Flower-like hierarchical architectures of layered SnS2 have been synthesized ionothermally for the first time, using a water soluble EMIM]BF4 ionic liquid (IL) as the solvent medium. At lower reaction temperatures, the hierarchical structures are formed of few-layered polycrystalline 2D nanosheet-petals composed of randomly oriented nanoparticles of SnS2. The supramolecular networks of the IL serve as templates on which the nanoparticles of SnS2 are glued together by combined effects of hydrogen bonding, electrostatic, hydrophobic and imidazolium stacking interactions of the IL, giving rise to polycrystalline 2D nanosheet-petals. At higher reaction temperatures, single crystalline plate-like nanosheets with well-defined crystallographic facets are obtained due to rapid inter-particle diffusion across the IL. Efficient surface charge screening by the IL favors the aggregation of individual nanosheets to form hierarchical flower-like architectures of SnS2. The mechanistic aspects of the ionothermal bottom-up hierarchical assembly of SnS2 nanosheets are discussed in detail. Li-ion storage properties of the pristine SnS2 samples are examined and the electrochemical performance of the sample synthesized at higher temperatures is found to be comparable to that reported for pristine SnS2 samples in the literature.

The role of homogeneity in ex situ grown conductive coatings and dimensionality in the lithium storage properties of TiO(2) is discussed here. TiO(2) nanotube and nanosheet comprising of mixed crystallographic phases of anatase and TiO(2) (B) have been synthesized by an optimized hydrothermal method. Surface modifications of TiO(2) nanotube are realized via coating the nanotube with Ag nanoparticles and amorphous carbon. The first discharge cycle capacity (at current rate = 10 mA g(-1)) for TiO(2) nanotube and nanosheet were 355 mAh g(-1) and 225 mAhg(-1), respectively. The conductive surface coating stabilized the titania crystallographic structure during lithium insertion-deinsertion processes via reduction in the accessibility of lithium ions to the trapping sites. The irreversible capacity is beneficially minimized from 110 mAh g(-1) for TiO(2) nanotubes to 96 mAh g(-1) and 57 mAhg(-1) respectively for Ag and carbon modified TiO(2) nanotubes. The homogeneously coated amorphous carbon over TiO(2) renders better lithium battery performance than randomly distributed Ag nanoparticles coated TiO(2) due to efficient hopping of electrons. Ce1-xSnxO2 (x = 0.1-0.5) solid solution and its Pd substituted analogue have been prepared by a single step solution combustion method using tin oxalate precursor. The compounds were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and H-2/temperature programmed redution (TPR) studies. The cubic fluorite structure remained intact up to 50% of Sri substitution in CeO2, and the compounds were stable up to 700 C. Oxygen storage capacity of Ce1-xSnxO2 was found to be much higher than that of Ce1-xZrxO2 due to accessible Ce4+/Ce3+ and Sn4+/Sn2+ redox couples at temperatures between 200 and 400 C. Pd 21 ions in Ce0.78Sn0.2Pd0.02O2-delta are highly ionic, and the lattice oxygen of this catalyst is highly labile, leading to low temperature CO to CO2 conversion. The rate of CO oxidation was 2 mu mol g(-1) s(-1) at 50 degrees C. NO reduction by CO with 70% N-2 selectivity was observed at similar to 200 degrees C and 100% N-2 selectivity below 260 degrees C with 1000-5000 ppm NO. Thus, Pd2+ ion substituted Ce1-xSnxO2 is a superior catalyst compared to Pd2+ ions in CeO2, Ce1-xZrxO2, and Ce1-xTixO2 for low temperature exhaust applications due to the involvement of the Sn2+/Sn4+ redox couple along with Pd2+/Pd-0 and Ce4+/Ce3+ couples.

Accelerated ageing studies for three composite propellant formulations, namely polystyrene (PS)/ ammonium perchlorate (AP), polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA)/AP and poly phenol formaldehyde (PPF)/AP have been carried out in the temperature range of 55-125°C. Measurements of the ultimate compression strength (Uc) and isothermal decomposition rate (TD rate) were monitored as a function of storage time and temperature. The change in Uc was found to be linearly dependent on the change in TD rate irrespective of the propellant systems. Analysis of the results further revealed that the cause of ageing for both Uc and burning rate (r) is the thermal decomposition of the propellant. The safe-life for the change in mechanical properties was found to be higher compared to the change in r for PS and PMMA based propellants.

We discuss the inverse problem associated with the propagation of the field autocorrelation of light through a highly scattering object like tissue. In the first part of the work, we reconstructed the optical absorption coefficient mu(u) and particle diffusion coefficient D-B from simulated measurements which are integrals of a quantity computed from the measured intensity and intensity autocorrelation g(2)(tau) at the boundary. In the second part we recover the mean square displacement (MSD) distribution of particles in an inhomogeneous object from the sampled g(2)(tau) measure on the boundary. From the MSD, we compute the storage and loss moduli distributions in the object. We have devised computationally easy methods to construct the sensitivity matrices which are used in the iterative reconstruction algorithms for recovering these parameters from the measurements. The results of the reconstruction of mu(a), D-B, MSD and the viscoelastic parameters, which are presented, show reasonable good position and quantitative accuracy.

The interfacial shear rheological properties of a continuous single-crystalline film of CuS and a 3D particulate gel of CdS nanoparticles (3−5 nm in diameter) formed at toluene−water interfaces have been studied. The ultrathin films (50 nm in thickness) are formed in situ in the shear cell through a reaction at the toluene−water interface between a metal−organic compound in the organic layer and an appropriate reagent for sulfidation in the aqueous layer. Linear viscoelastic spectra of the nanofilms reveal solid-like rheological behavior with the storage modulus higher than the loss modulus over the range of angular frequencies probed. Large strain amplitude sweep measurements on the CdS nanofilms formed at different reactant concentrations suggest that they form a weakly flocculated gel. Under steady shear, the films exhibit a yield stress, followed by a steady shear thinning at high shear rates. The viscoelastic and flow behavior of these films that are in common with those of many 3D “soft” materials like gels, foams, and concentrated colloidal suspensions can be described by the “soft” glassy rheology model.

Vegetable oils are a potential source of base oils for biodegradable lubricants, with limited oxidative stability. This study focuses on the effect of long-term ageing and the influence of oxidation products on the boundary lubrication performance of coconut and soy bean oils, by subjecting them to accelerated ageing in a dark oven at elevated temperature. The samples were collected at regular intervals and analysed for the changes in viscosity, percentage of free fatty acid and peroxide number compared to fresh oil samples. The boundary lubrication properties of these samples were evaluated using a four-ball tester. Increased wear observed with aged oil samples was linked to the destruction of triglyceride structure and formation of peroxides. The difference in the wear properties of soy bean oil to coconut oil was accounted by its high content of unsaturated fatty acids and its susceptibility to undergo oxidation. It was concluded that the coconut oil can perform as a better lubricant and has got a better storage life compared to soy bean oil.

CeO2-SnO2 solid solution has been reported to possess high oxygen storage/release property which possibly originates from local structural distortion. We have performed first-principles based density functional calculations of Ce1-xSnxO2 structure (x=0, 0.25, 0.5, 1) to understand its structural stability in fluorite in comparison to rutile structure of the other end-member SnO2, and studied the local structural distortion induced by the dopant Sn ion. Analysis of relative energies of fluorite and rutile phases of CeO2, SnO2, and Ce1-xSnxO2 indicates that fluorite structure is the most stable for Ce1-xSnxO2 solid solution. An analysis of local structural distortions reflected in phonon dispersion show that SnO2 in fluorite structure is highly unstable while CeO2 in rutile structure is only weakly unstable. Thus, Sn in Ce1-xSnxO2-fluorite structure is associated with high local structural distortion whereas Ce in Ce1-xSnxO2-rutile structure, if formed, will show only marginal local distortion. Determination of M-O (M=Ce or Sn) bond lengths and analysis of Born effective charges for the optimized structure of Ce1-xSnxO2 show that local coordination of these cations changes from ideal eightfold coordination expected of fluorite lattice to 4+4 coordination, leading to generation of long and short Ce-O and Sn-O bonds in the doped structure. Bond valence analyses for all ions show the presence of oxygen with bond valence similar to 1.84. These weakly bonded oxygen ions are relevant for enhanced oxygen storage/release properties observed in Ce1-xSnxO2 solid solution. (C) 2010 American Institute of Physics.

An extracellular xylanase was purified to homogeneity from the culture filtrate of the thermophilic fungus, Humicola lanuginosa (Griffon and Maublanc) Bunce and its properties were studied. A fourfold purification and a yield of 8% were achieved. The molecular-weight of the protein was found to be 22,500 based on electrophoretic mobility and 29,000 by gel filtration behavior. The protein is rich in acidic amino acids, glycine and tyrosine, and poor in sulfur-containing amino acids. The kinetic properties of the enzyme are similar to those of other fungal xylanases. The enzyme shows high affinity toward larchwood xylan (Km = 0.91 mg/ml) and hydrolyzes only xylan. The enzyme becomes inactivated when stored for more than 2 months at −20 °C in the dry state. Such an inactivation has not been reported so far for any xylanase. Using chromatographic techniques, one species of protein differing from the native protein in charge but enzymatically active was isolated in low yields. However, a large molecular-weight species of the protein devoid of enzyme activity was isolated in substantial quantities and further characterized. Based on ultracentrifugation and gel electrophoretic studies, it was concluded that this species may be an aggregate of the native protein and that such an aggregation might be taking place on storage in the dry state at −20 °C, leading to loss in activity.

Hydrogen storage in the three-dimensional carbon foams is analyzed using classical grand canonical Monte Carlo simulations. The calculated storage capacities of the foams meet the material-based DOE targets and are comparable to the capacities of a bundle of well-separated similar diameter open nanotubes. The pore sizes in the foams are optimized for the best hydrogen uptake. The capacity depends sensitively on the C-H-2 interaction potential, and therefore, the results are presented for its ``weak'' and ``strong'' choices, to offer the lower and upper bounds for the expected capacities. Furthermore, quantum effects on the effective C-H-2 as well as H-2-H-2 interaction potentials are considered. We find that the quantum effects noticeably change the adsorption properties of foams and must be accounted for even at room temperature.

Thin films of barium strontium titanate (BST) including BaTiO3 and SrTiO3 end members were deposited using the metallo-organic decomposition (MOD) technique. Processing parameters such as nonstoichiometry, annealing temperature and time, film thickness and doping concentration were correlated with the structural and electrical properties of the films. A random polycrystalline structure was observed for all MOD films under the processing conditions in this study. The microstructures of the films showed multi-grains structure through the film thickness. A dielectric constant of 563 was observed for (Ba0.7Sr0.3)TiO3 films rapid thermal annealed at 750 degrees C for 60 s. The dielectric constant increased with annealing temperature and film thickness, while the dielectric constant could reach the bulk values for thicknesses as thin as similar to 0.3 mu m. Nonstoichiometry and doping in the films resulted in a lowering of the dielectric constant. For near-stoichiometric films, a small dielectric dispersion obeying the Curie-von Schweidler type dielectric response was observed. This behavior may be attributed to the presence of the high density of disordered grain boundaries. All MOD processed films showed trap-distributed space-charge limited conduction (SCLC) behavior with slope of similar to 7.5-10 regardless of the chemistry and processing parameter due to the presence of main boundaries through the film thickness. The grain boundaries masked the effect of donor-doping, so that all films showed distributed-trap SCLC behavior without discrete-traps. Donor-doping could significantly improve the time-dependent dielectric breakdown behavior of BST thin films, mostly likely due to the lower oxygen vacancy concentration resulted from donor-doping. From the results of charge storage density, leakage current and time-dependent dielectric breakdown behavior, BST thin films are found to be promising candidates for 64 and 256Mb ULSI DRAM applications. Abstract | Electrical switching which has applications in areas such as information storage, power control, etc is a scientifically interesting and technologically important phenomenon exhibited by glassy chalcogenide semiconductors. The phase change memories based on electrical switching appear to be the most promising next generation non-volatile memories, due to many attributes which include high endurance in write/read operations, shorter write/read time, high scalability, multi-bit capability, lower cost and a compatibility with complementary metal oxide semiconductor technology.Studies on the electrical switching behavior of chalcogenide glasses help us in identifying newer glasses which could be used for phase change memory applications. In particular, studies on the composition dependence of electrical switching parameters and investigations on the correlation between switching behavior with other material properties are necessary for the selection of proper compositions which make good memory materials. In this review, an attempt has been made to summarize the dependence of the electrical switching behavior of chalcogenide glasses with other material properties such as network topological effects, glass transition & crystallization temperature, activation energy for crystallization, thermal diffusivity, electrical resistivity and others.

This paper deals with preparation of nanocomposites using modified nanoclay (organoclay) and polypropylene (PP), with, and without compatibilizer (m-TMI-g-PP) to study the effects of modified nanoclay and compatibilizer on viscoelastic properties. Nanocomposites were prepared in two steps; compounding of master batch of nanoclay, polypropylene and m-TMI-g-PP in a torque rheometer and blending of this master-batch with polypropylene in a twin-screw extruder in the specific proportions to yield 3-9% nanoclay by weight in the composite. Dynamic Mechanical Analysis (DMA) tests were carried out to investigate the viscoelastic behavior of virgin polypropylene and nanocomposites. The dynamic mechanical properties such as storage modulus (E'), loss modulus (E `') and damping coefficient (tand) of PP and nano-composites were investigated with and without compatibilizer in the temperature range of -40 degrees C to 140 degrees C at a step of 5 degrees C and frequency range of 5 Hz to 100 Hz at a step of 10 Hz. Storage modulus and loss modulus of the nano-composites was significantly higher than virgin polypropylene throughout the temperature range. Storage modulus of the composites increased continuously with increasing nano-content from 3% to 9%. Composites prepared with compatibilizer exhibited inferior storage modulus than the composites without compatibilizer. Surface morphology such as dispersion of nanoclay in the composites with and without compatibilizer was analyzed through Atomic Force Microscope (AFM) that explained the differences in viscoelastic behavior of composites. In this paper, we report a synthesis, characterization and electrochemical properties of V2O5 nanobelts. V2O5 nanobelts have been prepared via hydrothermal treatment of commercial V2O5 in acidic (HCl/H2SO4) medium at relatively low temperature (160 degrees C). The hydrothermally derived products have been characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), Raman spectroscopy, X-ray photo electron spectroscopy (XPS), UV-Vis spectroscopy, Scanning/Transmission electron microscopy (SEM/TEM). XRD pattern of V2O5 nanobelts show an orthorhombic phase. From the FTIR spectrum, the peak observed at 1018 cm-1 is characteristic of the stretching vibration mode of the terminal vanadyl, V = O. The UV-Vis absorption spectrum of V2O5 nanobelts show maximum absorbance at 430 nm, which was blue-shifted compared to that of bulk V2O5. TEM micrographs reveal that the products consist of nanobelts of 40-200 nm in thickness and several tens of micrometers in length. The electrochemical analysis shows an initial discharge capacity of 360 mAh g-1 and its almost stabilized capacity is reached to 250 mAh g-1 after 55 cycles. A probable reaction mechanism for the formation of orthorhombic V2O5 nanobelts is proposed.

In the present work, Co1-xMnxFe2O4 nanoparticles were synthesized by the low-temperature auto-combustion method. The thermal decomposition process was investigated by means of differential and thermal gravimetric analysis (TG-DTA) that showed the precursor yield the final product above 450 degrees C. The phase purity and crystal lattice symmetry were estimated from X-ray diffraction (XRD). Microstructural features observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) demonstrates that the fine clustered particles were formed with an increase in average grain size with Mn2+ content. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) study confirms the formation of spinel ferrite. Room temperature magnetization measurements showed that the magnetization M-s increases from 29 to 60 emu/g and H-c increases from 13 to 28 Oe with increase in Mn2+ content, which implies that these materials may be applicable for magnetic data storage and recording media.
