Oxidation of representative halophenols and halonaphthols by peroxidisulphate has been examined. The influence of metallic ions, viz. Cu2+, Fe3+, Ag+, on the above reaction has been studied. Cu2+ ion-catalyzed oxidation gives halo-1, 4-quinones in excellent yield. Potassium bis(biureto)cuprate(III) complex also oxidises halophenols to halo-1, 4-quinones.

One of the desired properties for any new biomaterial composition is its long-term stability in a suitable animal model and such property cannot be appropriately assessed by performing short-term implantation studies. While hydroxyapatite (HA) or bioglass coated metallic biomaterials are being investigated for in vivo biocompatibility properties, such study is not extensively being pursued for bulk glass ceramics. In view of their inherent brittle nature, the implant stability as well as impact of long-term release of metallic ions on bone regeneration have been a major concern. In this perspective, the present article reports the results of the in vivo implantation experiments carried out using 100% strontium (Sr)-substituted glass ceramics with the nominal composition of 4.5 SiO2-3Al(2)O(3)-1.5P(2)O(5)-3SrO-2SrF(2) for 26 weeks in cylindrical bone defects in rabbit model. The combination of histological and micro-computed tomography analysis provided a qualitative and quantitative understanding of the bone regeneration around the glass ceramic implants in comparison to the highly bioactive HA bioglass implants (control). The sequential polychrome labeling of bone during in vivo osseointegration using three fluorochromes followed by fluorescence microscopy observation confirmed homogeneous bone formation around the test implants. The results of the present study unequivocally confirm the long-term implant stability as well as osteoconductive property of 100% Sr-substituted glass ceramics, which is comparable to that of a known bioactive implant, that is, HA-based bioglass. With a view to understand the oxidation states of metal ions involved in oxide superconductors, oxidation behavior of Cu, Pb, and Bi metals have been studiedi employing x-ray-photoemission and ultraviolet-photoemission spectroscopy. Pb and Bi have distinct 6p (0 to 4 eV) and 6s (7.5 to 10 eV) bands and upon oxidation, only the 6p electrons are ionized forming PbO and Bi2O3 with the simultaneous development of the O2-(2p) band (3 to 7 eV). We show that the 6s band of metals lies below the O2-(2p) band, and hence 6s electrons cannot be ionized to form Pb4+ and Bi4+ as expected in PbO2, BaPbO3, BaBiO3, and BaPb0.75Bi0.25O3. Instead these oxides are stabilized with lower valent O22- along with O2- ions with metals remaining in +2 and +3 states. Similarly, it is shown that the Cu2+(3d) band overlaps with the O2-(2p) band in the YBa2Cu3O6.95 completely and the excess oxygen can be stabilized through lower valent oxide ions instead of Cu3+.

A simple and efficient method for spontaneous organization of long assemblies of gold nanoparticles is described. This is achieved in a molten solvent containing acetamide, urea and ammonium nitrate that acts as a solvent cum stabilizer. There is no external aggregating agent or stabilizing agent added to the system. Depending on the concentration of the metal salt in the ternary melt, either chain-like assemblies or individual nanoparticles could be obtained. The amine groups present in the components of the melt (acetamide and urea) help in the stabilization of nanoparticles. Ammonium ions present in the eutectic mixture are likely to assist in the organization of the particles. The method is simple, highly reproducible and does not require any templating agent for the formation of chain-like assemblies.

The possible role of double valence fluctuation in both lead and oxide ions with reference to metallization in oxides of lead is examined by x-ray-photoemission spectroscopy, ultraviolet-photoemission spectroscopy (UPS), and 207Pb NMR studies. The double valence fluctuations may be viewed as Pb4++2O2-⇄Pb2+O22-. While the insulating oxides PbO, Pb3O4, and Sr2PbO4 show a single oxide ion, O2- characterized by O(1s) at 529.7 eV, the insulating peroxide BaO2 is characterized by the ion O22- with a single O(1s) at 533 eV. The metallic PbO2, BaPbO3, BaBiPbO3, and SrPbO3 showed the occurrence of both O2- and O22- ions. The valence band in these compounds has also been studied by UPS, and clear evidence for the coexistence of O2- and O22- is seen in PbO2. A simultaneous study of 207Pb NMR suggests that the Pb ion could also exist in mixed-valence states. Qualitative arguments are presented to rationalize the existence of such mixed valences of the anion in metal oxides in general and their role in superconductivity.

Nanoindentation experiments were conducted on a Ni+ ion-irradiated Zr-based bulk metallic glass (BMG). The irradiation was carried out using 2.5, 5, 10 and 15 MeV ions and a flux of similar to 10(16) ions/cm(2). Post mortem imaging of the indents reveals a transition in the deformation mechanism of the irradiated regions from heterogeneous shear banding to homogeneous flow. Additionally, the load-displacement curves exhibit a transition from serrated to continuous flow with increasing severity of irradiation damage. The stress-strain response obtained from micro-pillar compression experiments complements the indentation response exhibiting a decrease in the flow stress and an `apparent' strain hardening at the lowest irradiation damage investigated, which is not observed in the as-cast alloy. The EPR spectra of microwave-prepared 70NaPO(3):30PbO glasses containing different weight percentages of manganese ions have been studied. The EPR spectra exhibit a well-resolved hyperfine pattern at g(eff) approximate to 2.0. Optical absorption, fluorescent emission and excitation spectra of the glasses have been examined. The absorption spectrum exhibits a peak near 500 nm and this has been attributed to the spin-allowed E-5(g) --> T-5(2g) transition of Mn3+ ions. The emission spectrum shows a band at 595 nm which has been assigned to the T-4(1g)(G) --> (6)A(1g)(S) spin-forbidden transition of Mn2+ ions in octahedral coordination. Concentration quenching of fluorescence was found to occur above 0.75 wt% of Mn2+ ions. The excitation spectra exhibit four bands characteristic of Mn2+ ions in octahedral coordination. From the observed band positions of the excitation spectra, the crystal field parameter D-q and the Racah interelectronic repulsion parameters, B and C have been calculated. A structural model is proposed based on the IR, Raman and MASNMR studies according to which Mn2+ ions are likely to occupy sites similar to Na+ ions in these glasses.

Transition-metal oxides at the metal-insulator boundary, especially those belonging to the perovskite family, exhibit fascinating phenomena such as insulator-metal transitions controlled by composition, high-temperature superconductivity and giant magnetoresistance (GMR), Interestingly, many of these marginally metallic oxides obey the established criteria for metallicity and have a finite density of states at the Fermi;level. The perovskite manganates exhibiting GMR, on the other hand, are unusual in that they possess very high resistivities in the 'metallic' state and show no significant density of states at the Fermi level, Marginal metallicity in oxide systems is a problem of great complexity and contemporary interest and its understanding is of crucial significance to the diverse phenomena exhibited by these materials.

Uniaxial compression experiments on 0.3, 1 and 3 mu m diameter micropillars of a Zr-based bulk metallic glass in as-cast, shot-peened and structurally relaxed conditions were conducted. Shear band formation and stable propagation is observed to be the plastic deformation mode in all cases, with no detectable difference in yield strength according to either size or condition. The limitations of uniaxial compression tests in assessing the influence of various material conditions on plasticity, when it is inhomogeneous in nature, are illustrated.

The technique of friction stir welding (FSW) puts effective use frictional heat for the purpose of joining metallic materials. In this research article, we present and discuss an experimental method to determine the coefficient of friction during FSW. The experiments were conducted to study the interaction between the FSW tool (a die steel) and the base metal (a high strength aluminum alloy) at various contact pressures (13MPa, 26MPa, and 39MPa) and rotation speeds (200rpm, 600rpm, 1000rpm, and 1400rpm). The experimental results, the microstructure, and the process temperature reveal the experimental setup to be capable of simulating the conditions during FSW. The coefficient of friction was found to vary from 0.15 to 1.4, and the temperature increased to as high as 450C. The coefficient of friction was found to increase with temperature. There exists a critical temperature at which point a steep increase in the coefficient of friction was observed. The critical temperature decreases from 250C at a contact pressure of 26MPa to 200C at contact pressure of 34MPa. Below the critical temperature at a specific contact pressure the maximum coefficient of friction is 0.6, and above the critical temperature it reaches a value as high as 1.4. The steep increase in the coefficient of friction is found to be due to the seizure phenomenon and the contact condition during FSW between the tool and the workpiece (base metal) is found to be sticking.

The effect of Surface lipopolysaccharides (LPS) on the electrophoretic softness and fixed charge density in the ion-penetrable layer of Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans cells grown in presence of copper or arsenic ions have been discussed, The electrophoretic mobility data were analyzed using the soft-particle electrophoresis theory. Cell surface potentials of all the strains based on soft-particle theory were lower than those estimated using the conventional Smoluchowski theory, Exposure to metal ions increased the Surface electrophoretic softness with decrease in the fixed charge density. Effect of cell surface lipopolysaccharides on the model parameters are investigated and discussed.

Sr2FeMoO6 oxides exhibit a half-metallic ferromagnetic (HM-FM) ground state and peculiar magnetic and magnetotransport properties, which are interesting for applications in the emerging field of spintronics and attractive for fundamental research in the field of heavily correlated electron systems. Sr2FeWO6 is an insulator with an antiferromagnetic (I-AFM) ground state. The solid solutions Sr2FeMoxW1-xO6 also have peculiar properties-W doping enhances chemical order which allows stabilization of the HM-FM state; as the W content exceeds a certain value a metal to insulator transition (MIT) occurs. The role of W in determining the physical properties of Sr2FeMoxW1-xO6 systems has been a matter of intense investigation. This work deals with the problem of the structural and electronic changes related to the MIT from a local perspective by means of x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS). This technique allows one to probe in detail the local structure and electronic modifications around selected absorber ions (W, Mo, Fe and Sr in our case). The results of XAS analysis in the whole composition range (0 <= x <= 1), in the near edge (XANES) and extended (EXAFS) regions, demonstrate an abrupt change of the local structure around the Fe and Mo sites at the critical composition, x(c). This change represents the microstructural counterpart associated with the MIT. Conversely, the local structure and electronic configuration of W ions remain unaltered in the whole composition range, suggesting indirect participation of W in the MIT.

The composition-controlled metal-insulator transition in the perovskite systems LaNi1-xMxO3 (M = Cr, Mn, Fe, and Co) has been investigated by transport measurements over the temperature range 12-300 K. These systems, which have critical electron densities (nc) in the range (1-2) -1020 electrons cm-3, exhibit sharp metal-insulator transitions at the base temperature. The corresponding minimum metallic conductivity (Ï-min), separating the localized and itinerant electronic regimes, is of the order of 102 ohm-1 cm-1. Particular attention is paid to the idea of Ï-min scaling with nc, and our present results are compared with earlier studies of the metal-insulator transition in low (e.g., Ge:Sb) and high (e.g., metal-ammonia, supercritical Hg) electron-density systems. A link is established between the transport and magnetic properties of the title systems at the metal-insulator transition.

Results of temperature dependence of EPR spectra of Mn2+ and Cu2+ ions doped calcium cadmium acetate hexahydrate (CaCd(CH3COO)4•6H2O) have been reported. The investigation has been carried out in the temperature range between room temperature ( 300 K) and liquid nitrogen temperature. A I-order phase transition at 146 ± 0.5 K has been confirmed. In addition a new II-order phase transition at 128 ± 1 K has been detected for the first time. There is evidence of large amplitude hindered rotations of CH3 groups which become frozen at 128 K. The incorporation of Cu2+ and Mn2+ probes at Ca2+ and Cd2+ sites respectively provide evidence that the phase transitions are caused by the molecular rearrangements of the common coordinating acetate groups between Ca2+ and Cd2+ sites. In contradiction to the previous reports of a change of symmetry from tetragonal to orthorhombic below 140 K, the symmetry of the host is concluded to remain tetragonal in all the three observed phases between room temperature and liquid nitrogen temperature.
