Copper(II) complexes of quaternised poly(4-vinylpyridine) (PVP) of different degrees of quaternisation and copper content have been prepared by crosslinking the polymer with 1,2-dibromoethane in the presence of Cu2+ ion as template. The stability constant of the PVP---Cu(II) complexes is found to increase with the degree of crosslinking quaternisation of the resin, but the rate at which Cu2+ is adsorbed by the resin decreases. An optimum combination of both stability and rate can be achieved with a moderate degree (31%) of crosslinking. A kinetic study reveals that quaternisation increases significantly the catalytic activity of the complex for the oxidation of S2O2−3 by O2 compared with PVP----Cu(II) without quaternisation, but it deactivates the complex for the oxidation of both S3O2−6 and S4O2−6. The batch reactor oxidation kinetics at pH 2.16, where the rate is observed to be maximum, is well explained by the Langmuir—Hinshelwood model assuming the coordination of both O2 and thioanion to Cu(II) as a precursor to the oxidation reaction.

The oxidation of aqueous sulfur dioxide in the presence of polymer-supported copper(II) catalyst is also accompanied by homogeneous oxidation of aqueous sulfur dioxide catalyzed by leached copper(II) ions. Aqueous phase oxidation of sulfur dioxide of low concentrations by oxygen in the presence of dissolved copper(II) has therefore been studied. The solubility of SO2 in aqueous solutions is not affected by the concentration of copper(II) in the solution. In the oxidation reaction, only HSO3- is the reactive S(IV) species. Based on this observation a rate model which also incorporates the effect of sulfuric acid on the solubility of SO2 is developed. The rate model includes a power-law type term for the rate of homogeneous phase reaction obtained from a proposed free-radical chain mechanism for the oxidation. Experiments are conducted at various levels of concentrations of SO2 and O-2 in the gas phase and Cu(II) in the liquid phase. The observed orders are one in each of O-2, Cu(II) and HSO3-. This suggests a first-order termination of the free radicals of bisulfite ions.

The usefulness of dioxomolybdenum reagents in oxo-transfer reactions have been reviewed. The redox ability of dioxomolybdenum reagent has been utilized in designing several synthetic methods, which are useful in organic synthesis. Several reactions such as oxidation of alcohols, sulfides, amines, azides olefins etc are accomplished by using dioxomolybdenum reagents. Similarly, it is also demonstrated that dioxomolybdenum complex is useful in performing reduction of aldehydes, ketones, esters, azides etc. A fine tuning of reaction conditions provides suitable conditions to perform either oxidation or reduction by using catalytic amount of reagents. The oxidation reactions are further simplified by employing the polymer supported molybdenum reagents.

Combustion synthesized (CS) cobalt catalysts deposited over two supports, alumina and silica doped alumina (SDA), were characterized and tested for its Fischer-Tropsch (FT) activity. The properties of CS catalysts were compared to catalysts synthesized by conventional impregnation method (IWI). The CS catalysts resulted in 40-70% increase in the yield of C6+ hydrocarbons compared to MI catalysts. The FT activity for CS catalysts showed formation of long chain hydrocarbon waxes (C24+) compared to the formation of middle distillates (C-10-C-20) for IWI synthesized catalysts, indicating higher hydrocarbon chain growth probability for CS catalysts. This is ascribed to the smaller crystallite sizes, increased degree of cobalt reduction and consequentially, a higher number of active metal sites, exposed over the catalyst surface. Additionally, 12-13% increase in the overall C6+ hydrocarbon yield is realized for SDA-CS catalysts, compared to Al2O3-CS catalysts. The improved performance of CS-SDA catalysts is attributed to 48% increase in cobalt dispersion compared to Al2O3 supported CS catalysts, which is again caused by the decrease in the cobalt -support interaction for SDA supports. The metal support interactions were analyzed using XPS and H-2 TPR-TPD experiments. Combustion method produced catalysts with smaller crystallite size (17-18 nm), higher degree of reduction (similar to 92%) and higher metal dispersion (16.1%) compared to the IWI method. Despite its enhanced properties, the CS catalysts require prominently higher reduction temperatures (similar to 1100-1200 K). The hydrocarbon product analysis for Al2O3 supported catalyst showed higher paraffin wax concentrations compared to SDA supported catalysts, due to the lower surface basicity of Al2O3. This work reveals the impact of the CS catalysts and the nature of support on FT activity and hydrocarbon product spectrum. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

In situ polymerization of 3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene with sol-gel-derived mesoporous carbon (MC) leading to a new composite and its subsequent impregnation with Pt nanoparticles for application in polymer electrolyte fuel cells (PEFCs) is reported. The composite exhibits good dispersion and utilization of platinum nanoparticles akin to other commonly used microporous carbon materials, such as carbon black. Pt-supported MC-poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) composite also exhibits promising electrocatalytic activity toward oxygen reduction reaction, which is central to PEFCs. The PEFC with Pt-loaded MC-PEDOT support exhibits 75% of enhancement in its power density in relation to the PEFC with Pt-loaded pristine MC support while operating under identical conditions. It is conjectured that Pt-supported MC-PEDOT composite ameliorates PEFC performance/durability on repetitive potential cycling. (C) 2010 The Electrochemical Society. As Polymer Electrolyte Fuel Cells (PEFCs) are nearing the acceptable performance level for automotive and stationary applications, the focus on the research is shifting more and more toward enhancing their durability that still remains a major concern in their commercial acceptability. Hydrous ruthenium oxide (RuO2) is a promising material for pseudocapacitors due to its high stability, high specific-capacitance and rapid faradaic-reaction. Incorporation of carbon-supported RuO2 (RuO2/C) to platinum (Pt) is found to ameliorate both stability and catalytic activity of fuel cell cathodes that exhibit higher performance and durability in relation to Pt/C cathodes as evidenced by cell polarization, impedance and cyclic voltammetry data. The degradation in performance of Pt-RuO2/C cathodes is found to be only similar to 8% after 10000 accelerated stress test (AST) cycles as against similar to 60% for Pt/C cathodes after 7000 AST cycles under similar conditions. These data are in conformity with the Electrochemical Surface Area and impedance results. Interestingly, Pt-RuO2/C cathodes can withstand more than 10000 AST cycles with only a nominal loss in their performance. Studies on catalytic electrodes with X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy and cross-sectional field-emission scanning electron microscopy reflect that incorporation of RuO2 to Pt helps mitigating aggregation of Pt particles and improves its stability during long-term operation of PEFCs. Novel self-supported natural and synthetic polymer membranes of chitosan-hydroxy ethyl Cellulose-montmorillonite (CS-HEC-MMT) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)-polystyrene sulfonic acid (PSSA) are prepared by solution casting method followed by crosslinking. These membranes are employed for air humidification at varying temperatures between 30 degrees C and 70 degrees C and their performances are compared with commercial Nafion membranes. High hater fluxes with desired humidified-air output have been achieved for CS-HEC-MMT and PVA-PSSA hybrid membranes at air-flow rates of 1-10 slpm. Variation in the air/water mixing ratio, dew point, and relative humidity that ultimately results in desired water flux With respect to air-flow rates are also quantified for all the membranes. Water flux values for CS-HEC-MMT are less than those for Nafion (R) and PVA-PSSA membranes, but the operational Stability of CS-HEC-MMT membrane is higher than PVA-PSSA and comparable with Nafion (R) both of which can operate up to 70 degrees C at repetitive cycles of humidification.

Carbon-supported Pt-TiO2 (Pt-TiO2/C) catalysts with varying at. wt ratios of Pt to Ti, namely, 1:1, 2:1, and 3:1, are prepared by the sol-gel method. The electrocatalytic activity of the catalysts toward oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), both in the presence and absence of methanol, is evaluated for application in direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs). The optimum at. wt ratio of Pt to Ti in Pt-TiO2/C is established by fuel cell polarization, linear sweep voltammetry, and cyclic voltammetry studies. Pt-TiO2/C heattreated at 750 degrees C with Pt and Ti in an at. wt ratio of 2:1 shows enhanced methanol tolerance, while maintaining high catalytic activity toward ORR. The DMFC with a Pt-TiO2/C cathode catalyst exhibits an enhanced peak power density of 180 mW/cm(2) in contrast to the 80 mW/cm(2) achieved from the DMFC with carbon-supported Pt catalyst while operating under identical conditions. Complementary data on the influence of TiO2 on the crystallinity of Pt, surface morphology, and particle size, surface oxidation states of individual constituents, and bulk and surface compositions are also obtained by powder X-ray diffraction, scanning and transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, energy dispersive analysis by X-ray, and inductively coupled plasm optical emission spectrometry.

A Pt-Au alloy catalyst of varying compositions is prepared by codeposition of Pt and Au nanoparticles onto a carbon support to evaluate its electrocatalytic activity toward an oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) with methanol tolerance in direct methanol fuel cells. The optimum atomic weight ratio of Pt to Au in the carbon-supported Pt-Au alloy (Pt-Au/C) as established by cell polarization, linear-sweep voltammetry (LSV), and cyclic voltammetry (CV) studies is determined to be 2:1. A direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC) comprising a carbon-supported Pt-Au (2:1) alloy as the cathode catalyst delivers a peak power density of 120 mW/cm2 at 70 °C in contrast to the peak power density value of 80 mW/cm2 delivered by the DMFC with carbon-supported Pt catalyst operating under identical conditions. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations on a small model cluster reflect electron transfer from Pt to Au within the alloy to be responsible for the synergistic promotion of the oxygen-reduction reaction on a Pt-Au electrode.

Carbon-supported Pt-TiO2 (Pt-TiO2/C) catalyst with varying atomic ratio of Pt to Ti, namely, 1: 1, 2: 1, and 3: 1, is prepared by sol-gel method and its electrocatalytic activity toward oxygen-reduction reaction (ORR) is evaluated for the application in polymer electrolyte fuel cells (PEFCs). The optimum atomic ratio of Pt to Ti in Pt-TiO2/C and annealing temperature are established by cyclic voltammetry and fuel-cell-polarization studies. Pt-TiO2/C annealed at 750 degrees C with Pt and Ti in atomic ratio of 2: 1, namely, 750 Pt-TiO2/C (2: 1), shows enhanced electrocatalytic activity toward ORR. It is found that the incorporation of TiO2 with Pt ameliorates both electrocatalytic activity and stability of cathode in relation to pristine Pt cathode, currently being used in PEFCs. A power density of 0.75 W/cm(2) is achieved at 0.6 V for the PEFC with 750 Pt-TiO2/C (2: 1) as compared with 0.62 W/cm(2) at 0.6 V achieved with the PEFC comprising Pt/C as cathode catalyst while operating under identical conditions. Interestingly, carbon-supported Pt-TiO2 cathode exhibits only 6% loss in electrochemical surface area after 5000 potential cycles while it is as high as 25% for Pt/C. DOI: 10.1115/1.4002466]

Design and operational details for a self-supported polymer electrolyte fuel cell (PEFC) system with anodic dead-end fuel supply and internally humidified cathodic oxidant flow are described. During the PEFC operation, nitrogen and water back diffuse across the Nafion membrane from the cathode to the anode and accumulate in the anode flow channels affecting stack performance. The accumulated inert species are flushed from the stack by purging the fuel cell stack with a timer-activated purge valve to address the aforesaid problem. To minimize the system complexity, stack is designed in such a way that all the inert species accumulate in only one cell called the purge cell. A pulsed purge sequence comprises opening the valve for purge duration followed by purge-valve closing for the hold period and repeating the sequence in cycles. Since self-humidification is inadequate to keep the membrane wet, the anodic dead-end-operated PEFC stack with composite membrane comprising perflourosulphonic acid (Nafion) and silica is employed for keeping the membrane humidified even while operating the stack with dry hydrogen and internally humidified air.

The superior catalytic activity along with improved CO tolerance for formic acid electro-oxidation has been demonstrated on a NiO-decorated reduced graphene oxide (rGO) catalyst. The cyclic voltammetry response of rGO-NiO/Pt catalyst elucidates improved CO tolerance and follows direct oxidation pathway. It is probably due to the beneficial effect of residual oxygen groups on rGO support which is supported by FT-IR spectrum. A strong interaction of rGO support with NiO nanoparticles facilitates the removal of CO from the catalyst surface. The chronoamperometric response indicates a higher catalytic activity and stability of rGO-NiO/Pt catalyst than the NiO/Pt and unmodified Pt electrode catalyst for a prolonged time of continuous oxidation of formic acid. Wilkinson complex, insolubilized by anchoring to polymeric Amberlite beads, had been used for the liquid-phase catalytic oxidation of styrene to benzaldehyde and formaldehyde in toluene medium. Styrene conversion was followed by measuring the oxygen volume in contact with the reaction mixture in a specially designed closed batch apparatus. Styrene conversion depended upon catalyst loading and distribution inside the porous beads, while temperature had little effect on it. The internal diffusional effects on the conversion process have been taken into consideration by a mathematical model which allowed calculation of effectiveness factors for various catalyst loadings and corresponding catalyst distributions. The influence of external diffusion was separately determined by plotting initial rate versus catalyst loading. The proposed method can be readily extended to immobilized enzymes in porous matrices.
