In this manuscript, rotational spectra of four new isotopologues of the S-H center dot center dot center dot pi bonded C2H4 center dot center dot center dot H2S complex, i.e., C2D4 center dot center dot center dot H2S, C2D4 center dot center dot center dot D2S, C2D4 center dot center dot center dot HDS, and (CCH4)-C-13 center dot center dot center dot H2S have been reported and analyzed. All isotopologues except C2D4 center dot center dot center dot HDS show a four line pattern whereas a doubling of the transition frequencies was observed for C2D4 center dot center dot center dot HDS. These results together with our previous report on the title complex M. Goswami, P. K. Mandal, D. J. Ramdass, and E. Arunan, Chem. Phys. Lett. 393(1-3), 22-27 (2004)] confirm that both subunits (C2H4 and H2S) are involved in large amplitude motions leading to a splitting of each rotational transition to a quartet. Further, the results also confirm that the motions which are responsible for the observed splittings involve both monomers. Molecular symmetry group analysis, considering the interchange of equivalent H atoms in H2S and C2H4 could explain the observed four line pattern and their intensities in the microwave spectrum. In addition, hydride stretching fundamentals of the complex were measured using coherence-converted population transfer Fourier Transform Microwave-infrared (IR-MW double resonance) experiments in the S-H and C-H stretch regions. Changes in the tunneling splittings upon vibrational excitation are consistent with the isotopic dependence of pure rotational transitions. A complexation shift of 2.7-6.5 cm(-1) has been observed in the two fundamental S-H stretching modes of the H2S monomer in the complex. Vibrational pre-dissociation in the bound S-H stretch has been detected whereas the instrument-limited line-shapes in other S-H and C-H stretches indicate slower pre-dissociation rate. Some local perturbations in the vibrational spectra have been observed. Two combination bands have been observed corresponding to both the S-H stretching fundamentals and what appears to be the intermolecular stretching mode at 55 cm(-1). The tunneling splitting involved in the rotation of C2H4 unit has been deduced to be 1.5 GHz from the IR-MW results. In addition, ab initio barrier heights derived for different motions of the monomers support the experimental results and provide further insight into the motions causing the splitting. We address a physics-based solution of joule heating phenomenon in a single-layer graphene (SLG) sheet under the presence of Thomson effect. We demonstrate that the temperature in an isotopically pure (containing only C-12) SLG sheet attains its saturation level quicker than when doped with its isotopes (C-13). From the solution of the joule heating equation, we find that the thermal time constant of the SLG sheet is in the order of tenths of a nanosecond for SLG dimensions of a few micrometers. These results have been formulated using the electron interactions with the inplane and flexural phonons to demonstrate a field-dependent Landauer transmission coefficient. We further develop an analytical model of the SLG specific heat using the quadratic (out of plane) phonon band structure over the room temperature. Additionally, we show that a cooling effect in the SLG sheet can be substantially enhanced with the addition of C-13. The methodologies as discussed in this paper can be put forward to analyze the graphene heat spreader theory.

Four dinucleating bis(thiosemicarbazone) ligands and their zinc complexes have been synthesized and characterized by multinuclear NMR (H-1 and C-13), IR, UV-Vis, ESI-MS and fluorescence spectroscopic techniques. Their purity was assessed by elemental analysis. Cytotoxicity was tested against five human cancer cell lines using the sulphorhodamine B (SRB) assay, where one of the complexes, 1,3-bis{biacetyl-2'-(4 `'-N-pyrrolidinylthiosemicarbazone)-3'-(4 `'-N-pyrrolidinylthiosemicarbazone) zinc(II)} propane (6), was found to be quite cytotoxic against MCF-7 (breast cancer) and HepG2 (hepatoma cancer) cell lines, with a potency similar to that of the well known anticancer drug adriamycin. It is evident from the cellular uptake studies that the uptake is same for the active complex 6 and the inactive complex 8 (1,6-bis{biacetyl- 2'-(4 `'-N-pyrrolidinylthiosemicarbazone)-3'-(4 `'-N-pyrrolidinylthiosemicarbazone) zinc(II)} hexane) in MCF-7 and HepG2 cell lines. In vitro DNA binding and cleavage studies revealed that all complexes bind with DNA through electrostatic interaction, and cause no significant cleavage of DNA. (C) 2'13 Elsevier B. V. A systematic understanding of the noncovalent interactions that influence the structures of the cis conformers and the equilibrium between the cis and the trans conformers, of the X-Pro tertiary amide motifs, is presented based on analyses of H-1-, C-13-NMR and FTIR absorption spectra of two sets of homologous peptides, X-Pro-Aib-OMe and X-Pro-NH-Me (where X is acetyl, propionyl, isobutyryl and pivaloyl), in solvents of varying polarities. First, this work shows that the cis conformers of any X-Pro tertiary amide motif, including Piv-Pro, are accessible in the new motifs X-Pro-Aib-OMe, in solution. These conformers are uniquely observable by FTIR spectroscopy at ambient temperatures and by NMR spectroscopy from temperatures as high as 273 K. This is made possible by the persistent presence of n(i-1i)* interactions at Aib, which also influence the disappearance of steric effects at these cis X-Pro rotamers. Second, contrary to conventional understanding, the energy contribution of steric effects to the cis/trans equilibrium at the X-Pro motifs is found to be nonvariant (0.54 +/- 0.02 kcal/mol) with increase in steric bulk on the X group. Third, the current studies provide direct evidence for the weak intramolecular interactions namely the n(i-1i)*, the N-Pro center dot center dot center dot Hi+1 (C(5)a), and the C-7 hydrogen bond that operate and influence the structures, stabilities, and dynamics between different conformational states of X-Pro tertiary amide motifs. NMR and IR spectral data suggest that the cis conformers of X-Pro motifs are ensembles of short-lived rotamers about the C-X-N-Pro bond. (c) 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Biopolymers 101: 66-77, 2014.

Due to environmental concerns, health hazards to man and the evolution of resistance in insect pests, there have been constant efforts to discover newer insecticides both from natural sources and by chemical synthesis. Natural sources for novel molecules hold promise in view of their eco-friendly nature, selectivity and mammalian safety. We have isolated one natural bioactive molecule from the leaves of Lantana camara named Coumaran, based on various physical-chemical and spectroscopic techniques (IR, H-1 NMR, C-13 NMR and MS). Coumaran is highly toxic and very low concentration is needed for control of stored product insects. This molecule has potent grain protectant potential and caused significant reduction in F1 progeny of all the three species in the treated grain and the progeny was completely suppressed at 30 mu g/l. The differences in germination between the control and treated grains were not significant. The lack of any adverse effect of Coumaran on the seed germination is highly desirable for a grain protectant, becoming a potential source of biofumigant for economical and environmentally friendly pest control strategies against stored grain pests during storage of grains or pulses. A simple and efficient protocol for the synthesis of novel 2,6-bis(4-methoxyphenyl)-1-methylpiperidin-4-one oxime esters 4(a-q) is described. Initially, p-anisaldehyde 1 was condensed (Mannich reaction) with acetone and ammonium acetate trihydrate afforded 2,6-bis(4-methoxyphenyl)piperidin-4-one 2. Then, methylation followed by oximation with hydroxylamine hydrochloride (NH(2)OHa (TM) HCl) furnished a key scaffold 4. Further, to explore the enhanced biological properties of the piperidin-4-one core i.e. the key scaffold 4 was conjugated with substituted benzoyl chlorides in the presence of anhydrous K2CO3 as base to obtain novel 2,6-bis(4-methoxyphenyl)-1-methylpiperidin-4-one oxime esters 4(a-q) in excellent yields. The newly synthesized compounds were characterized by elemental analysis, IR, H-1 NMR, C-13 NMR and mass spectroscopic techniques, and screened for their in vitro antioxidant and antimicrobial activities. Most of the compounds exerted positive efficacy towards the biological assays performed. Among the synthesized analogues, compounds 4l and 4m exhibited promising antioxidant activity and on the other hand compounds 4b and 4d manifested persuasive antibacterial activity, whereas compound 4b displayed stupendous antifungal activity against A. flavus strain.

FT-IR (4000-400 cm(-1)) and FT-Raman (4000-200 cm(-1)) spectral measurements on solid 2,6-dichlorobenzonitrile (2,6-DCBN) have been done. The molecular geometry, harmonic vibrational frequencies and bonding features in the ground state have been calculated by density functional theory at the B3LYP/6-311++G (d,p) level. A comparison between the calculated and the experimental results covering the molecular structure has been made. The assignments of the fundamental vibrational modes have been done on the basis of the potential energy distribution (PED). To investigate the influence of intermolecular hydrogen bonding on the geometry, the charge distribution and the vibrational spectrum of 2,6-DCBN; calculations have been done for the monomer as well as the tetramer. The intermolecular interaction energies corrected for basis set superposition error (BSSE) have been calculated using counterpoise method. Based on these results, the correlations between the vibrational modes and the structure of the tetramer have been discussed. Molecular electrostatic potential (MEP) contour map has been plotted in order to predict how different geometries could interact. The Natural Bond Orbital (NBO) analysis has been done for the chemical interpretation of hyperconjugative interactions and electron density transfer between occupied (bonding or lone pair) orbitals to unoccupied (antibonding or Rydberg) orbitals. UV spectrum was measured in methanol solution. The energies and oscillator strengths were calculated by Time Dependent Density Functional Theory (TD-DFT) and matched to the experimental findings. TD-DFT method has also been used for theoretically studying the hydrogen bonding dynamics by monitoring the spectral shifts of some characteristic vibrational modes involved in the formation of hydrogen bonds in the ground and the first excited state. The C-13 nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) chemical shifts of the molecule were calculated by the Gauge independent atomic orbital (GIAO) method and compared with experimental results. Standard thermodynamic functions have been obtained and changes in thermodynamic properties on going from monomer to tetramer have been presented. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

We present a new method for rapid NMR data acquisition and assignments applicable to unlabeled (C-12) or C-13-labeled biomolecules/organic molecules in general and metabolomics in particular. The method involves the acquisition of three two dimensional (2D) NMR spectra simultaneously using a dual receiver system. The three spectra, namely: (1) G-matrix Fourier transform (GFT) (3,2)D C-13, H-1] HSQC-TOCSY, (2) 2D H-1-H-1 TOCSY and (3) 2D C-13-H-1 HETCOR are acquired in a single experiment and provide mutually complementary information to completely assign individual metabolites in a mixture. The GFT (3,2)D C-13, H-1] HSQC-TOCSY provides 3D correlations in a reduced dimensionality manner facilitating high resolution and unambiguous assignments. The experiments were applied for complete H-1 and C-13 assignments of a mixture of 21 unlabeled metabolites corresponding to a medium used in assisted reproductive technology. Taken together, the experiments provide time gain of order of magnitudes compared to the conventional data acquisition methods and can be combined with other fast NMR techniques such as non-uniform sampling and covariance spectroscopy. This provides new avenues for using multiple receivers and projection NMR techniques for high-throughput approaches in metabolomics.

Non-pedogenic carbonates, such as carbonate cement and nodules in the sandstones, are quite common in the terrestrial geological record. Unlike pedogenic carbonates, their stable isotope ratios lack investigations for paleo-climatic reconstructions. The present investigation therefore, explores the possibility of use of stable isotope studies of non-pedogenic carbonates from the Mb-Pleistocene Siwalik Group of sediments exposed in the Ramnagar sub-basin of the NW Himalaya. Petrographic studies reveal the dominance of micrite fabric in carbonate nodules both of pedogenic and non-pedogenic samples irrespective of specific stratigraphic unit However, calcite as cement in the sandstones shows the dominance of micrite fabric in the younger in age sediments. Seventy-two non-pedogenic carbonate samples from the carbonate nodules and cement in the Siwalik sandstones, ranging in age between similar to 1 Ma and 12.2 Ma, were analyzed for delta C-13 and delta O-18 values. The delta C-13 values vary from -24.77 parts per thousand to -1.1 parts per thousand and delta O-18 values vary from -15.34 parts per thousand to -7.81 parts per thousand. Pedogenic and non-pedogenic carbonates ranging in age between similar to 1 Ma and 6 Ma have largely similar delta C-13 values and the range of delta C-13 values indicate the dominance of C-4 type of vegetation. However, unlike pedogenic carbonates which showed the dominance of C-3 type of vegetation pre- 7 Ma on the basis of delta C-13 -depleted isotopic values (Singh et al., 2011), delta C-13 values are largely enriched in the corresponding aged non-pedogenic carbonates revealing no information on specific type of vegetation. Likewise, paleoprecipitational reconstructions from delta O-18 values in pedogenic carbonates showed a progressive increase in aridity from similar to 12 Ma to recent excluding short term increases in rainfall/monsoon intensity at around 10 Ma, 5 Ma, and 1.8 Ma (Singh et al., 2012). On the contrary, such reconstructions are not possible from the delta O-18 values of non-pedogenic carbonates and indeed the delta O-18 values of non-pedogenic carbonates are largely depleted to as much as 6 parts per thousand from the corresponding pedogenic carbonates. Such differences in delta C-13 and delta O-18 values of non-pedogenic carbonates from pedogenic carbonates are primarily due to the dependence of the former on groundwater conditions responsible for precipitating carbonate. Further, a comparison of isotopic values between non-pedogenic and pedogenic carbonates can be interpreted that post-6 Ma and pre-6 Ma non-pedogenic carbonates were largely formed by shallow and deep groundwater conditions respectively. The result of these investigative studies therefore, suggests that the stable delta C-13 and delta O-18 values of non-pedogenic carbonates, unlike the pedogenic carbonates and irrespective of nature of calcite fabric, showed their little importance in paleoclimatic and paleoecological reconstructions. The present work reveals the synthesis and antiproliferative effect of a series of 2, 3 disubstituted 4-thiazolidinone analogues on human leukemic cells. The chemical structures of newly synthesized compounds were confirmed by IR, H-1 NMR, C-13 NMR and mass spectral analysis. Compound methyl 3-methoxy-4-(4-oxo-3-(5-(piperazin-1-yl)pyridin-2-yl)thiazolidin-2-yl)be nzoate (5) displayed potent activity (IC50 9.71, 15.24 and 19.29 mu M) against Nalm6, K562, Jurkat cells. Cell cycle analysis and mitochondrial membrane potential further confirmed that compound 5 is cytotoxic and able to induce cell death. (C) 2014 Elsevier Masson SAS. All rights reserved.

A new NMR experiment that exploits the advantages of proton double quantum (DQ) NMR through a proton DQ-carbon single quantum (SQ) correlation experiment in the solid state is proposed. Analogous to the previously proposed 2D H-1 (DQ)-C-13 refocused INEPT experiment (Webber et al., 2010), the correlation between H-1 and C-13 is achieved through scalar coupling evolution, while the double quantum coherence among protons is generated through dipolar couplings. However, the new experiment relies on C-13 transverse coherence for scalar transfer. The new experiment dubbed MAS-J-H-1 (DQ)-C-13-HMQC, is particularly suited for unlabeled molecules and can provide higher sensitivity than its INEPT counterpart. The experiment is applied to four different samples. (C) 2014 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

The end of the Palaeozoic is marked by two mass-extinction events during the Middle Permian (Capitanian) and the Late Permian (Changhsingian). Given similarities between the two events in geochemical signatures, such as large magnitude negative C-13 anomalies, sedimentological signatures such as claystone breccias, and the approximate contemporaneous emplacement of large igneous provinces, many authors have sought a common causal mechanism. Here, a new high-resolution continental record of the Capitanian event from Portal Mountain, Antarctica, is compared with previously published Changhsingian records of geochemical signatures of weathering intensity and palaeoclimatic change. Geochemical means of discriminating sedimentary provenance (Ti/Al, U/Th and La/Ce ratios) all indicate a common provenance for the Portal Mountain sediments and associated palaeosols, so changes spanning the Capitanian extinction represent changes in weathering intensity rather than sediment source. Proxies for weathering intensity chemical index of alteration, W and rare earth element accumulation all decline across the Capitanian extinction event at Portal Mountain, which is in contrast to the increased weathering recorded globally at the Late Permian extinction. Furthermore, palaeoclimatic proxies are consistent with unchanging or cooler climatic conditions throughout the Capitanian event, which contrasts with Changhsingian records that all indicate a significant syn-extinction and post-extinction series of greenhouse warming events. Although both the Capitanian and Changhsingian event records indicate significant redox shifts, palaeosol geochemistry of the Changhsingian event indicates more reducing conditions, whereas the new Capitanian record of reduced trace metal abundances (Cr, Cu, Ni and Ce) indicates more oxidizing conditions. Taken together, the differences in weathering intensity, redox and the lack of evidence for significant climatic change in the new record suggest that the Capitanian mass extinction was not triggered by dyke injection of coal-beds, as in the Changhsingian extinction, and may instead have been triggered directly by the Emeishan large igneous province or by the interaction of Emeishan basalts with platform carbonates.

A series of simple quinoline-chalcone conjugates have been synthesized by Claisen-Schmidt condensation reactions of substituted acetophenones with 2-chloro-3-formyl-quinoline and evaluated for their nucleolytic activity. The structures of the synthesized quinoline-chalcone conjugates were confirmed by IR, H-1 NMR, C-13 NMR and mass spectral analyses. Most of the prepared compounds showed significant DNA binding and photocleavage activities. The incorporation of an electron-donating group into ring A caused a moderate increase in the DNA binding and photocleavage activities. Compounds 3c and 3d exhibited promising DNA photocleavage against pUC 19 DNA with 85% inhibition at 100 mu M concentration. A structure-activity relationship analysis of these compounds was performed; compounds 3c and 3d are potential candidates for future drug discovery and development.

A new type of copper(II) complex, CuL(phen)(2)](NO3) (CuIP), where L ((E)-N'-(2-oxoindolin-3-ylidene) benzohydrazide) is a N donor ligand and phen is the N, N-donor heterocyclic 1,10-phenanthroline, has been synthesized. The phenyl carbohydrazone conjugated isatin-based ligand L and CuIP were characterized by elemental analysis, infrared, UV-Vis, H-1 and C-13 NMR and ESI-mass spectral data, as well as single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The interaction of calf thymus DNA (CT DNA) with L and CuIP has been investigated by absorption, fluorescence and viscosity titration methods. The complex CuIP displays better binding affinity than the ligand L. The observed DNA binding constant (K-b = 4.15(+/- 0.18) x 10(5) M-1) and binding site size (s = 0.19), viscosity data together with molecular docking studies of CuIP suggest groove binding and/or a partial intercalative mode of binding to CT DNA. In addition, CuIP shows good binding propensity to the bovine serum albumin (BSA) protein, giving a K-BSA value of 1.25(+/- 0.24) x 10(6) M-1. In addition, the docking studies on DNA and human serum albumin (HSA) CuIP interactions are consistent with the consequence of binding experiments. The in vitro anti-proliferative study establishes the anticancer potency of the CuIP against the human cervical (HeLa) and breast (MCF7) cancer cells; noncancer breast epithelial (MCF10a) cells have also been investigated. CuIP shows better cytotoxicity and sensitivity towards cancer cells over noncancer ones than L under identical conditions, with the appearance of apoptotic bodies. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. An NMR-based approach for rapid characterization of translational diffusion of molecules has been developed. Unlike the conventional method of acquiring a series of 2D C-13 and H-1 spectra, the proposed approach involves a single 2D NMR spectrum, which can be acquired in minutes. Using this method, it was possible to detect the presence of intermediate oligomeric species of diphenylalanine in solution during the process of its selfassembly to form nanotubular structures.
