As the viscosity of a liquid increases rapidly in the supercooled regime, the nature of molecular relaxation can exhibit dynamics rather different from the fast dynamics observed in the normal regime. In this article, we present theoretical studies of solvation dynamics and orientational relaxation in slow liquids. As the local short-range correlations are important in the slow liquids, we have extended our previous theory to take into account the shea-range pair correlations between the polar solute and the dipolar solvent molecules. Application of the generalized theory To the study of solvation dynamics of amide systems gives nice agreement with the experimental results of Maroncelli and co-workers (J. Phys. Chem. 1990, 94, 4929). The theory also provides valuable insight into the orientational relaxation precesses in the viscous liquids.

A nearly constant switching frequency current hysteresis controller for a 2-level inverter fed induction motor drive is proposed in this paper: The salient features of this controller are fast dynamics for the current, inherent protection against overloads and less switching frequency variation. The large variation of switching frequency as in the conventional hysteresis controller is avoided by defining a current-error boundary which is obtained from the current-error trajectory of the standard space vector PWM. The current-error boundary is computed at every sampling interval based on the induction machine parameters and from the estimated fundamental stator voltage. The stator currents are always monitored and when the current-error exceeds the boundary, voltage space vector is switched to reduce the current-error. The proposed boundary computation algorithm is applicable in linear and over-modulation region and it is simple to implement in any standard digital signal processor: Detailed experimental verification is done using a 7.5 kW induction motor and the results are given to show the performance of the drive at various operating conditions and validate the proposed advantages.

A space vector-based hysteresis current controller for any general n-level three phase inverter fed induction motor drive is proposed in this study. It offers fast dynamics, inherent overload protection and low harmonic distortion for the phase voltages and currents. The controller performs online current error boundary calculations and a nearly constant switching frequency is obtained throughout the linear modulation range. The proposed scheme uses only the adjacent voltage vectors of the present sector, similar to space vector pulse-width modulation and exhibits fast dynamic behaviour under different transient conditions. The steps involved in the boundary calculation include the estimation of phase voltages from the current ripple, computation of switching time and voltage error vectors. Experimental results are given to show the performance of the drive at various speeds, effect of sudden change of the load, acceleration, speed reversal and validate the proposed advantages.

Detailed molecular dynamics simulations of Lennard-Jones ellipsoids have been carried out to investigate the emergence of criticality in the single-particle orientational relaxation near the isotropic-nematic (IN) phase transition. The simulations show a sudden appearance of a power-law behavior in the decay of the second-rank orientational relaxation as the IN transition is approached. The simulated value of the power-law exponent is 0.56, which is larger than the mean-field value (0.5) but less than the observed value (0.63) and may be due to the finite size of the simulated system. The decay of the first-rank orientational time correlation function, on the other hand, is nearly exponential but its decay becomes very slow near the isotropic-nematic transition, The zero-frequency rotational friction, calculated from the simulated angular Velocity correlation function, shows a marked increase near the IN transition.

Proton magnetic resonance and spin-lattice relaxation studies have been carried out on (NH4)2CdI4 as a function of temperature (77–400 K) and Larmor frequency (10, 20 and 30 MHz). The T1 data indicate isotropic tumbling of ammonium ions at equivalent sites till 160 K. There is an indication of a phase transition at 265 K, the activation energy for molecular reorientation increases from 2.8 kcal/mole to 4.6 kcal/mole. The relaxation results and the linewidth data support the presence of two inequivalent sites at low temperatures, one having an environment corresponding to near-rigid-lattice limit and the other undergoing fast reorientations. The behaviour of the free induction decay with temperature below 120 K suggests a coherent motion for the faster species.

This paper presents an inverse dynamic formulation by the Newton–Euler approach for the Stewart platform manipulator of the most general architecture and models all the dynamic and gravity effects as well as the viscous friction at the joints. It is shown that a proper elimination procedure results in a remarkably economical and fast algorithm for the solution of actuator forces, which makes the method quite suitable for on-line control purposes. In addition, the parallelism inherent in the manipulator and in the modelling makes the algorithm quite efficient in a parallel computing environment, where it can be made as fast as the corresponding formulation for the 6-dof serial manipulator. The formulation has been implemented in a program and has been used for a few trajectories planned for a test manipulator. Results of simulation presented in the paper reveal the nature of the variation of actuator forces in the Stewart platform and justify the dynamic modelling for control.

This paper presents a simple hybrid computer technique to study the transient behaviour of queueing systems. This method is superior to stand-alone analog or digital solution because the hardware requirement is excessive for analog technique whereas computation time is appreciable in the latter case. By using a hybrid computer one can share the analog hardware thus requiring fewer integrators. The digital processor can store the values, play them back at required time instants and change the coefficients of differential equations. By speeding up the integration on the analog computer it is feasible to solve a large number of these equations very fast. Hybrid simulation is even superior to the analytic technique because in the latter case it is difficult to solve time-varying differential equations.

Comparative studies on protein structures form an integral part of protein crystallography. Here, a fast method of comparing protein structures is presented. Protein structures are represented as a set of secondary structural elements. The method also provides information regarding preferred packing arrangements and evolutionary dynamics of secondary structural elements. This information is not easily obtained from previous methods. In contrast to those methods, the present one can be used only for proteins with some secondary structure. The method is illustrated with globin folds, cytochromes and dehydrogenases as examples.

Nonlinear optical properties and carrier relaxation dynamics in graphene, suspended in three different solvents, are investigated using femtosecond (80 fs pulses) Z-scan and degenerate pump-probe spectroscopy at 790 nm. The results demonstrate saturable absorption property of graphene with a nonlinear absorption coefficient, beta of (similar to 2-9) x 10(-8) cm/W. Two distinct time scales associated with the relaxation of photoexcited carriers, a fast one in the range of 130-330 fs (related to carrier-carrier scattering) followed by it slower one in 3.5-4.9 ps range (associated with carrier-phonon scattering) are observed. The rheological properties of polymer melts and other complex macromolecular fluids are often successfully modeled by phenomenological constitutive equations containing fractional differential operators. We suggest a molecular basis for such fractional equations in terms of the generalized Langevin equation (GLE) that underlies the renormalized Rouse model developed by Schweizer [J. Chem. Phys. 91, 5802 (1989)]. The GLE describes the dynamics of the segments of a tagged chain under the action of random forces originating in the fast fluctuations of the surrounding polymer matrix. By representing these random forces as fractional Gaussian noise, and transforming the GLE into an equivalent diffusion equation for the density of the tagged chain segments, we obtain an analytical expression for the dynamic shear relaxation modulus G(t), which we then show decays as a power law in time. This power-law relaxation is the root of fractional viscoelastic behavior.

Ion transport in a recently demonstrated promising soft matter solid plastic-polymer electrolyte is discussed here in the context of solvent dynamics and ion association. The plastic-polymer composite electrolytes display liquid-like ionic conductivity in the solid state, compliable mechanical strength (similar to 1 MPa), and wide electrochemical voltage stability (>= 5 V). Polyacrylonitrile (PAN) dispersed in lithium perchlorate (LiClO4)-succinonitrile (SN) was chosen as the model system for the study (abbreviated LiClO4-SN:PAN). Systematic observation of various mid-infrared isomer and ion association bands as a function of temperature and polyme concentration shows an effective increase in trans conformer concentration along with free Li+ ion concentration. This strongly supports the view that enhancement in LiClO4-SN:PAN ionic conductivity over the neat plastic electrolyte (LiClO4-SN) is due to both increase in charge mobility and concentration. The ionic conductivity and infrared spectroscopy studies are supported by Brillouin light scattering. For the LiClO4-SN:PAN composites, a peak at 17 GHz was observed in addition to the normal trans-gauche isomerism (as in neat SN) at 12 GHz. The fast process is attributed to increased dynamics of those SN molecules whose energy barrier of transition from gauche to trans has reduced under influences induced by the changes in temperature and polymer concentration. The observations from ionic conductivity, spectroscopy, and light scattering studies were further supplemented by temperature dependent nuclear magnetic resonance H-1 and Li-7 line width measurements.

Main chain and segmental dynamics of polyisoprene (PI) and poly(methyl methacrylate)(PMMA) chains in semi IPNs were systematically studied over a wide range of temperatures (above and below T-g of both polymers) as a function of composition, crosslink density, and molecular weight. The immiscible polymers retained most of its characteristic molecular motion; however, the semi IPN synthesis resulted in dramatic changes in the motional behavior of both polymers due to the molecular level interpenetration between two polymer chains. ESR spin probe method was found to be sensitive to the concentration changes of PMMA in semi IPNs. Low temperature spectra showed the characteristics of rigid limit spectra, and in the range of 293-373 K.complex spectra were obtained with the slow component mostly arisingout of the PMMA rich regions and fast component from the PI phase. We found that the rigid PMMA chains closely interpenetrated into thehighly mobile PI network imparts motional restriction in nearby PI chains, and the highly mobile PI chains induce some degree of flexibility in highly rigid PMMA chains. Molecular level interchain mixing was found to be more efficient at a PMMA concentration of 35 wt.%. Moreover, the strong interphase formed in the above mentionedsemi IPN contributed to the large slow component in the ESR spectra at higher temperature. The shape of the spectra along with the data obtained from the simulations of spectra was correlated to the morphology of the semi IPNs. The correlation time measurement detected the motional region associated with the glass transition of PI and PMMA, and these regions were found to follow the same pattern of shifts in a-relaxation of PI and PMMA observed in DMA analysis. Activation energies associated with the T-g regions were also calculated. T-50G was found to correlate with the T-g of PMMA, and the volume of polymer segments undergoing glass transitional motion was calculated to be 1.7 nm(3).C-13 T-1 rho measurements of PMMA carbons indicate that the molecular level interactions were strong in semi IPN irrespective of the immiscible nature of polymers. The motional characteristics of H atoms attached to carbon atoms in both polymers were analyzed using 2D WISE NMR. Main relaxations of both components shifted inward, and both SEM and TEM analysis showed the development of a nanometer sized morphology in the case of highly crosslinked semi IPN. Molecular dynamics investigation of benzene in one-dimensional channel systems A1PO(4)-5, VPI-5, and carbon nanotube is reported. The results suggest that, in all the three host systems, the plane of benzene is almost perpendicular to the channel axis when the molecule is near the center of the channel and the plane of benzene is parallel to the channel axis when the molecule is near the wall of the channel. The density distribution of benzene as a function of channel length, z and the radial distance, r, from the channel axis is also different in the three host structures. Anisotropy in translational diffusion coefficient, calculated in body-fixed frame of benzene, suggests that benzene prefers to move with its plane parallel to the direction of motion in A1PO(4)-5 and VPI-5 whereas in carbon nanotube the motion occurs predominantly with the plane of the benzene perpendicular to the direction of motion.;Anisotropy associated with the rotational motion is seen to alter significantly in confinement as compared to liquid benzene. In A1PO(4)-5, the rotational anisotropy is reversed as compared to liquid benzene thereby suggesting that anisotropy arising out of molecular geometry can be reduced. Reorientational correlation times for C-6 and C-2 axes Of benzene are reported. Apart from the inertial decay of reorientational correlation function due to free, rotation, two other distinct regimes of decay are observed in narrower channels (AIPO(4)-5 and carbon nanotube): (i) an initial fast decay (0.5-2 ps) and (ii) a slower decay (>2 ps) of reorientational correlation function where C-6 decays slower than C-2 Similar to what is observed in liquid benzene. In the initial fast decay, it is seen that the decay for C-6 is faster than C-2 which is in contrast to what is observed in liquid benzene or for benzene confined in VPI-5.

Recent studies have shown that changes in global mean precipitation are larger for solar forcing than for CO2 forcing of similar magnitude. In this paper, we use an atmospheric general circulation model to show that the differences originate from differing fast responses of the climate system. We estimate the adjusted radiative forcing and fast response using Hansen's ``fixed-SST forcing'' method.Total climate system response is calculated using mixed layer simulations using the same model. Our analysis shows that the fast response is almost 40% of the total response for few key variables like precipitation and evaporation. We further demonstrate that the hydrologic sensitivity, defined as the change in global mean precipitation per unit warming, is the same for the two forcings when the fast responses are excluded from the definition of hydrologic sensitivity, suggesting that the slow response (feedback) of the hydrological cycle is independent of the forcing mechanism. Based on our results, we recommend that the fast and slow response be compared separately in multi-model intercomparisons to discover and understand robust responses in hydrologic cycle. The significance of this study to geoengineering is discussed.

Experiments and computer simulation studies have revealed existence of rich dynamics in the orientational relaxation of molecules in confined systems such as water in reverse micelles, cyclodextrin cavities, and nanotubes. Here we introduce a novel finite length one dimensional Ising model to investigate the propagation and the annihilation of dynamical correlations in finite systems and to understand the intriguing shortening of the orientational relaxation time that has been reported for small sized reverse micelles. In our finite sized model, the two spins at the two end cells are oriented in the opposite directions to mimic the effects of surface that in real system fixes water orientation in the opposite directions. This produces opposite polarizations to propagate inside from the surface and to produce bulklike condition at the center. This model can be solved analytically for short chains. For long chains, we solve the model numerically with Glauber spin flip dynamics (and also with Metropolis single-spin flip Monte Carlo algorithm). We show that model nicely reproduces many of the features observed in experiments. Due to the destructive interference among correlations that propagate from the surface to the core, one of the rotational relaxation time components decays faster than the bulk. In general, the relaxation of spins is nonexponential due to the interplay between various interactions. In the limit of strong coupling between the spins or in the limit of low temperature, the nature of relaxation of the spins undergoes a qualitative change with the emergence of a homogeneous dynamics where decay is predominantly exponential, again in agreement with experiments.
