The study of models for ``metal-enzyme-substrate'' interaction has been a proactive area of research owing to its biological and pharmacological importance. In this regard the ternary copper uracil complex with 1,10-phenanthroline represents metal-enzyme-substrate system for DNA binding enzymes. The synthesis of the complex, followed by slow evaporation of the reaction mixture forms two concomitant solvatomorph crystals viz., {Cu(phen)(mu-ura)(H2O)](n)center dot H2O (1a)} and {Cu(phen)(mu-ura)(H2O)](n)center dot CH3OH (1b)}. Both complexes are structurally characterized, while elemental analysis, IR and EPR spectra were recorded for 1b (major product). In both complexes, uracil coordinates uniquely via N1 and N3 nitrogen atom acting as a bidentate bridging ligand forming a 1-D polymer. The two solvatomorphs were quantitatively analyzed for the differences with the aid of Hirshfeld surface analysis. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The reaction of [M2Cl2(mu-Cl)(2)(PR3)(2)] (M=Pd or Pt; PR3=PEt3, PBu3, PMe2Ph, PMePh2) with lithium amidinate or sodium triazenide gave binuclear complexes containing amidinato- or triazenido-bridges, [M2Cl2(mu-ArNENAr)(2)(PR3)(2)] (E=CH, CMe or N). These complexes were characterized by elemental analysis and NMR (H-1, P-31 or Pt-195) data. The structures of two complexes, [(PdCl2)-Cl-2(mu-PhNC(Me)NPh)(2)(PMe2Ph)(2)] (10) and [Pt2Cl2(mu-PhNNNPh)(2)(PEt3)(2)] (11) were established by single crystal X-ray structural analyses. The Pt-195 NMR data Show coupling between two metal centers in the cis triazenido-bridged complex. The corresponding amidinate bridged complex does not show coupling. The role of the bridging ligand in mediating interaction between the metal centers is probed through Extended Huckel Theory (EHT) calculations. It is suggested that M-M interactions are primarily affected by the bridging ligands

Three new transition metal complexes using 2-pyrimidineamidoxime (pmadH(2)) as multidentate chelating and/or bridging ligand have been synthesized and characterized. The ligand pmadH(2) has two potential bridging functional groups mu-O and mu-(N-O)] and consequently shows several coordination modes. While a polymeric 1D Cu-II complex Cu(pmadH(2))(2)(NO3)](NO3) (1) was obtained upon treatment of Cu(NO3)(2)center dot 3H(2)O with pmadH(2) at room temperature in the absence of base, a high temperature reaction in the presence of base yielded a tetranuclear Cu-II-complex Cu-4(pmad)(2)(pmadH)(2)(NO3)](NO3)(H2O) (2). One of the Cu-II centers is in a square pyramidal environment while the other three are in a square planar geometry. Reaction of the same ligand with an equimolar mixture of both Cu(NO3)(2)center dot 3H(2)O and NiCl2 center dot 6H(2)O yielded a tetranuclear heterometallic (Cu2Ni2II)-Ni-II complex Cu2Ni2(pmad)(2)(pmadH)(2)Cl-2]center dot H2O (3) containing both square planar (Ni-II) and square pyramidal (Cu-II) metal centers. Complexes 1-3 represent the first examples of polynuclear metal complexes of 2-pyrimidineamidoxime. The analysis of variable temperature magnetic susceptibility data of 2 reveals that both ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic interactions exist in this complex (J(1) = +10.7 cm(-1) and J(2) = -2.7 cm(-1) with g = 2.1) leading to a resultant ferromagnetic behavior. Complex 3 shows expected antiferromagnetic interaction between two Cu-II centers through -N-O- bridging pathway with J(1) = -3.4 cm(-1) and g = 2.08. DFT calculations have been used to corroborate the magnetic results.

Reaction of formamide with Ni(NO3)(2)center dot 6H(2)O under hydrothermal condition in a mixture of MeOH/H2O forms a two-dimensional formate bridged sheet Ni(HCOO)(2)(MeOH)(2) (1). X-ray structure analysis reveals the conversion of formamide to formate which acts as a bridging ligand in complex 1 where the axial sites of Ni(II) are occupied by methanol used as a solvent. An analogous reaction in presence of 4,4'-bipyridyl (4,4'-bipy) yielded a three-dimensional structure Ni(HCOO)(2)(4,4'-bpy) (2). DC magnetic measurements as a function of temperature and field established the presence of spontaneous magnetization with T-c (Curie temperature) = 17 and 20.8 K in 1 and 2, respectively, which can be attributed due to spin-canting. DFT calculations were performed to corroborate the magnetic results of 1 and 2. (C) 2010 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

An amine functionalized polyaniline (AMPANI) derivative has been grafted onto exfoliated graphite oxide (EGO). The synthesis involved the in-situ chemical oxidative polymerization of functionalized aniline monomer in the presence of EGO with diaminobenzene acting as a bridging ligand to yield EGAMPANI. The synthesized compound was characterized by FT-IR and FT-Raman spectroscopy as well as thermogravimetric and X-ray diffraction analysis. The EGAMPANI was then used to modify a carbon paste electrode (CPE), which was applied for multi-elemental sensing of Pb2+, Cd2+ and Hg2+ ions using differential pulse anodic stripping voltammetty. The limits of detection achieved using the EGAMPANI modified CPE were 22 x 10(-6) M for Hg2+ ion, 1.2 x 10(-6) M for Cd2+ ion and 9.8 x 10(-7) M for Pb2+ ion. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. Three new ditopic imidazole ligands (2-4) were synthesized in high yields and characterized by various spectroscopic techniques. These ligands resulted in the formation of 3 + 6] self-assembled trinuclear barrels (5-7) in quantitative yields by stoichiometric combination of individual ligands and Pd(NO3)(2) in DMSO. All the three assemblies (5-7) were characterized by `H NMR and ESI-MS analysis, and subsequently, structures of the complexes 5 and 6 were confirmed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies. Structure analysis reveals the presence of NO3- counter anions in the intermolecular channels/pockets, which could potentially act as H-bonding sites between adsorbed water molecules within the channels. In fact, both the assemblies (5 and 6) showed water uptake (136.58, and 123.78 cm(3) g(-1), respectively) at ambient temperature under maximum allowable humidity. In addition, free aldehyde group present in the bridging ligand in complex 7 provides reactive site for postassembly modification. Herein, Knoevenagel condensation with Meldrum's acid was utilized under mild conditions by targeting aldehyde group appended in prefabricated complex 7 and transformed into a different complex (8) with altered functional group. Such postassembly functionalization enables incorporation of a new functional group without disrupting the integrity of the trifacial structure.

Anion directed, template syntheses of two dinuclear copper(II) complexes of mono-condensed Schiff base ligand Hdipn (4-[(3-aminopentylimino)-methyl]-benzene-1,3-diol) involving 2,4- dihydroxybenzaldehyde and 1,3-diaminopentane were realized in the presence of bridging azide and acetate anions. Both complexes, [Cu-2(dipn)(2)(N-3)(2)] (1) and [Cu-2(dip(n))(2)(OAc)(2)] (2) have been characterized by X-ray crystallography. The two mononuclear units are joined together by basal-apical, double end-on azido bridges in complex 1 and by basal-apical, double mono-atomic acetate oxygen-bridges in 2. Both complexes form rectangular grid-like supramolecular structures via H-bonds connecting the azide or acetate anion and the p-hydroxy group of 2,4- dihydroxybenzaldehyde. Variable-temperature (300-2 K) magnetic susceptibility measurements reveal that complex 1 has antiferromagnetic coupling (J = -2.10 cm (1)) through the azide bridge while 2 has intra-dimer ferromagnetic coupling through the acetate bridge and inter-dimer antiferromagnetic coupling through H-bonds (J = 2.85 cm (1), J' = -1.08 cm (1)). The ligand bis(diphenylphosphino) isopropylamine (dppipa) has been shown to be a versatile ligand sporting different coordination modes and geometries dictated by copper(I). Most of the molecular structures were confirmed by X-ray crystallography. It is found in a chelating mode, in a monomeric complex when the ligand to copper ratio is 2:1. A tetrameric complex is formed when low ratios of ligand to metal (1: 2) were used. But with increasing ratios of ligand to metal (1: 1 and 2: 1), a trimer or a dimer was obtained depending on the crystallization conditions. Variable temperature P-31{H-1} NMR spectra of these complexes in solution showed that the Cu-P bond was labile and the highly strained 4-membered structure chelate found in the solid state readily converted to a bridged structures. On the other hand, complexes with the ligand in a bridging mode in the solid state did not form chelated structures in solution. The effect of adding tetra-alkylammonium salts to solutions of various complexes of dppipa were probed by P-31{H-1} NMR and revealed the effect of counter ions on the stability of complexes in solution. Synthesis, structural characteristics, magnetic studies and DFT calculations in Ni(II) dinuclear complexes containing two bridging N-3(-) and an O-(HO)-O-... linkage reveal the existence of ferromagnetic interactions between Ni(II) centers via N-3(-) ligands and antiferromagnetic interactions through the H-bonded moiety. The overall magnetic behavior of the system depends on the delicate balance between these two competing interactions.

The ligand bis(diphenylphosphino)aniline (dppan) has been shown to be a versatile ligand sporting different coordination modes and geometries as dictated by copper(I) and the counter ion. The molecular structures of its Cu(I) complexes were characterized by X-ray crystallography. The ligand was found in a chelating mode and monomeric complexes were formed when the ligand to copper ratio was 2: 1 and the anion was non-coordinating. However, with thiocyanate as the counter anion, the ligand was found to adopt two different modes, with one ligand chelating and the other acting as a monodentate ligand. With CuX (X = Cl, Br), dppan formed a tetrameric complex when the ligand and metal were reacted in the ratio of 1:1. But reactions containing ligand and metal in the ratios of 1: 2 or 2: 1, resulted in the formation of a mixture of species in solution. Crystallization however, led to the isolation of the tetrameric complex. Variable temperature P-31{H-1} NMR spectra of the isolated tetramers did not show the presence of chelated structures in solution. Tetra-alkylammonium salts were added to solutions of various complexes of dppan and studied by P-31{H-1} NMR to probe the effect of anions on the stability of complexes in solution. The Cu-dppan complexes were robust and did not interconvert with other structures in solution unlike the bis(diphenylphosphino) isopropylamine complexes. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Three copper-azido complexes Cu-4(N-3)(8)(L-1)(2)(MeOH)(2)](n) (1), Cu-4(N-3)(8)(L-1)(2)] (2), and Cu-5(N-3)(10)(L-1)(2)](n) (3) L-1 is the imine resulting from the condensation of pyridine-2-carboxaldehyde with 2-(2-pyridyl)ethylamine] have been synthesized using lower molar equivalents of the Schiff base ligand with Cu(NO3)(2)center dot 3H(2)O and an excess of NaN3. Single crystal X-ray structures show that the basic unit of the complexes 1 and 2 contains Cu-4(II) building blocks; however, they have distinct basic and overall structures due to a small change in the bridging mode of the peripheral pair of copper atoms in the linear tetranudear structures. Interestingly, these changes are the result of changing the solvent system (MeOH/H2O to EtOH/H2O) used for the synthesis, without changing the proportions of the components (metal to ligand ratio 2:1). Using even lower proportions of the ligand, another unique complex was isolated with Cu-5(II) building units, forming a two-dimensional complex (3). Magnetic susceptibility measurements over a wide range of temperature exhibit the presence of both antiferromagnetic (very weak) and ferromagnetic exchanges within the tetranuclear unit structures. Density functional theory calculations (using B3LYP functional, and two different basis sets) have been performed on the complexes 1 and 2 to provide a qualitative theoretical interpretation of their overall magnetic behavior.

The binding of xylo-oligosaccharides to Chainia endoxylanase resulted in a decrease in fluorescence intensity of the enzyme with the formation of 1:1 complex. Equilibrium and thermodynamic parameters of ligand binding were determined by fluorescence titrations and titration calorimetry. The affinity of xylanase for the oligosaccharides increases in the order X-2 < X-3 < X-4 less than or equal to X-5. Contributions from the enthalpy towards the free energy change decreased with increasing chain length from X-2 to X-4, whereas an increase in entropy was observed, the change in enthalpy and entropy of binding being compensatory. The entropically driven binding process suggested that hydrophobic interactions as well as hydrogen bonds play a predominant role in ligand binding.

Several mechanisms have been proposed to explain the action of enzymes at the atomic level. Among them, the recent proposals involving short hydrogen bonds as a step in catalysis by Gerlt and Gassman [1] and proton transfer through low barrier hydrogen bonds (LBHBs) [2, 3] have attracted attention. There are several limitations to experimentally testing such hypotheses, Recent developments in computational methods facilitate the study of active site-ligand complexes to high levels of accuracy, Our previous studies, which involved the docking of the dinucleotide substrate UpA to the active site of RNase A [4, 5], enabled us to obtain a realistic model of the ligand-bound active site of RNase A. From these studies, based on empirical potential functions, we were able to obtain the molecular dynamics averaged coordinates of RNase A, bound to the ligand UpA. A quantum mechanical study is required to investigate the catalytic process which involves the cleavage and formation of covalent bonds. In the present study, we have investigated the strengths of some of the hydrogen bonds between the active site residues of RNase A and UpA at the ab initio quantum chemical level using the molecular dynamics averaged coordinates as the starting point. The 49 atom system and other model systems were optimized at the 3-21G level and the energies of the optimized systems were obtained at the 6-31G* level. The results clearly indicate the strengthening of hydrogen bonds between neutral residues due to the presence of charged species at appropriate positions. Such a strengthening manifests itself in the form of short hydrogen bonds and a low barrier for proton transfer. In the present study, the proton transfer between the 2'-OH of ribose (from the substrate) and the imidazole group from the H12 of RNase A is influenced by K41, which plays a crucial role in strengthening the neutral hydrogen bond, reducing the barrier for proton transfer.

A new heterocycle, namely 2-(furyl)-3-(furfuralimino)-1,2-dihydroquinazolin-4(3H)-one (ffdq) was formed by the ondensation of 2-aminobenzoylhydrazide with furfural and characterized by physico-chemical, spectroscopic, and single crystal X-ray diffraction studies. A series of complexes of ffdq have been synthesized and characterized by physico-chemical, spectroscopic, and thermal studies. According to the i.r. and 1H-n.m.r. spectra ffdq behaves as a bidentate ligand coordinating through quinazoline oxygen and azomethine nitrogen. The FAB-mass spectrum of the Cd(II) complex indicates the monomeric nature of this complex. The X-band e.p.r. spectrum of the Cu(II) complex and thermal stabilities of the Co(II) and Ni(II) complexes are discussed.
