Traditional image reconstruction methods in rapid dynamic diffuse optical tomography employ l(2)-norm-based regularization, which is known to remove the high-frequency components in the reconstructed images and make them appear smooth. The contrast recovery in these type of methods is typically dependent on the iterative nature of method employed, where the nonlinear iterative technique is known to perform better in comparison to linear techniques (noniterative) with a caveat that nonlinear techniques are computationally complex. Assuming that there is a linear dependency of solution between successive frames resulted in a linear inverse problem. This new framework with the combination of l(1)-norm based regularization can provide better robustness to noise and provide better contrast recovery compared to conventional l(2)-based techniques. Moreover, it is shown that the proposed l(1)-based technique is computationally efficient compared to its counterpart (l(2)-based one). The proposed framework requires a reasonably close estimate of the actual solution for the initial frame, and any suboptimal estimate leads to erroneous reconstruction results for the subsequent frames.

In this paper, size dependent linear free flexural vibration behavior of functionally graded (FG) nanoplates are investigated using the iso-geometric based finite element method. The field variables are approximated by non-uniform rational B-splines. The nonlocal constitutive relation is based on Eringen's differential form of nonlocal elasticity theory. The material properties are assumed to vary only in the thickness direction and the effective properties for the FG plate are computed using Mori-Tanaka homogenization scheme. The accuracy of the present formulation is demonstrated considering the problems for which solutions are available. A detailed numerical study is carried out to examine the effect of material gradient index, the characteristic internal length, the plate thickness, the plate aspect ratio and the boundary conditions on the global response of the FG nanoplate. From the detailed numerical study it is seen that the fundamental frequency decreases with increasing gradient index and characteristic internal length. (c) 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

This paper attempts a quantitative understanding of the effect of length scale on two phase eutectic structure. We first develop a model that considers both the elastic and plastic properties of the interface. Using Al-Al2Cu lamellar eutectic as model system, the parameters of the model were experimentally determined using indentation technique. The model is further validated using the results of bulk compression testing of the eutectics having different length scales. The fabrication of functional materials via grain growth engineering implicitly relies on altering the mobilities of grain boundaries (GBs) by applying external fields. Although computer simulations have alluded to kinetic roughening as a potential mechanism for modifying GB mobilities, its implications for grain growth have remained largely unexplored owing to difficulties in bridging the widely separated length and time scales. Here, by imaging GB particle dynamics as well as grain network evolution under shear, we present direct evidence for kinetic roughening of GBs and unravel its connection to grain growth in driven colloidal polycrystals. The capillary fluctuation method allows us to quantitatively extract shear-dependent effective mobilities. Remarkably, our experiments reveal that for sufficiently large strains, GBs with normals parallel to shear undergo preferential kinetic roughening, resulting in anisotropic enhancement of effective mobilities and hence directional grain growth. Single-particle level analysis shows that the mobility anisotropy emerges from strain-induced directional enhancement of activated particle hops normal to the GB plane. We expect our results to influence materials fabrication strategies for atomic and block copolymeric polycrystals as well.

Organic plastic crystalline soft matter ion conductors are interesting alternatives to liquid electrolytes in electrochemical storage devices such as Lithium-ion batteries. The solvent dynamics plays a major role in determining the ion transport in plastic crystalline ion conductors. We present here an analysis of the frequency-dependent ionic conductivity of succinonitrile-based plastic crystalline ion conductors at varying salt composition (0.005 to 1 M) and temperature (-20 to 60 degrees C) using time-temperature superposition principle (TTSP). The main motivation of the work has been to establish comprehensive insight into the ion transport mechanism from a single method viz, impedance spectroscopy rather than employing cluster of different characterization methods probing various length and time scales. The TTSP remarkably aids in explicit identification of the extent of the roles of solvent dynamics and ion-ion interactions on the effective conductivity of the orientationally disordered plastic crystalline ion conductors.

The Notch signalling pathway is implicated in a wide variety of cellular processes throughout metazoan development. Although the downstream mechanism of Notch signalling has been extensively studied, the details of its ligand-mediated receptor activation are not clearly understood. Although the role of Notch ELRs EGF (epidermal growth factor)-like-repeats] 11-12 in ligand binding is known, recent studies have suggested interactions within different ELRs of the Notch receptor whose significance remains to be understood. Here, we report critical inter-domain interactions between human Notch1 ELRs 21-30 and the ELRs 11-15 that are modulated by calcium. Surface plasmon resonance analysis revealed that the interaction between ELRs 21-30 and ELRs 11-15 is similar to 10-fold stronger than that between ELRs 11-15 and the ligands. Although there was no interaction between Notch 1 ELRs 21-30 and the ligands in vitro, addition of pre-clustered Jagged1Fc resulted in the dissociation of the preformed complex between ELRs 21-30 and 11-15, suggesting that inter-domain interactions compete for ligand binding. Furthermore, the antibodies against ELRs 21-30 inhibited ligand binding to the full-length Notch1 and subsequent receptor activation, with the antibodies against ELRs 25-26 being the most effective. These results suggest that the ELRs 25-26 represent a cryptic ligand-binding site which becomes exposed only upon the presence of the ligand. Thus, using specific antibodies against various domains of the Notch1 receptor, we demonstrate that, although ELRs 11-12 are the principal ligand-binding site, the ELRs 25-26 serve as a secondary binding site and play an important role in receptor activation.

Dynamic Voltage and Frequency Scaling (DVFS) is a very effective tool for designing trade-offs between energy and performance. In this paper, we use a formal Petri net based program performance model that directly captures both the application and system properties, to find energy efficient DVFS settings for CMP systems, that satisfy a given performance constraint, for SPMD multithreaded programs. Experimental evaluation shows that we achieve significant energy savings, while meeting the performance constraints.

Using the spectral multiplicities of the standard torus, we endow the Laplace eigenspaces with Gaussian probability measures. This induces a notion of random Gaussian Laplace eigenfunctions on the torus (''arithmetic random waves''). We study the distribution of the nodal length of random eigenfunctions for large eigenvalues, and our primary result is that the asymptotics for the variance is nonuniversal. Our result is intimately related to the arithmetic of lattice points lying on a circle with radius corresponding to the energy.

We study the tradeoff between the average error probability and the average queueing delay of messages which randomly arrive to the transmitter of a point-to-point discrete memoryless channel that uses variable rate fixed codeword length random coding. Bounds to the exponential decay rate of the average error probability with average queueing delay in the regime of large average delay are obtained. Upper and lower bounds to the optimal average delay for a given average error probability constraint are presented. We then formulate a constrained Markov decision problem for characterizing the rate of transmission as a function of queue size given an average error probability constraint. Using a Lagrange multiplier the constrained Markov decision problem is then converted to a problem of minimizing the average cost for a Markov decision problem. A simple heuristic policy is proposed which approximately achieves the optimal average cost.

During the motion of one dimensional flexible objects such as ropes, chains, etc., the assumption of constant length is realistic. Moreover, their motion appears to be naturally minimizing some abstract distance measure, wherein the disturbance at one end gradually dies down along the curve defining the object. This paper presents purely kinematic strategies for deriving length-preserving transformations of flexible objects that minimize appropriate ‘motion’. The strategies involve sequential and overall optimization of the motion derived using variational calculus. Numerical simulations are performed for the motion of a planar curve and results show stable converging behavior for single-step infinitesimal and finite perturbations 1 as well as multi-step perturbations. Additionally, our generalized approach provides different intuitive motions for various problem-specific measures of motion, one of which is shown to converge to the conventional tractrix-based solution. Simulation results for arbitrary shapes and excitations are also included.

Some bulk metallic glasses (BMGs) exhibit high crack initiation toughness due to shear band mediated plastic flow at the crack tip and yet do not display additional resistance to crack growth due to the lack of a microstructure. Thus, at crack initiation, the fracture behavior of BMGs transits from that of ductile alloys to that of brittle ceramics. In this paper, we attempt to understand the physics behind the characteristic length from the notch root at which this transition occurs, through testing of four-point bend specimens made of a nominally ductile Zr-based BMG in three different structural states. In the as-cast state, both symmetric (mode I) and asymmetric (mixed mode) bend specimens are tested. The process of shear band mediated plastic flow followed by crack initiation at the notch root was monitored through in situ imaging. Results show that stable crack growth occurs inside a dominant shear band through a distance of, similar to 60 mu m, irrespective of the structural state and mode mixity, before attaining criticality. Detailed finite element simulations show that this length corresponds to the distance from the notch root over which a positive hydrostatic stress gradient prevails. The mean ridge heights on fractured surfaces are found to correlate with the toughness of the BMG. The Argon and Salama model, which is based on the meniscus instability phenomenon at the notch root, is modified to explain the experimentally observed physics of fracture in ductile BMGs. In this paper, we address a physics based closed form model for the energy band gap (E-g) and the transport electron effective mass in relaxed and strained 100] and 110] oriented rectangular Silicon Nanowire (SiNW). Our proposed analytical model along 100] and 110] directions are based on the k.p formalism of the conduction band energy dispersion relation through an appropriate rotation of the Hamiltonian of the electrons in the bulk crystal along 001] direction followed by the inclusion of a 4 x 4 Luttinger Hamiltonian for the description of the valance band structure. Using this, we demonstrate the variation in Eg and the transport electron effective mass as function of the cross-sectional dimensions in a relaxed 100] and 110] oriented SiNW. The behaviour of these two parameters in 100] oriented SiNW has further been studied with the inclusion of a uniaxial strain along the transport direction and a biaxial strain, which is assumed to be decomposed from a hydrostatic deformation along 001] with the former one. In addition, the energy band gap and the effective mass of a strained 110] oriented SiNW has also been formulated. Using this, we compare our analytical model with that of the extracted data using the nearest neighbour empirical tight binding sp(3)d(5)s* method based simulations and has been found to agree well over a wide range of device dimensions and applied strain. Mn doping in ZnS nanoplatelets has been shown to induce a structural transition from the wurtzite to the zinc blende phase. We trace the origin of this transition to quantum confinement effects, which shift the valence band maximum of the wurtzite and zinc blende polyrnorphs of ZnS at different rates as a function of the nanocrystal size, arising from different effective hole masses in the two structures. This modifies the covalency associated with Mn incorporation and is reflected in the size-dependent binding energy difference for the two structures.

In document community support vector machines and naïve bayes classifier are known for their simplistic yet excellent performance. Normally the feature subsets used by these two approaches complement each other, however a little has been done to combine them. The essence of this paper is a linear classifier, very similar to these two. We propose a novel way of combining these two approaches, which synthesizes best of them into a hybrid model. We evaluate the proposed approach using 20ng dataset, and compare it with its counterparts. The efficacy of our results strongly corroborate the effectiveness of our approach.

Success in the advancement of thermoacoustic field led the researchers to develop the thermoacoustic engines which found its applications in various fields such as refrigeration, gas mixture separation, natural gas liquefaction, and cryogenics. The objective of this study is to design and fabricate the twin thermoacoustic heat engine (TAHE) producing the acoustic waves with high resonance frequencies which is used to drive a thermoacoustic refrigerator efficiently by the influence of geometrical parameters and working fluids. Twin TAHE has gained significant attention due to the production of high intensity acoustic waves than single TAHE. In order to drive an efficient thermoacoustic refrigerator, a twin thermoacoustic heat engine is built up and its performance are analysed by varying the resonator length and working fluid. The performance is measured in terms of onset temperature difference, resonance frequency and pressure amplitude of the oscillations generated from twin TAHE. The simulation is performed using free software DeltaEC, from LANL, USA. The simulated DeltaEC results are compared with experimental results and the deviations are found within +10%.
