An accretion flow is necessarily transonic around a black hole. However, around a neutron star it may or may not be transonic, depending on the inner disk boundary conditions influenced by the neutron star. I will discuss various transonic behavior of the disk fluid in general relativistic (or pseudo general relativistic) framework. I will address that there are four types of sonic/critical point. possible to form in an accretion disk. It will be shown that how the fluid properties including location of sonic point's vary with angular momentum of the compact object which controls the overall disk dynamics and outflows.

Seven L-phenylalanine based alkyl (monopolar) and alkanediyl (bipolar) derivatives are synthesized; while the bipolar urethane amides form gels and show strong adhesive properties, the monopolar analogues form fibrous nanoscopic cloth-like tapes.

We provide a 2.5-dimensional solution to a complete set of viscous hydrodynamical equations describing accretion- induced outflows and plausible jets around black holes/compact objects. We prescribe a self-consistent advective disk-outflow coupling model, which explicitly includes the information of vertical flux. Inter-connecting dynamics of an inflow-outflow system essentially upholds the conservation laws. We provide a set of analytical family of solutions through a self-similar approach. The flow parameters of the disk-outflow system depend strongly on the viscosity parameter α and the cooling factor.
Time dependent rotational flow of a viscous fluid over an infinite porous disk with a magnetic field

Both the semi-similar and self-similar flows due to a viscous fluid rotating with time dependent angular velocity over a porous disk of large radius at rest with or without a magnetic field are investigated. For the self-similar case the resulting equations for the suction and no mass transfer cases are solved numerically by quasilinearization method whereas for the semi-similar case and injection in the self-similar case an implicit finite difference method with Newton's linearization is employed. For rapid deceleration of fluid and for moderate suction in the case of self-similar flow there exists a layer of fluid, close to the disk surface where the sense of rotation is opposite to that of the fluid rotating far away. The velocity profiles in the absence of magnetic field are found to be oscillatory except for suction. For the accelerating freestream, (semi-similar flow) the effect of time is to reduce the amplitude of the oscillations of the velocity components. On the other hand the effect of time for the oscillating case is just the opposite.

Experimental results pertaining to the initiation, dynamics and mechanism of cavitation erosion on poly(methyl methacrylate) specimens tested in a rotating disk device are described in detail. Erosion normally starts at the location nearest to the center of rotation (CR). As the exposure time to cavitation increases, additional erosion areas or sites appear away from the CR and secondary erosion (induced by eroded pits) spreads upstream and merges with the main pit. The microcracks increase in density towards the end of the incubation period and transform into macrocracks in most cases. A study of light optical photographs and scanning electron micrographs of the eroded area shows that material particles are removed from the network of cracks because of crack joining and pits indicate particle debris. Optical degradation (loss of transmittance) is observed to be greater on the back of the specimen than on the front.

A formulation in terms of a Fredholm integral equation of the first kind is given for the axisymmetric problem of a disk oscillating harmonically in a viscous fluid whose surface is contaminated with a surfactant film. The equation of the first kind is converted to a pair of coupled integral equations of the second kind, which are solved numerically. The resistive torque on the disk is evaluated and surface velocity profiles are computed for varying values of the ratio of the coefficient of surface shear viscosity to the coefficient of viscosity of the substrate fluid, and the depth of the disk below the surface.

An analytical study for the static strength of adhesive lap joints is presented. The earlier solutions of Volkersen [i], DeBruyne[2] and others were limited to linear adhesives. The influence of adhesive non-linearity was first considered by Grimes' et al[3] and Dickson et al [4]. Recently Hart-Smith[5] successfully introduced elastic-plastic behaviour of the adhesive. In the present study the problem is formulated for general non-linear adhesive behaviour and an efficient numerical algorithm is written for the solution. Bilinear and trilinear models for the nonlinearity yield closed form analytical solutions.

In this article, the effect of two solvents, namely dimethyl formamide (DMF) and N-methyl pyrrolidone (NMP), on the dispersion effectiveness and the resulting electrical and mechanical properties of multi-walled carbonanotubes (MNCNT) filled structural adhesive grade epoxy nanocomposites was studied. The solvents were used mainly to reduce the viscosity of the resin system to effectively disperse the nanofiller. The dispersion was carried out under vacuum using high energy sonic waves. SEM was undertaken to study the dispersion effectiveness. Electrical resistivity, tensile properties, and glass transition of the nanocomposites were studied. Between DMF and NMP, the former proved better in terms of dispersion effectiveness and the resulting electrical and mechanical properties of the nanocomposites. Addition of MWCNT into AV138M resulted in an increase in glass transition temperature irrespective of the solvent used and in both cases percolation threshold was found with respect to reduction in electrical resistivity of the nanocomposites. Less agglomeration and hence better interaction between CNT and epoxy was observed in the samples prepared using DMF compared with that using NMP.

We address the longstanding problem of recovering dynamical information from noisy acoustic emission signals arising from peeling of an adhesive tape subject to constant traction velocity. Using the phase space reconstruction procedure we demonstrate the deterministic chaotic dynamics by establishing the existence of correlation dimension as also a positive Lyapunov exponent in a midrange of traction velocities. The results are explained on the basis of the model that also emphasizes the deterministic origin of acoustic emission by clarifying its connection to stick-slip dynamics.

We investigate the dynamics of peeling of an adhesive tape subjected to a constant pull speed. Due to the constraint between the pull force, peel angle and the peel force, the equations of motion derived earlier fall into the category of differential-algebraic equations (DAE) requiring an appropriate algorithm for its numerical solution. By including the kinetic energy arising from the stretched part of the tape in the Lagrangian, we derive equations of motion that support stick-slip jumps as a natural consequence of the inherent dynamics itself, thus circumventing the need to use any special algorithm. In the low mass limit, these equations reproduce solutions obtained using a differential-algebraic algorithm introduced for the earlier singular equations. We find that mass has a strong influence on the dynamics of the model rendering periodic solutions to chaotic and vice versa. Apart from the rich dynamics, the model reproduces several qualitative features of the different waveforms of the peel force function as also the decreasing nature of force drop magnitudes.

The mechanism by which outflows and plausible jets are driven from black hole systems still remains observationally elusive. This notwithstanding, several observational evidences and deeper theoretical insights reveal that accretion and outflow/jet are strongly correlated. We model an advective disk-outflow coupled dynamics, incorporating explicitly the vertical flux. Inter-connecting dynamics of outflow andaccretion essentially upholds the conservation laws. We investigate the properties of the disk-outflow surface and its strong dependence on the rotation parameter of the black hole. The energetics of the disk outflow strongly depend on the mass, accretion rate, and spin of the black holes. The model clearly shows that the outflow power extracted from the disk increases strongly with the spin of the black hole, inferring that the power of the observed astrophysical jets has a proportional correspondence with the spin of the central object. In the case of blazars (BL Lacs and flat spectrum radio quasars, FSRQs), most of their emission are believed to be originated from their jets. It is observed that BL Lacs are relatively low luminous than FSRQs. The luminosity might be linked to the power of the jet, which in turn reflects that the nuclear regions of the BL Lac objects have a relatively low spinning black hole compared to that in the case of FSRQs. If extreme gravity is the source that powers strong outflows and jets, then the spin of the black hole, perhaps, might be the fundamental parameter to account for the observed astrophysical processes in an accretion powered system.

Dry sliding wear behavior of die-cast ADC12 aluminum alloy composites reinforced with short alumina fibers were investigated by using a pin-on-disk wear tester. The Al2O3 fibers were 4 mu m in diameter and were present in volume fractions (T-f)ranging from 0.03 to 0.26, The length of the fiber varied from 40 to 200 mu m. Disks of aluminum-alumina composites were rubbed against a pin of nitrided stainless steel SUS440B with a load of 10 N at a sliding velocity of 0.1 m/s. The unreinforced ADC 12 aluminum alloy and their composites containing low volume fractions of alumina (V-f approximate to 0.05) showed a sliding-distance-dependent transition from severe to mild wear. However, composites containing high volume fractions of alumina ( V-f > 0.05) exhibited only mild wear for all sliding distances. The duration of occurrence of the severe wear regime and the wear rate both decrease with increasing volume fraction. In MMCs the wear rate in the mild wear regime decreases with increase in volume fraction: reaching a minimum value at V-f = 0.09 Beyond V-f = 0.09 the wear rate increasesmarginally. On the other hand, the wear rate of the counterface (steel pin) was found to increase moderately with increase in V-f. From the analysis of wear data and detailed examination of (a) worn surfaces, (b) their cross-sections and (c) wear debris, two modes of wear mechanisms have been identified to be operative, in these materials and these are: (i) adhesive wear in the case of unreinforced matrix material and in MMCs with low Vf and (ii) abrasive wear in the case of MMCs with high V-f. The use of relatively low modulus adhesive at the ends of overlap in a bi-adhesive bondline of a bonded joint can reduce the stress concentration significantly and, therefore, potentially lead to higher strength of the joint. This study presents the two-dimensional and three-dimensional nonlinear (geometric and material) finite element analyses of adhesively bonded single lap joints having modulus-graded bondline under monotonic loading conditions. The adhesives were modelled as an elasto-plastic multi-linear material, while the substrates were regarded as both linear elastic and bi-linear elasto-plastic material. The computational simulations have been performed to investigate the bondline behaviour by studying the stress and strain distributions both at the mid-plane as well as at the interface of the bondline. It has been observed that the static strength is higher for joints with bi-adhesive bondlines compared to those with single adhesives in bondline. Higher joint strength has also been observed for optimum bi-adhesive bondline ratio through parametric studies. Effects of load level, and bondline thickness on stress distribution in the bi-adhesive bondline have also been studied. 3D analysis results reveal the existence of complex multi-axial stress/strain state at the ends of the overlap in the bondline which cannot be observed in 2D plane strain analysis. About 1/3rd of the width of the joint from the free edge in the width direction has 3D stress state, especially in the compliant adhesive of the bondline. Magnitudes of longitudinal and lateral stress/strain components are comparable to peel stress/strain components. It has also been analytically shown that the in-plane global stiffness of the joint remains unaffected by modulus gradation of the bondline adhesive. (C) Koninklijke Brill NV, Leiden, 2010.
