Diethyl allyl phosphate (DEAP) monomer has been synthesized, and characterized, using H-1 NMR and direct ionization mass spectrometric (DI-MS) techniques. It was free-radically polymerized to yield the poly(diethyl allyl phosphate) (PDEAP). The direct pyrolysis-mass spectrometric (DP-MS) analysis of the PDEAP revealed that it undergoes thermal degradation to yield mainly the monomer. Utility of PDEAP as a potent flame-retardant additive in polystyrene (PS) and poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) has also been established.

A correlation has been established between the heat of depolymerization (DeltaH) of vinyl polymers for going from solid polymer state to gaseous monomer state and the activation energy (E) of degradation. On this basis it has been shown that the rate controlling step in the degradation lies in the initiation step. Attempt has been made to correlate theE and DeltaH with glass transition temperature (Tg) and melting temperature (Tm) of the polymers.[/ p]

Poly( ethylene oxide), poly(vinyl alcohol): and their blend in a 40 : 60 mole ratio were doped with aluminum isopropoxide. Their structural, thermal, and electrical properties were studied. Aluminum isopropoxide acts as a Lewis acid and thus significantly influences the electrical properties of the polymers and the blend. It also acts as a scavanger for the trace quantities of water p-resent in them, thereby reducing the magnitude of proton transport. It also affects the structure of polymers that manifests in the thermal transformation and decomposition characteristics.

We present results on interfacial shear rheology measurements on Langmuir monolayers of two different polymers, poly(vinyl acetate) and poly(methyl methacrylate) as a function of surface concentration and temperature. While for the high glass transition poly(methyl methacrylate) polymer we find a systematic transition from a viscous dominated regime to an elastic dominated regime as surface concentration is increased, monolayers of the low glass transition polymer, poly(vinyl acetate), remain viscous even at very high surface concentrations. We further interpret the results in terms of the soft glassy rheology model of Sollich et al. P. Sollich, F. C. Lequeux, P. Hebraud and M. E. Cates, Phys. Rev. Lett., 1997, 78, 2020-2023] and provide evidence of possible reduction in glass transition temperatures in both poly(methyl methacrylate) and poly(vinyl acetate) monolayers due to finite size effects.

The dynamics of poly(vinyl acetate) in toluene solution has been examined by C-13 and proton relaxation. C-13 spin-lattice relaxation time and nuclear Overhauser enhancement measurements were carried out as a function of temperature at 50.3 and 100.6 MHz. The spin-lattice relaxation times for backbone protons were measured at different temperatures at 200 MHz. The relaxation data have been analyzed using the Hall-Weber-Helfand (HWH) model, which describes backbone dynamics in terms of conformational transitions and the Dejean-Laupretre-Monnerie (DLM) model, which includes bond librations in addition to conformational transitions. The parameters obtained from the analysis of C-13 relaxation data were utilized to predict the proton relaxation data. The DLM model was found to be more successful in reproducing the experimental results. To study the influence of libration further, proton relaxation data for poly(vinyl acetate) over a wider range of temperature reported in the literature were analyzed by these two models. The DLM model could reproduce the experimental data at all temperatures whereas the HWH model was found to be successful only in accounting for the experimental data at high temperatures. The results demonstrate the importance of including the librational mode in the description of the backbone dynamics in polymers.

The adsorption of poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) and poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) onto alumina has been studied as a function of pH, both individually and in the presence of each other. The adsorption density of PAA is found to decrease with an increase of pH while that of PVA shows the opposite trend. In a binary system containing PAA and PVA, the presence of PVA does not affect the adsorption of PAA onto alumina, but the addition of PAA diminishes the adsorption of PVA in the pH range investigated. The adsorption isotherm of PAA at acidic pH exhibits high-affinity Langmuirian behavior. The isotherms for PVA appear rounded and are of the low-affinity type, Once again the adsorption isotherms of PAA remain unaltered in the presence of PVA whereas those of PVA are significantly affected resulting in a lowering of the adsorption density consequent to PAA addition. A variation in the sequence of addition of PAA and PVA does not affect the adsorption behavior of either of the polymers, The electrokinetic behavior of alumina with PAA is hardly influenced by the addition of PVA, On the other hand, the electrophoretic mobility of alumina in the presence of PVA is significantly altered in the presence of PAA and closely resembles the trend observed with PAA alone. Desorption studies reveal that over 80% of PVA could be desorbed in the pH range 3-9 whereas in the case of PAA, the percent desorption increases from 20 to about 70% as the pH is increased from about 3 to 8. Solution conductivity tests confirm interaction of aluminum species and PAA in the bulk solution. FTIR spectroscopic data provide evidence in support of hydrogen bonding and chemical interaction in the case of the PAA-alumina system and hydrogen bonding with respect to the PVA-alumina interaction. This paper reports a new class of photo-cross-linkable side chain liquid crystalline polymers (PSCLCPs) based on the bis(benzylidene)cyclohexanone unit, which functions as both a mesogen and a photoactive center. Polymers with the bis(benzylidene)cyclohexanone unit and varying spacer length have been synthesized. Copolymers of bis(benzylidene)cyclohexanone containing monomer and cholesterol benzoate containing monomer with different compositions have also been prepared. All these polymers have been structurally characterized by spectroscopic techniques. Thermal transitions were studied by DSC, and mesophases were identified by polarized light optical microscopy (POM). The intermediate compounds OH-x, the monomers SCLCM-x, and the corresponding polymers PSCLCP-x, which are essentially based on bis(benzylidene)cyclohexanone, all show a nematic mesophase. Transition temperatures were observed to decrease with increasing spacer length. The copolymers with varying compositions exhibit a cholesteric mesophase, and the transition temperatures increase with the cholesteric benzoate units in the copolymer. Photolysis of the low molecular weight liquid crystalline bis(benzylidene)-cyclohexanone compound reveals that there are two kinds of photoreactions in these systems: the EZ photoisomerization and 2 pi + 2 pi addition. The EZ photoisomerization in the LC phase disrupts the parallel stacking of the mesogens, resulting in the transition from the LC phase to the isotropic phase. The photoreaction involving the 2 pi + 2 pi addition of the bis(benzylidene)cyclohexanone units in the polymer results in the cross-linking of the chains. The liquid crystalline induced circular dichroism (LCICD) studies of the cholesterol benzoate copolymers revealed that the cholesteric supramolecular order remains even after the photo-cross-linking.

This is the first report on studies carried out in detail on high-pressure oxygen copolymerization (> 50 psi) of the vinyl monomers styrene and alpha-methylstyrene (AMS). The saturation pressure of oxygen for AMS oxidation, hitherto obscure, is found to be 300 psi. Whereas the ease of oxidation is more favorable for styrene, the rate and yield of polyperoxide formation are higher for AMS. This is explained on the basis of the reactivity of the corresponding alkyl and peroxy radicals. Below 50 degrees C, degradation of the poly(styrene peroxide) formed is about 2.5 times less than that observed above 50 degrees C, so much so that it gives a break in the rate curve, and thereafter the rate is lowered. Normal free radical kinetics is followed before the break point, after which the monomer and initiator exponents become unusually high. This is interpreted on the basis of chain transfer to the degradation products. The low molecular weight of polyperoxides has been attributed to the (i) low reactivity of RO(2)(.) toward the monomer, (ii) chain transfer to degradation products, (iii) facile cleavage of O-O bond, followed by unzipping to nonradical products, and (iv) higher stability of the reinitiating radicals. At lower temperatures, (i) predominates, whereas at higher temperatures, chiefly (ii)-(iv) are the case.

The hydrothermal reaction of Ln(NO3)(3), Ni(NO3)(2), NaN3, and isonicotinic acid (L) yielded two novel 3-D coordination frameworks (1 and 2) of general formula [Ni(2)Ln(L)(5)(N-3)(2)(H2O)(3)] center dot 2H(2)O (Ln = Pr(III) for 1 and Nd(III) for 2), containing Ni-Pr or Ni-Nd hybrid extended three-dimensional networks containing both azido and carboxylate as co-ligands. Both the compounds are found to be isostructural and crystallize in monoclinic system having P2(1)/n space group. Here the lanthanide ions are found to be nonacoordinated. Both bidentate and monodentate modes of binding of the carboxylate with the lanthanides have been observed in the above complexes. Variable temperature magnetic studies of the above two complexes have been investigated in the temperature range 2-300 K which showed dominant antiferromagnetic interaction in both the cases and these experimental results are analyzed with the theoretical models. PbS quantum dots capped with mercaptoethanol (C2H5OSH) have been synthesized in poly vinyl alcohol and used to investigate their photoluminescence (PL) response to various ions such as zinc (Zn), cadmium (Cd), mercury (Hg), silver (Ag), copper (Cu), iron (Fe), manganese (Mn), cobalt (Co), chromium (Cr) and nickel (Ni). The enhancement in the PL intensity was observed with specific ions namely Zn, Cd, Hg and Ag. Among these four ions, the PL response to Hg and Ag even at sub-micro-molar concentrations was quite high, compared to that of Zn and Cd. It was observed that the change in Pb and S molar ratio has profound effect on the sensitivity of these ions. These results indicate that the sensitivity of these QDs could be fine-tuned by controlling the S concentration at the surface. Contrary to the above, Cu quenched the photoluminescence. In Cd based QDs related ion probing, Hg and Cu was found to have quenching properties, however, our PbS QDs have quenching property only for Cu ions. This was attributed to the formation HgS at the surface that has bandgap higher than PbS. Another interesting property of PbS in PVA observed is photo-brightening mechanism due to the curing of the polymer with laser. However, the presence of excess ions at the surface changes its property to photo-darkening/brightening that depends on the direction of carrier transfer mechanism (from QDs to the surface adsorbed metal ions or vice-versa). which is an interesting feature for metal ion detectivity.

This article deals with the kinetics and mechanism of acrylonitrile (AN) polymerization initiated by Cu(II)-4-anilino 3-pentene 2-one[Cu(II)ANIPO], Cu(II)-4-p-toluedeno 3-pentene 2-one [Cu(II)TPO], and Cu(II)-4-p-nitroanilino 3-pentene 2-one [Cu(II)NAPO] in bulk at 60°C. The polymerization is free radical in nature. The exponent of initiator(I) is 0.5. The initiation step is a complex formation between the chelate and monomer and subsequent decomposition of the intermediate complex giving rise to free radical and Cu(I). This is substantiated by ultraviolet (UV) and electron spin resonance (ESR) studies. The activation energies and kinetic and chain transfer constants have also been evaluated.

Evidence of the initiation process during uncatalyzed thermal polymerization of vinyl monomers is presented. DSC studies reveal a prominent endothermic effect just before the polymerization exotherm, which is substantiated by the identification of the free radicals produced in the initiation by a quick quenching technique and subsequent detection by ESR at low temperatures.

The free radical polymerization of acrylonitrile (AN) initiated by Cu(I1) 4-anilino 3-pentene 2-one [Cu(II) ANIPO] Cu(II), 4-p-toluedeno 3-pentene 2-one [Cu(II) TPO], and Cu(I1) 4-p-nitroanilino 3-pentene 2-one [Cu(II) NAPO] was studied in benzene at 50 and 60°C and in carbon tetrachloride (CCld), dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), and methanol (MeOH) at 60°C. Although the polymerization proceeded in a heterogeneous phase, it followed the kinetics of a homogeneous process. The monomer exponents were 22 at two different temperatures and in different solvents. The square-root dependence of R, on initiator concentration and higher monomer exponents accounted for a 1:2 complex formation between the chelate and monomer. The complex formatign was shown by ultraviolet (UV) study. The activation energies, kinetics, and chain transfer constants were also evaluated.

Different strategies for functionalization of the core region and periphery of core-shell type hyperbranched polymers (HBP) using the ``click'' reaction have been explored. For achieving periphera functionalization, an AB(2) + A-R-1 + A-R-2 type copolymerization approach was used, where A-R-1 is heptaethylene glycol monomethyl ether (HPEG-M) and A-R-2 is tetraethylene glycol monopropargyl ether (TEG-P). A very small mole fraction of the propargyl containing monomer, TEG-P, was used to ensure that the water-solubility of the hyperbranched polymer is minimally affected. Similarly, to incorporate propargyl groups in the core region, a new propargyl group bearing B-2-typ monomer was designed and utilized in an AB(2) + A(2) + B-2 + A-R-1 type copolymerization, such that the total mole fraction of B-2 + A(2) is small and their mole-ratio is 1: 1. Further, using a combination of both the above approaches, namely AB(2) + A(2) + B-2 + A-R-1 + A-R-2, hyperbranched structures that incorporate propargyl groups both at theperiphery and within the core were synthesized. Since the AB(2) monomer carries a hexamethylene spacer (C-6) and the periphery is PEGylated all the derivatized polymers form core-shell type structures in aqueous solutions. Attempts were made to ascertain and probe the location of the propargyl groups in these HBP's, by ``clicking'' azidomethylpyrene, onto them. However, the fluorescence spectra of aqueous solutions of the pyrene derivatized polymers were unable to discriminate between the various locations, possibly because the relatively hydrophobic pyrene units insert themselves into the core region to minimize exposure to water.
