Crystal structure determination at room temperature [292 (2) K] of racemic 1,1'-binaphthalene-2,2'-diyl diethyl bis(carbonate), C26H22O6, showed that one of the terminal carbon-carbon bond lengths is very short [Csp(3)-Csp(3) = 1.327 (6) angstrom]. The reason for such a short bond length has been analysed by collecting data sets on the same crystal at 393, 150 and 90 K. The values of the corrected bond lengths clearly suggest that the shortening is mainly due to positional disorder at two sites, with minor perturbations arising as a result of thermal vibrations. The positional disorder has been resolved in the analysis of the 90 K data following the changes in the unit-cell parameters for the data sets at 150 and 90 K, which appear to be an artifact of a near centre of symmetry relationship between the two independent molecules in the space group P (1) over bar at these temperatures. Indeed, the unit cell at low temperature (150 and 90 K) is a supercell of the room-temperature unit cell.

Thermotropic liquid crystals are known to display rich phase behavior on temperature variation. Although the nematic phase is orientationally ordered but translationally disordered, a smectic phase is characterized by the appearance of a partial translational order in addition to a further increase in orientational order. In an attempt to understand the interplay between orientational and translational order in the mesophases that thermotropic liquid crystals typically exhibit upon cooling from the high-temperature isotropic phase, we investigate the potential energy landscapes of a family of model liquid crystalline systems. The configurations of the system corresponding to the local potential energy minima, known as the inherent structures, are determined from computer simulations across the mesophases. We find that the depth of the potential energy minima explored by the system along an isochor grows through the nematic phase as temperature drops in contrast to its insensitivity to temperature in the isotropic and smectic phases. The onset of the growth of the orientational order in the parent phase is found to induce a translational order, resulting in a smectic-like layer in the underlying inherent structures; the inherent structures, surprisingly, never seem to sustain orientational order alone if the parent nematic phase is sandwiched between the high-temperature isotropic phase and the low-temperature smectic phase. The Arrhenius temperature dependence of the orientational relaxation time breaks down near the isotropic-nematic transition. We find that this breakdown occurs at a temperature below which the system explores increasingly deeper potential energy minima.

The formation of crystalline diamond films from amorphous diamond-like carbon films by pulsed laser irradiation with a 300 μs non-Q-switched Nd:YAG laser has been established by a combined study of transmission electron microscopy, x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and electrical resistivity. The films have been prepared by glow discharge decomposition of a mixture of propane, n-butane, and hydrogen in a rf plasma operating at a frequency of 13.56 MHz. Prior to laser irradiation, the films have been found to be amorphous by transmission electron microscope studies. After irradiation, the electron diffraction patterns clearly point out the formation of cubic diamond structure with a lattice spacing of 3.555 Å. However, the close similarity between diamond and graphite electron diffraction patterns could sometimes be misleading regarding the formation of a diamond structure, and hence, x-ray photoelectron spectroscopic studies have been carried out to confirm the results. A chemical shift in the C 1s core level binding energies towards higher values, viz., from 286.5 to 287.8 eV after laser irradiation, and a high electrical resistivity >1013 Ω cm are consistent with the growth of diamond structure. This novel "low-temperature, low-pressure" synthesis of diamond films offers enormous potential in terms of device compatibility with other solid-state devices.

We report a method for the deposition of thin films and thick coatings of metal oxides through the liquid medium, involving the micro waveirradiation of a solution of a metal-organic complex in a suitable dielectric solvent. The process is a combination of sol-gel and dip-coating methods, wherein coatings can be obtained on nonconducting and semiconducting substrates, within a few minutes. Thin films of nanostructured ZnO (wurtzite) have been obtained on Si(100), glass and polymer substrates, the nanostructure determined by process parameters The coatings are strongly adherent and uniform over 15 mm x 15 mm, the growth rate similar to 0.25 mu m/min Coatings of nanocrystalline Fe2O3 and Ga2O3 have also been obtained The method is scalable to larger substrates, and is promising as a low temperature technique for coating dielectric substrates, including flexible polymers. This study focuses on the temperature dependent optical band gap changes in the amorphous Ge2Sb2Te5 (GST) films. The behavior of the amorphous GST thin films at low temperatures has been studied. The band gap increment of around 0.2 eV is observed at low temperature (4.2 K) compared to room temperature (300 K). The band gap changes associated with the temperature are completely reversible. The other optical parameters like Urbach energy and Tauc parameter (B-1/2) are studied for different temperatures and discussed. The observed changes in optical band gap (E-g) are fitting to Fan's one phonon approximation. Phonon energy ((h) over bar omega) corresponding to a frequency of 3.59 THz is derived from Fan's approximation, which is close to the reported value of 3.66 THz. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. We report the rapid solution combustion synthesis and characterization of Ag-substituted LaMnO3 phases at relatively low temperature using oxalyl dihydrazide, as fuel. Structural parameters were refined by the Rietveld method using powder X-ray diffraction data. While the parent LaMnO3 crystallizes in the orthorhombic structure, the Ag-substituted compounds crystallize in the rhombohedral symmetry. On increasing Ag-content, unit cell volume and Mn-O-Mn bond angle decreases. The Fourier transform infra red spectrum shows two absorption bands corresponding to Mn-O stretching vibration (v(s) mode) and Mn-O-Mn deformation vibration (v(b) mode) around 600 cm(-1) and 400 cm(-1) for the compositions x = 0.0, 0.05 and 0.10, respectively. Electrical resistivity measurements reveal that composition-controlled metal to insulator transition, with the maximum metal to insulator being 280 K for the composition La0.75Ag0.25MnO3. Increase in magnetic moment was observed with increase in Ag-content. The maximum magnetic moment of 35 emu/g was observed for the composition La0.80Ag0.20MnO3. (C) 2010 Elsevier Ltd. Langevin dynamics simulation studies have been employed to calculate the temperature dependent free energy surface and folding characteristics of a 500 monomer long linear alkane (polyethylene) chain with a realistic interaction potential. Both equilibrium and temperature quench simulation studies have been carried out. Using the shape anisotropy parameter (S) of the folded molecule as the order parameter, we find a weakly first order phase transition between the high-temperature molten globule and low-temperature rodlike crystalline states separated by a small barrier of the order of k(B)T. Near the melting temperature (580 K), we observe an intriguing intermittent fluctuation with pronounced ``1/f noise characteristics'' between these two states with large difference in shape and structure. We have also studied the possibilities of different pathways of folding to states much below the melting point. At 300 K starting from the all-trans linear configuration, the chain folds stepwise into a very regular fourfold crystallite with very high shape anisotropy. Whereas, when quenched from a high temperature (900 K) random coil regime, we identify a two step transition from the random coiled state to a molten globulelike state and, further, to a anisotropic rodlike state. The trajectory reveals an interesting coupling between the two order parameters, namely, radius of gyration (R-g) and the shape anisotropy parameter (S). The rodlike final state of the quench trajectory is characterized by lower shape anisotropy parameter and significantly larger number of gauche defects as compared to the final state obtained through equilibrium simulation starting from all-trans linear chain. The quench study shows indication of a nucleationlike pathway from the molten globule to the rodlike state involving an underlying rugged energy landscape. We discuss briefly some of the basic issues involved in the field of metal-insulator transition. We point out why this area is a profitable area of research. We also suggest certain definite action plan for this area in particular and the area of low temperature solid state physics in general.

An energy landscape view of phase separation and nonideality in binary mixtures is developed by exploring their potential energy landscape (PEL) as functions of temperature and composition. We employ molecular dynamics simulations to study a model that promotes structure breaking in the solute-solvent parent binary liquid, at low temperatures. The PEL of the system captures the potential energy distribution of the inherent structures (IS) of the system and is obtained by removing the kinetic energy (including that of intermolecular vibrations). The broader distribution of the inherent structure energy for structure breaking liquid than that of the structure making liquid demonstrates the larger role of entropy in stabilizing the parent liquid of the structure breaking type of binary mixtures. At high temperature, although the parent structure of the structure breaking binary mixture is homogenous, the corresponding inherent structure is found to be always phase separated, with a density pattern that exhibits marked correlation with the energy of its inherent structure. Over a broad range of intermediate inherent structure energy, bicontinuous phase separation prevails with interpenetrating stripes as signatures of spinodal decomposition. At low inherent structure energy, the structure is largely phase separated with one interface where as at high inherent structure energy we find nucleation type growth. Interestingly, at low temperature, the average inherent structure energy (< EIS >) exhibits a drop with temperature which signals the onset of crystallization in one of the phases while the other remains in the liquid state. The nonideal composition dependence of viscosity is anticorrelated with average inherent structure energy.

Donor-doped n-BaTiO3 polycrystalline ceramics show a strong negative temperature coefficient of resistivity below the orthorhombic-rhombohedral phase transition point, from 10(2-3) Omega cm af 190 K to 10(10-13) Omega cm at less than or similar to 50 K, with thermal coefficient of resistance alpha = 20-23% K-1. Stable thermal sensors for low-temperature applications are realized therefrom. The negative temperature coefficient of resistivity region can be modified by substituting isovalent ions in the lattice. Highly nonlinear current-voltage (I-V) curves are observed at low temperatures, with a voltage maximum followed by the negative differential resistance. The I-V curves are sensitive to dissipation so that cryogenic sensors can be fabricated for liquid level control, flow rate monitoring, radiation detection or in-rush voltage limitation.

The nature of the phase transitions of Bi2MoO6 has been investigated by the combined use of X-ray diffraction and Xray absorption spectroscopy. The distorted MoO6 octahedra in the low-temperature form are shown to undergo further distortion in the intermediate-temperature form before transforming to MoO4 tetrahedra in the high-temperature phase. Stabilization of nanocrystalline grain sizes by second phase particles can facilitate superplasticity at high strain rates and/or low temperatures. A metastable single phase nano-Ni-P alloy prepared by electrodeposition, with a grain size of similar to 6 nm, transforms to a nanoduplex structure at T> 673 K, with similar to 4 vol.% Ni3P particles at triple junctions and within Ni grains. The nanoduplex microstructure is reasonably stable up to 777 K, and the growth of Ni grains occurs in a coupled manner with the growth of Ni3P particles such that the ratio of the two mean sizes (Z) is essentially constant. High temperature tests for a grain size of 290 nm reveal superplastic behavior with an optimum elongation to failure of 810% at a strain rate of 7 x 10(-4) s(-1) and a relatively low temperature of 777 K. Superplastic deformation enhances both grain growth and the ratio Z, implying that grain boundary sliding (GBS) significantly influences the microstructural dynamics. Analysis of the deformation processes suggests that superplasticity is associated with GBS controlled by the overcoming of intragranular particles by dislocations, so that deformation is independent of the grain size. The nano-Ni-P alloy exhibits lower ductility than nano-Ni due to concurrent cavitation caused by higher stresses. (C) 2011 Acta Materialia Inc. Published by Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Dimethylzine (DMZn) was used as a p-type dopant in GaAs grown by low pressure metalorganic vapor phase epitaxy using trimethylgallium and arsine (AsH3) as source materials, The hole carrier concentrations and zinc (Zn) incorporation efficiency are studied by using the Hall effect, electrochemical capacitance voltage profiler and photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy, The influence of growth parameters such as DMZn mole fraction, growth temperature, and AsH, mole fraction on the Zn incorporation have been studied. The hole concentration increases with increasing DMZn and AsH3 mole fraction and decreases with increasing growth temperature. This can be explained by vacancy control model. The PL experiments were carried out as a function of hole concentration (10(17)-1.5 x 10(20) cm(-3)). The main peak shifted to lower energy and the full width at half maximum (FWHM) increases with increasing hole concentrations. We have obtained an empirical relation for FWHM of PL, Delta E(p)(eV) = 1.15 x 10(-8)p(1/3). We also obtained an empirical relation for the band gap shrinkage, Delta E-g in Zn doped GaAs as a function of hole concentration. The value of Delta E-g(eV) = -2.75 x 10(-8)p(1/3), indicates a significant band gap shrinkage at high doping levels, These relations are considered to provide a useful tool to determine the hole concentration in Zn doped GaAs by low temperature PL measurement. The hole concentration increases with increasing AsH3 mole fraction and the main peak is shifted to a lower energy side. This can be explained also by the vacancy control model. As the hole concentration is increased above 3.8 x 10(18) cm(-3), a shoulder peak separated from the main peak was observed in the PL spectra and disappears at higher concentrations. Silane (SiH4) was used as an n-type dopant in GaAs grown by low pressure metalorganic vapor phase epitaxy using trimethylgallium (TMGa) and arsine (AsH3) as source materials. The electron carrier concentrations and silicon (Si) incorporation efficiency are studied by using Hall effect, electrochemical capacitance voltage profiler and low temperature photoluminescence (LTPL) spectroscopy. The influence of growth parameters, such as SiH4 mole fraction, growth temperature, TMGa and AsH3 mole fractions on the Si incorporation efficiency have been studied. The electron concentration increases with increasing SIH4 mole fraction, growth temperature, and decreases with increasing TMGa and AsH3 mole fractions. The decrease in electron concentration with increasing TMGa can be explained by vacancy control model. The PL experiments were carried out as a function of electron concentration (10(17) - 1.5 x 10(18) cm(-3)). The PL main peak shifts to higher energy and the full width at half maximum (FWHM) increases with increasing electron concentrations. We have obtained an empirical relation for FWHM of PL, Delta E(n) (eV) = 1.4 x 10(-8) n(1/3). We also obtained an empirical relation for the band gap shrinkage, Delta E-g in Si-doped GaAs as a function of electron concentration. The value of Delta E-g (eV) = -2.75 x 10(-8) n(1/3), indicates a significant band gap shrinkage at high doping levels. These relations are considered to provide a useful tool to determine the electron concentration in Si-doped GaAs by low temperature PL measurement. The electron concentration decreases with increasing TMGa and AsH3 mole fractions and the main peak shifts to the lower energy side. The peak shifts towards the lower energy side with increasing TMGa variation can also be explained by vacancy control model. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science S.A. All rights reserved.
