We report Doppler-only radar observations of Icarus at Goldstone at a transmitter frequency of 8510 MHz (3.5 cm wavelength) during 8-10 June 1996, the first radar detection of the object since 1968. Optimally filtered and folded spectra achieve a maximum opposite-circular (OC) polarization signal-to-noise ratio of about 10 and help to constrain Icarus' physical properties. We obtain an OC radar cross section of 0.05 km(2) (with a 35% uncertainty), which is less than values estimated by Goldstein (1969) and by Pettengill et al. (1969), and a circular polarization (SC/OC) ratio of 0.5+/-0.2. We analyze the echo power spectrum with a model incorporating the echo bandwidth B and a spectral shape parameter it, yielding a coupled constraint between B and n. We adopt 25 Hz as the lower bound on B, which gives a lower bound on the maximum pole-on breadth of about 0.6 km and upper bounds on the radar and optical albedos that are consistent with Icarus' tentative QS classification. The observed circular polarization ratio indicates a very rough near-surface at spatial scales of the order of the radar wavelength. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

Large amplitude stationary Rossby wave trains with wavelength in the range 50 degrees to 60 degrees longitude have been identified in the upper troposphere during May, through the analysis of 200 hPa wind anomalies. The spatial phase of these waves has been shown to differ by about 20 degrees of longitude between the dry and wet Indian monsoon years. It has been shown empirically that the Rossby waves are induced by the heat sources in the ITCZ. These heat sources appear in the Bay of Bengal and adjoining regions in May just prior to the onset of the Indian summer monsoon. The inter-annual spatial phase shift of the Rossby waves has been shown to be related to the shift in the deep convection in the zonal direction.

Starting from the time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau equations for a type II superconductor, we derive the equations of motion for the displacement field of a moving vortex lattice ignoring pinning and inertia. We show that it is linearly stable and, surprisingly, that it supports wavelike long-wavelength excitations arising not from inertia or elasticity but from the strain-dependent mobility of the moving lattice. It should be possible to image these waves, whose speeds are a few mu m/s, using fast scanning tunneling microscopy.

Thin films of ZnO, Li doped ZnO (ZLO) and multilayer of ZnO and ZLO (ZnO/ZLO) were grown on silicon and corning glass substrates by pulsed laser deposition technique. Single phase formation and the crystalline qualities of the films were analyzed by X-ray diffraction and Li composition in the film was investigated to be 15 wt% by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Raman spectrum reveals the hexagonal wurtzite structure of ZnO, ZLO and ZnO/ZLO multilayer and confirms the single phase formation. Films grown on corning glass shows more than 80% transmittance in the visible region and the optical band gaps were calculated to be 3.245, 3.26 and 3.22 eV for ZnO, ZLO and ZnO/ZLO, respectively. An efficient blue emission was observed in all films which were grown on silicon (1 0 0) substrate by photoluminescence (PL). PL measurements at different temperatures reveal that the PL emission intensity of ZnO/ZLO multilayer was weakly dependent on temperature as compared to the single layers of ZnO and ZLO and the wavelength of emission was independent of temperature. Our results indicate that ZnO/ZLO multilayer can be used for the fabrication of blue light emitting diodes. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The quantum yield of I*((2)p(1/2)) production from CH3I photolysis at 236 nm in the gas phase has been measured as 0.69 +/- 0.03. The implication is that direct excitation to the (1)Q(1) excited state is significant at this wavelength. The dynamics of I* formation at other excitation energies covering the entire A-band of absorption of CH3I has been discussed in the light of this measurement.

Microwave (MW) thawing of 2D frozen cylinders exposed to uniform plane waves from one face, is modeled using the effective heat capacity formulation with the MW power obtained from the electric field equations. Computations are illustrated for tylose (23% methyl cellulose gel) which melts over a range of temperatures giving rise to a mushy zone. Within the mushy region the dielectric properties are functions of the liquid volume fraction. The resulting coupled, time dependent non-linear equations are solved using the Galerkin finite element method with a fixed mesh. Our method efficiently captures the multiple connected thawed domains that arise due to the penetration of MWs in the sample. For a cylinder of diameter D, the two length scales that control the thawing dynamics are D/D-p and D/lambda(m), where D-p and lambda(m) are the penetration depth and wavelength of radiation in the sample respectively. For D/D-p, D/lambda(m) much less than 1 power absorption is uniform and thawing occurs almost simultaneously across the sample (Regime I). For D/D-p much greater than 1 thawing is seen to occur from the incident face, since the power decays exponentially into the sample (Regime III). At intermediate values, 0.2 < D/D-p, D/lambda(m) < 2.0 (Regime II) thawing occurs from the unexposed face at smaller diameters, from both faces at intermediate diameters and from the exposed and central regions at larger diameters. Average power absorption during thawing indicates a monotonic rise in Regime I and a monotonic decrease in Regime III. Local maxima in the average power observed for samples in Regime II are due to internal resonances within the sample. Thawing time increases monotonically with sample diameter and temperature gradients in the sample generally increase from Regime I to Regime III. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

The title compound, La14V6CuO36.5, was prepared from a stoichiometric mixture of La2O3,V2O5, and CuO at 1050-1080 degreesC. The compound forms transparent, pale green crystals and was characterized by wavelength dispersive spectroscopy and single crystal X-ray diffraction. The structure contains isolated VO43- tetrahedra and [OCuO](3-) sticks dispersed in a lanthanum oxide network. Films of La14V6CuO36.5 were grown on R-plane sapphire by using pulsed laser deposition. Rutherford backscattering spectroscopic and X-ray diffraction analyses of the films showed oriented growth of the title phase, a similar to5 eV optical band gap and n-type conductivity. The compound is an example of a transparent copper(I) oxide.

Single crystals of a-hopeite exhibiting high transparency were grown by single diffusion gel growth technique. Single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis reveals that the crystal belongs to orthorhombic system. The values of several structural and physical parameters have been determined for the grown crystal. The optical absorption study reveals the transparency of the crystal and is noticed in the entire visible region and the cut-off wavelength was found to be 230 nm. The optical band gap found to be at 3.25 eV. The dependence of extinction co-efficient (k) and the refractive index (n) on the wavelength was also shown. The dielectric constant and dielectric loss of the crystal was studied as a function of frequency and temperature. Transport properties of the grown crystal have been studied from the Cole-Cole plot. Several unsymmetrically substituted aromatic donor acceptor disulfides have been synthesized and analysed for their second order nonlinear optical properties. These molecules exhibit moderately high first hyperpolarizability (beta) with excellent transparency in the visible region. Most of the unsymmetrical disulfides have a cut-off wavelength below 420 nm. Calculations show that the molecules have an asymmetric charge distribution around the disulfide bond which is responsible for their high beta values. These results provide motivation for the design and synthesis of nonlinear optical chromophores with multiple disulfide bonds for large second order nonlinearity and excellent visible transparency.

Structural, optical and nanomechanical properties of nanocrystalline Zinc Telluride (ZnTe) films of thickness upto 10 microns deposited at room temperature on borosilicate glass substrates are reported. X-ray diffraction patterns reveal that the films were preferentially oriented along the (1 1 1) direction. The maximum refractive index of the films was 2.74 at a wavelength of 2000 nm. The optical band gap showed strong thickness dependence. The average film hardness and Young's modulus obtained from load-displacement curves and analyzed by Oliver-Pharr method were 4 and 70 GPa respectively. Hardness of (1 1 1) oriented ZnTe thin films exhibited almost 5 times higher value than bulk. The studies show clearly that the hardness increases with decreasing indentation size, for indents between 30 and 300 nm in depth indicating the existence of indentation size effect. The coefficient of friction for these films as obtained from the nanoscratch test was ~0.4.

Peristaltic transport of a micropolar fluid in a circular tube is studied under low Reynolds number and long wavelength approximations. The closed form solutions are obtained. for velocity, microrotation components, as well as the stream function and they contain new additional parameters namely, N the coupling number and m the micropolar parameter. In the case of free pumping (pressure difference Deltap = 0) the difference in pumping flux is observed to be very small for Newtonian and micropolar fluids but in the case of pumping (Deltap > 0) the characteristics are significantly altered for different N and m. It is observed that the peristalsis in micropolar fluids works as a pump against a greater pressure rise compared with a Newtonian fluid. Streamline patterns which depict trapping phenomena are presented for different parameter ranges. The limit on the trapping of the center streamline is obtained. The effects of N and m on friction force for different Deltap are discussed.

A novel wet-chemical precipitation method is optimized for the synthesis of ZnS nanocrystals doped with Cu+ and halogen. The nanoparticles were stabilized by capping with polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP). XRD studies show the phase singularity of ZnS particles having zinc-blende (cubic) structure. TEM as well as XRD line broadening indicate that the average crystallite size of undoped samples is similar to2 nm. The effects of change in stoichiometry and doping with Cu+ and halogen on the photoluminescence properties of ZnS nanophosphors have been investigated. Sulfur vacancy (Vs) related emission with peak maximum at 434 nm has been dominant in undoped ZnS nanoparticles. Unlike in the case of microcrystalline ZnS phosphor, incorporation of halogens in nanoparticles did not result V-Zn related self-activated emission. However, emission characteristics of nanophosphors have been changed with Cu+ activation due to energy transfer from vacancy centers to dopant centers. The use of halogen as co-activator helps to increase the solubility of Cu+ ions in ZnS lattice and also enhances the donor-acceptor type emission efficiency. With increase in Cu+ doping, Cu-Blue centers (CuZn-Cui+), which were dominant at low Cu+ concentrations, has been transformed into Cu-Green (Cu-Zn(-)) centers and the later is found to be situated near the surface regions of nanoparticles. From these studies we have shown that, by controlling the defect chemistry and suitable doping, photoluminescence emission tunability over a wide wavelength range, i.e., from 434 to 514 nm, can be achieved in ZnS nanophosphors. Altitude variation of aerosol properties over the Himalayan range inferred from spatial measurements
Resumo:
Altitude variations of the mass concentration of black carbon, number concentration of composite aerosols are examined along with the columnar spectral aerosol optical depths using state of the art instruments and the Angstrom parameters are inferred from the ground based measurements at several altitude levels, en route from Manora Peak, Nainital (similar to 1950 m above mean sea level) to a low altitude station Haldwani (similar to 330 m above mean sea level) at its foothill within an aerial distance of <10,000 m. The measurements were done during the winter months (November-February) of 2005, 2006 and 2007 under fair weather conditions. The results show a rapid decrease in all the measured parameters with increase in altitude, with >60% contribution to the AOD coming from the regions below 1000 m. The Angstrom wavelength exponent remained high in the well mixed region, and decreased above. The normalized AOD gradient was used to estimate aerosol mixing height, which was found to be in the altitude range 1000-1500 m, above which the particle concentrations are slowly varying as a function of altitude. The heating rate at the surface is found to be maximum but decreases sharply with increase in altitude. Analysis of the wavelength dependence of absorption aerosol optical depth (AAOD) showed that the aerosol absorption over the site is generally due to mixed aerosols. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. In this paper we report a modeling technique and analysis of wave dispersion in a cellular composite laminate with spatially modulated microstructure, which can be modeled by parameterization and homogenization in an appropriate length scale. Higher order beam theory is applied and the system of wave equations are derived. Homogenization of these equations are carried out in the scale of wavelength and frequency of the individual wave modes. Smaller scale scattering below the order of cell size are filtered out in the present approach. The longitudinal dispersion relations for different values of a modulation parameter are analyzed which indicates the existence of stop and pass band patterns. Dispersion relations for flexural-shear case are also analyzed which indicates a tendency toward forming the stop and pass bands for increasing values of a shear stiffness modulation parameter. The effect the phase angle (θ) of the incident wave indicates the existence more number of alternative stop bands and pass bands for θ = 45°.
