Solid solutions of the formula, A2–xLa2Ti3–xNbxO10(A = K, Rb), exist for the range 0[less-than-or-eq]x[less-than-or-eq]1.0, bridging n= 3 members of the Ruddlesden–Popper series (A2La2Ti3O10) and the Dion–Jacobson series (ALa2Ti2NbO10). For 0[less-than-or-eq]x[less-than-or-eq]0.75, the phases possess body-centred structures characteristic of the Ruddlesden–Popper phases, while the x= 1 members are isostructural with KCa2Nb3O10(A = K) and CsCa2Nb3O10(A = Rb). Protonated derivatives, H2–xLa2Ti3–xNbxO10, which are prepared by ion exchange, retain the structural difference of the parent phases. A difference in the Brønsted acidity of the protonated derivatives revealed by intercalation experiments with organic bases seems to be related to this structural difference.

Cylindrical specimens of commercial pure titanium have been compressed at strain rates in the range of 0.1 to 100 s-1 and temperatures in the range of 25-degrees-C to 400-degrees-C. At strain rates of 10 and 100 s-1, the specimens exhibited adiabatic shear bands. At lower strain rates, the material deformed in an inhomogeneous fashion. These material-related instabilities are examined in the light of the ''phenomenological model'' and the ''dynamic materials mode.'' It is found that the regime of adiabatic shear band formation is predicted by the phenomenological model, while the dynamic materials model is able to predict the inhomogeneous deformation zone. The criterion based on power partitioning is competent to predict the variations within the inhomogeneous deformation zone.

Texture development in commercially pure titanium during equal channel angular extrusion (ECAE) through Routes A, Be and C has been studied up to three passes at 400 C. Textures were measured using X-ray diffraction, while the microstructural analyses were performed using electron back-scattered diffraction as well as transmission electron microscopy. Occurrences of dynamic restoration processes (recovery and recrystallization) were clearly noticed at all levels of deformations. Finally, the textures were simulated using a viscoplastic polycrystal self-consistent (VPSC) model. Simulations were performed incorporating basal, prismatic and pyramidal slip systems as well as tensile and compressive twinning. The simulated textures corroborate well with experimental textures in spite of the occurrence of dynamic restoration processes. (C) 2010 Acta Materialia Inc. Published by Elsevier Ltd. We describe the synthesis structures and dielectric properties of new perovskite oxides of the formula (Ba3MTiMO9)-Ti-III-O-V for M-III = Fe Ga Y Lu and M-V = Nb Ta Sb While M-V = Nb and Ta oxides adopt disordered/partially ordered 3C perovskite structures where M-III/Ti/M-V metal-oxygen octahedra are corner connected the M-V = Sb oxides show a distinct preference for the 6H structure where Sb-V/Ti-IV metal-oxygen octahedra share a common face forming (Sb Ti)O-9 dimers that are corner-connected to the (MO6)-O-III octahedra The preference of antimony oxides (Sb-V 4d(10)) for the 6H structure which arises from a special Sb-V-O chemical bonding that tends to avoid linear Sb-O-Sb linkages unlike Nb-V/Ta-V d(0) atoms which prefer similar to 180 degrees Nb/Ta-O-Nb/Ta linkages - is consistent with the crystal chemistry of M-V-O oxides in general The dielectric properties reveal a significant difference among Mill members All the oxides with the 3C structure excepting those with Mill = Fe show a normal low loss dielectric behaviour with epsilon = 20-60 in the temperature range 50-400 degrees C the M-III = Fe members with this structure (M-V = Nb Ta) display a relaxor-like ferroelectric behaviour with large E values at frequencies <= 1 MHz (50-500 degrees C) (C) 2010 Elsevier Masson SAS All rights reserved

Ab initio MO calculations are performed on a series of ion-molecular and ion pair-molecular complexes of H2O + MX (MX = LiF, LiCl, NaCl, BeO and MgO) systems. BSSE-corrected stabilization energies, optimized geometrical parameters, internal force constants and harmonic vibrational frequencies have been evaluated for all the structures of interest. The trends observed in the geometrical parameters and other properties calculated for the mono-hydrated contact ion pair complexes parallel those computed for the complexes of the individual ions. The bifurcated structures are found to be saddle points with an imaginary frequency corresponding to the rocking mode of water molecules. The solvent-shared ion pair complexes have high interaction energies. Trends in the internal force constant and harmonic frequency values are discussed in terms of ion-molecular and ion-pair molecular interactions.
Diastereospecific Coupling of Imines by Low-Valent Titanium: An Experimental and Computational Study
Resumo:
The reaction of phenylsilane (PhSiH3) and titanium(IV) isopropoxide Ti(OiPr)(4)] generates low-valent titanium alkoxides that reduce and reductively couple imines. The C-C coupling reaction is diastereospecific, with exclusive formation of the (+/-)-isomer. The yield is dependent on the concentration of titanium(IV) isopropoxide used. Using imines with varying electronic demand revealed that the coupling is most efficient for unsubstituted imines. The involvement of a trimeric titanium biradical species is invoked to explain the observed concentration dependence and diastereospecificity in the reaction. Multilayer ONIOM (''our own n-layered integrated molecular orbital and molecular mechanics'') calculations were carried out on the plausible intermediates involved by using the Guassian 09 suite of programs. Formation of the trimeric biradical species leading to the formation of the (+/-)-isomer is more favored than formation of the trimeric biradical species, which leads to the meso-isomer. Similar calculations with dimeric intermediates do not predict the (+/-)-selectivity. Mass spectral analysis of the reaction mixture indicates the presence of a trimeric titanium alkoxide species.

A structural investigation of cubic oxides (space group I23) of the formula Bi(26-x)M(x)O(40-delta) (M = Ti, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni and Pb) related to the Y-Bi2O3 phase has been carried out by the Rietveld profile analysis of high-resolution X-ray powder diffraction data in order to establish the cation distributions. Compositional dependence of the cation distribution has been examined in the case of Bi26-xCoxO40-delta (1 < x < 16). The study reveals that in Bi(26-X)M(X)O(40-delta) with M = Ti, Mn, Fe, Co or Pb, the M cations tend to occupy tetrahedral (2a) sites when x < 2 while the octahedral (24f) sites are shared by the excess Co or Ni cations with Bi atoms when x > 2. Also experimental magnetic moments of Mn, Co and Ni derivatives have been used to establish the valence state and distribution of these cations.

Cylindrical specimens of textured commercial pure alpha-titanium plate, cut with the cylinder axis along the rolling direction for one set of experiments and in the long transverse direction for the other set, were compressed at strain rates in the range of 0.001 to 100 s-1 and temperatures in the range of 25-degrees-C to 400-degrees-C. At strain rates greater-than-or-equal-to 1 s-1, both sets of specimens exhibited adiabatic shear bands, but the intensity of shear bands was found to be higher in the rolling direction specimens than in the long transverse direction specimens. At strain rates -0.1 s-1, the material deformed in a microstructurally inhomogeneous fashion. For the rolling direction specimens, cracking was observed at 100-degrees-C and at strain rates -0.1 s-1. This is attributed to dynamic strain aging. Such cracking was not observed in the long transverse specimens. The differences in the intensity of adiabatic shear bands and that of dynamic strain aging between the two sets of test specimens are attributed to the strong crystallographic texture present in these plates.

Texture evolution in h. c. p. (alpha) phase derived from aging of a differently processed metastable b.c.c. (beta) titanium alloy was investigated. The study was aimed at examining (i) the effect of different b. c. c. cold rolling textures and (ii) the effect of different defect structures on the h. c. p transformation texture. The alloy metastable beta alloy Ti-10V-4.5Fe-1.5Al was rolled at room temperature by unidirectional (UDR) and multi-step cross rolling (MSCR). A piece of the as-rolled materials were subjected to aging in order to derive the h. c. p. (alpha) phase. In the other route, the as-rolled materials were recrystallized and then aged. Textures were measured using X-ray as well as Electron Back Scatter Diffraction. Rolling texture of beta phase, as characterized by the presence of a strong gamma fibre, was found stronger in M S C R compared to UDR, although they were qualitatively similar. The stronger texture of MSCR sample could be attributed to the inhomogeneous deformation taking place in the sample that might contribute to weakening of texture. Upon recrystallization in beta phase field close to beta-transus. the textures qualitatively resembled the corresponding beta deformation textures; however, they got strengthed. The aging of differently beta rolled samples resulted in the product alpha-phase with different textures. The (UDR + Aged) sample had a stronger texture than (MSCR + Aged) sample, which could be due to continuation of defect accumulation in UDR sample, thus providing more potential sites for the nucleation of alpha phase. The trend was reversed in samples recrystallized prior to aging. The (MSCR + Recrystallized + Aged) sample showed stronger texture of alpha phase than the (UDR + Recrystallized + Aged) sample. This could be attributed to extensive defect annihilation in the UDR sample on recrystallization prior to aging. The (MSCR + Aged) sample exhibited more alpha variants when compared to (MSCR + Recrystallized + Aged) sample. This has been attributed to the availability of more potential sites for nucleation of alpha phase in the former. It could be concluded that alpha transformation texture depends mainly on the defect structure of the parent phase.

The reaction between Fe foil and a disc of ilmenite solid solution (Co-0.48 Ni-0.52) TiO3 was studied at 1273 K. At the metal/oxide interface, the displacement reaction, Fe + (Co,Mg)TiO3 = Co + (Fe,Mg)TiO3 occurs, resulting in an ilmenite solid solution containing three divalent cations. Ferrous ions diffuse into the oxide solid solution and cause the precipitation of Co-Fe alloy as discrete particles inside the oxide matrix. The morphology of the product layer was characterized by SEM. Only two phases, alloy and ilmenite, were detected in the reaction zone. This suggests that the local flux condition imposed by ilmenite stoichiometry (Co + Fe + Mg):Ti = 1:1] was satisfied during the reactive diffusion: (J(Co) + J(Fe) + J(Mg)) = J(Ti). The composition of the alloy and the oxide was determined using EPMA as a function of distance in the direction of diffusion. Although Mg does not participate in the displacement reaction, its composition in the ilmenite phase was found to be position dependent inside the reaction zone. The up-hill diffusion of inert Mg is caused by the development of chemical potential gradients as a result of displacement reaction. The evolution of composition gradients inside the reaction zone and the diffusion path in a ternary composition diagram of the system CoTiO3-FeTiO3-MgTiO3 are discussed. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. Polycrystalline Ti thin films are shown to gradually transform from face-centered cubic (fcc) to hexagonal close-packed structure (hcp) with increasing film thickness. Diffraction stress analysis revealed that the fcc phase is formed in a highly compressive hcp matrix (>= 2 GPa), the magnitude of which decreases with increasing film thickness. A correlation between stress and crystallographic texture vis-a-vis the fcc-hcp phase transformation has been established. The total free energy change of the system upon phase transformation calculated using the experimental results shows that the fcc-hcp transformation is theoretically possible in the investigated film thickness regime (144-720 nm) and the hcp structure is stable for films thicker than 720 nm, whereas the fcc structure can be stabilized in Ti films much thinner than 144 nm. Anion-deficient perovskite oxides of the formula AM(1-x)Al(x)O(3-x) (A = Na or K; M = Nb or Ta) have been prepared for 0 < x less than or equal to 0.5. Diffraction experiments reveal that while the potassium compounds adopt orthorhombic/cubic perovskite structures similar to the parent KNbO3/KTaO3, the sodium compound, NaNb0.5Al0.5O2.5, possesses a brownmillerite/LaSr-CuAlO5-like superstructure. Al-27 NMR spectra show an exclusive tetrahedral oxygen coordination for AI(III) in Na-Nb0.5Al0.5O2.5 (I) and both tetrahedral and octahedral coordination for Al(III) in KNb0.5Al0.5O2.5 (II). The results suggest a long-range and short-range ordering of oxide ion vacancies in I and II respectively. Electrical conductivity measurements show a significant oxide ion conduction for KNb1-xAlxO3-x, with the conductivity increasing with x up to x = 0.5. The differences in the Arrhenius plots of the ionic conductivity of I and II have been rationalized in terms of the long-range and short-range ordering of oxide ion vacancies in the anion-deficient perovskite oxides.
