In this paper materials like rice husk ash, burnt clay and red mud are examined for their pozzolanic properties. Rice husk ash, obtained from various sources, is analysed by X-ray diffraction. Compressive strength properties of lime-pozzolana mortars with rice husk ash, burnt clay and red mud as pozzolana are studied. Influence of grinding of rice husk ash and intergrinding with lime are also investigated. Combination pozzolana with partial replacement of burnt clay and red mud by rice husk ash are examined for their pozzolanic properties. Long term strength behaviour of lime-pozzolana mortars is investigated to understand the durability of lime-pozzolana cements.

The potential to remove chromium(VI) from aqueous solutions through biosorption using coffee husk was investigated. The effects of pH, contact time, initial concentration and adsorbent dosage on the adsorption of Cr(VI) were studied. The data obeyed Langmuir and Freundlich adsorption isotherms. The Langmuir adsorption capacity was found to be 44.95 mg/g. The Freundlich constants K-f and n were 1.027 mg/g (litre/mg)(n)] and 1.493, respectively. Desorption studies indicated the removal of 60% of the hexavalent chromium. Infrared spectral studies revealed the presence of functional groups, such as hydroxyl and carboxyl groups, on the surface of the biomass, which facilitates biosorption of Cr(VI).

Praseodymium-doped ceria red pigments, Ce1−xPrxO2−δ, x=0–0.5 have been prepared by the thermal decomposition of the redox compound Ce1−xPrx(N2H3COO)3·3H2O as well as by the combustion of aqueous solutions containing cerous nitrate, praseodymium nitrate and oxalyl dihydrazide (ODH)/ammonium acetate. Formation of the pigment has been confirmed by its characteristic red colour and reflectance spectra which shows the reflection edge not, vert, similar690 nm corresponding to charge transfer from the ligand orbitals to the localised 4f1 of Pr4+. The particulate properties of praseodymium-doped ceria pigments obtained from the combustion of redox compounds and redox mixtures are compared.

The suzukacillin fragments, Boc-Ala-Aib-Aib-Gln-Aib-Leu-Aib-Gly-Leu-Aib-Pro-Val-Aib-Aib-OMe (14), Boc-Ala-Aib-Ala-Aib-Aib-Gln-Aib-Leu-Aib-Gly-Leu-Aib-Pro-Val-Aib-Aib-OMe (16G) and the completely apolar 16-residue peptide in which the glutamine residue has been replaced by alanine (16A) have been studied by 270 MHz 1H-HMR, in C2HCl3 and (C2H3)2SO solution. Intramolecularly hydrogen-bonded NH groups have been identified by temperature and solvent dependence of chemical shifts. Peptides 14 and 16A adopt folded 310 helical conformations stabilized by 11 and 13 hydrogen bonds, respectively. In peptide 16G there are 12 intramolecular hydrogen bonds, with the glycine NH being solvent-exposed, in contrast to 14 and 16A.

Effect of lime:silica ratio on the kinetics of the reaction of silica with saturated lime has been investigated. Below C/S=0.65 the reaction does not proceed to completion and even in the presence of a large excess of silica only 90% lime is consumed. A parameter, lime reactivity index, has been defined to quantity the reactive silica present in rice husk ash. The product of the reaction between rice husk ash and saturated lime is a calcium hydrosilicate, C---S---H(I)**. The fibrilar structure and the hollow tubular morphology of the fibres of C---S---H, have been explained by a growth mechanism, where the driving force is osmotic pressure.

In [8], we recently presented two computationally efficient algorithms named B-RED and P-RED for random early detection. In this letter, we present the mathematical proof of convergence of these algorithms under general conditions to local minima.

We study the properties of single red blood cells (RBCs) held in an optical-tweezers trap. We observe a change in the spectrum of Brownian fluctuations between RBCs from normal and malaria-infected samples. The change, caused by infection-induced structural changes in the cell, appears as a statistical increase in the mean (by 25%) and standard deviation (by 200%) of the corner frequency measured over similar to 100 cells. The increase is observed even though the ensemble of cells being measured consists mostly of cells that do not actually host the parasite, but are from an infected pool. This bystander effect appears to vindicate other observations that infected cells can affect the biomechanical properties of uninfected cells. The change is also observed to be independent of the stage of infection and its duration, highlighting its potential for disease detection. CaSiO3:Eu3+ (1-5 mol%) red emitting phosphors have been synthesized by a low-temperature solution combustion method. The phosphors have been well characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and optical spectroscopy. PXRD patterns reveal monoclinic CaSiO3 phase can be obtained at 900 degrees C. The SEM micrographs show the crystallites with irregular shape, mostly angular. Upon 254 nm excitation, the phosphor show characteristic fluorescence D-5(0) -> F-7(J) (J = 0, 1, 2, 3, 4) of the Eu3+ ions. The electronic transition located at 614 nm corresponding to D-5(0) -> F-7(2) of Eu3+ ions, which is stronger than the magnetic dipole transition located at 593 nm corresponding to D-5(0) -> F-7(1) of Eu3+ ions. Different pathways involved in emission process have been studied. Concentration quenching has been observed for Eu3+ concentration >4 mol%. UV-visible absorption shows an intense band at 240 nm in undoped and 270 nm in Eu3+ doped CaSiO3 which is attributed to oxygen to silicon (O-Si) ligand-to-metal charge-transfer (LMCT) band in the SiO32- group. The optical energy band gap is widened with increase of Eu3+ ion dopant. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

beta protein, a key component of Red-pathway of phage lambda is necessary for its growth and general genetic recombination in recombination-deficient mutants of Escherichia coli. To facilitate studies on structure-function relationships, we overexpressed beta protein and purified it to homogeneity. A chemical cross-linking reagent, glutaraldehyde, was used to stabilize the physical association of beta protein in solution. A 67-kDa band, corresponding to homodimer, was identified after separation by SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. Stoichiometric measurements indicated a site-size of 1 monomer of beta protein/5 nucleotide residues. Electrophoretic gel mobility shift assays suggested that beta protein formed stable nucleoprotein complexes with 36-mer, but not with 27- or 17-mer DNA. Interestingly, the interaction of beta protein with DNA and the stability of nucleoprotein complexes was dependent on the presence of MgCl2, and the binding was abolished by 250 mM NaCl. The K-d of beta protein binding to 36-mer DNA was on the order of 1.8 x 10(-6) M. Photochemical cross-linking of native beta protein or its fragments, generated by chymotrypsin, to 36-mer DNA was performed to identify its DNA-binding domain. Characterization of the cross-linked peptide disclosed that amino acids required for DNA-binding specificity resided within a 20-kDa peptide at the N-terminal end. These findings provide a basis for further understanding oi the structure and function of beta protein.

Fe/AlOOH gels calcined and reduced at different temperatures have been investigated by a combined use of Mossbauer spectroscopy, x-ray diffraction, and electron microscopy in order to obtain information on the nature of the iron species formed as well as the various reduction processes. Calcination at or below 1070 K mainly gives reducible Fe3+ while calcination at higher temperatures gives substitutional Fe3+ in the form of Al2-xFexO3. The Fe3+ species in the calcined samples are, by and large, present in the form of small superparamagnetic particles. Crystallization of Al2O3 from the gels is catalyzed by Fe2O3 as well as FeAl2O4. Fe (20 wt. %)/AlOOH gels calcined at or below 870 K give FeAl2O4 when reduced in hydrogen at 1070 K or lower and a ferromagnetic Fe0-Al2O3 composite (with the metallic Fe particles >100 angstrom) when reduced at 1270 K. Samples calcined at 1220 K or higher give the Fe0-Al2O3 composite when reduced in the 870-12,70 K range, but a substantial proportion of Fe3+ remains unreduced in the form of Al2-xFexO3, showing thereby the extraordinary stability of substitutional Fe3+ to reduction even at high temperatures. Besides the ferromagnetic Fe0-Al2O3 composite, high-temperature reduction of Al2-xFexO3 yields a small proportion of superparamagnetic Fe0-Al2O3 wherein small metallic particles (<100 angstrom) are embedded in the ceramic matrix. In order to preferentially obtain the Fe0-Al2O3 composite on reduction, Fe/AlOOH gels should be calcined at low temperatures (less-than-or-equal-to 1100 K); high-temperature calcination results in Al2-xFexO3. Several modes of formation of FeAl2O4 are found possible during reduction of the gels, but a novel one is that involving the reaction, 2Fe3+ + Fe0 --> 3Fe2+.

In situ formations of Al2O3 + ZrO2 + SiCW ternary composite powders have been obtained by carbothermal reduction of a mixture of Sillimanite. Kaolin and Zircon using two different carbon sources. Products formed were mixtures of alumina and zirconia along with silicon carbide in the form of whiskers. The effects of composition of the reactants, the role of fineness of the starting precursors and the nature of the carbon Source on the final product powder obtained are presented. XRD and SEM analyses indicate complete reaction of the precursors to yield Al2O3 + ZrO2 + SiCW as product powders, with the SiC having whisker morphology. It is also seen that zirconia could be stabilised to some extent in the tetragonal form without any stabilising agent by tailoring the starting materials and their composition. Stable and highly reproducible current‐limiting characteristics are observed for polycrystalline ceramics prepared by sintering mixtures of coarse‐grained, donor‐doped BaTiO3 (tetragonal) as the major phase and ultrafine, undoped cubic perovskite such as BaSnO3, BaZrO 3, SrTiO3, or BaTiO3 (cubic). The linear current‐voltage (I‐V) relation changes over to current limiting as the field strength increases, when thermal equilibrium is attained. The grain‐boundary layers with low donor and high Sn, Zr, or Sr have depleted charge carrier density as compared to that in the grain bulk. The voltage drop at the grain‐boundary layers diminishes the temperature gradient between the interior and surface regions.
