The nanoindentation hardness of individual shear bands in a Zr-based metallic glass was investigated in order to obtain a better understanding of how shear band plasticity is influenced by non-crystalline defects. The results clearly showed that the shear band hardness in both as-cast and structurally relaxed samples is much lower than the respective hardness of undeformed region. Interestingly, inter-band matrix also exhibited lower hardness than undeformed region. The results are discussed in terms of the influence of structural state and the prevailing mechanism of plastic deformation.

The mechanical properties of amorphous alloys have proven both scientifically unique and of potential practical interest, although the underlying deformation physics of these materials remain less firmly established as compared with crystalline alloys. In this article, we review recent advances in understanding the mechanical behavior of metallic glasses, with particular emphasis on the deformation and fracture mechanisms. Atomistic as well as continuum modeling and experimental work on elasticity, plastic flow and localization, fracture and fatigue are all discussed, and theoretical developments are connected, where possible, with macroscopic experimental responses. The role of glass structure on mechanical properties, and conversely, the effect of deformation upon glass structure, are also described. The mechanical properties of metallic glass-derivative materials – including in situ and ex situ composites, foams and nanocrystal-reinforced glasses – are reviewed as well. Finally, we identify a number of important unresolved issues for the field.

The purpose of this study is to experimentally investigate the interaction of inelastic deformation and microstructural changes of two Zr-based bulk metallic glasses (BMGs): Zr41.25Ti13.75Cu12.5Ni10Be22.5 (commercially designated as Vitreloy 1 or Vit1) and Zr46.75Ti8.25Cu7.5Ni10Be27.5 (Vitreloy 4, Vit4). High-temperature uniaxial compression tests were performed on the two Zr alloys at various strain rates, followed by structural characterization using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Two distinct modes of mechanically induced atomic disordering in the two alloys were observed, with Vit1 featuring clear phase separation and crystallization after deformation as observed with TEM, while Vit4 showing only structural relaxation with no crystallization. The influence of the structural changes on the mechanical behaviors of the two materials was further investigated by jump-in-strain-rate tests, and flow softening was observed in Vit4. A free volume theory was applied to explain the deformation behaviors, and the activation volumes were calculated for both alloys.

The role of imposed strain on the room temperature time-dependent deformation behavior of bulk metallic glasses (BMGs) was systematically investigated through spherical nanoindentation creep experiments. The results show that creep occurred even at very low strains within elastic regimes and, interestingly, a precipitous increase in creep rate was found in plastic regimes, with BMG that had a higher free volume exhibiting greater creep rates. The results are discussed in terms of prevailing mechanisms of elastic/plastic deformation of amorphous alloys. (c) 2010 Acta Materialia Inc. Published by Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The influence of absorbed hydrogen on the mechanical behavior of a series of Ni-Nb-Zr amorphous metallic ribbons was investigated through nanoindentation experiments. It was revealed that the influence is significantly dependent on Zr content, that is, hydrogen induced softening in relatively low-Zr alloys, whereas hydrogen induced hardening in high-Zr alloys. The results are discussed in terms of the different roles of mobile and immobile hydrogen in the plastic deformation. (C) 2014 Acta Materialia Inc. Published by Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

AI83Y10Ni7, AI80Y10Ni10 and AI80Y10Cu10 alloys were studied by the rapid solidification processing route. The glass-forming ability was found to decrease in the order of alloys mentioned above. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) of these amorphous alloys showed that the amorphous phase in AI-Y-Ni alloys has a higher thermal stability when compared to that in AI-Y-Cu alloys. A four-stage crystallization sequence could be identified for the AI-Y-Ni amorphous alloys. Even though the AI80Y10Cu10 alloy showed four exothermic peaks in the DSC study, a definite crystallization sequence could not be arrived at due to the coexistence of many crystalline phases along with the amorphous phase in the melt-spun condition.

A reanalysis of the correction to the Boltzmann conductivity due to maximally crossed graphs for degenerate bands explains why the conductivity scale in many-valley semiconductors is an order of magnitude higher than Mott's "minimum metallic conductivity." With the use of a reasonable assumption for the Boltzmann mean free path, the lowest-order perturbation theory is seen to give a remarkably good, semiquantitative, description of the conductivity variation in both uncompensated doped semiconductors and amorphous alloys.

Plasticity in amorphous alloys is associated with strain softening, induced by the creation of additional free volume during deformation. In this paper, the role of free volume, which was a priori in the material, on work softening was investigated. For this, an as-cast Zr-based bulk metallic glass (BMG) was systematically annealed below its glass transition temperature, so as to reduce the free volume content. The bonded-interface indentation technique is used to generate extensively deformed and well defined plastic zones. Nanoindentation was utilized to estimate the hardness of the deformed as well as undeformed regions. The results show that the structural relaxation annealing enhances the hardness and that both the subsurface shear band number density and the plastic zone size decrease with annealing time. The serrations in the nanoindentation load-displacement curves become smoother with structural relaxation. Regardless of the annealing condition, the nanohardness of the deformed regions is similar to 12-15% lower, implying that the prior free volume only changes the yield stress (or hardness) but not the relative flow stress (or the extent of strain softening). Statistical distributions of the nanohardness obtained from deformed and undeformed regions have no overlap, suggesting that shear band number density has no influence on the plastic characteristics of the deformed region.

In this paper, an overview of some recent numerical simulations of stationary crack tip fields in elastic-plastic solids is presented. First, asymptotic analyses carried out within the framework of 2D plane strain or plane stress conditions in both pressure insensitive and pressure sensitive plastic solids are reviewed. This is followed by discussion of salient results obtained from recent computational studies. These pertain to 3D characteristics of elastic-plastic near-front fields under mixed mode loading, mechanics of fracture and simulation of near-tip shear banding process of amorphous alloys and influence of crack tip constraint on the structure of near-tip fields in ductile single crystals. These results serve to illustrate several important features associated with stress and strain distributions near the crack tip and provide the foundation for understanding the operative failure mechanisms. The paper concludes by highlighting some of the future prospects for this field of study.

We demonstrate that irradiation may enhance the plasticity in metallic glasses by increasing the free-volume content via micropillar compression experiments on an ion-irradiated bulk metallic glass (BMG). Results show that irradiation decreases the flow stress and enhances the shear band formation by lowering the magnitude of stress serrations in plastic flow regime. These results highlight that amorphous alloys can mitigate the deleterious affects of severe ion irradiation as compared to their crystalline counterparts. (C) 2009 Acta Materialia Inc. Room temperature, uniaxial compression creep experiments were performed on micro-/nano-sized pillars (having diameters in the range of 250-2000 nm) of a Zr-based bulk metallic glass (BMG) to investigate the influence of sample size on the time-dependent plastic deformation behavior in amorphous alloys. Experimental results reveal that plastic deformation indeed occurs at ambient temperature and at stresses that are well below the nominal quasi-static yield stress. At a given stress, higher total strains accrue in the smaller specimens. In all cases, plastic deformation was found to be devoid of shear bands, i.e., it occurs in homogeneous manner. The stress exponent obtained from the slope of the linear relation between strain rate and applied stress also shows a strong size effect, which is rationalized in terms of the amount of free volume created during deformation and the surface-to-volume ratio of the pillar. Significant progress in understanding the mechanical behavior of metallic glasses (MGs) was made over the past decade, particularly on mechanisms of plastic deformation. However, recent research thrust has been on exploring the mechanics and physics of fracture. MGs can be very brittle with K-Ic values similar to silicate glasses and ceramics or very tough with K-Ic akin to high toughness crystalline metals. Even the tough MGs can become brittle with structural relaxation following annealing at temperatures close to glass transition temperature (T-g). Detailed experimental studies coupled with complementary numerical simulations of the recent past have provided insights on the micromechanisms of failure as well as nature of crack tip fields, and established the governing fracture criteria for ductile and brittle glasses. In this paper, the above advances are reviewed and outstanding issues in the context of fracture of amorphous alloys that need to be resolved are identified.

The electrical resistivity of bulk semiconducting amorphous TlxSe100-x alloys with 0 ≤ x ≤ 25 has been investigated up to a pressure of 14 GPa and down to liquidnitrogen temperature by use of a Bridgman anvil device. All the glasses undergo a discontinuous pressure-induced semiconducting-to-metal transition. X-ray diffraction studies on the pressure-recovered samples show that the high-pressure phase is the crystalline phase. The pressure-induced crystalline products are identified to be a mixture of Se having a hexagonal structure with a = 4·37 Aring and c = 4·95 Aring and TlSe having a tetragonal structure with a = 8·0 Aring and c = 7·0 Aring

Precise measurements of the ultrasonic velocities and thermal expansivities of amorphous Se80Te20 and Se90Te10 alloys are reported near the glass transition. The samples are produced by liquid quenching. The longitudinal and transverse velocities are measured at 10 MHz frequency using the McSkimin pulse superposition technique. The thermal expansivities, agr, are measured using a three-terminal capacitance bridge. Theagr-values show a sharp maximum near the glass transition temperature,T g. The ultrasonic velocities also show a large temperature derivative, dV/dT nearT g. The data are discussed in terms of existing theories of the glass transition. The continuous change inagr shows that the glass transition is not a first-order transition, as suggested by some theories. The samples are found to be deformed by small loads nearT g. The ultrasonic velocities and dV/dT have contributions arising from this deformation.
