure. Temperature dependent I-V measurements infer that space-charge limited conduction (SCLC) with exponential trap distribution is appropriate for the moderately doped samples, whereas trap-free SCLC is observed in lightly doped samples. Trap densities and energies are estimated, the effective mobility is calculated using the Poole-Frenkel model, and the mobility exhibits thermally activated behavior. Frequency dependent capacitance-voltage characteristics show a peak near zero bias voltage, which implies that these devices are symmetric with a negligible barrier height at the metal-polymer interface. Low frequency capacitance measurements have revealed a negative capacitance at higher voltages due to the processes associated with the injection and redistribution of space-charges. This paper presents time-domain characteristics of induced current and voltage on a rocket in the presence of its exhaust plume when an electromagnetic (EM) wave generated by a nearby lightning discharge is incident on it. For the EM-field interaction with the rocket, the finite-difference time-domain technique has been used. The distributed electrical parameters, such as capacitance and inductance of the rocket and its exhaust plume, are computed using the method of moments technique. For the electrical characterization of the exhaust plume, the computational fluid dynamics technique has been used. The computed peak value of the electrical conductivity of the exhaust plume is 0.12 S/m near the exit plane and it reduces to 0.02 S/m at the downstream end. The relative permittivity varies from 0.91 to 0.99. The exhaust plume behaves as a good conductor for EM fields with frequencies less than 2.285 GHz. It has been observed that the peak value of the induced current on the rocket gets enhanced significantly in the presence of the conducting exhaust plume for the rocket and exhaust plume dimensions and parameters studied. The magnitude of the time-varying induced current at the tail is much more than that of any other section of the rocket.
