The conformations of Boc-l-Phe-(AiB)3-OH (1) and Boc-l-Phe-(Aib)3-OMe (2) which correspond to the amino terminal sequence of the emerimicins and antiamoebins have been studied in solution using 270 MHz 1H n.m.r. In dimethyl sulphoxide solution both peptides show the presence of two strongly solvent shielded Aib NH groups, consistent with a consecutive β-turn conformation, involving the Aib(3) and Aib(4) NH groups in intramolecular 4 → I hydrogen bonds. This folded conformation is maintained for 2 in chloroform solution. Nuclear Overhauser effect studies provide evidence for a Type II Phe-Aib β-turn. An X-ray diffraction study of Boc-(d,l)-Phe-(Aib)3-OH establishes a single type III(III′) β-turn conformation with Aib(2)-Aib(3) as the corner residues. A single intramolecular 4 → I hydrogen bond between Phe(I) CO and Aib(4) NH groups is observed in the crystal. The solution conformation may incorporate a consecutive type II-III′ structure for the Phe(1)-Aib(2)-Aib(3) segment, with the initial type II β-turn being destabilized by intermolecular interactions in the solid state.

The peaking of most oil reserves and impending climate change are critically driving the adoption of solar photovoltaic's (PV) as a sustainable renewable and eco-friendly alternative. Ongoing material research has yet to find a breakthrough in significantly raising the conversion efficiency of commercial PV modules. The installation of PV systems for optimum yield is primarily dictated by its geographic location (latitude and available solar insolation) and installation design (tilt, orientation and altitude) to maximize solar exposure. However, once these parameters have been addressed appropriately, there are other depending factors that arise in determining the system performance (efficiency and output). Dust is the lesser acknowledged factor that significantly influences the performance of the PV installations. This paper provides an appraisal on the current status of research in studying the impact of dust on PV system performance and identifies challenges to further pertinent research. A framework to understand the various factors that govern the settling/assimilation of dust and likely mitigation measures have been discussed in this paper. (C) 2010 Elsevier Ltd. Grain growth kinetics was studied for commercially pure magnesium subjected to equal channel angular extrusion (ECAE). The specimens were ECAE processed upto 4 passes at 523 K following all the three important routes, namely A, 13, and C. Texture and microstructures of the samples were studied using Electron Back Scattered Diffraction (EBSD) technique in a Field Emission Gun Scanning Electron Microscope (FEG-SEM). It was observed that the grain size significantly reduces after ECAE. ECAE process produces a slightly rotated B and C-2 fiber. Static annealing leads to normal grain growth with unimodal distribution of grains through out the temperature range. Average activation energy for grain growth in the temperature range studied is found to be less than the activation energy for lattice diffusion and grain boundary diffusion of magnesium. No significant change in texture during isochronal annealing for 1 hour i.e., the predominant deformation texture remains same.

The vacuum ultraviolet circular dichroism spectrum of an isolated 4 → 1 hydrogen bonded β-turn is reported. The observed spectrum of N-acetyl-Pro-Gly-Leu-OH at − 40°C in trifluoroethanol is in good agreement with the theoretically calculated CD spectrum of the β-turn conformation. This spectrum, particularly the presence of a strong negative band around 180 nm and a large ratio [θ]201/[θ]225, can be taken as a characteristic feature of the isolated β-turn conformation. These CD spectral features can thus be used to distinguish the β-turn conformation from the β-structure in solution.

The three-dimensional (3D) NMR solution structure (MeOH) of the highly hydrophobic δ-conotoxin δ-Am2766 from the molluscivorous snail Conus amadis has been determined. Fifteen converged structures were obtained on the basis of 262 distance constraints, 25 torsion-angle constraints, and ten constraints based on disulfide linkages and H-bonds. The root-mean-square deviations (rmsd) about the averaged coordinates of the backbone (N, Cα, C) and (all) heavy atoms were 0.62±0.20 and 1.12±0.23 Å, respectively. The structures determined are of good stereochemical quality, as evidenced by the high percentage (100%) of backbone dihedral angles that occupy favorable and additionally allowed regions of the Ramachandran map. The structure of δ-Am2766 consists of a triple-stranded antiparallel β-sheet, and of four turns. The three disulfides form the classical ‘inhibitory cysteine knot’ motif. So far, only one tertiary structure of a δ-conotoxin has been reported; thus, the tertiary structure of δ-Am2766 is the second such example.Another Conus peptide, Am2735 from C. amadis, has also been purified and sequenced. Am2735 shares 96% sequence identity with δ-Am2766. Unlike δ-Am2766, Am2735 does not inhibit the fast inactivation of Na+ currents in rat brain Nav1.2 Na+ channels at concentrations up to 200 nM.

In receive antenna selection (AS), only signals from a subset of the antennas are processed at any time by the limited number of radio frequency (RF) chains available at the receiver. Hence, the transmitter needs to send pilots multiple times to enable the receiver to estimate the channel state of all the antennas and select the best subset. Conventionally, the sensitivity of coherent reception to channel estimation errors has been tackled by boosting the energy allocated to all pilots to ensure accurate channel estimates for all antennas. Energy for pilots received by unselected antennas is mostly wasted, especially since the selection process is robust to estimation errors. In this paper, we propose a novel training method uniquely tailored for AS that transmits one extra pilot symbol that generates accurate channel estimates for the antenna subset that actually receives data. Consequently, the transmitter can selectively boost the energy allocated to the extra pilot. We derive closed-form expressions for the proposed scheme's symbol error probability for MPSK and MQAM, and optimize the energy allocated to pilot and data symbols. Through an insightful asymptotic analysis, we show that the optimal solution achieves full diversity and is better than the conventional method.

An expression is developed for the variation of the critical solution temperature of a binary liquid system when a third component (dopant) is added, using an extension of the regular solution theory. The model can be used for UCST, LCST and for closed loop systems and has the correct features in the limiting cases.

A brief survey of the historical development of a photoelectrochemical solar cell is given. The principle and future of solar chargeable battery is compared with a wet and a dry type photovoltaic cell. A solar chargeable battery, with or without a membrane and with an aqueous solution or with solid-state electrolytes is discussed. A new unique type of configuration “Sharon-Schottky” junction solar cell is described which can be used either as a charger for any secondary batteries or could be used for photoelectrolysis of water. All these configurations and their relative merits are discussed. A review on the various semiconductors and types of solar chargeable batteries is made. Finally, a conclusion is drawn for future direction of research for developing an economically viable photoelectrochemical (PEC) solar cell based on either the principle of a solar charger (to charge a Ni---Cd battery or lead—acid battery) and/or solar chargeable battery with or without without a membrane. Some new innovative ideas for the preparation of materials is discussed. The entire discussion is geared towards answering a relevant question: what has gone wrong to result in the stagnation and failure in commercialization of a PEC based solar cell?

This paper considers nonzero-sum multicriteria games with continuous kernels. Solution concepts based on the notions of Pareto optimality, equilibrium, and security are extended to these games. Separate necessary and sufficient conditions and existence results are presented for equilibrium, Pareto-optimal response, and Pareto-optimal security strategies of the players.

An exact solution is derived for a boundary-value problem for Laplace's equation which is a generalization of the one occurring in the course of solution of the problem of diffraction of surface water waves by a nearly vertical submerged barrier. The method of solution involves the use of complex function theory, the Schwarz reflection principle, and reduction to a system of two uncoupled Riemann-Hilbert problems. Known results, representing the reflection and transmission coefficients of the water wave problem involving a nearly vertical barrier, are derived in terms of the shape function.

Hybrid frictional-kinetic equations are used to predict the velocity, grain temperature, and stress fields in hoppers. A suitable choice of dimensionless variables permits the pseudo-thermal energy balance to be decoupled from the momentum balance. These balances contain a small parameter, which is analogous to a reciprocal Reynolds number. Hence an approximate semi-analytical solution is constructed using perturbation methods. The energy balance is solved using the method of matched asymptotic expansions. The effect of heat conduction is confined to a very thin boundary layer near the exit, where it causes a marginal change in the temperature. Outside this layer, the temperature T increases rapidly as the radial coordinate r decreases. In particular, the conduction-free energy balance yields an asymptotic solution, valid for small values of r, of the form T proportional r-4. There is a corresponding increase in the kinetic stresses, which attain their maximum values at the hopper exit. The momentum balance is solved by a regular perturbation method. The contribution of the kinetic stresses is important only in a small region near the exit, where the frictional stresses tend to zero. Therefore, the discharge rate is only about 2.3% lower than the frictional value, for typical parameter values. As in the frictional case, the discharge rate for deep hoppers is found to be independent of the head of material.

We report the rapid solution combustion synthesis and characterization of Ag-substituted LaMnO3 phases at relatively low temperature using oxalyl dihydrazide, as fuel. Structural parameters were refined by the Rietveld method using powder X-ray diffraction data. While the parent LaMnO3 crystallizes in the orthorhombic structure, the Ag-substituted compounds crystallize in the rhombohedral symmetry. On increasing Ag-content, unit cell volume and Mn-O-Mn bond angle decreases. The Fourier transform infra red spectrum shows two absorption bands corresponding to Mn-O stretching vibration (v(s) mode) and Mn-O-Mn deformation vibration (v(b) mode) around 600 cm(-1) and 400 cm(-1) for the compositions x = 0.0, 0.05 and 0.10, respectively. Electrical resistivity measurements reveal that composition-controlled metal to insulator transition, with the maximum metal to insulator being 280 K for the composition La0.75Ag0.25MnO3. Increase in magnetic moment was observed with increase in Ag-content. The maximum magnetic moment of 35 emu/g was observed for the composition La0.80Ag0.20MnO3. (C) 2010 Elsevier Ltd. An exact solution to the problem of time-dependent motion of a viscous fluid in an annulus with porous walls is obtained under the assumption that the rate of suction at one wall is equal to the rate of injection at the other. Finite Hankel transform is used to obtain a closed-form solution for the axial velocity. The average axial velocity profiles are depicted graphically.
