Temperature and photo-dependent current-voltage characteristics are investigated in thin film devices of a hybrid-composite comprising of organic semiconductor poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene): polystyrenesulfonate (PEDOT: PSS) and cadmium telluride quantum dots (CdTe QDs). A detailed study of the charge injection mechanism in ITO/PEDOT: PSS-CdTe QDs/Al device exhibits a transition from direct tunneling to Fowler-Nordheim tunneling with increasing electric field due to formation of high barrier at the QD interface. In addition, the hybrid-composite exhibits a huge photoluminescence quenching compared to aboriginal CdTe QDs and high increment in photoconductivity (similar to 400%), which is attributed to the charge transfer phenomena. The effective barrier height (Phi(B) approximate to 0.68 eV) is estimated from the transition voltage and the possible origin of its variation with temperature and photo-illumination is discussed. Exciton-phonon coupling and nonradiative relaxation processes have been investigated in near-infrared (NIR) emitting ternary alloyed mercury cadmium telluride (CdHgTe) quantum dots. Organically capped CdHgTe nanocrystals of sizes varying from 2.5-4.2 nm have been synthesized where emission is in the NIR region of 650-855 nm. Temperature-dependent (15-300 K) photoluminescence (PL) and the decay dynamics of PL at 300 K have been studied to understand the photophysical properties. The PL decay kinetics shows the transition from triexponential to biexponential on increasing the size of the quantom dots (QDs), informing the change in the distribution of the emitting states. The energy gap is found to be following the Varshni relation with a temperature coefficient of 2.1-2.8 x 10(-4) eV K-1. The strength of the electron-phonon coupling, which is reflected in the Huang and Rhys factor S, is found in the range of 1.17-1.68 for QDs with a size of 2.5-4.2 nm. The integrated PL intensity is nearly constant until 50 K, and slowly decreases up to 140 K, beyond which it decreases at a faster rate. The mechanism for PL quenching with temperature is attributed to the presence of nonradiative relaxation channels, where the excited carriers are thermally stimulated to the surface defect/trap states. At temperatures of different region (<140 K and 140-300 K), traps of low (13-25 meV) and high (65-140 meV) activation energies seem to be controlling the quenching of the PL emission. The broadening of emission linewidth is found to due to exciton-acoustic phonon scattering and exciton-longitudinal optical (LO) phonon coupling. The exciton-acoustic phonon scattering coefficient is found to be enhanced up to 55 MU eV K-1 due to a stronger confinement effect. These findings give insight into understanding the photophysical properties of CdHgTe QDs and pave the way for their possible applications in the fields of NIR photodetectors and other optoelectronic devices.

Magnetotransport measurements in pulsed fields up to 15 T have been performed on mercury cadmium telluride (Hg1-xCdxTe, x similar to 0.2) bulk as well as liquid phase epitaxially grown samples to obtain the resistivity and conductivity tensors in the temperature range 220-300 K. Mobilities and densities of various carriers participating in conduction have been extracted using both conventional multicarrier fitting (MCF) and mobility spectrum analysis. The fits to experimental data, particularly at the highest magnetic fields, were substantially improved when MCF is applied to minimize errors simultaneously on both resistivity and conductivity tensors. The semiclassical Boltzmann transport equation has been solved without using adjustable parameters by incorporating the following scattering mechanisms to fit the mobility: ionized impurity, polar and nonpolar optical phonons, acoustic deformation potential, and alloy disorder. Compared to previous estimates based on the relaxation time approximation with outscattering only, polar optical scattering and ionized impurity scattering limited mobilities are shown to be larger due to the correct incorporation of the inscattering term taking into account the overlap integrals in the valence band.

We report one-pot hydrothermal synthesis of nearly mono-disperse 3-mercaptopropionic acid capped water-soluble cadmium telluride (CdTe) quantum dots (QDs) using an air stable Te source. The optical and electrical characteristics were also studied here. It was shown that the hydrothermal synthesis could be tuned to synthesize nano structures of uniform size close to nanometers. The emissions of the CdTe QDs thus synthesized were in the range of 500-700 nm by varying the duration of synthesis. The full width at half maximum (FWHM) of the emission peaks is relatively narrow (40-90 nm), which indicates a nearly uniform distribution of QD size. The structural and optical properties of the QDs were characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), photoluminescence (PL) and Ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) spectroscopy. The photoluminescence quenching of CdTe QDs in the presence of L-cysteine and DNA confirms its biocompatibility and its utility for biosensing applications. The room temperature current-voltage characteristics of QD film on ITO coated glass substrate show an electrically induced switching between states with high and low conductivities. The phenomenon is explained on the basis of charge confinement in quantum dots. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

We report the nonlinear optical absorption studies in two differently sized water-soluble cadmium telluride quantum dot (QD) samples, exhibiting first excitonic absorption peaks at 493 nm and 551 nm, respectively. An optical limiting behavior is observed for near-resonant excitation at 532 nm using nanosecond laser pulses, originating from the effective two-photon absorption (TPA) mechanism. The effective TPA coefficient (beta(eff)) is measured to be in the range of 10(-12) m/W. This is one order of magnitude higher than the TPA coefficient (beta) reported for off-resonant excitation. At this excitation wavelength, the smaller QD shows a relatively weaker photoluminescence and stronger nonlinear absorption. (C) 2012 American Institute of Physics. [doi:10.1063/1.3687695]

We demonstrate all inorganic, robust, cost-effective, spin-coated, two-terminal capacitive memory metal-oxide nanoparticle-oxide-semiconductor devices with cadmium telluride nanoparticles sandwiched between aluminum oxide phosphate layers to form the dielectric memory stack. Using a novel high-speed circuit to decouple reading and writing, experimentally measured memory windows, programming voltages, retention times, and endurance are comparable with or better than the two-terminal memory devices realized using other fabrication techniques.

Results of temperature dependence of EPR spectra of Mn2+ and Cu2+ ions doped calcium cadmium acetate hexahydrate (CaCd(CH3COO)4•6H2O) have been reported. The investigation has been carried out in the temperature range between room temperature ( 300 K) and liquid nitrogen temperature. A I-order phase transition at 146 ± 0.5 K has been confirmed. In addition a new II-order phase transition at 128 ± 1 K has been detected for the first time. There is evidence of large amplitude hindered rotations of CH3 groups which become frozen at 128 K. The incorporation of Cu2+ and Mn2+ probes at Ca2+ and Cd2+ sites respectively provide evidence that the phase transitions are caused by the molecular rearrangements of the common coordinating acetate groups between Ca2+ and Cd2+ sites. In contradiction to the previous reports of a change of symmetry from tetragonal to orthorhombic below 140 K, the symmetry of the host is concluded to remain tetragonal in all the three observed phases between room temperature and liquid nitrogen temperature.

The grain size dependencies of the yield and fracture stresses in hot rolled Mg-12.7 at % Cd alloy have been measured in the temperature range 77 to 420 K and are found to be in accordance with HalI-Petch type of equations. In hot rolled Mg-12.7 Cd alloy, the HalI-Petch intercept a w is higher than that in hot rolled magnesium, while the slope ky is comparable. The fracture is intercrystalline at 77 K, mixed mode at 300 K and ductile at 420 K. The above flow and fracture behaviours are interpreted in terms of the complimentary effects of texture hardening and solid solution strengthening.

The variation in the tensile properties at 77 K and 300 K in warm-rolled (300 K) Cd-1% Ag alloy with deformation has been studied in longitudinal as well as transverse specimens. The low-temperature yield strength increases with warm rolling without much loss in ductility. The strength at 300 K, however, decreases with heavy warm deformation. From microstructural studies and X-ray investigations, it was observed that changes in grain size and texture occur during warm rolling. Both these changes are found to be important in deciding the tensile properties. The longitudinal and transverse strengths at 77 K vary linearly with l-frac12, where l is the average grain diameter, and thus they obey the Hall-Petch relation. The Hall-Petch slope, k, is lower in specimens with favourable lcub1013rcub texture while the intercept σo is higher when the lcub0002rcub texture is less favourable.

Surface oxidation of Cd, In, Sn and Sb has been investigated by employing valence bands, metal 4d levels and plasmon bands in X-ray photoelectron spectra. O(KLL), metal M4N45N45, and plasmon transitions in electron-induced Auger spectra as well as Auger transitions due to the metal (metal oxide) and plasmons in X-ray-induced Auger spectra. The surface oxides are In2O4, CdO and a mixture of SnO and SnO2 in the case of In. Cd and Sn respectively. The facility of surface oxidation is found to vary as In>Cd>Sn>Sb. Inter-atomic Auger transitions involving oxygen valence bands have been identified on oxidized surfaces of Cd and In.
