The present study focuses on developing functionally graded syntactic foams (FGSFs) based on a layered co-curing technique. The FGSFs were characterized for compressive and flexural properties and compared with plain syntactic foams. The results showed that the specific compressive modulus was 3-67% higher in FGSFs compared to plain syntactic foams. FGSF exhibited 5-34% and 34-87% higher specific modulus and strength, respectively in flexural mode. The microscopic examinations of comparative responses of the filler and matrix to deformation suggest that the failure is dominated by the matrix. The gradient in the composition of syntactic foams helps in effectively distributing the stress throughout the microstructure and results in improved mechanical performance of syntactic foams. From the microscopy studies, it is evident that, the failure mechanism in the FGSF under flexural loading is governed by a crack that initiated on the tensile side of the specimen and propagated through the thickness to cause complete fracture. The microscopic observations further clearly demonstrate the existence of seamless interfaces between the layers and a clear difference in the cenosphere concentration across the interface, affirming the gradation in the prepared samples. The results show that appropriate compositions of FGSFs can be selected to develop materials with improved mechanical performance. POLYM. COMPOS., 36:685-693, 2015. The influence of particulate additions of alumina on the flexural properties of glass-fabric/epoxy composites was studied. The additions improved translaminar flexural strength, while decreasing interlaminar strength. The translaminar bending modulus showed an increasing trend whereas its interlaminar value showed a decrease, up to additions of 3 vol%. The mechanisms of deformation and the fracture features have been discussed with the aid of scanning electron microscopy.

Biodegradable composites comprising of modified starch and modified nanoclay have been prepared. Starch has been modified by esterification and subsequently crosslinked. The thermal, mechanical, and biodegradation characteristics of the composites have been investigated. The compressive properties of the composites with the addition of nanoclay were twice that of crosslinked starch phthalate without addition of nanoclay. Predictive theories were used to analyze the obtained experimental results. SEM studies on fracture morphology indicated quasi-brittle fracture. Flexural properties showed considerable improvement due to nanoclay addition. The water uptake increased up to 6% nanoclay, beyond which the uptake decreased. Biodegradation studies showed an initial time lag prior to the onset of degradation.

Environmental inputs can improve the level of innovation by interconnecting them with traditional inputs regarding the properties of materials and processes as a strategic eco-design procedure. Advanced engineered polymer composites are needed to meet the diverse needs of users for high-performance automotive, construction and commodity products that simultaneously maximize the sustainability of forest resources. In the current work, wood polymer composites (WPC) are studied to promote long-term resource sustainability and to decrease environmental impacts relative to those of existing products. A series of polypropylene wood–fiber composite materials having 20, 30, 40 and 50 wt. % of wood–fibers were prepared using twin-screw extruder and injection molding machine. Tensile and flexural properties of the composites were determined. Polypropylene (PP) as a matrix used in this study is a thermoplastic material, which is recyclable. Suitability of the prepared composites as a sustainable product is discussed.

Enthused by the fascinating properties of graphene, we have prepared graphene analogues of BN by a chemical method with a control on the number of layers. The method involves the reaction of boric acid with urea, wherein the relative proportions of the two have been varied over a wide range. Synthesis with a high proportion of urea yields a product with a majority of 1-4 layers. The surface area of BN increases progressively with the decreasing number of layers, and the high surface area BN exhibits high CO, adsorption, but negligible H, adsorption. Few-layer BN has been solubilized by interaction with Lewis bases. We have used first-principles simulations to determine structure, phonon dispersion, and elastic properties of BN with planar honeycomb lattice-based n-layer forms. We find that the mechanical stability of BN with respect to out-of-plane deformation is quite different from that of graphene, as evident in the dispersion of their flexural modes. BN is softer than graphene and exhibits signatures of long-range ionic interactions in its optical phonons. Finally, structures with different stacking sequences of BN have comparable energies, suggesting relative abundance of slip faults, stacking faults, and structural inhomogeneities in multilayer BN.

The influence of powder processing and sintering temperature on densification, microstructure and mechanical properties of hydroxyapatite (HAp) ceramics was studied. The as-dried, calcined and processed HAp powders were uniaxially compacted and sintered at various temperatures (1000-1400 degreesC) for 3 h. The as-dried and processed powders, attained 97% of theoretical density (TD) at 1100 degreesC) at higher sintering temperatures, the density of the as-dried powder compact was found to decrease. A uniform microstructure with fine grain size (2.3 pm) was observed for material obtained from processed powder, whereas exaggerated grain growth with closed pores were observed in as-dried and unprocessed powder compacts. The Vickers' hardness, fracture toughness and flexural strength of HAp were determined and a maximum value of 6.3 GPa and 0.88 MPam(1/2) and 60.3 MPa, respectively were obtained for processed compact. The processing of HAp has improved its densification, microstructure homogeneity and mechanical properties. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science Ltd and Techna S.r.l. All rights reserved.

In macroscopic and even microscopic structural elements, surface effects can be neglected and classical theories are sufficient. As the structural size decreases towards the nanoscale regime, the surface-to-bulk energy ratio increases and surface effects must be taken into account. In the present work, the terahertz wave dispersion characteristics of a nanotube are studied with consideration of the surface effects as well as the non-local small scale effects. Non-local elasticity theory is used to derive the general governing differential equation based on equilibrium approach to include those scale effects. Scale and surface property dependent wave characteristic equations are obtained via spectral analysis. For the present study the material properties of an anodic alumina nanotube with crystallographic of < 111 > direction are considered. The present analysis shows that the effect of surface properties (surface integrated residual stress and surface integrated modulus) on the flexural wave characteristics of anodic nanotubes are more significant. It has been found that the flexural wavenumbers with surface effects are high as compared to that without surface effects. It has also been shown that, with consideration of surface effects the flexural wavenumbers are under compressive nature. The effect of the small scale and the size of the nanotube on wave dispersion properties are also captured in the present work. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

We report here the development of ultrafine grained ZrB2-SiC composites using TiSi2 as the sintering aid and spark plasma sintering (SPS) as the processing technique. It was observed that the presence of TiSi2 improved the sinterability of the composites, such that near theoretical densification (99.9%) could be achieved for ZrB2-18 wt.% SiC-5 wt.% TiSi2 composites after SPS at 1600 degrees C for 10 min at 50 MPa. Use of innovative multi stage sintering (MSS) route, which involved holding the samples at lower (intermediate) temperatures for some time before holding at the final temperature, while keeping the net holding time to 10 min, allowed attainment of full densification of ZrB2-18 wt.% SiC-2.5 wt.% TiSi2 at a still lower final temperature of 1500 degrees C at 30 MPa. TEM observations, which revealed the presence of anisotropic ZrB2 grains with faceted grain boundaries and TiSi2 at the intergranular regions, suggested the occurrence of liquid phase sintering in the presence of TiSi2. No additional phase was detected in XRD as well as TEM, which confirmed the absence of any sintering reaction. The as developed composites possessed an excellent combination of Vickers hardness and indentation toughness, both of which increased with increase in TiSi2 content, such that the ZrBi2-18 wt.% SiC-5 wt.% TiSi2 (SPS processed at 1600 degrees C) possessed hardness of similar to 20 GPa and indentation toughness of similar to 5 MPa m(1/2). The use of MSS SPS at 1500 degrees C for ZrBi2-18 wt.% SiC-2.5 wt.% TiSi2 composite resulted in improvement in hardness of up to similar to 27 GPa and attainment of high flexural strength of similar to 455 MPa. This paper presents the effect of nonlocal scaling parameter on the coupled i.e., axial, flexural, shear and contraction, wave propagation in single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs). The axial and transverse motion of SWCNT is modeled based on first order shear deformation theory (FSDT) and thickness contraction. The governing equations are derived based on nonlocal constitutive relations and the wave dispersion analysis is also carried out. The studies shows that the nonlocal scale parameter introduces certain band gap region in all wave modes where no wave propagation occurs. This is manifested in the wavenumber plots as the region where the wavenumber tends to infinite or wave speed tends to zero. The frequency at which this phenomenon occurs is called the escape frequency. Explicit expressions are derived for cut-off and escape frequencies of all waves in SWCNT. It is also shown that the cut-off frequencies of shear and contraction mode are independent of the nonlocal scale parameter. The results provided in this article are new and are useful guidance for the study and design of the next generation of nanodevices that make use of the coupled wave propagation properties of single-walled carbon nanotubes.

In this paper, size dependent linear free flexural vibration behavior of functionally graded (FG) nanoplates are investigated using the iso-geometric based finite element method. The field variables are approximated by non-uniform rational B-splines. The nonlocal constitutive relation is based on Eringen's differential form of nonlocal elasticity theory. The material properties are assumed to vary only in the thickness direction and the effective properties for the FG plate are computed using Mori-Tanaka homogenization scheme. The accuracy of the present formulation is demonstrated considering the problems for which solutions are available. A detailed numerical study is carried out to examine the effect of material gradient index, the characteristic internal length, the plate thickness, the plate aspect ratio and the boundary conditions on the global response of the FG nanoplate. From the detailed numerical study it is seen that the fundamental frequency decreases with increasing gradient index and characteristic internal length. (c) 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

It can be found that the flexural wavenumbers with surface effects are high as compared to that without surface effects. The scale effects show that the wavenumbers of the flexural wave become highly non-linear and tend to infinite at certain frequency. After that frequency the wave will not propagate and the corresponding wave velocities tend to zero at that frequency (escape frequency). The effects of surface stresses on the wave propagation properties of nanoplate are also captured in the present work. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Most studies involving cement-stabilized soil blocks (CSSB) concern material properties, such as the characteristics of erosion and strength and how the composition of the block affects these properties. Moreover, research has been conducted on the performance of various mortars, investigating their material properties and the tensile bond strength between CSSB units and mortar. In contrast, very little is currently known about CSSB masonry structural behavior. Because structural design codes of traditional masonry buildings were well developed over the past century, many of the same principles may be applicable to CSSB masonry buildings. This paper details the topic of flexural behavior of CSSB masonry walls and whether the Masonry Standards Joint Committee (MSJC) code can be applied to this material for improved safety of such buildings. Approximate calculations are reported on pyrene within the PPP model Hamiltonian using a novel restricted CI scheme which employs both molecular orbital and valence bond techniques. Also reported are detailed full CI results of the PPP model on 2,7-dihydropyrene obtained using the valence bond method. Spectral studies, charge and spin density calculations in ground and excited states, and ring current calculations in the ground state of the molecules are presented. In pyrene, the calculated excitation energies are in good agreement with experiment. The closed structure pi-conjugated molecule pyrene appears to show smaller distortions from the ground state geometry compared with the open structure pi-conjugated molecule 2,7-dihydropyrene. The ground state equilibrium structure of 2,7-dihydropyrene can be viewed as two hexatriene molecules connected by a vinyl crosslink, as is evident from bond order and ring current calculations. This is consistent with the only Kekule resonant structure possible for this molecule.

The superconducting state of the cuprates in the presence of a magnetic field has been investigated very actively in the past few years through measurements of electrical and thermal transport, ac conductivity, specific heat, and other quantities. The observed behavior is not well understood; it probes the nature of quasiparticies, vortices, and their interactions in a superconductor with nodes in the pair amplitude. We summarize here experimental results and our attempts to understand the phenomena.

The elastic properties of sodium borovanadate glasses have been studied over a wide range of composition using ultrasonic measurements. It is found that variation of different elastic moduli is very similar in any given series of composition. The bulk and shear moduli show a monotonic variation with the covalent bond energy densities calculated from the proposed structural model for these glasses. The bulk moduli also vary as a negative power function of the mean atomic volume. The Debye temperature varies linearly with the glass transition temperature. The implications of the observed behavior have been discussed.
