Two inorganic-organic hybrid framework iron phosphate-oxalates, I, [N2C4H12](0.5)[Fe-2(HPO4)(C2O4)(1.5)] and II, [Fe-2(OH2)PO4(C2O4)(0.5)] have been synthesized by hydrothermal means and the structures determined by X-ray crystallography. Crystal Data: compound I, monoclinic, spacegroup = P2(1)/c (No. 14), a=7.569(2) Angstrom, b=7.821(2) Angstrom, c=18.033(4) Angstrom, beta=98.8(1)degrees, V=1055.0(4) Angstrom(3), Z=4, M=382.8, D-calc=2.41 g cm(-3) MoK alpha, R-F=0.02; compound II, monoclinic, spacegroup=P2(1)/c (No. 14), a=10.240(1) b=6.375(3) Angstrom, 9.955(1) Angstrom, beta=117.3(1)degrees, V=577.4(1) Angstrom(3), Z=4, M=268.7, D-calc=3.09 g cm(-3) MoK alpha, R-F=0.03. These materials contain a high proportion of three-coordinated oxygens and [Fe2O9] dimeric units, besides other interesting structural features. The connectivity of Fe2O9 is entirely different in the two materials resulting in the formation of a continuous chain of Fe-O-Fe in II. The phosphate-oxalate containing the amine, I, forms well-defined channels. Magnetic susceptibility measurements show Fen to be in the high-spin state (t(2g)(4)e(g)(2)) in II, and in the intermediate-spin state (t(2g)(5)e(g)(1)) in I.

Coordination compounds of the polypyridines, 2,2 ' -bipyridine (bipy) and 1,10-penanthroline (phen) have offered renewed interest on account of their manifold applications and from the point of view of understanding their structure-reactivity relationships.1 Iron(II) reacts with them to form tris-complexes possessing spin-paired ground states. Cyanide ion greatly enhances the rate of displacement of bipy or phen to form the Schilt class of compounds. Fe(bipy)2(CN)2 and Fe(phen)2(CN)2. They display varying colours in solution depending upon the nature of the solvent and react reversibly with acids to form diprotonated species.2 Magnetic circular dichroism studies have been reported to describe their lowest electronic excitation.

Ferrous and ferric complexes of 2,4-dithiobiuret (Dtb) of the type Fe(Dtb)m Xn where m, n = 1-3, and X = CI–, Br–, I– and SO 4 2– , and a neutral Fe(Dtb-H)2 complex have been synthesized and characterised by elemental analyses, magnetic susceptibility, i.r., electronic and Mössbauer spectroscopic studies. From its i.r. spectrum Dtb was found to act as a S,S-coordinating bidentate chelate. The magnetic moment, electronic and Massbauer spectra are consistent with a low spin distorted octahedral structure for the ferric complexes and a high spin form for ferrous complexes.

Several iron(II, III) complexes of N, N'-di(2-)pyridyl thiourea have been synthesized. The preparation of the complexes from iron(III) salts proceeds through a reduction of iron(III) to iron(II) followed by a subsequent reoxidation. The Moumlssbauer, electronic and infrared spectra of these complexes have been measured. The results are concordant with the coordination of pyridine nitrogens and thiocarbonyl sulfur yielding polymeric complexes. A variable temperature NMR study of the free ligand shows that two conformation are accessible for it in solution at subambient temperatures.

Mössbauer-effect and X-ray studies were carried out on the product samples of the thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and of the isothermal decomposition of iron(II) oxalate in flowing H2. Two types of sample configurations were employed for isothermal studies between 280 to 420°C for various periods of heating. Low temperature Mossbauer measurements at liquid nitrogen temperature were carried out to examine the superparamagnetic (SPM) contributions. From the spectra of samples decomposed at 340°C, in vertical experiments, the percentage SPM and percentage ferromagnetic (FM) area of Fe3O4 were estimated and an average size (˜167Å) for Fe3O4 was derived. Mossbauer measurements (at high temperatures) were carried out on Fe3C formed in horizontal experiments, for two samples decomposed at ˜320°C for 1 hr and 2 hr. An estimate of SPM and FM Fe3C was obtained by calculating KV, the anisotropy energy for the Fe3C in these two samples and values of 5.07 × 10−16 and 7.02 × 10−16 erg/sec, respectively, were obtained.

Iron(II) complexes of 1-phenyl-2,3-dimethyl-5-pyrazolone (antipyrine, Apy) and pyridine N-oxide (PyO), having the formulae [Fe(Apy)6](ClO4)2, Fe(Apy)2Cl2, Fe(Apy)2Br2, Fe(Apy)4I2, [Fe(PyO)3Cl3]2 . 2H2O, [Fe(PyO)Cl2 . 2H2O]2, [Fe(PyO)3Br2]2 and [Fe(PyO)6]I2 have been prepared and characterized. [Fe(Apy)6](ClO4)2 in nitrobenzene and [Fe(PyO)6]I2 in acetonitrile behave as 1:2 electrolytes; Fe(Apy)4I2 shows considerable dissociation while Fe(Apy)2Cl2 and Fe(Apy)2Br2 are non-electrolytes and monomeric in nitrobenzene. [Fe(PyO)3Cl2]2 . 2H2O and [Fe(PyO)3Br2]2 in nitrobenzene and [Fe(PyO)Cl2 . 2H2O]2 in acetonitrile behave as non-electrolytes. All the complexes are spin-free. The i.r. spectra show that the oxygens of the CO and NO groups are the donors in the Apy and PyO complexes. A large decrease in the NO stretching frequency in [Fe(PyO)Cl2. 2H2O]2 suggests PyO acts as a bridge forming a binuclear complex. The chloro and the bromo complexes of Apy have been assigned pseudo tetrahedral structures while the rest of the complexes have octahedral or near octahedral configurations around the iron(II) on the basis of the magnetic moments and the electronic transitions.

Iron(II) complexes Fe(L)(2)](2+) as perchlorate (1-3) and chloride (1a-3a) salts, where L is 4'-phenyl-2,2':6',2 `'-terpyridine (phtpy in 1, 1a), 4'-(9-anthracenyl)-2,2':6',2 `'-terpyridine (antpy in 2, 2a) and 4'-(1-pyrenyl)-2,2':6',2 `'-terpyridine (pytpy in 3, 3a), were prepared and their photocytotoxicity studied. The diamagnetic complexes 1-3 having an FeN6 core showed an Fe(III)-Fe(II) redox couple near 1.0 V vs. saturated calomel electrode in MeCN-0.1 M tetrabutylammonium perchlorate. Complexes 2 and 3, in addition, displayed a quasi-reversible ligand-based redox process near 0.0 V. The redox and spectral properties are rationalized from the theoretical studies. The complexes bind to DNA in a partial intercalative mode. The pytpy complex efficiently photo-cleaves DNA in green light via superoxide and hydroxyl radical formation. The antpy and pytpy complexes exhibited a remarkable photocytotoxic effect in HeLa cancer cells (IC50, similar to 9 mu M) in visible light (400-700 nm), while remaining essentially nontoxic in dark (IC50, similar to 90 mu M). Formation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) inside the HeLa cells was evidenced from the fluorescence enhancement of dichlorofluorescein upon treatment with the pytpy complex followed by photo-exposure. The antpy and pytpy complexes were used for cellular imaging. Confocal imaging and dual staining study using propidium iodide (PI) showed nuclear localization of the complexes. (c) 2012 Elsevier Inc. Iron(II) complexes of polypyridyl ligands (B), viz. Fe(B)(2)]Cl-2 (1 and 2) of N, N, N-donor 2-(2-pyridyl)-1,10-phenanthroline (pyphen in 1) and 3-(pyridin-2-yl)dipyrido3,2-a:2',3'-c]phenazine (pydppz in 2), are prepared and characterized. They are 1:2 electrolytes in aqueous DMF. The diamagnetic complexes exhibit metal to ligand charge transfer band near 570 nm in DMF. The complexes are avid binders to calf thymus DNA giving binding constant (K (b)) values of similar to 10(6) M-1 suggesting significant intercalative DNA binding of the complexes due to presence of planar phenanthroline bases. Complex 2 exhibits significant photocytotoxicity in immortalized human keratinocyte cells HaCaT and breast cancer cell line MCF-7 giving IC50 values of 0.08 and 13 mu M in visible light (400-700 nm). Complex 2 shows only minor dark toxicity in HaCaT cells but is non-toxic in dark in MCF-7 cancer cells. The light-induced cellular damage follows apoptotic pathway on generation of reactive oxygen species as evidenced from the dichlorofluorescein diacetate (DCFDA) assay.

A new ternary iron(III) complex [FeL(dpq)] containing dipyridoquinoxaline (dpq) and 2,2-bis(3,5-di-tert-butyl-2-hydroxybenzyl)aminoacetic acid (H3L) is prepared and structurally characterized by X-ray crystallography. The high-spin complex with a FeN3O3 core shows a quasi-reversible iron(III)/iron(II) redox couple at -0.62 V (vs SCE) in DMF/0.1 M TBAP and a broad visible band at 470 nm in DMF/Tris buffer. Laser photoexcitation of this phenolate (L)-to-iron(III) charge-transfer band at visible wavelengths including red light of >= 630 nm leads to cleavage of supercoiled pUC19 DNA to its nicked circular form via a photoredox pathway forming hydroxyl radicals.

Diphenyl sulphoxide(DPSO) and dimethyl sulphoxide(DMSO) complexes of iron(II) having the composition [Fe(DPSO)6](ClO4)2, Fe(DPSO)2Cl2, Fe(DPSO)3Br2, Fe(DPSO)4I2, [Fe (DMSO)3Cl2]. DMSO and [Fe(DMSO)3Br2]. DMSO and DPSO complexes of iron(III), Fe(DPSO)2 Cl3 have been prepared and their physico-chemical properties studied. Their magnetic moments at room temperature show them to be spin-free complexes. The i.r. spectra reveal that oxygen is the donor atom in all the complexes. The electronic spectra of iron(II) complexes indicate octahedral coordination for the metal ion. A salt like structure [Fe(DPSO)4Cl2][FeCl4], is suggested for the iron (III) complex, where the cationic species has distorted octahedral structure while the anionic species has tetrahedral structure.

A new method for the titrimetric determination of perchlorate has been developed, based on its reduction to chloride by iron(II) in a strong sulphuric acid medium at high temperature. The effect of variables, such as the sulphuric acid concentration, the temperature and the period of heating, on the extent of reduction has been studied and the optimal conditions for analytical determination of perehlorate derived.

An organically templated iron(II) sulfate of the composition [H3N(CH2)2NH2(CH2)2(NH3]4[FeII 9F18(SO4)6]â9H2O with a distorted Kagome structure has been synthesized under solvothermal conditions in the presence of diethylenetriamine. The distortion of the hexagonal bronze structure comes from the presence of two different types of connectivity between the FeF4O2 octahedra and the sulfate tetrahedra. This compound exhibits magnetic properties different from those of an Fe(II) compound with a perfect Kagome structure and is a canted antiferromagnet at low temperatures.

Ternary iron(III) complexes (FeL(B)] (1-3) of a trianionic tetradentate phenolate-based ligand (L) and henanthroline base (B), namely, 1,10-phenanthroline (phen, 1), dipyridoquinoxaline (dpq, 2), and dipyridophenazine (dppz, 3), have been prepared and structurally characterized and their DNA binding, cleavage, and photocytotoxic properties studied. The complexes with a FeN3O3 core show the Fe(III)/Fe(II) redox couple near -0.6 V in DMF, a magnetic moment value of similar to 5.9 mu(B), and a binding propensity to both calf thymus DNA and bovine serum albumin (BSA) protein. They exhibit red-light-induced DNA cleavage activity following a metal-assisted photoredox pathway forming HO center dot radicals but do not show any photocleavage of BSA in UV-A light. Complex 3 displays photocytotoxicity in the human cervical cancer cell line (HeLa) and human keratinocyte cell line (HaCaT) with respective IC50 values of 3.59 mu M and 6.07 mu M in visible light and 251 nM and 751 nM in UV-A light of 365 nm. No significant cytotoxicity is observed in the dark. The photoexposed HeLa cells, treated prior with complex 3, have shown marked changes in nuclear morphology as demonstrated by Hoechst 33258 nuclear stain. Generation of reactive oxygen species has been evidenced from the fluorescence enhancement of dichlorofluorescein upon treatment with 3 followed by photoexposure. Nuclear chromatin cleavage has been observed in acridine orange/ethidium bromide dual staining of treated HeLa cells and from alkaline single-cell gel electrophoresis. Caspase 3/7 activity in HeLa cells has been found to be upregulated by only 4 fold after photoirradiation, signifying the fact that cell death through a caspase 3/7 dependent pathway may not be solely operative.
