Any pair of non-adjacent vertices forms a non-edge in a graph. Contraction of a non-edge merges two non-adjacent vertices into a single vertex such that the edges incident on the non-adjacent vertices are now incident on the merged vertex. In this paper, we consider simple connected graphs, hence parallel edges are removed after contraction. The minimum number of nodes whose removal disconnects the graph is the connectivity of the graph. We say a graph is k-connected, if its connectivity is k. A non-edge in a k-connected graph is contractible if its contraction does not result in a graph of lower connectivity. Otherwise the non-edge is non-contractible. We focus our study on non-contractible non-edges in 2-connected graphs. We show that cycles are the only 2-connected graphs in which every non-edge is non-contractible. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. An analytical and experimental study of the hydraulic jump in stilling basins with abrupt drop and sudden enlargement, called the spatial B-jump here, is carried out for finding the sequent depth ratio and resulting energy dissipation. The spatial B-jump studied has its toe downstream of the expansion section, and the stream lines at the toe are characterized by downward curvature. An expression is obtained for the sequent depth ratio based on the momentum equation with suitable assumptions for the extra pressure force term because of the abrupt drop in the bed and sudden enlargement in the basin width. Predictions compare favorably with experiments. It is shown that the spatial B-jump needs less tailwater depth, thereby enhancing the stability of the jump when compared either with spatial jump, which forms in sudden expanding channels, or with B-jump, which forms in a channel with an abrupt drop in bed. It is also shown that there is a significant increase in relative energy loss for the spatial B-jump compared to either the spatial jump or B-jump alone.

A method has been developed for the removal of chromium using ferrous sulphide generated in situ. The effects of experimental parameters such as pH, reagent dosages, interference from cations and chelating agents have been investigated. Under optimum conditions, removal efficiencies of 99 and 97% for synthetic and industrial samples have been obtained. The method offers all the advantages of sulphide precipitation process and can be adopted easily for industrial effluents.
Natural frequencies of rectangular orthotropic plates with a pair of parallel edges simply supported

Solutions of the exact characteristic equations for the title problem derived earlier by an extension of Bolotin's asymptotic method are considered. These solutions, which correspond to flexural modes with frequency factor, R, greater than unity, are expressed in convenient forms for all combinations of clamped, simply supported and free conditions at the remaining pair of parallel edges. As in the case of uniform beams, the eigenvalues in the CC case are found to be equal to those of elastic modes in the FF case provided that the Kirchoff's shear condition at a free edge is replaced by the condition. The flexural modes with frequency factor less than unity are also investigated in detail by introducing a suitable modification in the procedure. When Poisson's ratios are not zero, it is shown that the frequency factor corresponding to the first symmetric mode in the free-free case is less than unity for all values of side ratio and rigidity ratios. In the case of one edge clamped and the other free it is found that modes with frequency factor less than unity exist for certain dimensions of the plate—a fact hitherto unrecognized in the literature.

The classical Rayleigh-Ritz method in conjunction with suitable co-ordinate transformations is found to be effective for accurate estimation of natural frequencies of circumferentially truncated circular sector plates with simply supported straight edges. Numerical results are obtained for all the nine combinations of clamped, simply supported and free boundary conditions at the circular edges and presented in the form of graphs. The analysis confirms an earlier observation that the plate behaves like a long rectangular strip as the width of the plate in the radial direction becomes small.

In the case of reinforced concrete slabs fixed at the boundaries, considerable enhancement in the load carrying capacity takes place due to compressive membrane action. In this paper a method is presented to analyse the effects of membrane action in fixed orthotropic circular slabs, carrying uniformly distributed loads. Depending on the radial moment capacity being greater or less than the circumferential moment capacity, two cases of orthotropy have been considered. Numerical results are worked out for certain assumed physical parameters and for different coefficients of orthotropy. Variations of load and bending moments with the central deflection are presented.

Frequencies of free vibration of rectangular plates of arbitrary thickness, with different support conditions, are calculated by using the Method of Initial Functions (MIF), proposed by Vlasov. Sixth and fourth order MIF theories are used for the solution. Numerical results are presented for three square plates for three thickness ratios. The support conditions considered are (i) three sides simply supported and one side clamped, (ii) two opposite sides simply supported and the other two sides clamped and (iii) all sides clamped. It is found that the results produced by the MIF method are in fair agreement with those obtained by using other methods. The classical theory gives overestimates of the frequencies and the departures from the MIF results increase for higher modes and larger thickness ratios.

Contraction of an edge e merges its end points into a new single vertex, and each neighbor of one of the end points of e is a neighbor of the new vertex. An edge in a k-connected graph is contractible if its contraction does not result in a graph with lesser connectivity; otherwise the edge is called non-contractible. In this paper, we present results on the structure of contractible edges in k-trees and k-connected partial k-trees. Firstly, we show that an edge e in a k-tree is contractible if and only if e belongs to exactly one (k + 1) clique. We use this characterization to show that the graph formed by contractible edges is a 2-connected graph. We also show that there are at least |V(G)| + k - 2 contractible edges in a k-tree. Secondly, we show that if an edge e in a partial k-tree is contractible then e is contractible in any k-tree which contains the partial k-tree as an edge subgraph. We also construct a class of contraction critical 2k-connected partial 2k-trees.

The removal of noise and outliers from health signals is an important problem in jet engine health monitoring. Typically, health signals are time series of damage indicators, which can be sensor measurements or features derived from such measurements. Sharp or sudden changes in health signals can represent abrupt faults and long term deterioration in the system is typical of gradual faults. Simple linear filters tend to smooth out the sharp trend shifts in jet engine signals and are also not good for outlier removal. We propose new optimally designed nonlinear weighted recursive median filters for noise removal from typical health signals of jet engines. Signals for abrupt and gradual faults and with transient data are considered. Numerical results are obtained for a jet engine and show that preprocessing of health signals using the proposed filter significantly removes Gaussian noise and outliers and could therefore greatly improve the accuracy of diagnostic systems. Alum-impregnated activated alumina (AIAA) was investigated in the present work as an adsorbent for the removal of As(V) from water by batch mode. Adsorption study at different pH values shows that the efficiency of AIAA is much higher than as such activated alumina and is suitable for treatment of drinking water. The adsorption isotherm experiments indicated that the uptake of As(V) increased with increasing As(V) concentration from 1 to 25 mg/l and followed Langmuir-type adsorption isotherm. Speciation diagram shows that in the pH range of 2.8–11.5, arsenate predominantly exists as H2AsO4− and HAsO42− species and hence it is presumed that these are the major species being adsorbed on the surface of AIAA. Intraparticle diffusion and kinetic studies revealed that adsorption of As(V) was due to physical adsorption as well as through intraparticle diffusion. Effect of interfering ions revealed that As(V) sorption is strongly influenced by the presence of phosphate ion. The presence of arsenic on AIAA is depicted from zeta potential measurement, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy-dispersive analysis of X-ray (EDAX) mapping study. Alum-impregnated activated alumina successfully removed As(V) to below 40 ppb (within the permissible limit set by WHO) from water, when the initial concentration of As(V) is 10 mg/l.

In document images, we often find printed lines over-lapping with hand written elements especially in case of signatures. Typical examples of such images are bank cheques and payment slips. Although the detection and removal of the horizontal lines has been addressed, the restoration of the handwritten area after removal of lines, persists to be a problem of interest. lit this paper, we propose a method for line removal and restoration of the erased areas of the handwritten elements. Subjective evaluation of the results have been conducted to analyze the effectiveness of the proposed method. The results are promising with an accuracy of 86.33%. The entire Process takes less than half a second for completion on a 2.4 GHz 512 MB RAM Pentium IV PC for a document image.

Raffinose oligosaccharides (RO) are the major factors responsible for flatulence following ingestion of soybean-derived products. Removal of RO from seeds or soymilk would then have a positive impact on the acceptance of soy-based foods. In this study, alpha-galactosidase from Aspergillus oryzae was entrapped in gelatin using formaldehyde as the hardener. The immobilization yield was 64.3% under the optimum conditions of immobilization. The immobilized alpha-galactosidase showed a shift in optimum pH from 4.8 to 5.4 in acetate buffer. The optimum temperature also shifted from 50 degrees C to 57 degrees C compared with soluble enzyme. Immobilized alpha-galactosidase was used in batch, repeated batch and continuous mode to degrade RO present in soymilk. In the repeated batch, 45% reduction of RO was obtained in the fourth cycle. The performance of immobilized alpha-galactosidase was tested in a fluidized bed reactor at different flow rates and 86% reduction of RO in soymilk was obtained at 25 ml h(-1) flow rate. The study revealed that immobilized alpha-galactosidase in continuous mode is efficient in reduction of RO present in soymilk.

The commercial acrylic fibre "Cashmilon" was partially hydrolyzed to convert a fraction of its nitrile (-CN) groups to carboxylic acid (-COOH) groups and then coated with polyethylenimine (PEI) resin and cross-linked with glutaraldehyde to produce a novel gel-coated fibrous sorbent with multiple functionalities of cationic, anionic and chelating types, and significantly faster sorption kinetics than bead-form sorbents. The sorption properties of the fibrous sorbent were measured using Zn(II) in aqueous solution as the sorbate to determine the effects of pH and the presence of common ions in the solution on the sorption capacity. The rate of sorption on the gel-coated fibre was measured in comparison with that on Amberlite IRA-68 weak-base resin beads, to demonstrate the marked difference between fibre and bead-form sorbents in their kinetic behaviour.
