We report low-dimensional fabrication of technologically important giant dielectric material CaCu3Ti4O12 (CCTO) using soft electron beam lithographic technique. Sol-gel precursor solution of CCTO was prepared using inorganic metal nitrates and Ti-isopropoxide. Employing the prepared precursor solution and e-beam lithographically fabricated resist mask CCTO dots with similar to 200 nm characteristic dimension were fabricated on platinized Si (111) substrate. Phase formation, chemical purity and crystalline nature of fabricated low dimensional structures were investigated with X-ray diffraction (XRD), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) and selected area electron diffraction (SAED), respectively. Morphological investigations were carried out with the help of scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). This kind of solution based fabrication of patterned low-dimensional high dielectric architectures might get potential significance for cost-effective technological applications. A generalized top-spin analysis proposed some time ago in the context of the standard model and subsequently studied in varying contexts is now applied primarily to the case of e(+)e(-) -> t (tww) over bar with transversely polarized beams. This extends our recent work with new physics couplings of scalar (S) and tensor (T) types. We carry out a comprehensive analysis assuming only the electron beam to be transversely polarized, which is sufficient to probe these interactions, and also eliminates any azimuthal angular dependence due to the standard model or new physics of the vector (V) and axial-vector (A) type interactions. We then consider new physics of the general four-Fermi type of V and A type with both beams transversely polarized and discuss implications with longitudinal polarization as well. The generalized spin bases are all investigated in the presence of either longitudinal or transverse beam polarization to look for appreciable deviation from the SM prediction in case of the new physics. 90% confidence level limits are obtained on the interactions for the generalized spin bases with realistic integrated luminosity. In order to achieve this we present a general discussion based on helicity amplitudes and derive a general transformation matrix that enables us to treat the spin basis. We find that beamline basis combined with transverse polarization provides an excellent window of opportunity both for S, T and V, A new physics, followed by the off-diagonal basis. The helicity basis is shown to be the best in case of longitudinal polarization to look for new physics effects due to V and A. DOI: 10.1103/PhysRevD.86.114019

Titanium dioxide (TiO2) thin films were deposited on fused quartz substrates by electron beam evaporation method at room temperature. The films were annealed at different temperatures in ambient air. The surface morphology/roughness at different annealing temperatures were analyzed by atomic force microscopy (AFM). The crystallinity of the film has improved with the increase of annealing temperature. The effect of annealing temperature on optical, photoluminescence and Raman spectra of TiO2 films were investigated. The refractive index of TiO2 films were studied by envelope method and reflectance spectra and it is observed that the refractive index of the films was high. The photoluminescence intensity corresponding to green emission was enhanced with increase of annealing temperature. The peaks in Raman spectra depicts that the TiO2 film is of anatase phase after annealing at 300 degrees C and higher. The films show high refractive index, good optical quality and photoluminescence characteristics suggest that possible usage in opto-electronic and optical coating applications. The top polarization at the International Linear Collider (ILC) with transverse beam polarization is utilized in the process to probe interactions of the scalar and tensor type beyond the Standard Model and to disentangle their individual contributions. Confidence level limits of 90% are presented on the interactions with realistic integrated luminosity and are found to improve by an order of magnitude compared to the case when the spin of the top quark is not measured. Sensitivities of the order of a few times 10 (-aEuro parts per thousand 3) TeV (-aEuro parts per thousand 2) for real and imaginary parts of both scalar and tensor couplings at and 800 GeV with an integrated luminosity of 500 fb (-aEuro parts per thousand 1) and completely polarized beams are shown to be possible.

The curvature related locking phenomena in the out-of-plane deformation of Timoshenko and Euler-Bernoulli curved beam elements are demonstrated and a novel approach is proposed to circumvent them. Both flexure and Torsion locking phenomena are noticed in Timoshenko beam and torsion locking phenomenon alone in Euler-Bernoulli beam. Two locking-free curved beam finite element models are developed using coupled polynomial displacement field interpolations to eliminate these locking effects. The coupled polynomial interpolation fields are derived independently for Timoshenko and Euler-Bernoulli beam elements using the governing equations. The presented of penalty terms in the couple displacement fields incorporates the flexure-torsion coupling and flexure-shear coupling effects in an approximate manner and produce no spurious constraints in the extreme geometric limits of flexure, torsion and shear stiffness. the proposed couple polynomial finite element models, as special cases, reduce to the conventional Timoshenko beam element and Euler-Bernoulli beam element, respectively. These models are shown to perform consistently over a wide range of flexure-to-shear (EI/GA) and flexure-to-torsion (EI/GJ) stiffness ratios and are inherently devoid of flexure, torsion and shear locking phenomena. The efficacy, accuracy and reliability of the proposed models to straight and curved beam applications are demonstrated through numerical examples. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The q-Gaussian distribution results from maximizing certain generalizations of Shannon entropy under some constraints. The importance of q-Gaussian distributions stems from the fact that they exhibit power-law behavior, and also generalize Gaussian distributions. In this paper, we propose a Smoothed Functional (SF) scheme for gradient estimation using q-Gaussian distribution, and also propose an algorithm for optimization based on the above scheme. Convergence results of the algorithm are presented. Performance of the proposed algorithm is shown by simulation results on a queuing model.

A wave-based method is developed to quantify the defect due to porosity and also to locate the porous regions, in a composite beam-type structure. Wave propagation problem for a porous laminated composite beam is modeled using spectral finite element method (SFEM), based on the modified rule of mixture approach, which is used to include the effect of porosity on the stiffness and density of the composite beam structure. The material properties are obtained from the modified rule of mixture model, which are used in a conventional SFEM to develop a new model for solving wave propagation problems in porous laminated composite beam. The influence of the porosity content on the group speed and also the effect of variation in theses parameters on the time responses are studied first, in the forward problem. The change in the time responses with the change in the porosity of the structure is used as a parameter to find the porosity content in a composite beam. The actual measured response from a structure and the numerically obtained time responses are used for the estimation of porosity, by solving a nonlinear optimization problem. The effect of the length of the porous region (in the propagation direction), on the time responses, is studied. The damage force indicator technique is used to locate the porous region in a beam and also to find its length, using the measured wave propagation responses. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. Network life time maximization is becoming an important design goal in wireless sensor networks. Energy harvesting has recently become a preferred choice for achieving this goal as it provides near perpetual operation. We study such a sensor node with an energy harvesting source and compare various architectures by which the harvested energy is used. We find its Shannon capacity when it is transmitting its observations over a fading AWGN channel with perfect/no channel state information provided at the transmitter. We obtain an achievable rate when there are inefficiencies in energy storage and the capacity when energy is spent in activities other than transmission.

Constellation Constrained (CC) capacity regions of two-user Gaussian Multiple Access Channels (GMAC) have been recently reported, wherein introducing appropriate rotation between the constellations of the two users is shown to maximally enlarge the CC capacity region. Such a Non-Orthogonal Multiple Access (NO-MA) method of enlarging the CC capacity region is referred to as Constellation Rotation (CR) scheme. In this paper, we propose a novel NO-MA technique called Constellation Power Allocation (CPA) scheme to enlarge the CC capacity region of two-user GMAC. We show that the CPA scheme offers CC sum capacities equal (at low SNR values) or close (at high SNR values) to those offered by the CR scheme with reduced ML decoding complexity for some QAM constellations. For the CR scheme, code pairs approaching the CC sum capacity are known only for the class of PSK and PAM constellations but not for QAM constellations. In this paper, we design code pairs with the CPA scheme to approach the CC sum capacity for 16-QAM constellations. Further, the CPA scheme used for two-user GMAC with random phase offsets is shown to provide larger CC sum capacities at high SNR values compared to the CR scheme.

Adaptive Gaussian Mixture Models (GMM) have been one of the most popular and successful approaches to perform foreground segmentation on multimodal background scenes. However, the good accuracy of the GMM algorithm comes at a high computational cost. An improved GMM technique was proposed by Zivkovic to reduce computational cost by minimizing the number of modes adaptively. In this paper, we propose a modification to his adaptive GMM algorithm that further reduces execution time by replacing expensive floating point computations with low cost integer operations. To maintain accuracy, we derive a heuristic that computes periodic floating point updates for the GMM weight parameter using the value of an integer counter. Experiments show speedups in the range of 1.33 - 1.44 on standard video datasets where a large fraction of pixels are multimodal.

This work derives inner and outer bounds on the generalized degrees of freedom (GDOF) of the K-user symmetric MIMO Gaussian interference channel. For the inner bound, an achievable GDOF is derived by employing a combination of treating interference as noise, zero-forcing at the receivers, interference alignment (IA), and extending the Han-Kobayashi (HK) scheme to K users, depending on the number of antennas and the INR/SNR level. An outer bound on the GDOF is derived, using a combination of the notion of cooperation and providing side information to the receivers. Several interesting conclusions are drawn from the bounds. For example, in terms of the achievable GDOF in the weak interference regime, when the number of transmit antennas (M) is equal to the number of receive antennas (N), treating interference as noise performs the same as the HK scheme and is GDOF optimal. For K >; N/M+1, a combination of the HK and IA schemes performs the best among the schemes considered. However, for N/M <; K ≤ N/M+1, the HK scheme is found to be GDOF optimal.

In this paper, we investigate the achievable rate region of Gaussian multiple access channels (MAC) with finite input alphabet and quantized output. With finite input alphabet and an unquantized receiver, the two-user Gaussian MAC rate region was studied. In most high throughput communication systems based on digital signal processing, the analog received signal is quantized using a low precision quantizer. In this paper, we first derive the expressions for the achievable rate region of a two-user Gaussian MAC with finite input alphabet and quantized output. We show that, with finite input alphabet, the achievable rate region with the commonly used uniform receiver quantizer has a significant loss in the rate region compared. It is observed that this degradation is due to the fact that the received analog signal is densely distributed around the origin, and is therefore not efficiently quantized with a uniform quantizer which has equally spaced quantization intervals. It is also observed that the density of the received analog signal around the origin increases with increasing number of users. Hence, the loss in the achievable rate region due to uniform receiver quantization is expected to increase with increasing number of users. We, therefore, propose a novel non-uniform quantizer with finely spaced quantization intervals near the origin. For a two-user Gaussian MAC with a given finite input alphabet and low precision receiver quantization, we show that the proposed non-uniform quantizer has a significantly larger rate region compared to what is achieved with a uniform quantizer.

Structural health monitoring of existing infrastructure is currently an active field of research, where elaborate experimental programs and advanced analytical methods are used in identifying the current state of health of critical structures. Change of static deflection as the indicator of damage is the simplest tool in a structural health monitoring scenario of bridges that is least exploited in damage identification strategies. In this paper, some simple and elegant equations based on loss of symmetry due to damage are derived and presented for identification of damage in a bridge girder modeled as a simply supported beam using changes in static deflections and dynamic parameters. A single contiguous and distributed damage, typical of reinforced or prestressed concrete structures, is assumed for the structure. The methodology is extended for a base-line-free as well as base-line-inclusive measurement. Measurement strategy involves application of loads only at two symmetric points one at a time and deflection measurements at those symmetric points as well as at the midspan of the beam. A laboratory-based experiment is used to validate the approach. Copyright (c) 2012 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

In this paper, we seek to find non-rotating beams with continuous mass and flexural stiffness distributions, that are isospectral to a given uniform rotating beam. The Barcilon-Gottlieb transformation is used to convert the fourth order governing equation of a non-rotating beam, to a canonical fourth order eigenvalue problem. If the coefficients in this canonical equation match with the coefficients of the uniform rotating beam equation, then the non-rotating beam is isospectral to the given rotating beam. The conditions on matching the coefficients leads to a pair of coupled differential equations. We solve these coupled differential equations for a particular case, and thereby obtain a class of non-rotating beams that are isospectral to a uniform rotating beam. However, to obtain isospectral beams, the transformation must leave the boundary conditions invariant. We show that the clamped end boundary condition is always invariant, and for the free end boundary condition to be invariant, we impose certain conditions on the beam characteristics. We also verify numerically that the frequencies of the non-rotating beam obtained using the finite element method (FEM) are the exact frequencies of the uniform rotating beam. Finally, the example of beams having a rectangular cross-section is presented to show the application of our analysis. Since experimental determination of rotating beam frequencies is a difficult task, experiments can be easily conducted on these rectangular non-rotating beams, to calculate the frequencies of the rotating beam.
