The reversible transition of wurtzite to rock salt phase under pressure is well reported in literature. The cubic phase is unstable under ambient conditions both in the bulk and in nanoparticles. This paper reports defect-induced stabilization of cubic ZnO phase in sub 20 nm ZnO particles and explores their optical properties. The size reduction was achieved by ball milling in a specially designed mill which allows a control of the milling temperature. The process of synthesis involved both variation of milling temperature (including low temperature similar to 150 K) and impact pressure. We show that these have profound influence in the introduction of defects and stabilization of the cubic phase. A molecular dynamics simulation is presented to explain the observed results. The measured optical properties have further supported the observations of defect-induced stabilization of cubic ZnO and reduction in particle size.

Gadolinium oxide, cerium oxide, and 10 mol% gadolinia doped ceria ceramic powders have been synthesized using combustion technique. Though the cubic gadolinia phase is stable at room temperature, single phase monoclinic gadolinia was obtained as a result of combustion synthesis using fuel lean and stoichiometric precursor compositions. This powder was subjected to calcination treatment and ceria doping to study the stability of phases and the rate of phase transformation from monoclinic to cubic gadolinia. It was found that monoclinic gadolinia transforms to cubic gadolinia upon calcination at temperatures less than 1200 degrees C. It was also found that rate of phase transformation is more for powder produced using fuel lean compositions; and the rate is enhanced upon ceria doping. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Neutron, synchrotron x-ray powder diffraction and dielectric studies have been performed for morphotropic phase boundary (MPB) compositions of the (1 - x )Na1/2Bi1/2TiO3-xPbTiO(3) system. At room temperature, the MPB compositions (0.10 < x <= 0.15) consist of a mixture of rhombohedral (space group R3c) and tetragonal ( space group P4mm) structures with the fraction of tetragonal phase increasing with increasing PbTiO3 content. On heating, while the rhombohedral phase just outside the MPB region, i.e. x = 0.10, transforms directly to a cubic phase, the rhombohedral phase of the MPB compositions transforms gradually to a tetragonal phase, until interrupted by a rhombohedral-cubic phase transition. The correspondence of the dielectric anomalies with the structural transitions of the different compositions has been examined and compared with earlier reports.

The wurtzite phase of ZnS nanocrystal has been prepared by annealing in 200-600 degrees C temperature range, its cubic phase of 2-3 nm size. prepared through soft chemical method. Results of isochronal experiments of 2 h at different temperatures indicate that visible transformation to wurtzite from cubic ZnS appears at a temperature of 400 degrees C, which is about three times smaller than that of bulk ZnS phase transition temperature. The phases, nanostructures, and optical absorption characteristics are obtained through X-ray diffraction. transmission electron microscopy, and UV-visible absorption spectroscopy. A stable and green photoluminescence emission peaked at 518 nm is observed from the 600 degrees C annealed samples, under ultraviolet light excitation.

Sr2SbMnO6 (SSM) powders were successfully synthesized at reasonably low temperatures via molten-salt synthesis (MSS) method using eutectic composition of 0.635 Li2SO4-0.365 Na2SO4 (flux). High-temperature cubic phase SSM was stabilized at room temperature by calcining the as-synthesized powders at 900 degrees C/10 h. The phase formation and morphology of these powders were characterized via X-ray powder diffraction and scanning electron microscopy, respectively. The SSM phase formation associated with similar to 60 nm sized crystallites was also confirmed by transmission electron microscopy. The activation energy associated with the particle growth was found to be 95 +/- 5 kJ mol(-1). The dielectric constant of the tetragonal phase of the ceramic (fabricated using this cubic phase powder) with and without the flux (sulphates) has been monitored as a function of frequency (100 Hz-1 MHz) at room temperature. Internal barrier layer capacitance (IBLC) model was invoked to rationalize the dielectric properties.

Temperature-dependent x-ray powder-diffraction study of the tetragonal compositions of PbTiO3-BiFeO3 series has revealed that, unlike for all the known ferroelectric perovskites, the compositions exhibiting giant tetragonality is stabilized from the cubic phase via a complex transition pathway which involve (i) formation of minor monoclinic phase with a large pseudotetragonality along with an intermediate tetragonal phase (major) with a small tetragonality, (ii) gradual vanishing of the intermediate tetragonal phase and concomitant increase in the monoclinic regions, and finally (iii) gradual transformation of the monoclinic phase to the tetragonal phase with giant tetragonality. The system seems to adopt such a complex transition pathway to create amicrostructure with very large number of domains and interfaces for stress relief, which would not have been possible in case of a direct cubic-tetragonal transition.

We report a large decrease in tetragonal to cubic phase transformation temperature when grain size of bulk CuFe2O4 is reduced by mechanical ball milling. The change in phase transformation temperature was inferred from in situ high temperature conductivity and x-ray diffraction measurements. The decrease in conductivity with grain size suggests that ball milling has not induced any oxygen vacancy while the role of cation distribution in the observed decrease in phase transformation temperature is ruled out from in-field Fe-57 Mossbauer and extended x-ray absorption fine structure measurements. The reduction in the phase transformation temperature is attributed to the stability of structures with higher crystal symmetry at lower grain sizes due to negative pressure effect. Phase relations in the system Mn-Rh-O are established at 1273 K by equilibrating different compositions either in evacuated quartz ampules or in pure oxygen at a pressure of 1.01 x 10(5) Pa. The quenched samples are examined by optical microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and energy-dispersive X-ray analysis (EDAX). The alloys and intermetallics in the binary Mn-Rh system are found to be in equilibrium with MnO. There is only one ternary compound, MnRh2O4, with normal spinel structure in the system. The compound Mn3O4 has a tetragonal structure at 1273 K. A solid solution is formed between MnRh2O4 and Mn3O4. The solid solution has the cubic structure over a large range of composition and coexists with metallic rhodium. The partial pressure of oxygen corresponding to this two-phase equilibrium is measured as a function of the composition of the spinel solid solution and temperature. A new solid-state cell, with three separate electrode compartments, is designed to measure accurately the chemical potential of oxygen in the two-phase mixture, Rh + Mn3-2xRh2xO4, which has 1 degree of freedom at constant temperature. From the electromotive force (emf), thermodynamic mixing properties of the Mn3O4-MnRh2O4 solid solution and Gibbs energy of formation of MnRh2O4 are deduced. The activities exhibit negative deviations from Raoult's law for most of the composition range, except near Mn3O4, where a two-phase region exists. In the cubic phase, the entropy of mixing of the two Rh3+ and Mn3+ ions on the octahedral site of the spinel is ideal, and the enthalpy of mixing is positive and symmetric with respect to composition. For the formation of the spinel (sp) from component oxides with rock salt (rs) and orthorhombic (orth) structures according to the reaction, MnO (rs) + Rh2O3 (orth) --> MnRh2O4 (sp), DELTAG-degrees = -49,680 + 1.56T (+/-500) J mol-1. The oxygen potentials corresponding to MnO + Mn3O4 and Rh + Rh2O3 equilibria are also obtained from potentiometric measurements on galvanic cells incorporating yttria-stabilized zirconia as the solid electrolyte. From these results, an oxygen potential diagram for the ternary system is developed.

Sr2SbMnO6 (SSMO) ceramics were, fabricated using the nanocrystalline powders obtained via molten salt synthesis (MSS) method. High temperature X-ray diffraction studies confirmed the structural phase transition (room temperature tetragonal (I4/mcm) to the cubic phase (Pm-3m)) temperature to be around 736K. The discontinuity in the phase transition indicated its first order nature reflecting the presence of ferroelectric-like distortions in SSMO prepared from MSS which seemed to be unique as it was not observed so far in the case of SSMO prepared using solid-state reaction method. The dielectric behavior of SSMO was studied in the 300-950 K temperature range at high frequencies (MHz range) in order to suppress the of space charge and related effects that dominate at such higher temperatures and mask the real phase transition.

We have investigated the structural evolution of La0.2Sr0.8MnO3 using temperature dependent high resolution synchrotron x-ray diffraction technique. In a wide temperature range, La0.2Sr0.8MnO3 reveals nanoscale structural inhomogeneity consisting of cubic and tetragonal phases. The present results suggest that domains of nanometer size of the tetragonal (low temperature) phase start nucleating in the cubic (high temperature) phase even above the Neel temperature (T-N). The tetragonal phase fraction increases substantially below T-N. Detailed analysis suggests that the twinned phase is tetragonal, orbital ordered, and insulating. At temperatures below 170 K, a small amount of the cubic phase is retained. The present results reveal the significance of the connectivity between the nanoscale structural phase separation with the physical properties.

A systematic x-ray and neutron powder diffraction study of the giant tetragonality multiferroic (1-x) BiFeO3-(x) PbTiO3 have revealed that the compositions close to the morphotropic phase boundary present two different structural phase transition scenarios on cooling from the cubic phase: (i) cubic -> tetragonal (T-2) + tetragonal (T-1) -> tetragonal (T-1) and (ii) cubic -> tetragonal (T-2) + tetragonal (T-1) + rhombohedral (R3c) -> tetragonal (T-1) + rhombohedral (R3c). The comparatively larger tetragonality (c/a - 1) of the T-1 phase as compared to the coexisting isostructural T-2 phase is shown to be a result of significantly greater degree of overlap of the Pb/Bi-6s and Ti/Fe-3d with the O-2p orbitals as compared to that in the T-2 phase. The formation/suppression of the minor metastable rhombohedral phase seems to be governed by subtle play of local kinetic factors. In the scenario when the minor rhombohedral (R) phase is formed along with the tetragonal phases it is able to accommodate the large transformation stress in the system due to formation of the tetragonal phases, and prevent the solid from disintegration into powder after sintering. When the metastable rhombohedral phase is not formed, the large transformation strain ruptures the grain boundaries leading to fragmentation of the dense solid to powder. The current study involves synthesis of a series of Tb3+ doped ZrO2 nanophosphors by solution combustion method using oxalyl dihydrazide as fuel. The as-formed ZrO2:Tb3+ nanophosphors having different concentrations of Tb3+ (1-11 mol%) were characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and UV-Visible spectroscopic techniques and the materials were subjected to photoluminescence and photocatalytic dye decolorization studies. The PXRD analysis indicates the formation of tetragonal symmetry up to 5 mol% concentration of Tb3+. Further increase in Tb3+ concentration has lead to cubic phase formation and the same was confirmed by Rietveld refinement analysis. SEM images revealed that material was highly porous in nature comprising of large voids and cracks with irregular morphology. TEM and SAED images clearly confirm the formation of high quality tetragonal nanocrystals. The emissive properties of nanophosphors were found to be dependent on Tb3+ dopant concentration. The green emission of the material was turned to white emission with the increase of Tb3+ ion concentration. The photocatalytic activities of these nanophosphors were probed for the decolorization of Congo red under UV and Sunlight irradiation. All the photocatalysts showed enhanced activity under UV light compared to Sunlight. The photocatalyst with 7 mol% Tb3+ showed enhanced activity attributed to effective separation of charge carriers due to phase transformation from tetragonal to cubic. The influence of crystallite size and PL on charge carrier trapping-recombination dynamics was investigated. The study successfully demonstrates synthesis of tetragonal and cubic ZrO2:Tb3+ green nanophosphors with superior photoluminescence and photocatalytic activities. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. We report ab initio calculations for the band dispersions and total as well as partial densities of states for vacancy ordered, clustered spinels, GaMo4S8 and GaV4S8. Results are presented for the high temperature cubic phase for both compounds. Additionally, we discuss results of similar calculations for GaMo4S8 in an idealized cubic structure, as well as the nonmagnetic and the ferromagnetic states of the low temperature rhombohedral structure. Comparison of these results allows us to discuss the unusual aspects of the electronic structure of this interesting class of compounds, and provide estimates of the crystal-field and exchange splitting strengths.

Single crystals of K, Rb and Cs perchlorates have been grown by the counter diffusion of the respective ions and CIO4 through the gel medium. Studies on nucleation, growth kinetics, morphological aspects and purity are discussed in this paper. The dielectric constant, ~b, as well as loss measured along the longest axis, exhibits an anomaly at the transition temperature, Tt, in all the three crystals. It is found that the peak values of Tt are approximately 800, 100 and 53 in K, Rb and Cs perchlorates, respectively. The dielectric anomaly and the large value of c b in the cubic phase are discussed in terms of the degree of disorder of the CIO~ group and the possible contribution from defects.

Donor doped BaTiO3 ceramics become insulating5 under controlled conditions with effective dielectric constants >10. The changes in EPR signals indicate that a certain fraction of the donor doped BaTiO3 is cubic even at room temperature and that the cubic fraction increases with the donor content. X-ray powder diffraction data support the EPR results. The coexistence of both the phases over a range of temperature is characteristic of diffused phase transition. The effect of grain size variation on EPR signal intensities indicate that the boundary layers surrounding the grains may constitute the cubic phase as a result of higher Ba-vacancies and donor contents at the grain boundary layer than in the bulk. Since the acceptor states arising from the Ba-vacancies and the impurities are activated in the cubic phase, they capture electrons from the conduction band, rendering the cubic phase electrically more insulating than the semiconductive tetragonal grain interiors. Thus, the cubic grain boundary layers act as effective dielectric media where the field tends to concentrate.
