A thermodynamic study of the Ti-O system at 1573 K has been conducted using a combination of thermogravimetric and emf techniques. The results indicate that the variation of oxygen potential with the nonstoichiometric parameter delta in stability domain of TiO2-delta with rutile structure can be represented by the relation, Delta mu o(2) = -6RT In delta - 711970(+/-1600) J/mol. The corresponding relation between non-stoichiometric parameter delta and partial pressure of oxygen across the whole stability range of TiO2-delta at 1573 K is delta proportional to P-O2(-1/6). It is therefore evident that the oxygen deficient behavior of nonstoichiometric TiO2-delta is dominated by the presence of doubly charged oxygen vacancies and free electrons. The high-precision measurements enabled the resolution of oxygen potential steps corresponding to the different Magneli phases (Ti-n O2n-1) up to n = 15. Beyond this value of n, the oxygen potential steps were too small to be resolved. Based on composition of the Magneli phase in equilibrium with TiO2-delta, the maximum value of n is estimated to be 28. The chemical potential of titanium was derived as a function of composition using the Gibbs-Duhem relation. Gibbs energies of formation of the Magneli phases were derived from the chemical potentials of oxygen and titanium. The values of -2441.8(+/-5.8) kJ/mol for Ti4O7 and -1775.4(+/-4.3) kJ/mol for Ti3O5 Obtained in this study refine values of -2436.2(+/-26.1) kJ/mol and-1771.3(+/-6.9) kJ/mol, respectively, given in the JANAF thermochemical tables.

Shell model calculation of defect energies in alkali halides have been carried out using the ion-dependent, crystal-independent potential parameters of Sangster and Atwood (1978). Results indicate that appreciable differences exist between barrier heights for migration of cations and anions. While barrier heights for cations are generally lower than for anions in alkali halides of NaCl structure, the opposite is true in alkali halides of CsCl structure.

A new theoretical equation for interaction parameter in multicomponent metallic solutions is developed using the pseudopotential formalism coupled with the free energy of the hard sphere system. The approximate expression for the pseudopotential term is given in terms of the heat of solution at infinite dilution, to allow easy evaluation of the interaction parameter in various multicomponent systems. This theory has been applied to 23 non-ferrous alloys based on Pb, Sn, Bi and indium. Comparison with the results of previous theoretical calculations using only the hard sphere model suggests that the inclusion of the pseudopotential term yields a quantitatively more correct prediction of interaction parameters in multicomponent metallic solutions. Numerical calculations were also made for 320 Fe-base solutions relevant to steelmaking and the agreement between calculation and experimental data appears reasonable, with 90% reliability in predicting the correct sign.

Thermodynamics of Cr-Mn alloys have been studied by Eremenko et al (l) using a fused salt e.m.f.technique. Their results indicate positive deviations from ideality at 1023 K. Kaufman (2) has independently estimated negative enthaipy and excess entropy for the b.c.c. Cr-Mn alloys, such that at high temperatures, the entropy term predominates over the enthalpy term giving positive deviations from ideality. Recently the thermodynamic properties of the alloys have been measured by 3acob (3) using a Knudsen cell technique in the temperature range of 1200 to 1500 K. The results indicate mild negative deviations from ideality over the entire composition range. Because of the differences in the reported results and Mn being a volatile component in the alloys which leads to surface depletion under a dynamic set up, an isopiestic technique is used to measure the properties of the alloys.

The electrochemical properties of the film-covered anode/solution interface in the magnesium/ manganese dioxide dry cell have been evaluated. The most plausible electrical equivalent circuit description of the Mg/solution interface with the passive film intact, has been identified. These results are based on the analysis of ac impedance and voltage transient measurements made on the dry cell under conditions which cause no damage to the protective passive film on the anode. The study demonstrates the complementary character of impedance and transient measurements when widely different frequency ranges are sampled in each type of investigation. The values and temperature dependence of the anode-film resistance, film capacitance, double-layer capacitance and charge-transfer resistance of the film-covered magnesium/solution interface have been determined. The magnitude of these values and its implications in understanding the important performance aspects of the magnesium/manganese dioxide dry cell are discussed. The study may be extended, in principle, to Li, Al and Ca batteries.

The thermodynamic activity of sodium oxide (Na2O) in the Nasicon solid solution series, Na1+xZr2SixO12, has been measured in the temperature range 7001100 K using solid state galvanic cells: Pt|CO2 + O2|Na2CO3?Na1+xZr2SixP3-xO12?(Y2O3)ZrO2?In + In2O3|Ta, Pt for 1 = ? = 2.5, and Pt?CO2 + O2?Na2CO3?ß-alumina?Na1+xZr2SixP3-xO12?Ar + O2?Pt for x = 0, 0.5, 2.5, and 3. The former cell, where the Nasicon solid solution is used as an electrolyte along with yttria-stabilized zirconia, is well suited for Nasicon compositions with high ionic conductivity. In the latter cell, ß-alumina is used as an electrolyte and the Nasicon solid solution forms an electrode. The chemical potential of Na2O is found to increase monotonically with x at constant temperature. The partial entropy of Na2O decreases continuously with x. However, the partial enthalpy exhibits a maximum at x = 2. This suggests that the binding energy is minimum at the composition where ionic conductivity and cell volume have maximum values.

The activity of K sub 2 O in a mixture of alpha -alumina and potassium beta -alumina has been determined using a solid state galvanic cell in the temperature range 600-1000K. The cell is written such that the right hand electrode is positive. The solid electrolyte consisted of a dispersion of alpha -alumina ( approx 15 vol.%) in a matrix of K beta -alumina. The emf of the cell was found to be reversible and to vary linearly with temperature. From the emf and auxiliary data on In sub 2 O sub 3 and K sub 2 O from the literature, the activity of K sub 2 O in the two-phase mixture is obtained. The standard free energy of formation of K beta -alumina from component oxides is given. Graphs.

We investigate the chemical weathering processes and fluxes in a small experimental watershed (SEW) through a modelling approach. The study site is the Mule Hole SEW developed on a gneissic basement located in the climatic gradient of the Western Ghats, South India. The model couples a lumped hydrological model simulating the water budget at the watershed scale to the WITCH model estimating the dissolution/precipitation rates of minerals using laboratory kinetic laws. Forcing functions and parameters of the simulation are defined by the field data. The coupled model is calibrated with stream and groundwater compositions through the testing of a large range of smectite solubility and abundance in the soil horizons. We found that, despite the low abundance of smectite in the dominant soil type of the watershed (4 vol.%), their net dissolution provides 75% of the export of dissolved silica, while primary silicate mineral dissolution releases only 15% of this flux. Overall, smectites (modelled as montmorillonites) are not stable under the present day climatic conditions. Furthermore, the dissolution of trace carbonates in the saprolitic horizon provides 50% of the calcium export at the watershed scale. Modelling results show the contrasted behavior of the two main soil types of the watershed: red soils (88% of the surface) are provider of calcium, while black soils (smectite-rich and characterized by a lower drainage) consumes calcium through overall carbonate precipitation. Our model results stress the key role played by minor/accessory minerals and by the thermodynamic properties of smectite minerals, and by the drainage of the weathering profiles on the weathering budget of a tropical watershed. A solid-state electrochemical cell, with yttria-stabilized zirconia as the electrolyte and pure O-2 gas at 0.1 MPa as the reference electrode, has been used to measure the oxygen chemical potential corresponding to the equilibrium between beta-Rh2O3 and RhO2 in the temperature range from 850 to 1050K. Using standard Gibbs energy of formation of beta-Rh2O3 available in the literature and the measured oxygen potential, the standard Gibbs free energy of formation of RhO2 is derived as a function of temperature: Delta G(f)degrees(RhO2)(+/- 71)/J mol(-1) = 238,418 + 179.89T Using an estimated value of Delta C-p degrees; for the formation reaction of RhO2 from its elements, the standard enthalpy of formation, standard entropy and isobaric heat capacity of RhO2 at 298.15 K are evaluated: Delta H-f degrees (298.15 K)(+/- 164)/kJ mol(-1) = -244.94, S degrees (298.15 K)(+/- 3.00)/J mol(-1) K-1 = 45.11 and C-p degrees(298.15 K)(+/- 2.6)1mol(-1) K-1 =64.28. Results are reported of comparative measurements made in 14 HV (high-voltage) laboratories in ten different countries. The theory of the proposed methods of characterizing the dynamic behavior is given, and the parameters to be used are discussed. Comparative measurements made using 95 systems based on 53 dividers are analyzed. This analysis shows that many of the system now in use, even though they fulfil the basic response requirements of the standards, do not meet the accuracy requirements. Because no transfer measurements were made between laboratories, there is no way to detect similar errors in both the system under test and the reference system. Hence, the situation may be worse than reported. This has led to the recommendation that comparative measurements should be the main route for quantifying industrial impulse measuring systems
