The magnetic properties of carbon nanotube encapsulated nickel nanowires (C. E. nanowires of diameter similar to 10 nm), and its comparison to other forms of Ni are carried out in this work. The saturation magnetization (M-s) and coercivity (H-c) for C. E. nanowires are 1.0 emu/g and 230 Oe. The temperature dependence of coercivity follows T-0.77 dependence indicating a superparamagnetic behavior. The field-cooled and zero-field-cooled plots indicate that the blocking temperature (T-B) similar to 300 K. These altered magnetic properties of C. E. nanowires are mainly due to the nanoscale confinement effect from carbon nanotube encapsulation. The shape and magnetic environment enhance the total magnetic anisotropy of C. E. nanowires by a factor of four.

We report the synthesis as well as structural and physical properties of the bulk polycrystalline FeTe and FeTe0.5Se0.5 compounds. These samples are synthesised by the solid state-reaction method via vacuum encapsulation. Both studied compounds are crystallized in a tetragonal phase with space group P4/nmm. The parent FeTe compound shows an anomaly in resistivity measurement at around 78 K, which is due to the structural change along with a magnetic phase transition. The superconductivity in the FeTe0.5Se0.5 sample at 13 K is confirmed by the resistivity measurements. DC magnetisation along with an isothermal (M-H) loop shows that FeTe0.5Se0.5 possesses bulk superconductivity. The upper critical field is estimated through resistivity rho (T,H) measurements using Gingzburg-Landau (GL) theory and is above 50 T with 50 % resistivity drop criterion. The origin of the resistive transition broadening under magnetic field is investigated by thermally activated flux flow. The magnetic field dependence of the activation energy of the flux motion is discussed.

Compositions with x <= 0.30 in the system (1- x)Pb(Zro(0.52)Ti(0.48))O-3-(x)BiFeO3 were synthesized by sol-gel method. Rietveld analysis of X-ray diffraction data reveals tetragonal structure (P4mm) for x <= 0.05 and monoclinic (Cm) phase along with the existence of tetragonal phase for 0.10 <= x <= 0.25 and monoclinic phase for x = 0.30. Transformation of E(2TO) and E + B1 vibrational modes in the range 210-250 cm(-1) (present for x <= 0.25) into A' + A `' modes at similar to 236 cm(-1) for x = 0.30, and occurrence of new vibrational modes A' and A `' in Raman spectra for x >= 0.10 unambiguously support the presence of monoclinic phase. Occurrence of remnant polarisation and enhanced magnetization with concentration of BiFeO3 indicates superior multiferroic properties. Variation of magneto-capacitance with applied magnetic field is a strong evidence of magneto-electric multiferroic coupling in these materials. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Strong magnetoelectric (ME) interaction was exhibited at both dc and microwave frequencies in a lead-free multiferroic particulate composites of Na0.5Bi0.5TiO3 (NBT) and MnFe2O4 (MFO) multiferroic, which were prepared by sol-gel route. The room temperature permeability measurements were carried out in the frequency range of 1 MHz-1 GHz. A systematic study of structural, magnetic and ME properties were undertaken. The room temperature ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) was studied. Strong ME coupling is demonstrated in 70NBT-30MFO composite by an electrostatically tunable FMR field shift up to 428 Oe (at E = 4 kV/cm), which increases to a large value of 640 Oe at E = 8 kV/cm. Furthermore, these lead-free multiferroic composites exhibiting electrostatically induced magnetic resonance field at microwave frequencies provide great opportunities for electric field tunable microwave devices.

Bi1-xCaxMnO3 (BCMO) thin films with x = 0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3 and 0.4 are successfully deposited on the n-type Si (100) substrate at two different temperatures of 400 degrees C and 800 degrees C using RF magnetron sputtering. The stoichiometry of the films and oxidation state of the elements have been described by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis. Dielectric measurement depicts the insulating property of BCMO films. Magnetic and ferroelectric studies confirm the significant enhancement in spin orientation as well as electric polarization at room temperature due to incorporation of Ca2+ ions into BiMnO3 films. The BCMO (x = 0.2) film grown at 400 degrees C shows better magnetization (M-sat) and polarization (P-s) with the measured values of 869 emu / cc and 6.6 mu(C)/cm(2) respectively than the values of the other prepared films. Thus the realization of room temperature ferromagnetic and ferroelectric ordering in Ca2+ ions substituted BMO films makes potentially interesting for spintronic device applications. Pyrophosphate cathodes have been recently reported as a competent family of insertion compounds for sodium-ion batteries. In the current study, we have investigated the binary Na2 - x(Fe1 - yMny)P2O7 (0 <= y <= 1) pyrophosphate family, synthesized by the classical solid-state method. They form a continuous solid solution maintaining triclinic P-1 (#2) symmetry. The local structural coordination differs mainly by different degrees of Na site occupancy and preferential occupation of the Fe2 site by Mn. The structural and magnetic properties of these mixed-metal pyrophosphate phases have been studied. In each case, complete Fe3+/Fe2+ redox activity has been obtained centered at 3 V vs. Na. The Fe3+/Fe2+ redox process involves multiple steps between 2.5 and 3 V owing to Na-cation ordering during electrochemical cycling, which merge to form a broad single Fe3+/Fe2+ redox peak upon progressive Mn-doping. A series of Bi1-xEuxOX (X = F and Br; x = 0, 0.01, 0.03 and 0.05) phosphors were synthesized at relatively low temperature and short duration (500 degrees C, 1 h). Rietveld refinement results verified that all the compounds were crystallized in the tetragonal structure with space group P4/nmm (no. 129). Photoluminescence spectra exhibit characteristic luminescence D-5(0) -> F-7(J) (J = 0-4) intra-4f shell Eu3+ ion transitions. The magnetic dipole (D-5(0) -> F-7(1)) transition dominates the emission of BiOF:Eu3+, while the electric dipole (D-5(0) -> F-7(2)) peak was stronger in BiOBr:Eu3+ phosphors. The evaluated CIE color coordinates for Bi0.95Eu0.05OBr (0.632, 0.358) are close to the commercial Y2O3:Eu3+ (0.645, 0.347) and Y2O2S:Eu3+ (0.647, 0.343) red phosphors. Intensity parameters (Omega(2), Omega(4)) and various radiative properties such as transition rates (A), branching ratios (beta), stimulated emission cross-section (sigma(e)), gain bandwidth (sigma(e) x Delta lambda(eff)) and optical gain (sigma(e) x tau) were calculated using the Judd-Ofelt theory. It was observed that BiOBr:Eu3+ phosphors have a long lifetime (tau) and better optical gain (sigma(e) x tau) as compared to reported Eu3+ doped materials. Furthermore, these compounds exhibit excellent photocatalytic activity for the degradation of rhodamine B dye under visible light irradiation. The determined radiative properties and photocatalytic results revealed that BiOBr:Eu3+ phosphors have potential applications in energy and environmental remedies, such as to develop red phosphors for white light-emitting diodes, red lasers and to remove toxic organic industrial effluents.

We have investigated structural, dielectric, and magnetic properties of polycrystalline double perovskite Nd2NiMnO6 compound. The compound crystallizes in monoclinic P2(1)/n symmetry and is partially B-site disordered depending on the synthesis conditions. It undergoes second-order ferromagnetic transition at 192K and shows glassy behaviour at low temperature. The glassy phase is due to anti-site disorder within the homogeneous sample. Temperature and frequency dependent dielectric measurements reveal colossal values of dielectric constant and is best interpreted using Maxwell-Wagner interfacial polarization model. Impedance spectroscopy has been used to analyse the intrinsic dielectric response. This enabled us to differentiate the conduction process at the grain and grain boundaries. Arrhenius behaviour is favoured at the grain boundary, while variable range hopping mechanism is considered most suitable within the grain region. dc conductivity measurements corroborate variable range hopping conduction. We report structural, magnetic, and dielectric properties of the perovskite compound Pr1-xYxMnO3 (0.1 <= x <= 0.4) studied using dc magnetization, ac susceptibility, neutron powder diffraction, and dielectric techniques. These compounds crystallize in orthorhombic space group (Pnma) in the temperature range 5-300 K. The Mn-O-Mn bond angle decreases with the Y substitution along with an increase in the Jahn-Teller distortion. The Jahn-Teller distortion for Pr0.9Y0.1MnO3 shows an anomalous change near 50 K, below which it falls sharply. Neutron powder diffraction patterns of all reported compositions at low temperature constitute additional magnetic Bragg peaks that suggest magnetic ordering. Magnetic reflections were indexed in the nuclear lattice with the propagation vector k = (0, 0, 0). Rietveld refinement of powder patterns conform to A type antiferromagnetic ordering where moments are aligned ferromagnetically in a-c plane and coupled nearly antiferromagnetically along b-axis resulting in a net ferromagnetic component along the b-direction. The antiferromagnetic transition temperature was deduced from dc magnetization and ac susceptibility data. The transition temperature decreases by nearly 22 K (from 81 K to 59 K) as yttrium content (x) increases from 0.1 to 0.4. Measurements reveal strong frequency dispersion in dielectric constant and dielectric loss. Activation energy and relaxation time are estimated from the Arrhenius plot. It is further shown that relaxation behaviour is altered with yttrium doping concentration. (C) 2015 AIP Publishing LLC.

Nanoscale materials show different properties compared to bulk materials. Due to the size dependent properties the nanoscale materials have potential applications in industry. In this paper the size dependent magnetic properties of Nd0.7Ca0.3MnO3 nanomanganite have been investigated. Nd0.7Ca0.3MnO3 nanoparticles were prepared by low temperature sol-gel method. X-ray diffraction (XRD), Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) and EDAX techniques were used to understand the structure, grain size and composition. Nanoparticles prepared were of the sizes 15 nm, 19 nm and 25 nm respectively. SQUID magnetometer was used to study the magnetic behavior of the nanoparticles. Field cooled (FC) and zero field cooled (ZFC) magnetization of all the nanosamples with respect to temperature was studied and compared. We have observed drastic changes in magnetic properties of 15 nm particles compared to the other nanoparticles. The `charge order peak' was seen to have disappeared in 15 nm particles while it was present in the other nanoparticles. All the nano particles exhibit superparamagnetism whose blocking temperature decreases as a function of decreasing particle size. The possible reasons for the influence of the particle size on the magnetic properties are discussed.

Conducting polymer/ferrite nanocomposites with an organized structure provide a new functional hybrid between organic and inorganic materials. The most popular among the conductive polymers is the polyaniline due to its wide application in different fields. In the present work nickel ferrite nanoparticles were prepared by sol-gel citrate-nitrate method. Polyaniline/nickel ferrite nanocomposites were synthesized by a simple general and inexpensive in-situ polymerization in the presence of nickel ferrite nanoparticles. The effects of nickel ferrite nanoparticles on the DC-electrical and magnetic properties of polyaniline were investigated. The structural, morphological and thermal stability of nanocomposites were characterized by X-ray diffraction, FTIR, scanning electron micrograph and TGA. The DC conductivity of polyaniline/nickel ferrite nanocomposites have been measured as a function of temperature in the range of 80K to 300K. The magnetic properties of the nanocomposites were measured using vibrating sample magnetometer in the temperature range 300-10K up to 30 kOe magnetic field.

Nanocrystalline Mn1-xZnxFe2O4 (x = 0, 0.1, 0.3, 0.5, 0.7, 0.9, 1.0) were prepared via solution combustion method. Structural and morphology of Mn-Zn ferrites were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM). Magnetic properties were carried out using vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM) at room temperature (RT) up to maximum field of 1.5 T. The room temperature real and imaginary part of permeability(mu' and mu'') has been measured in the frequency range of 1MHz to 1GHz. The room temperature XRD patterns exhibits the spinel cubic (Fm-3m) structure and broad XRD patterns shows the presence of nanoparticles. The imaginary part of the permeability (mu'') gradually increased with the frequency and took a broad maximum at a certain frequency, where the real permeability (mu') rapidly decreases, which is known as natural resonance. The coercive filed values are low, hence probability of domain rotation is also lower and the magnetization decreased with zinc substitution. The values of mu' and mu'' increases sharply, attained a maximum and then decreases with zinc content.

Ground state magnetic properties are studied by incorporating the super-exchange interaction (J(se)) in the spin-dependent Falicov-Kimball model (FKM) between localized (f-) electrons on a triangular lattice for half filled case. Numerical diagonalization and Monte-Carlo simulation are used to study the ground state magnetic properties. We have found that the magnetic moment of (d-) and (f-) electrons strongly depend on the value of Hund's exchange (J), super-exchange interaction (J(se)) and also depends on the number of (d-) electrons (N-d). The ground state changes from antiferromagnetic (AFM) to ferromagnetic (FM) state as we decrease (N-d). Also the density of d electrons at each site depends on the value of J and J(se).

GdxZn1-xO (x = 0, 0.02, 0.04 and 0.06) nanostructures have been synthesized using sol-gel technique and characterized to understand their structural and magnetic properties. X-ray diffraction (XRD) results show that Gd (0, 2, 4 and 6 %)-doped ZnO nanostructures crystallized in the wurtzite structure having space group C3(v) (P6(3)mc). Photoluminescence and Raman studies of Gd-doped ZnO powder show the formation of singly ionized oxygen vacancies. X-ray absorption spectroscopy reveals that Gd replaces the Zn atoms in the host lattice and maintains the crystal symmetry with slight lattice distortion. Gd L-3-edge spectra reveal charge transfer between Zn and Gd dopant ions. O K-edge spectra also depict the charge transfer through the oxygen bridge (Gd-O-Zn). Weak magnetic ordering is observed in all Gd-doped ZnO samples.

Gadolinium oxide (Gd2O3) nanotubes of micron length and average diameter 100 nm have been synthesized by a controlled template-assisted electrochemical deposition technique. Structure and morphology of the synthesized nanotubes have been well characterized by using microscopy and spectroscopy analyses. HRTEM and XRD analysis revealed the crystalline planes of Gd2O3 nanotubes. Magnetic measurements of the aligned Gd2O3 nanotubes have been performed for both parallel and perpendicular orientations of the magnetic field with respect to the axis of the Gd2O3 nanotube array. Large bifurcation in ZFC-FC over the regime of 2-320 K without any signature of long range magnetic ordering confirms the presence of SPM clusters in Gd2O3 nanotubes. Also, large magnetocaloric effect is observed in the cryogenic temperature regime. No anisotropy is seen at the low temperature region but is found to evolve with temperature and becomes significant 300 K. These nanotubes can be considered as promising candidates for magnetic refrigeration at cryogenic temperature. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
