This paper proposes a new hybrid nine-level inverter topology for IM drive. The nine-level structure is realized by using two three-phase two-level inverters fed by isolated DC voltage sources and six H-bridges fed by capacitors. The number of switches required in this topology is only 36 where as the conventional nine-level topologies require 48 switches. The voltages across the capacitors, feeding the H-bridges that operate at asymmetric voltages, are effectively balanced by making use of the switching state redundancies. In this topology, the requirement of DC link voltage is only half of the maximum magnitude of the voltage space vector. As the two-level inverters are powered by isolated voltage sources, the circulation of triplen harmonic current in the motor winding is prevented. The proposed drive system is capable of functioning in three-level mode in case of any switch failure in H-bridges. The performance of the proposed topology in the entire modulation range is verified by simulation study and experiment.
A Novel VSI- and CSI-Fed Active-Reactive Induction Motor Drive with Sinusoidal Voltages and Currents
Resumo:
Till date load-commutated inverter (LCI)-fed synchronous motor drive configuration is popular in high power applications (>10 MW). The leading power factor operation of synchronous motor by excitation control offers this simple and rugged drive structure. On the contrary, LCI-fed induction motor drive is absent as it always draws lagging power factor current. Therefore, complicated commutation circuit is required to switch off thyristors for a current source inverter (CSI)-driven induction motor. It poses the major hindrance to scale up the power rating of CSI-fed induction motor drive. Anew power topology for LCI-fed induction motor drive for medium-voltage drive application is proposed. A new induction machine (active-reactive induction machine) with two sets of three-phase winding is introduced as a drive motor. The proposed power configuration ensures sinusoidal voltage and current at the motor terminals. The total drive power is shared among a thyristor-based LCI, an insulated gate bipolar transistor (IGBT)-based two-level voltage source inverter (VSI), and a three-level VSI. The benefits of SCRs and IGBTs are explored in the proposed drive. Experimental results from a prototype drive verify the basic concepts of the drive.

Digital human modeling (DHM) involves modeling of structure, form and functional capabilities of human users for ergonomics simulation. This paper presents application of geometric procedures for investigating the characteristics of human visual capabilities which are particularly important in the context mentioned above. Using the cone of unrestricted directions through the pupil on a tessellated head model as the geometric interpretation of the clinical field-of-view (FoV), the results obtained are experimentally validated. Estimating the pupil movement for a given gaze direction using Listing's Law, FoVs are re-computed. Significant variation of the FoV is observed with the variation in gaze direction. A novel cube-grid representation, which integrated the unit-cube representation of directions and the enhanced slice representation has been introduced for fast and exact point classification for point visibility analysis for a given FoV. Computation of containment frequency of every grid-cell for a given set of FoVs enabled determination of percentile-based FoV contours for estimating the visual performance of a given population. This is a new concept which makes visibility analysis more meaningful from ergonomics point-of-view. The algorithms are fast enough to support interactive analysis of reasonably complex scenes on a typical desktop computer. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

We present a compliant mechanism kit as a parallel to the kits available for rigid-body mechanisms. The kit consists of flexible beams and connectors that can be easily hand-assembled using snap fits. The mechanisms assembled using the kit accurately capture the aspects of the topology, shape, and size of joint-free compliant mechanisms. Thus, the kit enables designers to conceive and design new, practicable, single-piece compliant mechanisms that do not require assembly. The concept of the kit also resolves a discrepancy in the finite element (FE) modeling of beam-based compliant mechanisms. The discrepancy arises when two or more beams are joined at one point and thus leading to increased stiffness. After resolving this discrepancy, this work extends the topology optimization to automatically generate designs that can be assembled with the kit for quick and easy validation instead of time-consuming prototyping. Thus, the kit and the accompanying analysis and optimal synthesis procedures comprise a self-contained educational as well as a research and practice toolset for compliant mechanisms. The paper also illustrates how human creativity finds new ways of using the kit beyond the original intended use and how it enables even a novice to design compliant mechanisms. L-PGlu-(2-proPyl)-L-His-L-ProNH(2) (NP-647) is a CNS active thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH) analog with potential application in various CNS disorders including seizures. In the present study, mechanism of action for protective effect of NP-647 was explored by studying role of NP-647 on epileptiform activity and sodium channels by using patch-clamp methods. Epileptiform activity was induced in subicular pyramidal neurons of hippocampal slice of rat by perfusing 4-aminopyridine (4-AP) containing Mg(+2)-free normal artificial cerebrospinal fluid (nACSF). Increase in mean firing frequency was observed after perfusion of 4-AP and zero Mg(+2) (2.10+/-0.47 Hz) as compared with nACSF (0.12+/-0.08 Hz). A significant decrease in mean firing frequency (0.61+/-0.22 Hz), mean frequency of epileptiform events (0.03+/-0.02 Hz vs. 0.22+/-0.05 Hz of 4-AP+0 Mg), and average number of action potentials in paroxysmal depolarization shift-burst (2.54+/-1.21 Hz vs. 8.16+/-0.88 Hz of 4-AP +0 Mg) was observed. A significant reduction in peak dV/dt (246+/-19 mV ms(-1) vs. 297 18 mV ms-1 of 4-AP+0 Mg) and increase (1.332+/-0.018 ms vs. 1.292+/-0.019 ms of 4-AP+0 Mg) in time required to reach maximum depolarization were observed indicating role of sodium channels. Concentration-dependent depression of sodium current was observed after exposure to dorsal root ganglion neurons to NP-647. NP-647 at different concentrations (1, 3, and 10 mu M) depressed sodium current (15+/-0.5%, 50+/-2.6%, and 75+/-0.7%, respectively). However, NP-647 did not show change in the peak sodium current in CNa18 cells. Results of present study demonstrated potential of NP-647 in the inhibition of epileptiform activity by inhibiting sodium channels indirectly. (C) 2011 IBRO. Published by Elsevier Ltd. This paper presents a new algorithm for extracting Free-Form Surface Features (FFSFs) from a surface model. The extraction algorithm is based on a modified taxonomy of FFSFs from that proposed in the literature. A new classification scheme has been proposed for FFSFs to enable their representation and extraction. The paper proposes a separating curve as a signature of FFSFs in a surface model. FFSFs are classified based on the characteristics of the separating curve (number and type) and the influence region (the region enclosed by the separating curve). A method to extract these entities is presented. The algorithm has been implemented and tested for various free-form surface features on different types of free-form surfaces (base surfaces) and is found to correctly identify and represent the features irrespective of the type of underlying surface. The representation and extraction algorithm are both based on topology and geometry. The algorithm is data-driven and does not use any pre-defined templates. The definition presented for a feature is unambiguous and application independent. The proposed classification of FFSFs can be used to develop an ontology to determine semantic equivalences for the feature to be exchanged, mapped and used across PLM applications. One of the significant advancements in Nuclear Magnetic Resonance spectroscopy (NMR) in combating the problem of spectral complexity for deriving the structure and conformational information is the incorporation of additional dimension and to spread the information content in a two dimensional space. This approach together with the manipulation of the dynamics of nuclear spins permitted the designing of appropriate pulse sequences leading to the evolution of diverse multidimensional NMR experiments. The desired spectral information can now be extracted in a simplified and an orchestrated manner. The indirect detection of multiple quantum (MQ) NMR frequencies is a step in this direction. The MQ technique has been extensively used in the study of molecules aligned in liquid crystalline media to reduce spectral complexity and to determine molecular geometries. Unlike in dipolar coupled systems, the size of the network of scalar coupled spins is not big in isotropic solutions and the MQ 1H detection is not routinely employed, although there are specific examples of spin topology filtering. In this brief review, we discuss our recent studies on the development and application of multiple quantum correlation and resolved techniques for the analyses of proton NMR spectra of scalar coupled spins.

Symmetrized DMRG calculations on long oligomers of poly- para-phenylene (PPP) and poly-para-phenylene vinylene (PPV) systems within a `U-V' model have been carried out to obtain the one-photon, two-photon and singlet-triplet gaps in these systems. The extrapolated gaps (in eV) are 2.89, 3.76 and 2.72 in PPP and 3.01, 3.61 and 2.23 in PPV for the one- photon, two-photon and spin gaps respectively. By studying doped systems, we have obtained the exciton binding energies. The larger exciton binding energies, compared to strongly dimerized linear chains emphasizes the role of topology in these polymers. Bond orders, charge and spin correlations in the low-lying states bring out the similarities between the lowest one-photon, the lowest triplet and the lowest bipolaronic states in these systems. The two-photon state bond orders show evidence for strong localization of this excitation in both PPP and PPV systems.

A topology for voltage-space phasor generation equivalent to a five-level inverter for an open-end winding induction motor is presented. The open-end winding induction motor is fed from both ends by two three-level inverters. The three-level inverters are realised by cascading two two-level inverters. This inverter scheme does not experience neutral-point fluctuations. Of the two three-level inverters only one will be switching at any instant in the lower speed ranges. In the multilevel carrier-based SPWM used for the proposed drive, a progressive discrete DC bias depending on the speed range is given to the reference wave to reduce the inverter switchings. The drive is implemented and tested with a 1 HP open-end winding induction motor and experimental results are presented.

Boost converter is used to boost to solar powered battery voltage to 24V, further an automobile ignition coil was used to generate the high voltage pulse using fly-back topology. This design is aimed at retrofitting the existing catalytic converters with pulse assisted cleaning technique. In this paper we bring out a relative comparison of discharge plasma and plasma-adsorbent process at different gas flow rates. Activated alumina was used as adsorbent. The main emphasis is laid on the development of a compact pulse source from 12V battery, which is powered by the solar, for the removal of NOX from the filtered diesel engine exhaust.

Analytical solution is presented to convert a given driving-point impedance function (in s-domain) into a physically realisable ladder network with inductive coupling between any two sections and losses considered. The number of sections in the ladder network can vary, but its topology is assumed fixed. A study of the coefficients of the numerator and denominator polynomials of the driving-point impedance function of the ladder network, for increasing number of sections, led to the identification of certain coefficients, which exhibit very special properties. Generalised expressions for these specific coefficients have also been derived. Exploiting their properties, it is demonstrated that the synthesis method essentially turns out to be an exercise of solving a set of linear, simultaneous, algebraic equations, whose solution directly yields the ladder network elements. The proposed solution is novel, simple and guarantees a unique network. Presently, the formulation can synthesise a unique ladder network up to six sections.

In developing countries, a high rate of growth in the demand for electric energy is felt, and so the addition of new generating units becomes inevitable. In deregulated power systems, private generating stations are encouraged to add new generations. Some of the factors considered while placing a new generating unit are: availability of esources, ease of transmitting power, distance from the load centre, etc. Finding the most appropriate locations for generation expansion can be done by running repeated power flows and carrying system studies like analyzing the voltage profile, voltage stability, loss analysis, etc. In this paper a new methodology is proposed which will mainly consider the existing network topology. A concept of T-index is introduced in this paper, which considers the electrical distances between generator and load nodes. This index is used for ranking the most significant new generation expansion locations and also indicates the amount of permissible generations that can be installed at these new locations. This concept facilitates for the medium and long term planning of power generation expansions within the available transmission corridors. Studies carried out on an EHV equivalent 10-bus system and IEEE 30 bus systems are presented for illustration purposes.

We show with the aid of first-principles electronic structure calculations that suitable choice of the capping ligands may be an important control parameter for crystal structure engineering of nanoparticles. Our calculations on CdS nanocrystals reveal that the binding energy of model trioctylphosphine molecules on the (001) facets of zincblende nanocrystals is larger compared to that on wurtzite facets. Similarly, the binding energy of model cis-oleic acid is found to be dominant for the (10 (1) over bar0) facets of wurtzite structure. As a consequence, trioctylphosphine as a capping agent stabilizes the zincblende structure while cis-oleic acid stabilizes the wurtzite phase by influencing the surface energy, which has a sizable contribution to the energetics of a nanocrystal. Our detailed analysis suggests that the binding of molecules on the nanocrystalline facets depends on the surface topology of the facets, the coordination of the surface atoms where the capping molecule is likely to attach, and the conformation of the capping molecule.

In this work, we propose an approach for reducing radiated noise from `light' fluid-loaded structures, such as, for example, vibrating structures in air. In this approach, we optimize the structure so as to minimize the dynamic compliance (defined as the input power) of the structure. We show that minimizing the dynamic compliance results in substantial reductions in the radiated sound power from the structure. The main advantage of this approach is that the redesign to minimize the dynamic compliance moves the natural frequencies of the structure away from the driving frequency thereby reducing the vibration levels of the structure, which in turn results in a reduction in the radiated sound power as an indirect benefit. Thus, the need for an acoustic and the associated sensitivity analysis is completely bypassed (although, in this work, we do carry out an acoustic analysis to demonstrate the reduction in sound power levels), making the strategy efficient compared to existing strategies in the literature which try to minimize some measure of noise directly. We show the effectiveness of the proposed approach by means of several examples involving both topology and stiffener optimization, for vibrating beam, plate and shell-type structures.
