Reinforced concrete (RC) beams of span 3 m were tested under incremental cyclic load at different loading rates and simultaneously during the fracture process in the RC beams acoustic emissions (AE) were recorded. An attempt has been made to study the Kaiser effect as a measure of damage in RC beams. It was observed that RC beams made with high strength concrete under incremental cyclic loading showed an obvious Kaiser effect before the failure load. The results may be useful to study the damage in concrete structures and provide a reference for the application of Kaiser effect in engineering practice. (C) 2014 Politechnika Wroclawska. A closed-form expression for the dual of dissipation potential is derived within the framework of irreversible thermodynamics using the principles of dimensional analysis and self-similarity. Through this potential, a damage evolution law is proposed for concrete under fatigue loading using the concepts of damage mechanics in conjunction with fracture mechanics. The proposed law is used to compute damage in a volume element when a member is subjected to fatigue loading. The evolution of damage from microcracking to macrocracking of the entire member is captured through a series of volume elements failing one after the other. The number of loading cycles to failure of the member is obtained as the summation of number of cycles to failure for each individual volume element. A parametric study is conducted to determine the effect of the size of the volume element on the model's prediction of fatigue life. A global damage index is also defined, and the residual moment carrying capacity of damaged beams is evaluated. Through a deterministic sensitivity analysis, it is found that the load range and maximum aggregate size are the most influencing parameters on the fatigue life of a plain concrete beam.

In this work, a methodology to achieve ordinary-, medium-, and high-strength self-consolidating concrete (SCC) with and without mineral additions is proposed. The inclusion of Class F fly ash increases the density of SCC but retards the hydration rate, resulting in substantial strength gain only after 28 days. This delayed strength gain due to the use of fly ash has been considered in the mixture design model. The accuracy of the proposed mixture design model is validated with the present test data and mixture and strength data obtained from diverse sources reported in the literature.

An energy approach within the framework of thermodynamics is used to model the fatigue process in plain concrete. Fatigue crack growth is an irreversible process associated with an irreversible entropy gain. A closed-form expression for entropy generated during fatigue in terms of energy dissipated is derived using principles of dimensional analysis and self-similarity. An increase in compliance is considered as a measure of damage accumulated during fatigue. The entropy at final fatigue failure is shown to be independent of loading and geometry and is proposed as a material property. A relationship between energy dissipated and number of cycles of fatigue loading is obtained. (C) 2015 American Society of Civil Engineers.

Fatigue damage in concrete is characterized by the simultaneous presence of micro and macrocracks. The theory of fracture mechanics conveniently handles the propagation of macrocracks, whereas damage mechanics precisely describes the state of microcracking. This paper provides a platform to correlate fracture mechanics and damage mechanics theories through an energy equivalence within a thermodynamic framework by equating the energy dissipated according to each theory. Through this correlation, damage corresponding to a given crack length could be obtained, and alternatively a discrete crack could be transformed into an equivalent damage zone. The results are validated using available experimental data on concrete fatigue including stiffness degradation and acoustic emission. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The micro-level properties of different self compacting concrete (SCC) mixes with and without mineral admixures are studied. The study considers SCC as a two phase material consisting of matrix and aggregate. Micro indentation technique is employed to obtain the hardness of individual phases and to compute the micro-property (modulus of elasticity). Using a self consistent homogenization procedure, the micro-property is scaled-up to obtain the macro-property which is shown to agree with the experimentally obtained macro values. It is seen that there exists a smaller interfacial transition zone at different ages of curing across all the mixes due to the presence of more fines in SCC. Also, there is no significant change in the property of the SCC having no fly ash or silica fume beyond 28 days whereas a substantial change in the micro and macro properties are seen in the SCC having fly ash and silica fume.

Using coherent light interrogating a turbid object perturbed by a focused ultrasound (US) beam, we demonstrate localized measurement of dynamics in the focal region, termed the region-of-interest (ROI), from the decay of the modulation in intensity autocorrelation of light. When the ROI contains a pipe flow, the decay is shown to be sensitive to the average flow velocity from which the mean-squared displacement (MSD) of the scattering centers in the flow can be estimated. While the MSD estimated is seen to be an order of magnitude higher than that obtainable through the usual diffusing wave spectroscopy (DWS) without the US, it is seen to be more accurate as verified by the volume flow estimated from it. It is further observed that, whereas the MSD from the localized measurement grows with time as tau(alpha) with alpha approximate to 1.65, without using the US, a is seen to be much less. Moreover, with the local measurement, this super-diffusive nature of the pipe flow is seen to persist longer, i.e., over a wider range of initial tau, than with the unassisted DWS. The reason for the super-diffusivity of flow, i.e., alpha < 2, in the ROI is the presence of a fluctuating (thermodynamically nonequilibrium) component in the dynamics induced by the US forcing. Beyond this initial range, both methods measure MSDs that rise linearly with time, indicating that ballistic and near-ballistic photons hardly capture anything beyond the background Brownian motion. A steel frame is designed to measure the existing prestressing force in the concrete beams and slabs when embedded inside the concrete members. The steel frame is designed to work on the principles of a vibrating wire strain gauge and in the present study is referred to as a vibrating beam strain gauge (VBSG). The existing strain in the VBSG is evaluated using both frequency data on the stretched member and static strain corresponding to a fixed static load, measured using electrical strain gauges. The evaluated strain in the VBSG corresponds to the existing stain in the concrete surrounding the prestressing strands. The crack reopening load method is used to compute the existing prestressing force in the concrete members and is then compared with the existing prestressing force obtained from the VBSG at that section. Digital image correlation based surface deformation and change in neutral axis monitored by putting electrical strain gauges across the cross section, are used to compute the crack reopening load accurately.
