The compounds Pb2PtO4 and PbPt2O4 were synthesized from an intimate mixture of yellow PbO and Pt metal powders by heating under pure oxygen gas at 973 K for periods up to 600 ks with intermediate grinding and recompacting. Both compounds were found to decompose on heating in pure oxygen to PbO and Pt, apparently in conflict with the requirements for equilibrium phase relations in the ternary system Pb–Pt–O. The oxygen chemical potential corresponding to the three-phase mixtures, Pb2PtO4 + PbO + Pt and PbPt2O4 + PbO + Pt were measured as a function of temperature using solid-state electrochemical cells incorporating yttria-stabilized zirconia as the solid electrolyte and pure oxygen gas at 0.1 MPa pressure as the reference electrode. The standard Gibbs free energies of formation of the ternary oxides were derived from the measurements. Analysis of the results indicated that the equilibrium involving three condensed phases Pb2PtO4 + PbO + Pt is metastable. Under equilibrium conditions, Pb2PtO4 should have decomposed to a mixture of PbO and PbPt2O4. Measurement of the oxygen potential corresponding to this equilibrium decomposition as a function of temperature indicated that decomposition temperature in pure oxygen is 1014(±2) K. This was further confirmed by direct determination of phase relations in the ternary Pb–Pt–O by equilibrating several compositions at 1023 K for periods up to 850 ks and phase identification of quenched samples using X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). Only one ternary oxide PbPt2O4 was stable at 1023 K under equilibrium conditions. Alloys and intermetallic compounds along the Pb–Pt binary were in equilibrium with PbO.

The deformation and fracture response of a bulk metallic glass (BMG) post-annealing above the glass transition temperature is examined. The toughness of the glass-matrix composite exhibits a sharp transition beyond a critical volume fraction of crystallization to values as low as that of brittle silicate glass. Instrumented indentation tests supplemented by impact tests were used to study this ductile to brittle transition exhibited by the partially crystallized samples. Indentation on the anneal-embrittled specimens shows lateral cracks in addition to cracks along the corners. The applicability of the Poisson's ratio-toughness correlation with respect to partially crystallized samples is also investigated.

Standard Gibbs energies of formation of oxysulfides of cerium and yttrium from their respective oxedes were determined using solid oxide galvanic cells incorporating calcia-stabilized zirconia as the electrolyte in the temperature range 870–1120 K. The sulfur potential over the electrode containing the oxide and oxysulfide was fixed by a buffer mixture of Ag + Ag2S. A small amount of CaH2 was added to the buffer to generate an equilibrium ratio of H2S and H2 species in a closed system containing the buffer and the electrode. The sulfur potential is transmitted to the electrode via the gas phase. The impression creep behaviour of zinc is studied in the range 300 to 500 K and the results are compared with the data from conventional creep tests. The steady-state impression velocity is found to exhibit the same stress and temperature dependence as in conventional tensile creep with the same power law stress exponent. Also studied is the effect of indenter size on the impression velocity. The thermal activation parameters for plastic flow at high temperatures derived from a number of testing techniques agree reasonably well. Grain boundary sliding is shown to be unimportant in controlling the rate of plastic flow at high temperatures. It is observed that the Cottrell-Stokes law is obeyed during high-temperature deformation of zinc. It is concluded that a mechanism such as forest intersection involving attractive trees controls the high-temperature flow rather than a diffusion mechanism.

X-ray and IR studies on Nasicon solid solutions, Na1+xZr2SixP3−xO12, are carried out as a function of composition x. X-ray diffraction studies show that the unit cell volume increases as x increases and exhibits a maximum at x ≈ 2. On further increase in x the unit cell volume decreases. The infrared absorption peak positions and the splitting of these absorption peaks suggest a distortion of the PO4 and SiO4 tetrahedra. But the distortion is not large enough to change the local symmetry around the phosphorus or silicon ion from Td to C3v.

A pin-on-disc test configuration has been used to examine the formation of the strain-hardened projection, or wear lips, especially at the trailing edge of the pin during dry sliding of aluminium alloys against steel discs. The mechanism of formation of such wear lips is studied with the aid of optical and electron microscopes. The plastic deformation of the pin, growth and eventual removal of the wear lip as wear debris are elucidated. The size and shape of the wear lips in pins of different shapes, i.e. square, rectangular, triangular and circular cross-sections, are described.

The microstructure of a cast Al---Si alloy-graphite particle composite is examined using optical and analytical scanning electron microscopy. Specimens containing different percentages of graphite were machined by orthogonal planning with 25° and 45° rake angle tools at both 6.5 and 13.2 m min−1. The machining forces are reported and the chip-rake-face friction coefficients and shear flow stresses are calculated. It is shown that the reduction in machining forces with increasing graphite content is due mostly to a decrease in the shear flow stress rather than to lower chip-rake-face friction. Both the polished and the machined surfaces of the composite are rougher than those of the simple alloy, apparently owing to the greater porosity, the tearing out of graphite particles, or the opening of cracks at the graphite particles in the wake of the tool.

Vapour species effusing from a magnesia Knudsen cell containing Mg-Zn alloy at 923 K were condensed on a water cooled copper plate. The equilibrium composition of the vapour phase over the alloy was determined from chemical analysis of the condensate. The activity coefficients of both components in the alloy have been derived from the data using a modified Gibbs-Duhem relation. The ratio of saturation vapour pressures of pure Zn and Mg obtained from the analysis of alloy data agree well with values from the literature, providing an internal check on the accuracy of data obtained in this study. Both components of the alloy exhibit negative deviations from Raoult's law. The concentration-concentration structure factor of Bhatia and Thomton at zero wave vector, evaluated from the measurements, indicate the presence of MgZn2 type complex in the liquid state. The associated regular solution model has been used for the thermodynamic description of liquid Mg-Zn alloys.

Compounds of the Y3-x Ba3+x Cu6O14+δ system, which YBa2Cu3O7-δ (x = 1) is member, have been prepared. A relatively low temperature nitrate decomposition method gives almost single phase compounds with tetragonal structure. The phases are metastable and show superconducting transitions (zero-resistance) around 50K.

Electroslag refining is a useful remelting process by which clean steels can be produced for sophisticated applications. In this investigation, AISI 4340 steel has been electroslag refined and the improvement in its hot ductility has been assessed using hot torsion tests; electroslag refining has improved the hot ductility considerably. The temperature at which peak ductility is obtained has also increased — from 1473 K in the unrefined steel to 1573 K in ESR steel. Results indicate that it should be possible to subject the ESR ingot to much higher strains per unit operation during industrial hot working processes such as forging, which would result in a considerable saving of power. The improvement in hot ductility in ESR steel has been attributed primarily to the removal of non-metallic inclusions and the reduction in sulphur content. From the apparent activation energy estimated from the hot torsion data, the dynamic recrystallization process is identified as the mechanism controlling the rate of hot deformation.

Electrical conductivities and dielectric properties of glassy Ag4P2O7 have been investigated as a function of temperature and frequency. The variation of the properties is consistent with the structure of this glass which consists of a variety of polymeric anion species. Upon crystallization Ag4P2O7 appears to retain some of the anionic species in the solid solution as evident from the phase transition behaviour at higher temperatures.

Fine powders of TiO2 (rutile) with high degree of crystallinity are formed from aqueous titanium oxychloride solution under hydrothermal conditions at 160–230°C and 15–100 kg/cm2 for 1–2 hours. The anatase phase is produced from the same medium when sulfate ion impurity is present, with Image . Both these fine powders are converted to BaTiO3, SrTiO3 or CaTiO3 when suspended in Ba(OH)2 or Sr(OH)2 solution or in an aqueous slurry of carbonate-free CaO with Image , at 180–280°C and 12–65 kg/cm2 for 4–8 hours. The resulting fine powders contain monocrystallites of the perovskite phase with 0.1–1.5 μm particle size.

Rapid solidification of Ti-7.3wt.%Cu (near-eutectoid composition), Ti-36.2wt.%Ni and Ti-34.3wt.% Ni-5.8wt.%Si alloys has been carried out by electron beam melting and splat quenching on a water-cooled rotating copper disc. The product obtained was in the form of thin ribbons 60–100 μm thick. Transmission electron microscopy studies of Ti---Cu alloy splats showed that the microstructure consisted of a mixture of martensite and a lamellar eutectoid product. The formation of the intermetallic compound Ti2Cu involved a diffusionless ω transformation and spinodal clustering. In the case of Ti---Ni alloy the as-quenched microstructure is complex, consisting of α, transformed β and intermetallic phases. This could have arisen possibly as a result of local variation in cooling rates. Rapid solidification of Ti---Ni---Si alloy resulted in partial quenching of an amorphous phase. The amorphous phase was seen to be extremely hard (a Vickers hardness of about 800 HV).

The effect of rapid solidification on the ordering reaction in Fe---Si and Fe---Al alloys has been reported. It is shown that rapid solidification can influence the ordering reaction in alloys with higher critical ordering temperatures. For ordering reactions at lower temperatures, the effect is similar to that of solid-state quenching. Different factors influencing the ordering reactions and domain structures during rapid solidification of iron-based alloys are discussed.
