A quantitative structural investigation was carried out on (1-y)PbZrxTi1-xO3-yPbZn(1/3)Nb(2/3)O(3) where y=0.1 and 0.2 ((1-y)PZT-yPZN). High resolution XRD data have been used for quantitative phase analysis. The nominal compositions were prepared by a two-step low temperature calcining solid-state method. The sintered samples show an average grain size of 1-2 mu m. It is demonstrated that the increase in the concentration of PZN leads to the shift of the morphotropic phase boundary (MPB) of PZT towards the PbZrO3 end member. In the present work, an effort has been made to quantitatively determine the MPB phase contents and to regain the coexistence of tetragonal and monoclinic phases by varying the value of x(i.e. Zr/Ti ratio). The width of the MPB becomes considerably larger for y=0.10 and 0.20 as compared to pure PZT. This is attributed to the considerably lower grain size of our samples resulting from the adopted preparation method. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Experiments were conducted in water and wind tunnels on spheres in the Reynolds number range 6 x 10(3) to 6.5 x 10(5) to study the effect of natural ventilation on the boundary layer separation and near-wake Vortex shedding characteristics. In the subcritical range of Re (<2 x 10(5)), ventilation caused a marginal downstream shift in the location of laminar boundary layer separation; there was only a small change in the vortex shedding frequency. In the supercritical range (Re > 4 x 10(5)), ventilation caused a downstream shift in the mean locations of boundary layer separation and reattachment; these lines showed significant axisymmetry in the presence of venting. No distinct vortex shedding frequency was found. Instead, a dramatic reduction occurred in the wake unsteadiness at all frequencies. The reduction of wake unsteadiness is consistent with the reduction in total drag already reported. Based on the present results and those reported earlier, the effects of natural ventilation on the flow past a sphere can be categorized in two broad regimes, viz., weak and strong interaction regimes. In the weak interaction regime (subcritical Re), the broad features of the basic sphere are largely unaltered despite the large addition of mass in the near wake. Strong interaction is promoted by the closer proximity of the inner and outer shear layers at supercritical Re. This results in a modified and steady near-wake flow, characterized by reduced unsteadiness and small drag.

Owing to the lack of atmospheric vertical profile data with sufficient accuracy and vertical resolution, the response of the deep atmosphere to passage of monsoon systems over the Bay of Bengal. had not been satisfactorily elucidated. Under the Indian Climate Research Programme, a special observational programme called 'Bay of Bengal Monsoon Experiment' (BOBMEX), was conducted during July-August 1999. The present study is based on the high-resolution radiosondes launched during BOBMEX in the north Bay. Clear changes in the vertical thermal structure of the atmosphere between active and weak phases of convection have been observed. The atmosphere cooled below 6 km height and became warmer between 6 and 13 km height. The warmest layer was located between 8 and 10 km height, and the coldest layer was found just below 5 km height. The largest fluctuations in the humidity field occurred in the mid-troposphere. The observed changes between active and weak phases of convection are compared with the results from an atmospheric general circulation model, which is similar to that used at the National Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecasting, New Delhi. The model is not able to capture realistically some important features of the temperature and humidity profiles in the lower troposphere and in the boundary layer during the active and weak spells.

PbZr1-xTixO3 ceramics synthesised by low temperature calcination followed by sintering at 1280 degrees C show a Morphotropic Phase Boundary (MPB) for compositions of x=0.44-0.51. The morphotropic phase boundary is wider for samples with smaller grain sizes due to the synthesis route. A Rietveld analysis is performed on a composition of x=0.5 composition to quantify the phase fractions of the tetragonal and monoclinic phases present in the PZT system. Temperature dependent X-ray diffraction and dielectric studies of PbZr0.5Ti0.5O3 composition demonstrated a phase transformation from monoclinic to tetragonal at 270 degrees C followed by a ferroelectric tetragonal to a paraelectric cubic transition at 370 degrees C. Thus, the poling of these ceramics should be performed below 270 degrees C to benefit from the presence of a monoclinic phase. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd and Techna Group S.r.l. All rights reserved.
Exact internal controllability for a hyperbolic problem in a domain with highly oscillating boundary

In this paper, by using the Hilbert Uniqueness Method (HUM), we study the exact controllability problem described by the wave equation in a three-dimensional horizontal domain bounded at the bottom by a smooth wall and at the top by a rough wall. The latter is assumed to consist in a plane wall covered with periodically distributed asperities whose size depends on a small parameter epsilon > 0, and with a fixed height. Our aim is to obtain the exact controllability for the homogenized equation. In the process, we study the asymptotic analysis of wave equation in two setups, namely solution by standard weak formulation and solution by transposition method.

Visual search in real life involves complex displays with a target among multiple types of distracters, but in the laboratory, it is often tested using simple displays with identical distracters. Can complex search be understood in terms of simple searches? This link may not be straightforward if complex search has emergent properties. One such property is linear separability, whereby search is hard when a target cannot be separated from its distracters using a single linear boundary. However, evidence in favor of linear separability is based on testing stimulus configurations in an external parametric space that need not be related to their true perceptual representation. We therefore set out to assess whether linear separability influences complex search at all. Our null hypothesis was that complex search performance depends only on classical factors such as target-distracter similarity and distracter homogeneity, which we measured using simple searches. Across three experiments involving a variety of artificial and natural objects, differences between linearly separable and nonseparable searches were explained using target-distracter similarity and distracter heterogeneity. Further, simple searches accurately predicted complex search regardless of linear separability (r = 0.91). Our results show that complex search is explained by simple search, refuting the widely held belief that linear separability influences visual search.

Scaling of the streamwise velocity spectrum phi(11)(k(1)) in the so-called sink-flow turbulent boundary layer is investigated in this work. The present experiments show strong evidence for the k(1)(-1) scaling i.e. phi(11)(k(1)) = Lambda(1)U(tau)(2)k(1)(-1), where k(1)(-1) is the streamwise wavenumber and U-tau is the friction velocity. Interestingly, this k(1)(-1) scaling is observed much farther from the wall and at much lower flow Reynolds number (both differing by almost an order of magnitude) than what the expectations from experiments on a zero-pressure-gradient turbulent boundary layer flow would suggest. Furthermore, the coefficient A(1) in the present sink-flow data is seen to be non-universal, i.e. A(1) varies with height from the wall; the scaling exponent -1 remains universal. Logarithmic variation of the so-called longitudinal structure function, which is the physical-space counterpart of spectral k(1)(-1) scaling, is also seen to be non-universal, consistent with the non-universality of A(1). These observations are to be contrasted with the universal value of A(1) (along with the universal scaling exponent of 1) reported in the literature on zero-pressure-gradient turbulent boundary layers. Theoretical arguments based on dimensional analysis indicate that the presence of a streamwise pressure gradient in sink-flow turbulent boundary layers makes the coefficient A(1) non-universal while leaving the scaling exponent -1 unaffected. This effect of the pressure gradient on the streamwise spectra, as discussed in the present study (experiments as well as theory), is consistent with other recent studies in the literature that are focused on the structural aspects of turbulent boundary layer flows in pressure gradients (Harun etal., J. Flui(d) Mech., vol. 715, 2013, pp. 477-498); the present paper establishes the link between these two. The variability of A(1) accommodated in the present framework serves to clarify the ideas of universality of the k(1)(-1) scaling.

Protein functional annotation relies on the identification of accurate relationships, sequence divergence being a key factor. This is especially evident when distant protein relationships are demonstrated only with three-dimensional structures. To address this challenge, we describe a computational approach to purposefully bridge gaps between related protein families through directed design of protein-like ``linker'' sequences. For this, we represented SCOP domain families, integrated with sequence homologues, as multiple profiles and performed HMM-HMM alignments between related domain families. Where convincing alignments were achieved, we applied a roulette wheel-based method to design 3,611,010 protein-like sequences corresponding to 374 SCOP folds. To analyze their ability to link proteins in homology searches, we used 3024 queries to search two databases, one containing only natural sequences and another one additionally containing designed sequences. Our results showed that augmented database searches showed up to 30% improvement in fold coverage for over 74% of the folds, with 52 folds achieving all theoretically possible connections. Although sequences could not be designed between some families, the availability of designed sequences between other families within the fold established the sequence continuum to demonstrate 373 difficult relationships. Ultimately, as a practical and realistic extension, we demonstrate that such protein-like sequences can be ``plugged-into'' routine and generic sequence database searches to empower not only remote homology detection but also fold recognition. Our richly statistically supported findings show that complementary searches in both databases will increase the effectiveness of sequence-based searches in recognizing all homologues sharing a common fold. Rice landraces are lineages developed by farmers through artificial selection during the long-term domestication process. Despite huge potential for crop improvement, they are largely understudied in India. Here, we analyse a suite of phenotypic characters from large numbers of Indian landraces comprised of both aromatic and non-aromatic varieties. Our primary aim was to investigate the major determinants of diversity, the strength of segregation among aromatic and non-aromatic landraces as well as that within aromatic landraces. Using principal component analysis, we found that grain length, width and weight, panicle weight and leaf length have the most substantial contribution. Discriminant analysis can effectively distinguish the majority of aromatic from non-aromatic landraces. More interestingly, within aromatic landraces long-grain traditional Basmati and short-grain non-Basmati aromatics remain morphologically well differentiated. The present research emphasizes the general patterns of phenotypic diversity and finds out the most important characters. It also confirms the existence of very unique short-grain aromatic landraces, perhaps carrying signatures of independent origin of an additional aroma quantitative trait locus in the indica group, unlike introgression of specific alleles of the BADH2 gene from the japonica group as in Basmati. We presume that this parallel origin and evolution of aroma in short-grain indica landraces are linked to the long history of rice domestication that involved inheritance of several traits from Oryza nivara, in addition to O. rufipogon. We conclude with a note that the insights from the phenotypic analysis essentially comprise the first part, which will likely be validated with subsequent molecular analysis.

Fine powders comprising nanocrystallites of Ba0.85Ca0.15Zr0.1Ti0.9O3 (BCZT) were synthesized via oxalate precursor method, which facilitated to obtain homogenous and large grain sized ceramics at a lower sintering temperature. The compacted powders were sintered at various temperatures in the range of 1200 degrees C-1500 degrees C for an optimized duration of 10 h. Interestingly the one that was sintered at 1450 degrees C/10 h exhibited well resolved Morphotrophic Phase Boundary. The average grain size associated with this sample was 30 mu m accompanied by higher domain density mostly with 90 degrees twinning. These were believed to have significant contribution towards obtaining large strain of about 0.2% and piezoelectric coefficient as high as 563 pC/N. The maximum force that was generated by BCZT ceramic (having 30 mu m grain size) was found to be 161 MPa, which is much higher than that of known actuator materials such as PZT (40MPa) and NKN-5-LT (7 MPa). The lattice strain and domain switching behavior of xBiScO(3)-(1-x) PbTiO3 (x = 0.40) was investigated as a function of cyclic field and grain orientation by in situ X-ray diffraction during application of electric fields. The electric field induced 200 lattice strain was measured to be five times larger than the 111 lattice strain in pseudorhombohedral xBiScO(3)-(1-x) PbTiO3 (x = 0.40). It is shown that the anomalous 200 lattice strain is not an intrinsic phenomenon, but arises primarily due to stress associated with the reorientation of the 111 domains in dense polycrystalline ceramic. In this paper, we study the exact controllability of a second order linear evolution equation in a domain with highly oscillating boundary with homogeneous Neumann boundary condition on the oscillating part of boundary. Our aim is to obtain the exact controllability for the homogenized equation. The limit problem with Neumann condition on the oscillating boundary is different and hence we need to study the exact controllability of this new type of problem. In the process of homogenization, we also study the asymptotic analysis of evolution equation in two setups, namely solution by standard weak formulation and solution by transposition method.
