The influence of the pedogenic and climatic contexts on the formation and preservation of pedogenic carbonates in a climosequence in the Western Ghats (Karnataka Plateau, South West India) has been studied. Along the climosequence, the current mean annual rainfall (MAR) varies within a 80 km transect from 6000 mm at the edge of the Plateau to 500 mm inland. Pedogenic carbonates occur in the MAR range of 500-1200 mm. In the semi-arid zone (MAR: 500-900 mm), carbonates occur (i) as rhick hardpan calcretes on pediment slopes and (ii) as nodular horizons in polygenic black soils (i.e. vertisols). In the sub-humid zone (MAR: 900-1500 mm), pedogenic carbonates are disseminated in the black soil matrices either as loose, irregular and friable nodules of millimetric size or as indurated botryoidal nodules of centimetric to pluricentimetric size. They also occur at the top layers of the saprolite either as disseminated pluricentimetric indurated nodules or carbonate-cemented lumps of centimetric to decimetric size. Chemical and isotopic (Sr-87/Sr-86) compositions of the carbonate fraction were determined after leaching with 0.25 N HCl. The corresponding residual fractions containing both primary minerals and authigenic clays were digested separately and analyzed. The trend defined by the Sr-87/Sr-86 signatures of both labile carbonate fractions and corresponding residual fractions indicates that a part of the labile carbonate fraction is genetically linked to the local soil composition. Considering the residual fraction of each sample as the most likely lithogenic source of Ca in carbonates, it is estimated that from 24% to 82% (55% on average) of Ca is derived from local bedrock weathering, leading to a consumption of an equivalent proportion of atmospheric CO2. These values indicate that climatic conditions were humid enough to allow silicate weathering: MAR at the time of carbonate formation likely ranged from 400 to 700 mm, which is 2- to 3-fold less than the current MAR at these locations. The Sr, U and Mg contents and the (U-234/U-238) activity ratio in the labile carbonate fraction help to understand the conditions of carbonate formation. The relatively high concentrations of Sr, U and Mg in black soil carbonates may indicate fast growth and accumulation compared to carbonates in saprolite, possibly due to a better confinement of the pore waters which is supported by their high (U-234/U-238) signatures, and/or to higher content of dissolved carbonates in the pore waters. The occurrence of Ce, Mn and Fe oxides in the cracks of carbonate reflects the existence of relatively humid periods after carbonate formation. The carbonate ages determined by the U-Th method range from 1.33 +/- 0.84 kyr to 7.5 +/- 2.7 kyr and to a cluster of five ages around 20 kyr, i.e. the Last Glacial Maximum period. The young occurrences are only located in the black soils, which therefore constitute sensitive environments for trapping and retaining atmospheric CO2 even on short time scales. The maximum age of carbonates depends on their location in the climatic gradient: from about 20 kyr for centimetric nodules at Mule Hole (MAR = 1100 mm/yr) to 200 kyr for the calcrete at Gundlupet (MAR = 700 mm/yr, Durand et al., 2007). The intensity of rainfall during wet periods would indeed control the lifetime of pedogenic carbonates and thus the duration of inorganic carbon storage in soils. (C) 2010 Elsevier Ltd. Let A be a positive definite operator in a Hilbert space and consider the initial value problem for u(t) = -A(2)u. Using a representation of the semigroup exp(-A(2)t) in terms of the group exp(iAt) we express u in terms of the solution of the standard heat equation w(t) = W-yy, with initial values v solving the initial value problem for v(y) = iAv. This representation is used to construct a method for approximating u in terms of approximations of v. In the case that A is a 2(nd) order elliptic operator the method is combined with finite elements in the spatial variable and then reduces the solution of the 4(th) order equation for u to that of the 2(nd) order equation for v, followed by the solution of the heat equation in one space variable.

The correlation dimension D 2 and correlation entropy K 2 are both important quantifiers in nonlinear time series analysis. However, use of D 2 has been more common compared to K 2 as a discriminating measure. One reason for this is that D 2 is a static measure and can be easily evaluated from a time series. However, in many cases, especially those involving coloured noise, K 2 is regarded as a more useful measure. Here we present an efficient algorithmic scheme to compute K 2 directly from a time series data and show that K 2 can be used as a more effective measure compared to D 2 for analysing practical time series involving coloured noise.

Turbulent mixed convection flow and heat transfer in a shallow enclosure with and without partitions and with a series of block-like heat generating components is studied numerically for a range of Reynolds and Grashof numbers with a time-dependent formulation. The flow and temperature distributions are taken to be two-dimensional. Regions with the same velocity and temperature distributions can be identified assuming repeated placement of the blocks and fluid entry and exit openings at regular distances, neglecting the end wall effects. One half of such module is chosen as the computational domain taking into account the symmetry about the vertical centreline. The mixed convection inlet velocity is treated as the sum of forced and natural convection components, with the individual components delineated based on pressure drop across the enclosure. The Reynolds number is based on forced convection velocity. Turbulence computations are performed using the standard k– model and the Launder–Sharma low-Reynolds number k– model. The results show that higher Reynolds numbers tend to create a recirculation region of increasing strength in the core region and that the effect of buoyancy becomes insignificant beyond a Reynolds number of typically 5×105. The Euler number in turbulent flows is higher by about 30 per cent than that in the laminar regime. The dimensionless inlet velocity in pure natural convection varies as Gr1/3. Results are also presented for a number of quantities of interest such as the flow and temperature distributions, Nusselt number, pressure drop and the maximum dimensionless temperature in the block, along with correlations.

Using the dimensional reduction regularization scheme, we show that radiative corrections to the anomaly of the axial current, which is coupled to the gauge field, are absent in a supersymmetric U(1) gauge model for both 't Hooft-Veltman and Bardeen prescriptions for γ5. We also discuss the results with reference to conventional dimensional regularization. This result has significant implications with respect to the renormalizability of supersymmetric models.

Three new procedures - in the context of estimation of virial coefficients and summation of the partial virial series for hard discs and hard spheres - are proposed. They are based on the parametrised Euler transformation, a novel resummation, identity and the ε-convergence methods respectively. A comparison with other estimates (molecular dynamics, graph theory and empirical methods) reveals satisfactory agreement.

It is shown that the Fayet-Illiopoulos D term in N= 1 supersymmetric spontaneously broken U( 1) gauge theories may get one-loop corrections, even when trace U( 1) charges are zero. However, these corrections are only logarithmically divergent and hence do not affect the naturalness of the theory.

In the simple theory of flexure of beams, the slope, bending moment, shearing force, load and other quantities are functions of a derivative of y with respect to x. It is shown that the elastic curve of a transversely loaded beam can be represented by the Maclaurin series. Substitution of the values of the derivatives gives a direct solution of beam problems. In this paper the method is applied to derive the Theorem or three moments and slope deflection equations. The method is extended to the solution of a rigid portal frame. Finally the method is applied to deduce results on which the moment distribution method of analyzing rigid frames is based.

Electrical and magnetic properties of La3Ni2O7 and La4Ni3O10 have been investigated in comparison with those of La2NiO4, LaNiO3, and LaSrNiO4. The results suggest an increasing 3-dimensional character across the homologous series Lan+1NinO3n+1 with increase in n. Accordingly, the electrical resistivity decreases in the order La3Ni2O7, La4Ni3O10, and LaNiO3 and this trend is suggested to be related to the percolation threshold. Magnetic properties of these oxides also show some interesting trends across the series.

We discuss the consistency, unitarity and Lorentz invariance of an anomalous U(1) gauge theory in four dimensions. Our analysis is based on an effective low-energy action valid in the chiral symmetry broken phase. The allegedly bad properties of anomalous theories (except non-renormalizability) are examined. It is shown that, in the low-energy context, the theory can be consistently and unitarily quantised, and is formally Lorentz covariant.

A new series of layered perovskite oxides, AILaNb2O7 (A = Li, Na, K, Rb, Cs, NH4) constituting n = 2 members of the family A A′n−1BnO3n+1, has been prepared. Their structure consists of double perovskite slabs interleaved by A atoms. Hydrated HLaNb2O7 is formed by topotactic proton exchange of the A atoms in ALaNb2O7 (A = K, Rb, Cs). The hydrate readily loses water to give anhydrous HLaNb2O7 which is isostructural with RbLaNb2O7. HLaNb2O7 exhibits Bronsted acidity forming intercalation compounds with bases such as n-octylamine and pyridine.

Time series, from a narrow point of view, is a sequence of observations on a stochastic process made at discrete and equally spaced time intervals. Its future behavior can be predicted by identifying, fitting, and confirming a mathematical model. In this paper, time series analysis is applied to problems concerning runwayinduced vibrations of an aircraft. A simple mathematical model based on this technique is fitted to obtain the impulse response coefficients of an aircraft system considered as a whole for a particular type of operation. Using this model, the output which is the aircraft response can be obtained with lesser computation time for any runway profile as the input.
